Jakobs Castle performs in the Helpful Honda Sound Space.
Transcript
00:00:00All right, all right. What's up, everybody? Welcome, welcome. Thank you for being here.
00:00:08This is a KROQ locals only presented evening here at the Helpful Honda Soundspace at KROQ.
00:00:14So thank you for being a part of this. Once a year, we're going to invite a local band
00:00:19to perform in this space. And when considering who that would be this year, it was a pretty
00:00:25obvious choice. Please welcome the main attraction of your evening, Jacob Knoll, Jacob's Castle.
00:00:34What up, everybody? Make some noise out there. Where should we sit? I was thinking I could
00:00:44sit here. The focus usually is on people's rights. Because I really like that seat, but
00:00:50that's cool. You want to switch? No, no, I'm stuck, dude. This is your world, man. I'm
00:00:54just living in it, Jacob. Where should I put my hands? So I want to I want to kind of start
00:01:02with the record, Enter the Castle, which is your album. Anybody heard the record yet out
00:01:07there? Come on. Let's go. It was released in April, which was around the Coachella performances,
00:01:15not only with Sublime, but also a pre-party you had with Jacob's Castle. Yes, sir. What
00:01:23was it like releasing new music around such a high profile performance? And also after
00:01:32Weekend One, the performance was over, but you were kind of like yelling at the crowd
00:01:37a little bit, trying to communicate something. But the the mics were cut off. Thought you
00:01:41can kind of get into that a little bit, what you were trying to say and just how that all
00:01:45went. Good eye, man. Yeah, it was a lot of fun out there. Coachella was a really good
00:01:48time, y'all. I'm super excited to be playing with my dad's band, Sublime, and continuing
00:01:53to do Jacob's Castle together. It's one big family, man. One big family out there, let
00:01:57me tell you. And to keep that vibe like every single Sublime show I play, you know, obviously
00:02:03a lot bigger and stuff. I always try to go out into the audience and just have fun and
00:02:09romp around a little bit. And my boy Mark over there saved me from drowning on three
00:02:13occasions. Round of applause for Mark, everybody. I like to usually like jump in the water for
00:02:18if we're playing by a beach or in a pool. So I think I was just trying to incite chaos,
00:02:22if I remember correctly. That's usually my goal. You did a great job of doing so. So
00:02:27thank you for that. Weekend one and weekend two, how did they compare at Coachella? Oh,
00:02:32they were both amazing, you know, different in their own ways. But I think the more we
00:02:36play shows, the more we just get locked into that vibe and we get more comfortable with
00:02:40one another and totally a surreal experience, man. It's so amazing how many people's lives
00:02:45have been touched by that, that music and that sound and this amazing, amazing scene
00:02:49we have here in Southern California, the best place to be in the fucking world. Sorry, I
00:02:55swore. Has it has it hit you talking about how important this has been? You know, you
00:03:00singing these Sublime songs with Bud and Eric, what that means to Sublime fans? Is that really
00:03:07kind of kind of sunk in for you? A and B, what does it mean for you? Oh, it's so beautiful
00:03:13because, you know, every show I play, whether it's a Sublime show or Jacob's Castle show,
00:03:18people come up to me with amazing stories and ways that that music has affected their
00:03:22life and continues to do it. So I think playing with my uncles like that has just sort of
00:03:27strengthened our relationship. And it's challenged me as a musician. And it's shown me that music
00:03:32goes beyond just the sounds that we make and the fun events that we do. It's the memories
00:03:36that that we create here. You know, all these things that we do, we do it because those
00:03:40are the memories that, you know, no one can take away from us. Yeah. You know what I mean?
00:03:46I want to dive into Jacob's Castle, obviously. That's why we're all here after all. At K-Rock.
00:03:54The bio of Jacob's Castle, it says if Jacob's Castle were a place, it would exist somewhere
00:04:00in the present. That's also rooted in history. Now, could it be implied that has something
00:04:07to do with collaboration, writing with artists from the present, the future, as kind of the
00:04:14Jacob's Castle name and bio would suggest?
00:04:18Yeah, totally. I think to be my most authentic self, I have to, you know, draw from where
00:04:24I come from, the sounds of the past. You know, that's sort of like referencing the entire
00:04:28skunk record scene and Long Beach in general and Southern California. But with also an
00:04:33eye towards the future and innovation and all the amazing musicians in many different
00:04:37scenes and many different genres that have also been inspired by that. So Jacob's Castle
00:04:42is my attempt to create like this big collective and mix it up all together. And what we've
00:04:46been doing a lot with our band is, you know, putting on all these awesome local shows with
00:04:50some of our friends like my boy Salter, who's here tonight. Make some noise for him. Yeah,
00:04:55man. Our boy, the Jesse James Pariah and the Shus Boys and man, so many other amazing bands.
00:05:02Strange Case, my guitar player plays with that band. There's just so much awesome music
00:05:06that I'm excited about nowadays. And these are people that were not only just inspired
00:05:09by my dad's bands, but a lot of the contemporaries from that era. So I find myself in a unique
00:05:14position getting to play for a big band like that. And I want to use that platform to just
00:05:18boost up all of these amazing sort of like locally unknown, somehow unseen musicians
00:05:23that are doing really cool, amazing things. So come on out to some more local shows, man.
00:05:28Locals only, no guest list. Come on. Some Burt Records. Let's do it.
00:05:31That's why we're here. I love it. There's a strong like narrative subject matter with
00:05:38regards to storytelling when it comes to the music you make, your lyrics. We're talking
00:05:44about collaboration as well. There's one song on Enter the Castle. There's many songs. We've
00:05:49been playing Catch Me on K-Rock Locals Only for what feels like a year now. Time Traveler,
00:05:54another fantastic record, which has gotten a lot of love on K-Rock. There's a song, track
00:05:59one on Enter the Castle. It's called Supervillain.
00:06:02Oh, yeah. That's a good one, man.
00:06:04It's a fantastic record, a great narrative to it. Wondering if you can talk about that
00:06:10song, and also the collaboration that was a part of the creation of Supervillain.
00:06:16Yeah, that was another. It was Time Traveler, Supervillain, and I think My Machine. There
00:06:21were songs that I went in with my good friend, Mr. Tim Armstrong. Shout out to Epitaph Records.
00:06:26We got them out here tonight, all my people at Epitaph. Thanks for the help. Tim was the
00:06:30kind of guy when you meet him, it's like meeting a long lost uncle or something. He just hugs
00:06:34you and embraces you, and it's the most fun, natural writing experience. He would have
00:06:38so many of these cool, old, soulful hooks that I wanted to take and flip and make modern
00:06:44and make them weird sounding and stuff. I think Supervillain came out to be like that,
00:06:48and it reflects that narrative.
00:06:51There is a lot of other hidden meanings and underlying threads and stuff. I kind of don't
00:06:56want to give it all away too readily, but at the same time, I think there's a lot to
00:07:00enjoy on the surface and beneath the surface, too.
00:07:03Keep it real, bro.
00:07:05Yes. Keep it real, indeed. There's so much time and effort and care into the art and
00:07:09the songs that you make, clearly. At the same time, you're balancing this other full-time
00:07:14job being a part of a legendary band like Sublime for K-Rock as well. You essentially
00:07:22have two full-time and two bands. How are you managing that?
00:07:29I try not to sleep too much, barely eat, never go outside. No, I'm kidding. It's a dream
00:07:36come true, man. It's a beautiful thing. I think getting to do this is one of the biggest
00:07:40blessings ever, getting to portray the music of my family and to continue with my music
00:07:44into the present. I think to touch on stories, that's really what goes beyond just the music
00:07:50itself. I think in all forms of art and everything in life, people connect with stories. We want
00:07:56to see our stories told up there in music. Come be a part of our story tonight, y'all.
00:08:00Appreciate y'all being here. You guys are the best. Look at this crowd out here tonight.
00:08:05I love you guys. Thank you. Thank y'all for being here, for sure.
00:08:10Being at K-Rock, I've had the pleasure to be part of the staff for quite a while now.
00:08:14We've been able to connect with you at some of your shows over the years. Something that
00:08:19... Maybe it was Beach Life last year. We were talking about how ... It might have even
00:08:23been further than that, but the idea of fronting Sublime. It didn't feel like the right time.
00:08:32There came a point where it did feel right, and you did decide to join Bud and Eric. How
00:08:38did that come to be? What was that moment for you?
00:08:41There's all sorts of weird synchronicities that go into things. I think sometimes we
00:08:45just choose to interpret those signs as a signifier to move forward with the decision.
00:08:50I'm really happy it did turn out like that. Yeah, me and K-Rock go way the hell ... Back
00:08:56to when I was a little kid, just listening to the radio. Then Megan, actually, Megan
00:08:59Holiday. I met her when I was still with my old band, Law, years and years and years ago.
00:09:05We'll have to carbon date it to figure out when it was. It's just been so crazy. It just
00:09:09feels like a family thing on every single level.
00:09:14Moving into it, I've talked about this experience at the Phoenix Theater, where Sublime played
00:09:19their last show. I've talked about that at length before. I think after having that,
00:09:25me being 28, the same age that my father was when he passed away. A big thing that happened
00:09:29was there was this HR benefit, the lead singer of Bad Brains, that Bud and Eric wanted to
00:09:34do, and they wanted to do it with me. We had fun jamming together. We say blame HR
00:09:40for bringing Sublime back together. And Paul Tillett.
00:09:44Terragram Ballroom, December 2023. That was an insanely special night, for sure. A few
00:09:50months ago, you came to K-Rock, and you world premiered the song, Feel Like That, by Sublime
00:09:56and Stick Figure, featuring Bradley Noel, which has turned into one of the biggest K-Rock
00:10:02songs of 2024.
00:10:03Yes, we love to hear it.
00:10:08That record is blowing up right now. Is it exceeding expectations? How are you feeling
00:10:14about the response you're getting? You played it on Jimmy Fallon's show a few weeks back.
00:10:19Just taking that all in.
00:10:20Yeah, it's been totally a surreal experience. A lot of bands come back from eras past, like
00:10:27the 90s and stuff, and come with different records and that sort of thing. It was never
00:10:30my intent to just make a whole brand new record, a brand new song. It just sort of
00:10:35didn't feel right. I was much more interested in looking through old Sublime bootlegs or
00:10:39unreleased material, and creating remixes of it, and then collabing with other musicians
00:10:45and stuff. And Stick Figure being a forerunner in the scene that Sublime helped found, felt
00:10:49like a good first starting place. I can't confirm that we're working on other stuff
00:10:53too. Cool, unreleased, remixed material with Sublime, and we want to collab with a bunch
00:10:57of different artists, a bunch of different genres. So if you've got a favorite artist
00:11:00out there, at them right now and tell them to hit us up, because we've got a lot of cool
00:11:05stuff in the works.
00:11:07I'll get you out of here on this before you perform, which is going to be fantastic, by
00:11:11the way.
00:11:12We're going to play some music, dude.
00:11:15Some Jacob's Castle songs, maybe some songs from another band. Who's to say? We talked
00:11:21about maybe some stuff going on with Sublime. By the way, these chairs, I don't host these
00:11:28events often.
00:11:29Dude, this is so much fun.
00:11:32It's so hard staying in place. I hope this looks okay on video for you guys. Simple question,
00:11:39I'll get you out of here on this. What's the future of Jacob's Castle?
00:11:43I'm so dizzy now. Well, future's me hopefully not throwing up now. We have so much amazing
00:11:50stuff. I just finished all the recording for my second record. I haven't told anybody
00:11:56about this. It's called I Owe You a Castle, Inside of You a Castle. I'm so excited. We
00:12:01got all the tracking done for it. It sounds amazing. I'm hoping to drop a single maybe
00:12:05later this year or early next year.
00:12:08The future is having that out there. There's a bunch of just that calm and through line,
00:12:12the story's being continued, all this weird, cool little interactive stuff. We're also
00:12:16going to be going on tour in the fall, mostly East Coast. Sorry to all my beautiful West
00:12:20Coast people out here, but we got to give the East Coast some love too. I know, I know.
00:12:24We're going on tour with an amazing band called Little Stranger. Additionally, beyond that,
00:12:29me and my guitar player Zane are starting up our own production slash record label slash
00:12:34clothing services. We're putting on a bunch of live local events. We're hoping to do them
00:12:39monthly. We're just going to boost them up as big as we can and put on all of the awesome
00:12:42local artists that we like.
00:12:44Speaking of locals only, we can't steal your name, so we're going to have to call it something
00:12:47different.
00:12:48Well, hey, we can collab on that.
00:12:50I think we should collab on that. I think it would be really cool. That's the future
00:12:54for Jacob's Castle and Sublime. We got so much amazing stuff for both projects coming
00:12:58out, all you guys. I really couldn't tell you how much the support means to me, for
00:13:01real.
00:13:02Jacob, to say that you, everyone here to say that you are important to K-Rock would be
00:13:11a massive understatement. It goes even beyond that. It's just such a special honor for us
00:13:16all to be in this room tonight to support local music. Locals Only, by the way, is Sunday
00:13:21night at eight on K-Rock. We'll keep supporting Southern California bands forever. Thank you
00:13:27for being here.
00:13:28Let's do it. Yes. We'll show you guys some of the new stuff coming up. You guys want
00:13:30to hear some new songs tonight from the record too? We're going to debut them for the first
00:13:34time here tonight. K-Rock, Hellfaw in the Soundspace, Locals Only. We are so happy to
00:13:38be here. Miles, thank you, my man.
00:13:39Thank you, sir. Appreciate you, man.
00:13:41What's up, everybody? Welcome to the Hellfaw in the Soundspace at K-Rock, a very special
00:13:49Locals Only presented edition. Please welcome Jacob's Castle.
00:14:11How we all feeling tonight, folks? Oh my goodness gracious. It is so good to get to be here.
00:14:17There's no place we'd rather be than right here, right now. Zane, how you feeling over
00:14:24there, man? Feeling wonderful? Freshie, how about you? Jordy, what about you, buddy? Make
00:14:31some noise for my amazing band, the boys of Jacob's Castle.
00:14:41Are you ready to rumble?
00:14:45Okay, well the first one, guys, goes a little bit something like this.
00:14:55Ladies and gentlemen!
00:14:58Jacob's Castle!
00:15:28In the city where the beach is long I know you want me in your city for a while
00:15:35But I think I'm really running out of time So I'm gonna go ahead and make a scene
00:15:41Stop! Now look at me, I'm playing with fire
00:15:45And I'm cooking with grease I could burn a million dollars
00:15:51Without a little gasoline I'd set the town up on fire
00:15:57What's drunk in the sea Will go somewhere else by tomorrow
00:16:03But you'll never even know it was me
00:16:06Look at me, I'm playing with fire
00:16:12Look at me, I'm playing with fire
00:16:18Now, is there any play with fire?
00:16:22Every day that you wanna keep burning I can feel the heat dripping on me
00:16:28Some people just never learn About another mile I'm chasing
00:16:34Just another little light that's fading If I ever make it back someday I know
00:16:40It'll be my last mistake
00:16:43Silence, everybody start a little riot It's hard to keep your cool when you're on fire
00:16:50So I'm dropping all the magic I see
00:16:54Look at me, I'm playing with fire And I'm cooking with grease
00:17:00I could burn a million dollars Without a little gasoline
00:17:06I'd set the whole town on fire What's drunk in the sea
00:17:12I'll be someone else by tomorrow But you'll never even know it was me
00:17:18Look at me, I'm playing with fire
00:17:24Look at me, I'm playing with fire
00:17:48Give it up for the one time!
00:17:51Give it up for me two times!
00:17:54Give it up for me three trillion times!
00:18:03I didn't count but I think that was exactly three trillion drum hits, Jordy. That was so amazing.
00:18:07Alright boys, what do we feel like playing next?
00:18:10Oh, this one's one of my favorites on the record. This one's called Lights Out.
00:18:14We know it? Okay, let's do it.
00:18:19Ooh, baby why do you love your home?
00:18:26Ooh, baby why do you love it when Sunday is clean and it's sunny?
00:18:34I see that like many CDs that you bought when I got clean
00:18:38And we'll reminisce about a dozen things we did like when we went to Hundred Gags
00:18:43And I think I miss it going out to shows, staying home and watching
00:18:47Episodes of JoJo no Kimi yo na Bouken
00:18:50I had a lot of time, more than enough to move on with my life
00:18:54By the way, I think I love you, I think I love you, I think I love you, I think I love you
00:19:01I really think I do
00:19:03But baby why'd you lock up? I'm running the light bulb
00:19:07So dark, so hard to find you
00:19:10Stay up and wait until tomorrow
00:19:15Oh, baby why'd you lock up?
00:19:17If I was defeated like the light got to me
00:19:20I'd always believe that you'd be my Misa Misa
00:19:23It hurts to pretend
00:19:25Fantasyland's just a curse that I have
00:19:28But damn, I still remember
00:19:30Talking every day, taking up all that joking
00:19:33Watching episodes of Shigeki no Ki again
00:19:36I had a lot of time, more than enough to move on with my life
00:19:40But baby why'd you lock up?
00:19:42I'm running the light bulb
00:19:44So dark, so hard to find you
00:19:47Stay up and wait until tomorrow
00:19:50Oh, baby why'd you lock up?
00:19:53If I was defeated like the light got to me
00:19:56I'd always believe that you'd be my Misa Misa
00:19:59It hurts to pretend
00:20:01Fantasyland's just a curse that I have
00:20:04But damn, I still remember
00:20:06So dark, so hard to find you
00:20:09Stay up and pray until tomorrow
00:20:12Oh, baby why'd you lock up?
00:20:20Baby why'd you lock up?
00:20:26Baby why'd you lock up?
00:20:28I think I love you, I think I love you
00:20:31I think I, I think I, I really think I do
00:20:36Oh, oh, oh
00:20:48Did I hear close enough?
00:20:51We can do that one
00:20:53We can take requests
00:20:58Oh my God, guys
00:21:00I still can't believe we're doing here, man
00:21:02We spent so much time doing the
00:21:05If you don't mind me getting real
00:21:06We spent so much time doing the music band thing
00:21:08You start thinking, you know, what the hell am I doing it for?
00:21:11And then stuff like this happens, man
00:21:13Something you never, never thought would happen, so
00:21:16The fact that I see some beautiful faces out there
00:21:18that have been following along for a minute
00:21:19Both fans of my dad's and my work
00:21:21It really means so much, guys, you have no idea
00:21:25And the fact to do it here with K-Rock?
00:21:27Who hasn't heard of K-Rock?
00:21:29That's so amazing
00:21:32So guys, if you ever feel not right-sized enough
00:21:35For the world around you, and Lord knows
00:21:37I do all the goddamn time
00:21:39Know that if you're not good enough
00:21:41Well, here at Jacob's Castle, you can at least be close enough
00:21:51Go!
00:22:00Close enough
00:22:05Close enough to give up
00:22:10Close enough to call it a try
00:22:15I'm close enough
00:22:21Trying to give
00:22:24I'm trying to give just, just, just one fuck
00:22:30Trying to give a good performance
00:22:35It's close enough
00:22:38Come on, boys
00:22:40Cause I try to try
00:22:45I can't even see the finish line
00:22:52Close enough to get involved
00:22:56I'm close enough to call it a try
00:23:02I'm crying when I'm not with you
00:23:07Close enough
00:23:10Close enough
00:23:13Showing off
00:23:15Yeah, Shorty, I love that drum beat
00:23:18Showing off
00:23:20Just to show
00:23:23Showing off, but I'm not out of time
00:23:28I'm close enough
00:23:32Come on!
00:23:33I try to try
00:23:38And leave without saying goodbye
00:23:43I'm close enough to get involved
00:23:49I'm close enough to call it a try
00:23:54I'm crying when I'm not with you
00:24:00Close enough
00:24:03Close enough
00:24:05Let's go!
00:24:14I try to stop
00:24:20But I think that was my final try
00:24:26I'm close enough
00:24:32Close enough
00:24:35Oh, God, I am
00:24:38I'm crying when I'm not with you
00:24:43Close enough

00:58:02So that's the love song
00:58:03of the set.
00:58:04You gotta put it
00:58:05in a love song.
00:58:07But there's something
00:58:08a lot more important than love
00:58:09that I want to talk about
00:58:10here tonight, folks,
00:58:11while I got your attention
00:58:12undividedly.
00:58:13And it's not
00:58:14the opposite of love.
00:58:15No, no, in fact,
00:58:16a big part of it,
00:58:17it's called
00:58:18not giving a fuck,
00:58:19you know?
00:58:20You have to,
00:58:21at one point or another
00:58:22in your life,
00:58:23say, what am I
00:58:24giving a fuck about?
00:58:25What am I giving a fuck for?
00:58:26And then you start
00:58:27tallying up the days
00:58:28and the minutes
00:58:29and the months
00:58:30and the hours
00:58:31and you do the carbon dating
00:58:32and you realize
00:58:33you get it down
00:58:34to a science
00:58:35of when you stop
00:58:36giving a fuck.
00:58:37Didn't we have that song
00:58:38we were messing around
00:58:40with?
00:58:41Something like...
00:58:44Yeah.
00:58:46I stopped giving a fuck
00:58:48Two hours ago
00:58:51And now I feel better
00:58:53I stopped giving a fuck
00:58:55Two hours ago
00:58:58And now I feel better
00:59:00It's a drug truck
00:59:01Or if it's a love song
00:59:03Put your fingers
00:59:04in your ears
00:59:05And go la-la-la-la
00:59:06I stopped giving a fuck
00:59:08Two hours ago
00:59:11And now I feel
00:59:15Join me!
00:59:17Go!
00:59:18People all
00:59:19They wonder how
00:59:20I don't give a fuck
00:59:22I make it look easy
00:59:24When there's a
00:59:25Problem
00:59:26So I just
00:59:27shrug it off
00:59:28I really don't care
00:59:30It won't be long
00:59:31It won't be long
00:59:32Before we're all done
00:59:34Without somebody
00:59:35with me here
00:59:37So I just let us
00:59:38turn to dust
00:59:40I really don't care
00:59:41I stopped giving a fuck
00:59:43Two hours ago
00:59:46And now I feel better

01:00:01Close your eyes slowly
01:00:03Move the dial
01:00:04Make it all better
01:00:06If it goes wrong
01:00:07We'll make it up
01:00:08As we go along
01:00:10They really won't care
01:00:12They never seem to notice
01:00:13Never seem to see
01:00:15Turns out everything I like
01:00:17is bad for me
01:00:19So I feel no shame
01:00:21And if it's all the same
01:00:22I really don't care
01:00:24I stopped giving a fuck
01:00:26Two hours ago

01:00:34Problems
01:00:35Melting away
01:00:36It's a trick
01:00:37Or it's a love song
01:00:39Put your fingers
01:00:40In your ears and go
01:00:41La la la la
01:00:42I stopped giving a fuck

01:01:02La la la la
01:01:03I can't hear a thing
01:01:04La la la la
