A summery feel for Friday, with high pressure in control. Dry and warm for most today, apart from a few blustery showers in the far north-east of Scotland. These showers will ease through the evening to leave a dry and clear night, though with some cloud approaching south-east England. This is the Met Office UK Weather forecast for the afternoon of 30/08/24. Bringing you today’s weather forecast is Alex Burkill.

00:00Hello, very good day to you. Meteorological autumn is knocking on the door this weekend,
00:05but for the time being, still a bit of a summery feel to things. That's because high pressure
00:09is firmly in control at the moment, and you no doubt know that high pressure generally
00:14means settled weather, and that's what we're going to have plenty of today. Lots of dry
00:18weather to be had for most of us, not everywhere. There are some showers, particularly towards
00:23the far northeast of Scotland, and here some blustery winds as well, but all of this is
00:27gradually going to ease as we go through the day. Otherwise, for many, like I say,
00:31it's a dry story and there will be a decent amount of sunshine, but some cloud bubbling
00:36up could perhaps become a bit more widespread as we go through the afternoon. With the sunshine,
00:41it's going to feel pretty warm, temperatures peaking in the low to mid-twenties towards
00:45the southeast, a few degrees fresher than this further north and west, but for many,
00:50temperatures are up a little bit compared to yesterday. Sticking with the generally
00:54fine weather for most as we go through into this evening, any showers towards the northeast
00:58will clear away, and for most, it is actually going to be a dry and clear night, lots of
01:03the cloud clearing away. That being said, towards the southeast, we will see a bit more
01:08cloud pushing its way in, perhaps the winds picking up a little bit as well, and there
01:11may be one or two showers developing as we head towards dawn on Saturday. Otherwise,
01:16with the clear skies, it is going to be a bit of a cool night, perhaps not quite as
01:20low temperature-wise as it was last night, but nonetheless, a bit of a fresh start for
01:25some. First thing on Saturday morning, albeit in the southeast where we have that cloud,
01:29it is going to be a warmer start here. There may be a few pockets of mist and fog first
01:34thing across parts of northern, western and central parts on Saturday morning, but these
01:38will quickly clear because the sun still has some decent strength behind it, even though
01:42it is going to be the last day of August. Across central and northern parts of the UK,
01:48staying pretty sunny through much of the day, just a bit of fair weather cloud bubbling
01:51up, but elsewhere towards the south, a slightly different story. There will be some clouds
01:56spreading its way north and westwards across some parts, and with this, then there is the
02:01potential for some showers to kick off. Now, a bit of uncertainty about the showers, how
02:05quickly they are going to develop, if at all, but if they do kick off, we could see some
02:11heavy, possibly even thundery ones, so do watch out for those. Temperatures again reaching
02:16low to mid-20s for some of us, well for most of us really, many towns and cities just about
02:21getting into the low 20s, perhaps rural spots a little bit fresher than this and a bit fresher
02:26towards those coastal parts as well. Later on as we go through Saturday evening, I think
02:31the showers across the south could become a bit more widespread, perhaps a greater chance
02:35of catching a heavy thundery downpour as we go through Saturday night into Sunday morning
02:39as well. Across southern areas, further north, it is staying dry and clear and again, a cooler
02:44night here, but in the south, it could be pretty warm. Then looking ahead to Sunday
02:48quite quickly, and the showers look like they could become a bit more widespread. Greatest
02:53chance of some thundery downpours across eastern parts, but they could spread a little bit
02:57further westwards into more central areas at times too, and worth noting that these
03:01could be impactful. We could see some intense rain, some large hail, perhaps even some strong
03:05gusts of wind, so do watch out for those. Otherwise, and away from the far north of
03:10Scotland where it's likely to stay quite sunny, it is going to be slightly cloudier
03:14than on Saturday, though some brighter breaks could develop in the south-southeast later
03:19on and with that, with some warm humid air coming in, we could see temperatures rising.
03:23Mid-20s quite likely could get to the high 20s if we do see any decent sunshine developing.
03:29There is some wet weather waiting out in the west as we go into the beginning of next week,
03:33so it does look like next week is going to get off to a bit of a wet start for many of
03:36us. But the other thing I did want to point out, we have released our storm names for
03:41the 2024-2025 storm season. Do check those out if you're interested in seeing if your
03:47name has made it. I'll see you again soon. Bye-bye.
