Two-time Super Bowl Champ, former Pats' LB, Rob Ninkovich, calls! What are his thoughts on the Brissett starting choice? Was the choice mostly made by HC Jerod Mayo?
Transcript
00:00Good morning, Robert.
00:01What's up?
00:02Good.
00:03Hey, good morning.
00:04I got an issue with all you media guys.
00:05Can I, can we talk about it real quick?
00:07Yes.
00:08Yes.
00:09Okay.
00:10Okay.
00:11Here we go.
00:12First of all, the, the whole Mayo and me and him talking and giving all everybody information.
00:19Weren't you all complaining about bill and how they gave, he gave nothing to anybody
00:24for years.
00:25And now you have Mayo who actually gives you something that you can talk about, right?
00:32Can you be happy about that?
00:33I got, you listen to all these radio shows where people are like, why is Mayo telling
00:37everybody?
00:38So he's just giving you guys something to talk about.
00:41Perfect.
00:42Great.
00:43And then the quarterback thing.
00:44Okay.
00:45You want to put Drake may out there, a rookie quarterback to get baptized and killed by
00:49an offensive line that they're trying to figure out.
00:51No, you have to protect.
00:53You protect the young guy.
00:55You don't throw them out there in the fire and get them killed and get them beat up and
00:58emotionally and physically and mentally killed.
01:01No, you go with the veteran guy, put the veteran guy out there first.
01:06You try to figure out your offensive.
01:08It takes the first month of September to figure out your roster, your lineup.
01:12Maybe you can claim a couple guys off of other teams and bring in a couple of tackles and
01:17you get a better offensive line in place.
01:19You feel more comfortable.
01:21And then at the time, the right time, you, and you put in the young guy, you have more
01:26confidence in your offense, your offensive line.
01:29He has more confidence and things work out in a better manner than putting them out there
01:35and you get them killed.
01:37And then the whole fan base is going crazy.
01:39Like why'd you pick them at three, blah, blah, blah, just relax.
01:42But the veteran guy stinks.
01:44And if that's the case, why, why is every other quarterback that was drafted in the
01:48first round who's behind Scribine's quarterbacks?
01:51Why ain't they sitting?
01:53Wiggy, you think he stinks?
01:55Jacoby Brissett?
01:56Yes.
01:57You don't stink?
01:58He's had, how many reps has he had?
02:00He's practicing with the team.
02:02You go in there in the preseason.
02:03Okay.
02:04So here's another thing.
02:05Wiggy.
02:06He got one.
02:07When you were playing, they put.
02:08He started it.
02:09Don't cut me off, Wiggy.
02:10Wiggy, don't cut me off.
02:11Listen.
02:12Go ahead.
02:13Listen.
02:14Wiggy, you're out there at your first team tight end.
02:17How do you go against the twos or the threes?
02:19How are you going to make them look?
02:21If I'm the first team, I should dominate.
02:25You should dominate.
02:26Okay.
02:27Right.
02:28So you're seeing all these guys, you're seeing, uh, you know, quarterbacks and linebackers
02:32and receivers against second and 13 guys.
02:36You have to look at these guys and you have to look at the players against number ones.
02:41We really haven't seen anybody against a true starting offense or defense or anything.
02:46My point, Nick, is this.
02:47Why don't we wait?
02:48My point is this, Nick.
02:49Bursette got reps against the twos in the preseason games and was throwing interceptions.
02:55He stinks.
02:56Why isn't Jaden Daniels sitting then in Washington?
03:00Why isn't Caleb Williams sitting in Chicago?
03:03Why isn't Bo Nix sitting in Denver?
03:07When you're a bad team and you draft a guy that high, just like Carolina did last year
03:12with Bryce Young and CJ Stroud.
03:14You play that guy.
03:16You don't sit in behind a journeyman backup who's not very good when we talk in the other
03:21day about the commander's O-line and how bad it's thanks for it's worse than the paper.
03:25Yeah.
03:26Wait till the commanders.
03:27Wait till we watch the commanders in Denver on a couple of weeks.
03:29You're going to Holy, this is terrible, but I'm telling you, I would ask you to be bad
03:35Bo Nix.
03:36And then also to Bo Nix.
03:38Right.
03:39Still.
03:40Is that who he's competing with?
03:41Yeah.
03:42Like, come on.
03:43All right.
03:44Like you got Bo Nix.
03:46You put Bo Nix in.
03:47It's also you certain, certain places, certain teams, they're going to tell you who you're
03:52going to put in there.
03:53Right.
03:54They're going to tell you who to put.
03:55Like, okay.
03:56Certain teams.
03:57You're like, okay.
03:58The teams are going to constantly.
03:59You think the commanders are going to be a playoff team?
04:00No, no.
04:01I'm not saying that.
04:02I just think on one question.
04:03I just figured this out, by the way.
04:07Is there some sort of opening on the defensive staff over there?
04:10Oh, if there is.
04:11Just what?
04:12Nope.
04:13Not this year.
04:14Nope.
04:15Not for Ninko.
04:16I'm in coach.
04:17I am coaching eight, eight-year-olds.
04:18It's like football.
04:19Okay.
04:20I don't have time for this professionally.
04:21Did you say not for this year?
04:23Yeah.
04:24No, not for, not for these, not for this 40 year old man.
04:28No way.
04:29I might only got, you know, Hey, I hit my head a lot.
04:35I might only have 10 or 20 years left.
04:37I'm not going to just.
04:38While you're on the phone.
04:39Forever.
04:40Forever.
04:41Did you, did you text Mayo and say, Hey, I'm on the radio defending you right now.
04:44Tune in.
04:45The only way.
04:46No, the problem.
04:47I have a problem with everybody listening to interviews and saying, Oh, Mayo talks, you
04:56know, he gives you all that.
04:57Listen, you guys had 20 something years of a guy being like, um, yeah, get out of here.
05:03Like get away from me.
05:04You media guys.
05:06But I think I think Mayo wants Drake may to play.
05:13He just doesn't have the power and Nick has nothing to worry about when it comes to defense.
05:17Alex Wolf said, Hey, you can go hot.
05:20Elliot Wolf, whatever the hell his name is.
05:21You can hire defensive guys.
05:23Every offensive guy has to be an Elliot Wolf guy.
05:26If I was going to, you know, say, Hey, any chance may you can hire me next year?
05:30He's probably like, listen, I got no control over that one.
05:33This is just the way I look at it.
05:35Mink.
05:36It's a shame because I don't think that Mayo Wolf and van Pelt are on the same page.
05:45Are you in the building?
05:46No, I ain't in the building, but I can connect the dots.
05:49Everybody that's connected us through what?
05:53No, no.
05:54In the training camp.
05:55We don't even hit each other.
05:56They got freaking guardian cats on their head.
05:59Here's how I connect the dots.
06:00The Elliot Wolf was in Green Bay with Alex van Pelt.
06:04Alex van Pelt hired pretty much everybody from the Cleveland staff.
06:09Every guy that Gerard Mayo interviewed for the offensive coordinator that had
06:13connections to him got passed up or didn't get the job.
06:17So the offensive coordinator was hired, not by Gerard Mayo, but was hired by
06:22Elliot Wolf because of the relationship that they had in Cleveland.
06:26And I believe those two, because Alex van Pelt said it himself.
06:31Jacoby Brissette is our starter.
06:33When Mayo told us last week that May is outplaying Brissette.
06:38All right.
06:39Well, listen, Niko, you are, you're okay with this decision.
06:41You think that Gerard Mayo made the right decision, right?
06:45I taught, I've said this from day one, that no matter what it looks like, you
06:51don't throw them out there right away.
06:53You don't throw them out the right.
06:54Especially, now especially, now this is the main reason for that.
06:59Their offensive line, to me, is a work in progress, right?
07:03They need to get a few pieces in.
07:05I thought they should have tried to, instead of going after a receiver, they
07:10should have tried to trade or get a big-time tackle in here because you need
07:14a tackle, blindside guy, protect the quarterback, because we know that these
07:18young quarterbacks, you've got a couple of young guys on this roster
07:21quarterback-wise, can move and get out of some situations.
07:24They have the ability to scramble.
07:26So, what I would do is try to get the offensive line solidified.
07:32You have more of a moving pocket.
07:34Hey, okay, if this breaks down, receivers, go backyard football, get open,
07:39quarterback, move around in the pocket, extend the play, because that's really
07:43hard as a defender to stop a mobile quarterback that can move in the pocket
07:47and throw the ball down the field.
07:49That's what I want to see out of this offense, but you can't have a guy
07:52hitting his back foot and getting the back of his head caved in, right?
07:55You've got to have some type of offensive line, and it especially matters
07:59on the edges.
08:00The interior, I'm not worried about the interior, guys.
08:03They've got some interior pieces.
08:05I'm talking about the corners, which, nowadays, good pass rushers are making
08:09$25 million, $30 million a year.
08:11They're paid to get to the quarterback.
08:13You've got to protect the quarterback.
08:15All right, and then just to be clear, because we've got to go, but you would
08:20be okay as a player without playing somebody all training camp and then
08:25sitting for the year?
08:28It's outplaying is all subjective, right?
08:32Okay.
08:33I'm just going by what the head coach said on the show.
08:37Exactly.
08:38You all are just tuning in and taking it and running with it.
08:41All right.
08:42Maybe it's a psychological thing.
08:44He's boosting up the kid.
08:45Maybe, hey, you had a great camp.
08:47You outperformed the veteran, but guess what?
08:50We're not going to throw you out there to the wolves.
08:52We're going to protect you.
08:53Keep doing what you're doing.
08:55Keep balling.
08:56It's going to be yours one day.
08:58You're going to get the keys, but not today.
09:00Not today.
09:01Rob Minkovich, as always, a pleasure.
09:03I'm so glad you called.
09:05We'll see you soon.
09:06All right, bud?
09:07All right, see you guys.
