00:00And joining us right now a guy who was a part of this event when he played for the New England Patriots
00:05He's on the other side now
00:08Calling preseason games the great Devin McCourty joins us this morning. Hey, Devin. How are you?
00:13Good, man. That's a nice introduction great Devin McCourty. I'll take that
00:18Birthday boy Devin McCourty birthday yesterday. Oh, thank you. Appreciate it. He has the same birthday as his brother. Did you know that?
00:26I
00:28How old are you guys
00:3237 you don't look a day over 32
00:35I guess now look on the broadcast last week look like look like the two you could go right out there put the pads on
00:41And and hit them like it was yesterday
00:44That's the goal to work out, but not run. So if they asked me to run I'll be in bad shape
00:49Just from the look I'm decent
00:51They actually might be calling you Devin. I don't know
00:57What do you from the outside you when you look at your odd Mayo, what do you think of the job?
01:02He is doing so far. Okay, can you judge it?
01:05I mean, it's preseason so can you can you judge it now or can you or have an opinion now?
01:09Are you gonna wait till they get into the regular season?
01:12Well, I think he's coaching in the New England area. So you everyone's definitely gonna have an opinion
01:17But I think to actually judge it. They're gonna take time
01:20I think they're still trying to figure things out
01:22I know last week with Drake may only playing was a six or seven plays
01:26That was just like a huge issue like why but I think you you go and watch, you know
01:32I don't watch the the joint practice yesterday, but reading the reports
01:35I think you see they're struggling to find the exact line to put in front and I think
01:40When you're struggling with that, you're trying to get you Colby ready to play
01:43You're trying to see how far Drake may develops this but so many snaps
01:47You should put David Andrews out there for instance
01:49Because if you lose him, then you have no center for the rest of the season
01:52So I think they're still trying to get through certain things. He's making decisions
01:56He's figuring out his own path
01:58But I said this back and you know when he first took over it's going to take time for this team
02:03You know
02:03This team has struggled the last few years obviously last year being the worst year of it all
02:08But the last few years hasn't been I would say the prototypical New England Patriots teams
02:13You've seen through years past so it's definitely gonna take more time than just a training camp
02:18So the the limited snaps in that preseason game or the
02:23limited snaps and training camp with the ones is less in your mind less an indictment on
02:29Drake May and what they think of him and more on
02:33Trying to trying to keep them safe when it comes to struggling the struggling offensive line
02:40Yeah, I think I think it's two parts. I think Jacoby Bruce said they see as a starter right now
02:44And I think when you see that you can't you can't decide that you Kobe's gonna get limited reps because you want to develop Drake
02:51May but then turn as you Kobe
02:53Come September and say all right now. It's your time to go be the starter
02:56So I think they're trying to get you Kobe to play with the ones but also
03:00Work Drake may in there a little bit with the one team a little bit and I think you know
03:05We'll see how the game goes this Thursday
03:07But I always remember being in New England and there be some joint practices where I might only get three plays off and the whole
03:14You know seven or seven team periods and then I wouldn't play a snap in a preseason
03:19And I think they're still going to balance that out how they I didn't see the exact numbers
03:23But how they play those guys yesterday and then what they do today
03:27Compared to how they're going to balance out of who's going to play Thursday night
03:30I think that'll be a factor, but I think yeah, I think Mayo has said it right now
03:34They don't see drink man as the starter
03:36So they're trying to develop a team and get a team ready to go that's going to have to Kobe at the helm
03:41But also trying to develop the number three pick
03:44Dev when you look at that, I
03:47Don't agree with it and I want to know like if you were the coach of this team
03:50I feel like you draft the kid number three overall just like in Washington. You put him out there
03:56You get him as many reps as possible
03:58Yeah, he might get beat up and it might be a down season
04:01But you're not gonna do much better with Jacoby percent at least next year when he's ready to come in for a second year
04:08He'll have that whole year under his belt, what would you do if you were the coach?
04:13Would you take the Mayo approach or would you go in the line of?
04:16Trying to get him as many reps and seeing like, okay. It's time to swim with the big dogs
04:21No, I wouldn't I want to get as many reps. I just look at I think Zach Wilson on the Jets
04:26I think if they could get that back. I don't think I don't think they would do it the way they did
04:31I think they would take their time put somebody else out there and let Zach Wilson develop kind of what
04:36Their plan was the next year when I brought out Rogers and sadly Rogers got hurt
04:41but I think we've seen
04:42Throughout the NFL when you put the young quarterbacks in there right away
04:45And it just it doesn't go well and then it gets worse and worse as the season goes on
04:50Sometimes those guys never recover. They just they just end up being you know, not as good of a player
04:55You look at Sam Darnell who's getting a second chance now
04:58But he early got on the field early with the Jets the team wasn't good around them offensive line weapons
05:04And then it didn't work out and he was seen as a bus. He's getting another chance now
05:08So I think once you put Drake May out there
05:10then you got to have a plan to keep them safe to keep them upright give him what he needs or
05:15It goes bad and that guy never ends up becoming a player that you thought he could be
05:20Devin we can sit here and I'll have opinions when it comes to Matt Jude on and how he's handled this offseason and heading into
05:27This season we can speculate on what the meeting was like between he and Gerard Mayo and getting him back in practice
05:33How do you feel like he's handled this as somebody who knows him?
05:36And what do you think has gone on between he and Gerard Mayo to have that behind closed-door meeting and then get him back out?
05:43in practice
05:44Yeah, I think overall. I think he had one bad day. I think the frustration of trying to get a new contract
05:51I think you see around the lead the way the new CBA is structured guys decide
05:56Hey, if I want to get a new contract, I'm just going to go to the building
06:00I'm going to decide what I want to do day after day create some plan with the coach
06:04But I think you saw right there was the plan that they were going to Jude
06:08I wanted it probably to get done sooner
06:10So I think that was one bad day
06:12But I think overall you see like you see around the league these teams and the players
06:17Have an agreement of what they're trying to do. They're trying to work on a contract behind closed door
06:21But while on the field, whatever they decide is what they're doing. You see what Brandon are you you've seen it with Trent Williams?
06:27You see it across the league with different players
06:29Because this used to just be simple if you want a new contract you don't show up
06:33So nobody paid attention to what you were doing because you wasn't there you see with CD land because he's on a rookie contract
06:40He just doesn't show up
06:41But the smart thing for these guys to do I think different than what Hassan Reddick's doing on the Jets
06:46Is to go be around the team don't take a $50,000 fine a day
06:50And I think that's what you know is doing but you see since then I thought we highlighted last preseason game
06:55The minute it gives up the edge Jude on sitting there coaching him up for a full 30 seconds
07:01He's a part of the team when you're everybody knows as a better player when you're in that building you're with your guys
07:06You're not necessarily thinking about your contract now
07:09We get on the field you think about not getting hurt and all those things
07:11And I think that's how they're going about and it hopefully gets worked out soon because the longer it goes on
07:17I think then it starts to impact the team the season and what you're planning to do
07:21You're fine with the social media stuff though like how he's handled that
07:25I just think every guy is different. I think in New England. We're used to seeing
07:30Bill Belichick very strict on social media strict on the media, but I think every guy is different
07:36What they decide to do is what they decide to do
07:38we usually see we usually see other teams where we see a guy delete the team from their social media a
07:44Reporter checks it out. It goes viral on social media so or so deleted this team from their Instagram account
07:50They want to be traded so to me in this day and age
07:53You're going to see guys react on social media
07:56Differently than we've seen in years past
07:59Devin oh you talked about those guys in the Jets that had teams that weren't ready to compete in the quarterbacks were ruined by playing
08:05Early, and I think you're right
08:06Are you surprised that they didn't do more in the offseason to address the offensive line?
08:12It seemed like a clear need and to sit here now as you know Devin better than anybody that
08:17Offensive lines need good depth as well because there's going to be a guy that gets injured
08:22Are you surprised they didn't do more to shore up that line this offseason I?
08:26Won't say surprise. I would say if I was a fan
08:29I would want it
08:29I would have wanted them to do more, but I think if you look across the league you don't see many free agent
08:35Offense alignment signing because I think especially over the last few years for whatever reason
08:40College offices how the game is structured now
08:43you don't have that many offense alignment coming into the league where it's just like a dime a dozen or
08:49You know you don't look and say
08:5125 teams have these great offensive line line
08:54Play so I think you even look at like the Giants a team that for the last like three or four years
09:00It's like hey, they need to improve their offensive line. Hey, they need to improve their offensive line
09:04So they go and sign John running and they signed Jermaine a little manure
09:08But like if that doesn't work this year, and they still struggle up front you would look in the offseason you say hey
09:14I thought they did address it, but it didn't work out so I think they're trying to address it
09:18I think it's hard especially what they're struggling it seems to be is that the tackle positions
09:22That's probably even harder than finding a good guard or a good center finding two good tackles let alone just one tackle
09:29So I think they're trying to figure that out, but of course I think anybody who watches the team
09:34They'll watch what transpired last year you would want to say hey
09:38Let's go get the offensive line, but I think more importantly over the last few years. They just haven't developed guys
09:44They drafted guys that brought guys in it just hasn't worked out in a year's past when they had Dante Svarnica
09:49It just seemed like whatever five guys went out there
09:53I don't care where they were from where they got drafted. It just seemed they were a cohesive unit. They work together
09:58They were able to do what they needed to do and it also helped
10:01Having a guy at quarterback who understood what was in front of them and how he needed to operate and handle the offense so you lose
10:08All those different things and now you're trying to piece it back together brand new coach
10:12It's going to take a while not only to get the players in there
10:14But to be able to develop them the way that you want and to find out I think for Mayo is is
10:19Everybody on that staff the right person is this working together like all of these things have to be worked out over the next couple
10:25of months
10:26Devin McCordy, I really appreciate you taking the time with us this morning, and we had David Ortiz on this show yesterday
10:33he talked about coming here and almost immediately understanding the
10:40Obligation that
10:42athletes in this city feel toward the Jimmy fund and toward
10:46Visiting patients at Dana Farber. Was it that was it the same for you when you when you came to the New England Patriots?
10:53Yeah, I think the community in that area is just different to any other area
10:58I think of all the different tragedies that happen and you usually right away here stories of
11:04Sports figures in Boston, whether it's donating money donating time. They always show up and I've been a Dana Farber
11:10I've been the Boston Medical Center. I've been the children's you just always see
11:15Different athletes stepping up and being a part of the community
11:18I think it's one of the coolest things you see
11:21In sports because the other side of that is when those athletes go through different things whether it's good or bad
11:26You always hear stories of fans coming up and showing up you think about Jalen Brown losing a ring
11:32And a fan saying hey, I got your ring. Let's meet up take pictures. I'll give you a ring back
11:37There's just so many unique stories like that. I think of athletes and a community bonding together
11:42So it's awesome to see what you guys are doing with the Jimmy fund
11:45You guys always step up and right in the middle of whatever is helping out people
11:50Well, and we'll see you Thursday night on the game. Am I right about that?
11:54I'll be there. All right. I really enjoy it. I thought you had a great job last week
11:59So we'll look forward to it on Thursday night
12:02Appreciate it man. Here's to doing better. It's all about improving
12:07All right, Devin McCordy, thank you we appreciate it. All right, that is Devin McCord
