00:00Transport Minister Anthony Loke told a press conference on Wednesday that airlines will soon have to provide mandatory full refunds to passengers if their flights are delayed for five hours or more.
00:12He said this will come into force from September 2, following amendments to the Malaysian Aviation Consumer Protection Code 2016.
00:21He said this will apply to passengers who choose not to proceed with their flight and they will go for different flights instead.
00:28He said there is previously no such provision as the airline only has to provide food and other compensation, and he added that this will be an improvement for the passengers.
00:38He said the amendments will see refunds for flights disrupted due to circumstances like changing weather patterns.
00:44He said airlines can also offer refunds in the form of travel vouchers and credit shells, but passengers will decide on their preferred refund method.
00:54Other improvements that will come into effect in January next year include the need for airline to notify passengers of any changes to the flight, at least two weeks prior to the date.
01:05He added that airlines will face a maximum penalty of 200,000 ringgit if they fail to adhere to the amended code.
01:13For subsequent violations, the penalty fee will increase tenfold compared to the first offence.
