00:00Hello everybody and welcome back to another episode of my proposed future Japanese Tank
00:04Tech Tree series.
00:05Now in today's episode as you can see we're going to be dealing with the Self-Propelled
00:08Anti-Aircraft Vehicles or SPAA for short.
00:12Basically they're vehicles that have been outfitted with anti-aircraft guns and are
00:16basically designed to deal with enemy aircraft.
00:20Now as you can see here they are going all along the tiers despite mainly having the
00:25same armament.
00:26Now the reason I've done this is because if you try to research say a tier 4 tank and
00:30you're using a tier 1 anti-aircraft vehicle that will give you a negative RP modifier.
00:36Basically you only get something like 70% of what you should get or 50% I can't remember
00:40the exact number.
00:43So this is to avoid that.
00:45They can be different battle ratings and I have done them much lower battle ratings than
00:49you know their contemporaries would normally be so that should help to avoid the problem.
00:54You can see here I've actually added a lot more than I had originally.
00:57Originally I only had 2 but before I did this episode I went and researched a bit more and
01:02found quite a few.
01:03We've got 9 in total, 6 probable, 3 not sure about but yeah it seems like a decent self-propelled
01:11anti-aircraft lineup.
01:14As usual I'll list down the sources I've used in the description below, book sources, internet
01:19sources as well.
01:20One of the ones I'd definitely recommend is by Akira Takizawa.
01:24I've mentioned it before, he goes by the name Taki online and he's got his own website.
01:31If I can't show pictures or you know for whatever reason or there are no pictures I will mention
01:35it or you know link to where you can find pictures but yeah enough of that let's get
01:41straight into the episode.
01:43Now first of all this isn't the first SPAA we're looking at.
01:46The first one we're looking at is the Type 94 with a 20mm cannon on it.
01:50This is a Type 98 with a 20mm cannon on it but I haven't been able to find many pictures
01:56of the Type 94 with a 20mm cannon so I'll link you to any pictures that seem relevant
02:02so you can look at the truck itself.
02:04From what I understand it was actually a 6 wheeler truck which is kind of unusual, usually
02:08there are only 4 wheels I think.
02:10But basically there isn't really much to say about this tank it's a truck with a 20mm cannon
02:15on it much like the German Flak Panzers which are basically tanks with 20mm cannons on them.
02:23So where should it go on the tech tree?
02:24I've put it at tier 1 because obviously it's a starter truck with a not very good cannon.
02:30Battle rating wise the German Flak Panzer starts at 1.3 that's also a 20mm so probably
02:371.3 as well so you know it's not going to be a particularly high ranking, high tier,
02:42high battle rating vehicle so you know it's going to be quite low but I think that would
02:47be a good place for it to be and a good starter self propelled anti-aircraft vehicle.
02:52Now the next vehicle on the tech tree is the prototype anti-aircraft tank number 1 Kaito.
02:59Basically this is a Type 97 Tiki which has been modified as a gun platform for the 20mm
03:06Flak gun.
03:07Now presumably this is going to be quite similar to the Type 97 Tiki normal stats so presumably
03:14around 4-16mm of armour, 26mph top speeds, similar in most ways but of course you're
03:23probably going to have more crew I assume you're going to have a gunner, loader and
03:26a driver rather than just the driver and commander.
03:30Now one of the problems with this, it's got more armour to protect the driver but the
03:35gun platform is just completely exposed there's nothing to block any shots like with a truck
03:39we've got the cabin which isn't particularly great but better than nothing this is just
03:43out in the open a machine gun could deal with them.
03:47So this is probably going to be Japan's version of the Gephardt in a way although you could
03:52probably swap its place with the Type 94 if you wanted to you know it comes down to personal
03:57preference at the moment I think.
04:00Personally I'd put it about the same battle rating as the Gephardt you know 2.0 tier 1
04:06I think it'd be a nice little starter SPAA tank you know proper tank not a truck but
04:11again it's not going to be particularly great compared to some of the other nations self
04:15propelled anti-aircraft vehicles.
04:17Now the next vehicle is one we've already looked at the Type 98 half track also known
04:23as the Kiho with basically a 20mm Flak cannon put on it again there isn't really much to
04:28say about it possibly or probably a slightly higher battle rating than the Tyco again it's
04:35not particularly armored it's quite open but again better than the Tyco which is just completely
04:42in the open I think it would be an okay self propelled anti-aircraft vehicle I would probably
04:48give it a battle rating of 2.3 which is about the same as the Russian self propelled anti-aircraft
04:53gun the GAZ I believe it's called that has a 25mm cannon so you know they're quite similar
04:58but this should theoretically be better off road due to the tracks at the back of the
05:03vehicle.
05:05Now just before we go on to the next vehicle I just want to show you a picture I took in
05:08War Thunder I may have shown you it before but two Type 97s but also two half tracks
05:14the one on the left I believe is the Type 1 Hokie armored personnel carrier but the
05:17one on the right I don't know if it's a Japanese one or a German one.
05:22It does appear to be carrying a 20mm quad flak gun I think a German one which isn't
05:28actually in the game at the moment I don't know if Japan used these during the war I
05:31know the submarine the I-30 tried to bring about 200 back or 220mm anti-aircraft guns
05:37back from France well occupied France it was sunk outside Singapore but apparently they
05:44recovered most of the flak guns so maybe that's going to be used on some of the Japanese self
05:50propelled anti-aircraft guns I'm not entirely sure but I thought I'd you know show the picture
05:54and at least raise the possibility of course it could just also be a placeholder as Japan
05:59doesn't really have any self-propelled anti-aircraft gun in game at the moment and they needed
06:03something to represent the anti-aircraft guns for the Japanese ground forces and arcade
06:09battles.
06:11Now I wasn't sure whether to include this next vehicle because there's only one reference
06:14to it in my illustrated encyclopedia of military vehicles by Ian V Hogg and John Weeks.
06:22Now there isn't a picture of the vehicle but it was based on the Type 95 chassis so there's
06:26a picture of the Type 95 for reference quoting from the book an anti-aircraft vehicle was
06:31made by lengthening the chassis and inserting another set of bogies on top of this longer
06:36hull a twin 20mm mounting was placed and it made a reasonably successful arrangement very
06:41few were built unquote.
06:44That is basically the only information I could find about it any other search has just
06:48brought up the Type 95 self-propelled anti-aircraft vehicle currently in Chinese army service.
06:54I have no idea what the armour would be like I assume 12mm at the front and sides and rear
07:00it also has 9mm at the top and bottom but I don't know if it keeps the turret or loses
07:05the turret I don't know how the speed would be or what the crew would be like I would
07:11like this to be added but I don't think there's going to be that much data which is why I've
07:14bolded it and underlined it the fact there's only one reference to it you know just decreases
07:20the chances of it being added quite badly.
07:23If it was to be added I've put it at tier 2 which is above the tier 1 normal Type 95
07:30simply because you know armour isn't going to be mattering too much because it's a self-propelled
07:33anti-aircraft gun and again I'm trying to spread them all across the tier so you don't
07:38get the negative research bonus but I think it should probably be kind of low tier 2 not
07:46really sure what battle rating probably about battle rating 2.6 because it doesn't it's
07:51not that much of an improvement it's only got slightly better armour but yeah it would
07:55be nice for it to be added but like I say I don't think there's much chance due to the
07:59lack of sources on it.
08:01Now the next vehicle we have a similar problem there is actually picture evidence of this
08:05vehicle and I'll link you to where you can find the pictures or picture but there's no
08:10actual other sources about it but basically it's a Type 2 Kami which seems to have had
08:15a twin 20mm mount input in the back of the rear pontoon I don't know if this was an ad
08:21hoc conversion I believe it was at Pallaloo this was found so I assume it was just a defensive
08:26measure you know put on a tank that wasn't going to be in much use once the invasion
08:31had started not really sure what else to say about it presumably it would still have
08:37the same armour 6-13mm same speed about 23mph whether it would still be amphibious afterwards
08:43or the rest of the armament could be used I have no idea battle rating wise I've put
08:50it tier 3 again because armour and all that doesn't really matter with self-propelled
08:55anti-aircraft guns and to spread the self-propelled anti-aircraft guns across all the tiers again
09:00to avoid the research bonus but again very low battle rating I wouldn't give it more
09:05than 3 really 2.6 around there it would be nice to have it added but I'm not really thinking
09:15there's going to be much of a chance of it being added now the next two vehicles are
09:19quite similar both based on the Type 98 Kini light tank the only difference is that one
09:24seems to have a single mounting for a 20mm gun and the other has a double 20mm mounting
09:30now I believe this is a picture of the double mounting one but again I will link to where
09:33you can find a picture of the single mounting one but basically they took the Type 98 light
09:39tank Kini removed the usual turret and replaced it with a cylindrical open topped one with
09:45a 20mm cannon in it for anti-aircraft work as far as I'm aware it was only a one man
09:51turret so I don't know if he had to do the loading as well I think there was information
09:55about an external loader if they needed it but apparently this wasn't particularly a
10:00good tank and it's kind of easy to see why it's only a single 20mm cannon you know they're
10:07not exactly the most powerful guns in the world presumably it would be quite similar
10:12to the Type 98 Kini 6-16mm of armour 31mph I've put this at higher tier 3 but battle
10:20rating wise I'd suggest it would be better at 3.3-3.7 I believe it goes 3.3-7 for some
10:26reason again it's not going to be a particularly useful tank or self propelled anti-aircraft
10:32vehicle but you know to fill out the tiers and to avoid that negative RP research effect
10:39I think that's a pretty appropriate place to put it but again it's not going to be the
10:43greatest vehicle in the world now after this they started a new project with a twin 20mm
10:49turret mounting but there seems to be a bit of confusion Wikipedia says it was based on
10:54the chassis of the Type 1 Hoki Armoured Personnel Carrier other sources say it was still based
10:59on the Type 98 Kini you know a continuation of that project but names it as the Number
11:043 Soki I believe that kind of makes more sense carrying on with the Type 98 Kini because
11:12I don't know why they've then swapped to an Armoured Personnel Carrier the other source
11:17actually mentions the Armoured Personnel Carrier project being a separate project so
11:21I assume Wikipedia has just got its facts wrong which is why I tend to avoid using it
11:26where possible but basically they completely remodelled the Type 98 Kini they got rid of
11:33the superstructure and the turret and added this platform for the gun and part of the
11:38new superstructure actually covered the lower bit of it to provide some sort of additional
11:41armour protection again it wasn't particularly great you know it was improved because it
11:48has better guns it was actually more of a purpose built anti-aircraft vehicle but still
11:53using 20mm cannons which again weren't all that great even though they'd added an extra
11:57barrel or an extra gun again I've put this about tier 4 very low tier 4 I think this
12:04shouldn't be higher than a battle rating of 4 really again I've put them very low battle
12:10ratings because I don't think the battle ratings matter too much tier wise you know you could
12:15put something tier 5 and give it a really low battle rating maybe some people would
12:20disagree but that's the only way I could see these self-propelled anti-aircraft vehicles
12:24being competitive as far as I'm aware all the stats are the same as the last vehicle
12:30and the Type 98 in general now the next vehicle like with the Type 95 self-propelled anti-aircraft
12:37vehicle I've only seen one reference to and that was on a Wikipedia article and like I
12:41said I do try to avoid using that but I thought I'd mention it just on the off chance there
12:46is some truth to it but basically apparently there was a variant called the Type 1 Tahar
12:53which was apparently a prototype version with a twin 37mm anti-aircraft gun mounted now
12:59apparently this was a prototype and didn't go into production presumably it would be
13:03similar to the Type 1 Chaihee in general 8x50mm of armour 27mph top speed again I
13:12don't think there's much chance of it being added because there doesn't seem to be much
13:15information on it if it was added probably a battle rating of about 4.7 tier 4 but again
13:23I don't I've put it in just in case it did exist but I you know the lack of information
13:28suggests to me that perhaps it didn't but you know just for completeness I thought it
13:32would be best to at least mention it now for my last vehicle we've got the M42 Duster
13:38as far as I'm aware Japan used some of these so seems fitting for a tier 5 self-propelled
13:43anti-aircraft vehicle not good armour the thickest it gets is 25mm but effective 40mm
13:50with sloping but you know it's going to be penetrated you know it doesn't get much thicker
13:55than 30 effective thickness really or 40 if you count that front bit so not particularly
14:03great armour penetration again is not particularly good 63 seems to be best with the armour piercing
14:12so you know it's not going to be penetrating many enemy vehicles how many crew does it
14:17have it has 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 6 crew where's the top speed max speed of 45 miles an hour
14:26you know it's got a decent weapon finally 40mm Bofors cannons I believe it's a battle
14:34rating of 6.7 so a bit of a jump up but I think this would be a very good tier 5 self-propelled
14:39anti-aircraft vehicle for the Japanese tech tree so that's it for today's episode I think
14:46I've come out with a decent self-propelled anti-aircraft tech tree was a bit worried
14:50how it would turn out when I first started it but yeah I think it's come out decently
14:55well like I say they're going to be quite well they look over tiered but you know down
15:00to because of the battle rating I think they should end up you know being somewhat competitive
15:04they're not going to be as good as other nation's self-propelled anti-aircraft vehicles but
15:08you know I think they should be good enough for the job but anyway I hope you've enjoyed
15:12this episode next episode we'll be dealing with the premium tanks so if you've liked
15:18the video leave a like subscribe if you like these sorts of videos leave feedback can always
15:22do with more feedback and yeah hope you've enjoyed the video thanks for watching I'll
