00:00An anti-graft watchdog says imposing salary caps on heads of federal statutory bodies,
00:08as suggested by Public Accounts Committee chairman Mas Ermiyati Samsuddin, will not
00:13effectively tackle corruption within these organizations.
00:17Pushpan Murugia, CEO of the Center to Combat Corruption and Cronyism, said salary caps
00:23could reduce the value of such positions for self-enrichment and limit political appointments
00:28and financing.
00:29However, he said these positions will remain attractive due to the control over financial
00:35decisions and potential for lobbying for government contracts that can benefit politicians or
00:40their families.
00:42Murugia said more must be done to tackle corruption at its root, such as introducing a political
00:48financing law to transparently regulate the income and expenditure of all political parties.
00:54Meanwhile, anti-graft activist Edmund Terence Gomez said the committee should be more concerned
00:59about allegations of corruption surrounding federal statutory bodies rather than the salaries
01:04paid to CEOs and managing directors.
01:08On August 9, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim called for stricter oversight by the Malaysian
01:12Anti-Corruption Commission and the Auditor General to prevent governance violations and
01:17corruption.
01:18He said the government is also considering expanding audit monitoring mechanisms across
01:23various levels of government.
