00:00A senator cautioned against pigeonholing any group as responsible for corruption, stating
00:08that it is a widespread issue among Malaysians across the board.
00:13Former MCA Vice President Thilian Kerr said corruption had become a Malaysian way of life,
00:19highlighting that many people, from traffic violators to corporate offenders, have resorted
00:25to bribery.
00:26He said the givers and takers of bribes are Malaysians of all ethnicities and faiths,
00:31including licensed traders and legal companies, who dabble in a little corruption to ensure
00:36smooth operations.
00:39By a little corruption, he was referring to protection money paid to enforcement officers,
00:44adding that such cases had been reported before.
00:47His comments follow criticism from Deputy Inspector General of Police Ayub Khan Maiden
00:52Pichai about attempts by certain individuals to racialize corruption.
00:57He said placing blame on certain communities for the widespread corruption did not deal
01:02with the root of the problem, which he said arose from autocracy and the lack of transparency.
