00:00Panang Mufti Suki Othman has advised Muslims to refrain from taking pictures with Christmas
00:06trees and decorations if it could lead to misunderstandings about their religious stance.
00:12He said, while the permissibility of taking photos with Christmas decorations depends
00:16on the intention and context, it is better to exercise caution in such matters.
00:21Suki said Christmas trees and decorations are generally associated with Christian celebrations
00:26and taking pictures with these decorations might be considered haram if it appears to
00:31support or celebrate another religion as it contradicts Islamic beliefs.
00:36However, he added if the picture is intended solely for aesthetic reasons, memories, or
00:41cultural expression without any intention to endorse the religious celebration, it may
00:45be permissible.
00:48As such, Suki said Muslims should maintain a good image and avoid actions that could
00:52lead to misinterpretations or misconceptions.
00:55Yesterday, PAS Youth Vice Chief Hanif Jamaluddin took issue with a Christmas celebration organized
01:01by the Housing and Local Government Ministry as it involved Muslim staff.
01:05However, a source within the ministry clarified that it did not force any of its personnel
01:10to attend the Christmas function and the Christmas carolers who performed at the event were East
01:15Malaysian Christians.
