00:00Zaki Azmi said he resisted the temptation to accept bribes even though he had held a

00:08powerful position as a senior federal counsel in the Home Ministry in the 1970s.

00:15The former Chief Justice of Malaysia said he had learned from his father, Azmi Muhammad,

00:20to become a leader with integrity.

00:23Azmi was Lord President of the Federal Court from 1968 to 1974.

00:29He recalled one instance when his father sent away a man who brought the family food, at

00:33a time when such provisions were scarce.

00:36He later found out that the man was supposed to appear in court before his father the next

00:40day.

00:42Zaki said this lesson of integrity and honesty stayed with him throughout his legal career,

00:47leading him to refuse several favors he was asked to perform as a lawyer and federal court

00:52judge.

00:54In his speech on ethics, governance and leadership, Zaki also praised former Prime Ministers

00:59Hussein Onn and Abdul Razak Hussein, calling them politicians with great integrity.

01:05He pointed out that Hussein used his own funds to attend his child's graduation in England,

01:10while Razak paid for his children's tuition fees out of his own pocket.
