00:00Penang Pakatan Harapan Chairman Chow Korniau believes that discontent with rising costs
00:08and government policies are among the factors behind PH's loss in the Sungai Bakar by-election.
00:15Chow said the outcome of the by-election could have been caused by the coalition's failure
00:20to explain national and state issues effectively to the voters.
00:25The Penang Chief Minister said one of the issues of discontent is the government's
00:29policy on diesel prices, which have been allowed to float since June 10.
00:35Official results showed that PN's Abidin Ismail defeated PH's Johari Arifin with a
00:404,267-vote majority.
00:44Out of 39,279 eligible voters, 24,711 of them cast their ballots for the by-election today.
00:54Chow also said the drop in voter turnout, particularly among the Chinese voters, contributed
00:59to PH's defeat.
01:01He said the Chinese voter turnout was at an estimated 49 per cent, a 13 per cent drop
01:07from last year's state election.
