What Is Your Legacy?

  • last month
“Every person has a legacy. You may not know what your impact is, and it may not be something that you can write on your tombstone, but every person has an impact on this world.” What is it that you are doing for this world? How are you contributing to making the lives of others and your own better? What are you leaving behind? What is your legacy?

00:30Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, There is no god but Allah
01:00Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, There is no god but Allah
01:30Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, There is no god but Allah
02:00Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, There is no god but Allah
02:31And brother Naeem is like a brother to me, mashallah
02:36You know he's someone that I've known for a while, we don't see each other as often as I wish we could
02:41But whenever we do, it's like we've never split, alhamdulillah, and he just killed it
02:45He had me in tears with the poem about his mom
02:49Because I think that that's pretty much how it feels, subhanallah
02:53I've been asked here tonight to talk a little bit to you about something that's very important
02:58And I think that one of the things that we have to admit before we talk about what I'm going to talk about tonight
03:05Is that there's a lot about us that we don't know
03:08Meaning that we are the closest to who we are in terms of this worldly life
03:14Like I think I know a lot about me, I think I can be honest
03:17I think that I can be authentic and I can tell you the secrets about myself and what I think and what I really feel
03:25But in reality we have taken on so much
03:29And we have been a part of so much of that which surrounds us
03:32That we don't even realize sometimes that the environment has shaped who we are
03:37And one of the things that has shaped who we are
03:40Is this belief that I feel like
03:43Because a lot of people here are college students, and young professionals, and high schoolers
03:48And if you're not in those three categories then you are at heart, mashallah
03:51Age is just a number, don't worry about it
03:53You're young hearted, mashallah
03:55One of the things that I feel like is going to be the crisis of our era
04:00Is that we have been sold this idea
04:05That our actions don't matter
04:09That we have been told, don't vote, it won't matter
04:15We've been told, go ahead and do it, it's only one time
04:19We've been told, it's just an accident
04:23It was just a mistake, I didn't mean it
04:26All these statements reflect this idea that when I do something
04:30It doesn't live beyond that moment
04:33And this is something that stands diametrically opposed to the example of the Prophet Muhammad
04:41We know, we're told, we're taught, we've been nurtured and mentored to understand something
04:47That everything that we do on this earth, it lives on
04:54The goodness of your good deeds, they carry forward
04:58And the difficulty of sometimes our mistakes, if we don't regret and repent for them
05:04If we carry them with arrogance, or neglect, or hubris
05:08Then those sins can sometimes weigh us down
05:12And this is something that we have to believe
05:15If we're going to believe that we are people who make legacy
05:18Because the person who makes legacy, in their heart of hearts, is a sincere person
05:24And they believe that the future is going to be dependent upon the work that they are doing today
05:30You know, Sister Amal, you went to Hajj this year
05:33Hajj, it's amazing that you said that
05:36Because I was thinking about this theme tonight
05:39Hajj is something that is an example of what legacy looks like
05:44Hajj is an example of what happens when somebody does something for the right reasons
05:50You know, we've all done something for the right reasons
05:52Have any of you ever done something, a good deed, that was so pure that you even surprised yourself?
05:58Like, you're like, I didn't know I had this good in me
06:01I just gave the last samosa away? Like, what?
06:04Like, I just gave, you know, some people, subhanAllah
06:07You'll be sitting at a gathering and there's only one donut left
06:10And before your nafs even has the time to convince you that that's your donut
06:16You hand it to somebody else
06:18Like suhoor in Ramadan
06:20Like, everyone's hungry, everyone's rushing against the clock to eat, right?
06:24And then instead of getting your plate, you hop behind the table and start handing it out to other people
06:29And then as you're doing it, you're like, who am I? What have I become?
06:32Is this what happens when shaitan leaves me alone for a month?
06:35I can do this?
06:37Those are the moments where you show yourself what legacy looks like
06:41Because you weren't thinking about anything else besides Allah when you did that
06:45And when you look at the example of hajj, the story of hajj
06:48There's one story from this year that just shook me so much
06:53But hajj is like the least glamorous thing that you can do in your life
06:58It is so not Instagram friendly in that way
07:02Like, your Instagram aesthetic will be destroyed if you post everything about hajj
07:07You're like, check out this water bottle, I made wudu from it today
07:10And then after making wudu, I took it to the bathroom with me, don't ask, right?
07:14You're like, check out this little box of chicken they gave us
07:17I'm not sure if it's good anymore, but I'm hungry, so bismillah, here we go, right?
07:21Like, if you don't hear from me, send out a church party
07:24There's all these different things that if you took pictures of them
07:27They are the most raw, like, just real pictures
07:32You know, people who are sleeping on the side of the road
07:35People who don't have a tent in Mina
07:37People who don't eat, they're eating scraps of what you're eating
07:40So as you're throwing away, and there's a little bit of rice and a little bit
07:43There's people who are waiting at the garbage cans because they don't have money
07:46And they don't have food, and they ask, are you done?
07:49And you, with humility and shame, say yes
07:51Because there's still some food left in there
07:53And they take it from you like they just won the lottery
07:55Hajj is so real, dude
07:57And that's why the people who went on Hajj
08:00Al-Hajj Malik Shabazz, Alhamdulillah
08:02That's why it, like, transforms people
08:05Because you go there, and for a second, you're able to unplug from all of this
08:09For a couple of weeks, you're able to disconnect from all of the façade
08:12And all of the, you need more, more, more, iPhone X, iPhone Max
08:16You're able to just disconnect for a second
08:18And you go and you see life for what it is
08:22So, I went on Hajj, I've been on Hajj, Alhamdulillah, now for a few times
08:25And we take a group
08:27This year, we took 250 people
08:29How did I get out alive?
08:31God
08:32God is real
08:34I know that for a fact
08:36250 people
08:38And, during that experience
08:41You meet a lot of people from a lot of different walks of life
08:43And one of the most beautiful things about Hajj
08:45One of the most beautiful things about Umrah or Hajj
08:47Is that everyone dresses the same
08:49And one of the ways in which we tell each other apart
08:52Like, one of the ways in which we measure one another
08:54Sort of subconsciously before we even realize that we're being judgmental
08:57Is we look at what we're wearing
08:59So, I walk into a masjid like this
09:01And people automatically assume that I'm what?
09:05Turkish, very good
09:06No, what do they assume?
09:08They assume that I'm some sort of, like, religious figure
09:10Why? Because I'm wearing this, my beard is this
09:12And I'm wearing this long jacket, right?
09:14And they look maybe at, you know
09:17Somebody else who doesn't look like this
09:19And they assume
09:20So, we make all these really interesting assumptions
09:22About people by what they're wearing
09:24But Hajj completely destroys that chance
09:26Because for those few days
09:28Everyone's wearing the same thing
09:30Everyone's wearing, the men are wearing two white towels
09:32The women are generally just wearing, you know
09:34Some sort of abaya or shawarkamis
09:36And that's it
09:37And you cannot tell
09:39You absolutely cannot tell
09:41A person's economic status
09:43Or their career
09:45Or anything about them, really
09:47Beyond what they tell you
09:50And you know what's crazy about Hajj?
09:52No one talks about where they're working
09:53Because no one wants to talk about work
09:54Because they're tired of work
09:56So, you get together
09:57And everyone's together
09:58And we all just sort of forget about money
10:00For a few days
10:01We forget about judging one another
10:03What kind of car do you drive?
10:04I mean, no one brings, like
10:05You know, there's that one jerk
10:06Who brings, like, his Tesla key
10:07It's like, why did you bring that?
10:08You didn't drive here
10:09Like, you could have just left
10:11He's like, it's a toy
10:13It's actually a key, but it's a car
10:14It's like, okay, no one cares, right?
10:15No, no, just joking
10:16No one does that
10:17So, we're sitting in Minna
10:19And for those of you who want to know about Minna
10:21Minna is basically, you live in a tent
10:23For three days, three or four days
10:25And it's not very luxurious
10:27Relative to what we're used to
10:28So, we start in Mecca
10:29We're at the Fairmont
10:30You're in that giant clock, okay?
10:32And then, you know, you live in that experience
10:34The bathrooms that are nicer than your bedrooms
10:36Here in America
10:37Yadda yadda
10:38It's, you know, breakfast buffet for days
10:40It's really, you know, absurd actually
10:41In some ways
10:42And then you go to Minna
10:43And everyone's bubbles popped
10:44And we're all sleeping in not even
10:46What's half of a twin bed?
10:48Because that's what you sleep on, right?
10:50If you've been on Hyde, you start laughing
10:51Like, you know, we know like
10:52Half of a queen bed might be like a full
10:54Or like a regular
10:55And then half of a full is a twin
10:57What's half of a twin?
10:58I have no idea
10:59But you're basically sleeping on
11:00What a lot of us imagine
11:02Like to be like the sidewalk
11:03Like a very thin piece of land
11:05And you're sleeping across
11:06And next to and everybody
11:07I played footsie with many people
11:08Don't tell my wife, right?
11:09There were men, don't worry
11:12And so just a lot of touching happening
11:15And you just kind of wake up
11:16And you just hope for the best, right?
11:18And it's not comfortable
11:20It's not comfortable for your body
11:23You know, I'm a very tall person
11:25And so for me it's very uncomfortable
11:28I have back issues
11:29I have knee issues
11:30I'm just like a
11:31I'm falling apart
11:32I'm 30 as well, Fraz
11:33So I'm just falling apart now, right?
11:34My wife's like, you're not that old
11:35I'm like, no, I enjoy gardening
11:36And when chicken goes on sale
11:37I get excited
11:38I'm very old, right?
11:41So you would wake up
11:42Sore, tired, exhausted
11:45But subhanAllah
11:46There was something about your soul
11:48That was just rejuvenated
11:50There was something about your heart
11:51That just felt right
11:53And on the last day of Mina
11:56You know, on the first day of Mina
11:57Everyone starts complaining
11:58Because we're still coming from
11:59Like the dunya immersion
12:00We're in the Fairmont
12:01We're in the Hyatt
12:02We're in here
12:03So you're still like
12:04You have this residue, right?
12:05Remember what I told you?
12:06Things affect you
12:07So even though we're in Mecca
12:08We're still kind of in this
12:09Very luxurious hotel
12:10So the first day in the camp
12:11We're like, what is this?
12:13I have to share a bathroom
12:14With how many people?
12:15There's a line of like 47 people
12:18You have to get food out of a table
12:20And you have to eat it quickly
12:21Otherwise it'll go bad
12:22Because the heat is just so
12:23And everyone's complaining
12:24But by the third day
12:25Or the fourth day of that day
12:26Or that camp in Mina
12:29I kid you not
12:30Wallahi, everyone is crying
12:33When we have to leave
12:35I was sitting there
12:36We're doing our departure speeches
12:38With our tent
12:39And we had 150 people in a tent
12:41And everyone's crying
12:42They're silent
12:43Just bawling their eyes out
12:45Because we have to depart
12:47And my friend Sheikh Hasib
12:49He says on the microphone
12:51He's crying, we're all crying
12:52He says, you're sad, right?
12:56Like you never thought
12:57You'd want to leave this tent
12:58You never thought you'd want to
12:59Stay in this tent, did you?
13:00You never thought
13:02That you would actually want to be here
13:05And he goes, but you know why
13:07You want to be here?
13:09Because in this tent
13:11In this environment
13:13Wearing what you're wearing
13:14Dusty, disheveled, sweaty, tired
13:18You realize that nothing from this world
13:20Will give you the happiness in your heart
13:22That you've been looking for
13:24Because while you're in this state
13:26You've achieved this closeness to Allah
13:28That you've been looking for forever
13:31One brother, the Tesla guy
13:34He came to me and said
13:36With tears in his eyes afterwards
13:37He goes, you know
13:38I'm not telling you this to brag
13:40But I have a lot of money
13:43He just said that
13:44He goes, I have a lot of money
13:46I looked at him and he goes
13:48I have like a lot of money
13:49I go, yes, go ahead
13:51And he literally says to me
13:54And I don't know if that has ever
13:56Come close to what I've felt here
13:57These past three days
13:59He told me literally
14:00I don't have to think when I buy something
14:02He goes, there will be times
14:03Where I'm at the mall
14:04And I just pull out wads of cash
14:05And I'm like, where did this come from?
14:07And I asked if we could be friends
14:10I mean, just, you know
14:13I'm a friendly guy
14:14I like to be friends with people, right?
14:16Once you do Hajj with somebody
14:17Like you know them, no
14:18I asked him to explain
14:20He goes, nothing that I've ever purchased
14:22Or ever consumed
14:24Or ever acquired or curated
14:25Nothing has ever given me
14:26This sense of satisfaction
14:28And he goes, is it weird for me
14:30To think that I just want to move here
14:31And live here for the rest of my life
14:32I go, no, we all think that
14:33When we're here
14:34But we realize that we have to go back
14:36You know what this is?
14:38Y'all
14:39Sorry I said y'all
14:40I moved to the south
14:41I'm from Chicago
14:42When you move to the south
14:43Y'all is like a
14:44It's like a condition that you inherit, right?
14:46You know what this is?
14:48This is what happens
14:50When you taste someone's legacy
14:52The sincerity of someone's legacy
14:55You know, there's certain places
14:57That when you walk into them
14:58You can feel the power
14:59Of the person's intention
15:00There are certain buildings
15:02That you walk into them
15:03Certain memorials
15:04Certain monuments
15:05Where you actually
15:06Your heart starts to shake a little bit
15:08Certain masajids
15:09Certain historical places
15:12That you walk into them
15:13And you're like
15:14This is powerful
15:16What's more powerful than a person
15:17Giving his entire life for the sake of Allah?
15:20His family
15:21His wife
15:22His child
15:23Ibrahim A.S
15:24Our great father
15:25The father of the prophets
15:27Doing everything in his life
15:29Literally just for the pleasure of Allah
15:31That's why millions of people
15:33Go to Hajj every year
15:34And they all come back changed
15:37Because of the sincerity
15:38Of one person's actions
15:40Two people's actions
15:41One family's action
15:42Him, his wife, and his son
15:44So when we talk about leaving a legacy
15:46The first thing we have to understand
15:48Is that the legacy that we hope to leave
15:51We ourselves may never ever experience
15:54The pleasure of that legacy
15:56You know, one of my teachers used to say that
15:58Sincerity
15:59When a person has ikhlas
16:01When a person does things for the right reasons
16:03It's when they're planting a tree
16:05That they themselves will never sit under the shade of
16:08You'll never eat the fruit from it
16:10You're planting it because you know
16:12That it's the right thing to do
16:13And that it will make Allah happy with you
16:15And that future generations down the line
16:17They will be the ones who will sit under the shade of the tree
16:20And they will think to themselves
16:22And thank Allah for the person
16:24Who took the time out in sincerity
16:25To do what they are benefiting from
16:27So one of the questions we have to ask ourselves
16:30Is have I ever done anything with that level of sincerity before?
16:34Or does it need to be shared on my social media?
16:36Do I need to experience it?
16:38You know, I used to share a lot on social media
16:40I used to share when I was like reading
16:42Preparing for a khutbah or a lecture
16:44I would like take a picture of the book
16:46And like my cup of coffee
16:47And I would like place everything properly
16:49And then I would write like
16:50Wow, khutbah prep, look at me
16:52You know, like mashallah
16:54And one of my teachers, Sheikh Hassan from Knoxville
16:56He actually told me
16:57He's like, what are you doing?
16:59He's like, you're literally taking your sincerity
17:01And you're throwing it in the garbage can
17:03Do you ever do anything without sharing it?
17:06Do you ever do something
17:08And you actually, as Omar said radiallahu anhu
17:10You work hard to hide your good deeds
17:13Like you do with your sins?
17:15Like I don't want people to know
17:17You know, there's a famous story of Abu Bakr radiallahu anhu
17:20Where he, when he was the khalifa
17:22He used to actually leave the masjid on certain days
17:25Very quickly after Fajr
17:26He would just leave, like dip, like very quickly
17:28So you know, obviously after Salah
17:30What does everybody do?
17:31Everyone sits, checks their phone
17:33No, not back then, right?
17:34Everybody sits, they make their adhkar
17:36They kind of, you know, make their du'a
17:38They wait, especially after Fajr
17:39They'd wait till Ishraq
17:40And they'd pray their duha
17:42So Abu Bakr radiallahu anhu
17:43He used to just like dip
17:45He used to just like run
17:47So one day Omar thought it was very strange
17:49And Omar said, I wonder what he's doing
17:51So he actually kind of like followed him
17:53And he tried to like hide
17:54And like trace him a little bit
17:56And so he one day followed him
17:58And he noticed that Abu Bakr
17:59Was going to the outskirt of a town
18:01Of the city of Medina
18:03Qariya on the outside
18:04And he basically saw him enter this person's house
18:08And he said, what's this person doing?
18:10What's Abu Bakr doing?
18:11I didn't know he had like a vacation home
18:12On the outside of Medina and Quba
18:14So he went and he waited
18:16And it was like a long time
18:17The narration says it was like a long time
18:19And then Abu Bakr goes out
18:21And he leaves and he heads back towards Medina
18:22So Omar being the person who's very curious
18:25About what's going on
18:27He went to the door and he knocked on it
18:29And a person, a little old woman
18:33Opened the door
18:35And he noticed immediately when he looked at her
18:37That she was blind
18:39She was someone who couldn't see
18:40And she said, yes
18:42And he said, Ya Ummi, my mother
18:45Which is a term of respect
18:47For any elderly woman
18:49Says, Ya Ummi, my mother
18:51And I ask you, do you know what's happening in your house?
18:54Like, do you know what's going on?
18:56And she said, ya
18:59And he said, well what's happening in your house?
19:01What just happened in your house?
19:02And she said, there's a person who comes from the city
19:04Once in a while and he helps me with all the chores that I have
19:07All the things that I need to do
19:09And Omar Khattab said, a person?
19:11She said, ya, a person
19:13And he said, do you know that person's name?
19:16She said, no, he won't tell me
19:20And when he heard this
19:25He started to cry
19:27He said, you're making it very difficult for us, Abu Bakr
19:31We can't keep up with you
19:33You're so good
19:35How on earth are we going to compete with you?
19:38Like you're going to be in Jannah first place
19:40And we're going to be like
19:42How?
19:44Because Abu Bakr was not concerned about people
19:47Praising or thanking or looking up to him
19:51He was not concerned about those things
19:53He was concerned about answering this question
19:56Can I be sincere for Allah without anybody knowing?
19:59Can I hide this good deed?
20:01Am I worried about this deed living beyond me?
20:04Because sincerity is what gives deeds life
20:07And so the first thing that you have to ask yourself tonight
20:10And this is going to be very difficult because this is not a group activity
20:12We're very used to group activities
20:14A lot of us, maybe even in school, hated them
20:17But individually tonight, before you go to sleep
20:19I want you to look at your phone
20:21I want you to look at your pad of paper with a pen
20:23And I want you to write down the things you did today for Allah
20:26That weren't for anybody else
20:28Did you give sadaqa to somebody?
20:30Did you smile at somebody?
20:32Did you pay for the person's coffee behind you at Starbucks
20:34And then make tawba for going to Starbucks?
20:36I own a coffee shop in Dallas
20:39Everyone's like, it's like Starbucks
20:41I'm like, leave, get out, you're not allowed here anymore
20:43Did you do something?
20:45Did you pay it forward?
20:47Did you call your mother and tell her that you love her?
20:50And not tweet Happy Mother's Day to your mom who's not on Twitter?
20:54Are these the kinds of things that we do?
20:57And we talk about these things, subhanAllah, very openly
21:00But how many of us kept them secret?
21:02Between us and Allah?
21:04And again, the motivation about why you want to keep them secret
21:07Is so that it lives beyond you
21:09It carries forward
21:11And you will eventually benefit from it
21:13Because of your sincerity
21:15So on this trip of Hajj
21:17This person comes to me and says this to me
21:19And I tell him that, yeah, this is the result of a person
21:21When you are able to break away from all these things that distract us
21:24You're able to taste what Allah wants us to taste
21:26And Ibn Atta'illah, he actually says this beautifully in a poem
21:29He says,
21:30كيف يرحلوا إلى الله
21:32He says, how can a person make their journey to God
21:34On the straight path
21:35How can they make their journey to God?
21:37وهو مقبل بشهواته
21:39They're shackled by their desires
21:41So the next step that we have to understand when it comes to legacy
21:45Is that just like our good deeds live beyond us
21:48Our bad deeds also can become attached to us
21:51I have a scar on my hand
21:53You guys can't see it, it's really small
21:55But like Brother Faraz, I'm a wuss
21:57So it still reminds me of the pain
21:58You know where I got this scar from?
22:00I got this scar in Egypt
22:02Sorry for all my Egyptians here
22:04Climbing out of a swimming pool
22:06Because they thought that having sharp edges was a good idea
22:09So when I was climbing out of a swimming pool
22:11I remember I was lifting myself out of the pool
22:14And I was just meshing a lot when I was young
22:17Just like a 10-year-old jacked kid like David Hasselhoff
22:19No, I'm joking, I was really fat
22:20And so I was almost like a whale kind of getting out
22:24And so as I pushed myself out
22:27The edge cut my hand
22:29And you know when water mixes with blood
22:31It dilutes really quickly
22:32So it looked like I got stabbed and shot at the same time
22:35And there was just blood dripping all down my arm
22:37And someone looked at me like, oh my god
22:39And I was like, ahh
22:40And they thought it was like a murder scene
22:42So I'm climbing out
22:44And my hand was cut pretty bad
22:46And you know what?
22:47SubhanAllah, for like a week or two
22:48I couldn't even do this
22:49I couldn't do anything
22:50I couldn't move it because the wound would keep reopening
22:52And Alhamdulillah, that was like 20 years ago
22:56Now if I touch it, if I scratch it, if I do anything
22:59I can't feel it anymore
23:00The pain is gone
23:01But you know what's crazy?
23:02When I look at it, I can feel the pain
23:06Like when I look at the scar
23:08Not when I touch it
23:09When I look at it
23:10When I remember the moment
23:11I can feel it
23:13The brain is a crazy thing
23:15You can remember the emotions and the sensations
23:17It's almost like
23:18Do you guys remember the best meal you've ever had?
23:20Think of the best meal you've ever had
23:23The best bite of food you've ever eaten in your life
23:25If you think hard enough
23:26You can actually begin to what?
23:28You can actually begin to kind of taste it
23:31The mind and the way your senses work are incredible
23:34What happens with sin, unfortunately
23:36Is that when we get sold
23:38When shaitan or our nafs sells us into doing this sin
23:41We tell ourselves
23:43That we'll just ask for repentance afterwards
23:45And you know what?
23:46Allah is so forgiving
23:47It's amazing
23:48He's even more forgiving than we are to ourselves
23:50Like we ask Allah to forgive us
23:51And he forgives us
23:52But sometimes we don't forgive ourselves
23:54And the way that that works
23:55Is that we live with the residue of this sin on us
24:00And that legacy is left within us
24:03So some of us are hoping to become change makers in society
24:06But we can't even be change makers in ourselves
24:09We're hoping to like revolt
24:11Against the systemic oppressive systems
24:14That are holding us down
24:15But we can't revolt out of bed for Fajr
24:17And there's like a deep problem there
24:20Right?
24:21And so when it comes to understanding legacy
24:23The first part is what?
24:24Ibrahim's legacy of doing khair
24:26The second legacy is what?
24:28Conquering yourself
24:29And making sure that you're not a slave
24:31As Ibn Ata'illah said
24:32وَهُو مُكَبَّلٌ بِشَهَوَاتِ
24:34Like they're wearing shackles
24:36And they look at the shackles
24:37It's desire
24:38It's just desire that's captured them
24:40Right?
24:41And the last part that I'll share
24:43Is when a person understands
24:45All of these pieces that come together
24:47They understand their route
24:49That has been given to them
24:50Is the route of the Prophet ﷺ
24:52The legacy that we follow
24:54The path that we have to move along
24:57It's not our responsibility to carve it
24:59And that's a huge blessing
25:00That's a huge blessing
25:01Allah actually says in Surah Hajarat
25:03If this entire world was left up to you
25:06And you had to decide the path
25:07The straight path versus not straight path
25:09He said you would hate it
25:10You would absolutely hate it
25:12He said that's why Allah has sent
25:14The Prophet ﷺ to be amongst you
25:17So that you have a role model
25:19Somebody that can teach you right from wrong
25:21Someone that can tell you that
25:23This is the legacy that you have to follow and build
25:26And I want everyone to understand something
25:29Are you guys tired of Islamophobia?
25:32Anyone?
25:33No, you're cool with it?
25:34We can keep it going for a while?
25:35No? Okay
25:36You guys are like
25:37The other day I was in Trader Joe's
25:39I was laughing during it
25:40It was spot on
25:42Spot on Trader Joe's
25:43I was in Trader Joe's with my wife
25:44And someone said to my wife
25:46Like this is Dallas, Texas
25:47We're in South Lake
25:48Which is like make America great again country
25:50We wear kufis, they wear the MAGA hats
25:52And I was there
25:53And one guy just looks at my wife
25:54And says like go back to Islam
25:56Right?
25:57And I'm not joking
25:59And sometimes like
26:01Sometimes like
26:02You're just so tired
26:04Like you have a 20 month old
26:05And you're just like
26:06I don't even want to acknowledge this that happened
26:09And you know my wife is really funny
26:11So she was like
26:12Oh it's a really good reminder
26:13I should return back to my faith
26:14And like you know
26:15She has a good sense of humor
26:16So she's able to like just roll with it
26:18And I was like
26:19I was like really quickly
26:21Gonna become like the macho husband man
26:22Who like destroys
26:23I don't think he thought we were married
26:24Because she's Bengali and I'm white
26:25So I think
26:26He was like
26:27Yeah this white guy's gonna join me
26:28Right?
26:29And like start telling
26:30And I was like
26:31Who are you talking to dude?
26:32And he was like
26:33Oh
26:34And I was like yeah
26:35But it's actually remarkable
26:36Subhanallah
26:37I forgot where I was going with that story
26:38But oh yeah
26:39So
26:40So the
26:41Where was I going with that story?
26:43Oh
26:44So subhanallah
26:45It's actually really remarkable
26:46That when you live in a society
26:47And you have to conquer these things
26:49Like Islamophobia
26:50Sometimes you try to develop a road map on your own
26:53And it becomes tiring
26:55Anyone political activism here?
26:57Anyone like socially active?
26:58Anyone consider themselves
26:59Like a social justice activist here?
27:01You should
27:02We should all be kind of
27:03Raising our hands a little bit
27:04You know what?
27:05It gets kind of tiring
27:06When you're trying to come up
27:07With a road map by yourself
27:08But when you know enough
27:09About your prophet
27:10Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam
27:11And you know how he handled situations
27:14You can conquer people's hearts
27:16And their minds are irrelevant
27:19You know the reason
27:20Why we keep losing some battles?
27:21My dad's sister
27:23Is literally
27:25She holds fundraisers
27:27For Paul Ryan in her house
27:29My dad's sister
27:31Is like a GOP
27:33Sahabiya
27:34Right?
27:35She's like
27:36She's basically a companion
27:37Of Donald Trump
27:38Okay?
27:39I wish I was joking
27:40I really wish I was
27:42And it's interesting
27:44Because subhanallah
27:45When we had this dialogue
27:47Over the past few years
27:48Politically
27:49It always
27:50Was never a logical thing
27:52And I realized very quickly
27:54That even though
27:55She has these thoughts
27:56About Muslims
27:57When she came over to my house
27:59And my mom would cook for her
28:01And my mom mashallah
28:02Is a good cook
28:03You can tell by my size
28:04She's a very good cook
28:06That my aunt
28:08Who was very much like
28:09Muslim man
28:10Except this one
28:11Because she's an amazing cook
28:13And my mom would go
28:15Above and beyond serving
28:17You know?
28:18It's her husband's sister
28:19So she was like
28:20Cutting the roast
28:21My mom makes
28:23Ridiculous spreads
28:24Like multiple animals
28:25Were hurt
28:26In the production of this meal
28:28And so she like
28:29Will cut the roast
28:30And like cut off
28:31Like the chicken leg
28:32And this
28:33And like
28:34You know this
28:35And all that kind of stuff
28:36And my aunt
28:38Who so deeply logically
28:39Hates Muslims and Islam
28:41Could not help
28:42But have an emotional love
28:44For this faith
28:45Because of what it did
28:47The hospitality
28:48The warmth
28:49The compassion
28:50You cannot deny those
28:51You cannot
28:53You know even Abu Sufyan
28:55When the Quraish
28:56Were making fun of him
28:57This was before he was Muslim
28:58They were making fun of him
28:59Because the Prophet
29:00Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam
29:01Was going to marry him
29:02To his family
29:03He said I know
29:04And this is as they were
29:05Planning his murder
29:06The Quraish
29:07Abu Sufyan
29:08Who was a part of that crew
29:09Said I don't know
29:10Anyone better to marry
29:11Than Muhammad
29:13This is before he was a believer
29:15Our goal
29:17And our legacy
29:18In this country
29:19Is going to be winning
29:20The hearts of people
29:22Winning their hearts
29:23Serving them
29:25Making sure that they know
29:26That if I need help
29:27What did Khadija describe
29:28The Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam as
29:29What did she say
29:30She said what
29:32تحمل القلب
29:34You carry everybody's issues
29:36Right
29:37You remember people
29:38You take care of everybody
29:40وتكسب المعدوم
29:42You're somebody who literally
29:43Takes account for those people
29:44Who have become invisible to society
29:46So when we talk about legacy
29:48Realize that your Prophet
29:50Has given you something
29:51You've inherited this legacy
29:53You're not responsible
29:54For putting it together on your own
29:55You have to make sure
29:56That you follow this example
29:58You do good sincerely
30:00You wipe yourself away
30:01From all the mistakes
30:02That you make
30:03Sincerely repent to Allah
30:04And last but not least
30:05As you look up to your role model
30:06Your messenger
30:07Our mothers are the believers
30:09His companions
30:10And you understand
30:11That they've laid this path out for you
30:13Are you going to be courageous enough
30:14To follow it
30:16Are you going to have the courage
30:17To go against your desires
30:18And follow what the Prophet
30:19Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam
30:20Asked of us
30:21Are you going to have the courage
30:22That when somebody says
30:23A horrible word to you
30:25You give them beautiful words back
30:27When someone looks at you
30:28With a frown
30:29You look back at them
30:30With a smile
30:31There was a student
30:32At Qalam today
30:33He said that
30:34Yesterday was Jummah
30:35He was driving
30:36He was wearing a thawb
30:37And somebody
30:38Looked at him
30:39And from the other car
30:40And gave him the middle finger
30:42Right
30:43And they weren't saying like
30:44لا إله إلا الله
30:45Like Tawheed
30:46But middle finger
30:47And he said that
30:49He said that
30:50You know for a moment
30:51I was like negotiating
30:52Like what should I do
30:53You know Muslims have Izzah
30:54We should get up and fight
30:55Right
30:56He was going to take his thawb off
30:57And fight
30:58And he said
30:59And I realized
31:00That that was coming from my nafs
31:02And so I looked back at him
31:04And I just told him
31:05I love you
31:07My brother
31:09And the guy just looked at him like
31:11How?
31:13You've defeated me
31:14Right
31:16And he said
31:17The guy actually cracked
31:18A little bit of a smile
31:19And then caught himself
31:20And drove away
31:22People have goodness
31:24This legacy of being peacemakers
31:26And winners of hearts
31:28It's given to us by our messenger
31:29The Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam
31:30Taught us perfectly
31:31How to deal with these situations
31:33Doesn't mean that we don't have honor
31:35Doesn't mean that we don't have strength
31:37But what it means is that
31:38Our strength sometimes comes
31:39In our compassion
31:41In our ability to conquer
31:42Ourselves and our anger
31:43We ask Allah SWT
31:44To grant us the ability
31:45To carry this legacy
31:46We ask Allah SWT
31:47To give us the ability
31:48To be the person
31:49That we look up to
31:51And not to be somebody
31:52Who is selfish and insincere
31:53But someone who thinks
31:54Beyond themselves
31:55We ask Allah SWT
31:56To give us the ability
31:57To have the character
31:58Of the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam
31:59And we ask Allah
32:00To never make people
32:01Pushed away from Islam
32:02Because of us
32:03My biggest fear
32:04You know
32:05People accept Islam
32:06Converts
32:07What happens when
32:08Someone converts to Islam
32:09My dad told me
32:10My dad accepted Islam
32:11He was a convert
32:12A long time ago
32:13When you convert to Islam
32:14And you're basically
32:15Stuck after Jummah
32:16Till Asr with hugs
32:17You know
32:18Like everyone just hugs you
32:19And it's a sign of
32:20Love in the community
32:21Like you convert to Islam
32:22And you're gonna get hugged
32:23For six hours
32:24Right
32:25And one of my teachers
32:26Beautifully said
32:27Something very powerful
32:28He said
32:29You know
32:30We get very excited
32:31When someone comes to Islam
32:32And we should
32:33We should
32:34It's a big deal
32:35It's a big deal
32:36When someone accepts Islam
32:37And he said
32:38The hugs are beautiful
32:39He said
32:40But how many people
32:41On the way home
32:42Or how many people
32:43On the way to the masjid
32:44That day
32:45Do we cut off
32:46And push away
32:47From Islam
32:48Because of our character
32:49And character
32:50Does not require
32:51A lot of knowledge
32:52It does not require
32:53A lot of
32:54It doesn't require
32:55A lot of study
32:56It just requires
32:57Following the example
32:58Of someone who is
32:59Perfect with it
33:00That's it
33:01We ask Allah
33:02To grant us that
33:03Inshallah
33:04Thank you everybody
33:05I appreciate all of you
33:06For accepting me
33:07With my deficiency
33:08Make sure that you
33:09Understand
33:10There's a lot of things
33:11That we can learn
33:12And we can learn
33:13And we can learn
33:14And we can learn
33:15And we can learn
33:16And we can learn
33:17And we can learn
33:18And we can learn
33:19And we can learn
33:20And we can learn
33:21And we can learn
33:22And we can learn
33:23And we can learn
33:24And we can learn
33:25And we can learn
33:26And we can learn
33:27And we can learn
33:28And we can learn
33:29And we can learn
33:30And we can learn
33:31And we can learn
33:32And we can learn
33:33And we can learn
33:34And we can learn
33:35And we can learn
33:36And we can learn
33:37And we can learn
33:38And we can learn
33:39And we can learn
33:40And we can learn
33:41And we can learn
33:42And we can learn
33:43And we can learn
33:44And we can learn
33:45And we can learn
33:46And we can learn
33:47And we can learn
33:48And we can learn
33:49And we can learn
33:50And we can learn
33:51And we can learn
33:52And we can learn
33:53And we can learn
33:54And we can learn
33:55And we can learn
33:56And we can learn
33:57And we can learn
33:58And we can learn
33:59And we can learn
34:00And we can learn
34:01And we can learn
34:02And we can learn
34:03And we can learn
34:04And we can learn
34:05And we can learn
34:06And we can learn
34:07And we can learn
34:08And we can learn
34:09And we can learn
34:10And we can learn
34:11And we can learn
34:12And we can learn
