00:00Hey, Psych2Goers, welcome back to another video.
00:03Have you ever wondered if you're doing things
00:04that are bad for your mental health?
00:06From day to night, you do things
00:08that affect your mental wellbeing for better or for worse.
00:11Oftentimes, you may not even notice
00:13that the things you do are harmful to your mental health.
00:16Before we begin, this video is for educational purposes only
00:19and is not a substitute for professional guidance,
00:21advice, treatment, or diagnosis.
00:24With that said, let's look at eight things
00:26that could be destroying your mental health.
00:29Number one, you're a perfectionist.
00:31Are you someone who constantly seeks perfection?
00:34Constantly worrying about failing to reach your expectations
00:37can leave you in a spiral of depressive, anxious,
00:39and guilt-ridden thoughts.
00:41The truth is, not even the best of us
00:43can achieve perfection.
00:45The higher your perfectionism is,
00:47the more likely it is that you'll suffer
00:48from more psychological disorders.
00:50To help reframe your mindset,
00:52start by being receptive to feedback
00:54and try not to compare yourself to other people.
00:57Number two, you're addicted to your phone.
01:00When you wake up in the morning,
01:01is checking your phone the first thing on your mind?
01:04We all love how technology allows us to reach information
01:07and entertainment in just a matter of seconds,
01:09but an over-dependence on technology
01:11comes with its own set of issues as well.
01:14Research shows that using your smartphone too much
01:16can lead to depression, anxiety, and stress.
01:19To alleviate your phone temptation,
01:21try to set up some chunks of time away from your phone.
01:24This can be hard at first, but as time passes,
01:27you'll be less prone to needing your phone
01:28once boredom strikes you.
01:30Number three, you're missing sleep.
01:33Do you constantly miss out on sleep every day of the week?
01:36Getting a solid eight hours
01:37is essential to your mental health.
01:39Sleep deprivation not only worsens your physical health,
01:42but also can cause fatigue, irritability,
01:44and difficulty focusing.
01:46Sleep may sound like a boring thing to do,
01:48but your body absolutely needs a proper sleep routine
01:51to be in its best shape.
01:53Number four, you stay in toxic relationships.
01:57Are you hopeful that your relationship with your partner,
01:59friends, or family members will change
02:01even though it hasn't in the past?
02:03Staying in toxic relationships
02:04can have a devastating effect on your mental health.
02:08You're dismissing your own wellbeing and mental health
02:10in favor of another person,
02:11and this habit tends to be heavily one-sided.
02:14Sabotage, gaslighting, and abuse
02:16are some of the effects of staying in a toxic relationship.
02:20Find the red flags, reach out for support,
02:22and give yourself time to process this traumatic event.
02:25Healthy forms of love still exist in the world,
02:28and you are absolutely deserving of it.
02:30Number five, you don't ask for help.
02:33Do you bottle up your feelings
02:34when you're going through something?
02:36Do you hate working on a team,
02:37thinking you can do better than everyone else?
02:40The feeling of not asking for help
02:42is like drowning in a pool
02:43while people are just standing by the edges.
02:46The journey towards a fulfilling and mentally healthy life
02:49comes from both an individual journey
02:50and a shared experience.
02:53If you're struggling alone,
02:54opening up might seem terrifying
02:57or like you're burdening someone,
02:58or even impossible if the cause of your problem
03:01is from the people close to you.
03:03If that's the case,
03:04contact an outsider like a mental health professional.
03:07Number six, you compare yourself to others.
03:10Do you look through social media
03:11and constantly compare yourself to other people,
03:13or do you compare your achievements
03:15with your peers at work or school?
03:17With everyone sharing their highest moments
03:19on their Instagram stories or Twitter feeds,
03:22you might harbor a sense of insecurity
03:23because of the achievements of others.
03:25Understand that social media is a highlight reel.
03:28Everyone's lives aren't always as perfect and glamorous
03:30as they make them out to be.
03:32Instead, look inwards
03:34and focus on your own self-improvement
03:36rather than one-upping people
03:37who are dealing with their own journeys.
03:39Number seven, you sabotage yourself.
03:42Do you notice behaviors that you do
03:44that are destructive and cause pain in the end?
03:46These could be as simple as procrastinating your work
03:49or sleeping late.
03:50Oftentimes, your fears might get the better of you,
03:53causing you to be paralyzed in fear and uncertainty.
03:56By doing this, you're closing the doors to your own progress.
03:59To help reframe your actions,
04:01try to get to the root causes of your actions
04:04and take small, meaningful steps
04:06to better yourself day by day.
04:08They don't have to be big goals, just consistent.
04:11And later on, you'll realize how these steps snowball
04:14into making you a better version of yourself.
04:16And number eight, you don't practice gratitude.
04:20When was the last time you stopped to practice gratitude?
04:23Gratitude allows you to celebrate
04:24the positive things in your life.
04:26Robert Emmons of UC Berkeley found that gratitude
04:29comes with an abundance of mental health benefits.
04:33It improves sleep, makes you feel more alive,
04:35and can make you feel less lonely.
04:37One way you can practice gratitude
04:39is by writing down a small list
04:41of things you're grateful for in a journal.
04:43By listing things daily,
04:44you bring to light things that make you happy,
04:47which in turn improves your mood as well.
04:49So have you found yourself doing any of these habits?
04:52Taking care of your mental health,
04:53especially in a time like this,
04:55is more important now than ever.
