00:00Johor needs to collaborate with the federal government to ensure the success of its plan
00:07for selected schools to focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics, says
00:13an educationist.
00:15This follows Johor Mundribasar on Hafez Ghazi's announcement that the state plans to designate
00:20two primary and two secondary schools to focus on STEM subjects and English in a pilot project.
00:26Association of Science, Technology and Innovation President Yunus Yassin said for Johor's plan
00:31to be effective at a macro level, the education ministry might need to review how the education
00:36system is structured and consider decentralizing it.
00:40He pointed out that Malaysia's education system is currently centralized under the
00:44ministry unlike in the U.S. where each state and district within a state can introduce
00:49its own syllabus.
00:51Yunus said Johor may struggle to scale up the program given its likely high costs and
00:55will need to ensure it had enough capable teachers.
00:58Meanwhile, Parent Action Group for Education Chairman Nur Azima Rahim believed the program
01:04will help generate a highly skilled workforce in Johor.
01:08She said students of the school stand to gain an edge in job marketability and lead in scientific
01:12and engineering advancements after graduating.
