00:07:30Thanksgiving day like this one in Texas.
00:07:32Well it's great of course it's unique.
00:07:34I don't know that it's ever happened here in Dallas Texas
00:07:36and Texas Stadium.
00:07:37I love that Heisman Trophy slide on the ice dome out here.
00:07:41So we're excited right now.
00:07:43We've been talking to these here.
00:07:44I tell you you weren't breathing so easy when you walked in here
00:07:47until we saw that part when we were waiting on right now.
00:07:49I was shaking.
00:07:50I said Mike did that happen to you a lot when those games.
00:07:54Yeah Mike shakes a lot.
00:07:55He and I have been wondering all fall as have millions how and
00:07:59when you will settle your long term situation with Troy
00:08:02Aikman.
00:08:03What can you tell us about the situation with it.
00:08:05Well the only thing factual is that Troy has a two year
00:08:07contract right now this year and next.
00:08:11It's in the best interest of the Cowboys and Troy to
00:08:13renegotiate that contract.
00:08:15Troy will be the quarterback of the Cowboys for as long as he's
00:08:18in the NFL in my opinion.
00:08:20And so we're going to get it done.
00:08:21It's important to get it done before January 1st for him and
00:08:24the Cowboys.
00:08:25There's no issue.
00:08:26But what about this to Lincoln Kennedy.
00:08:29Well first of all big 44 way Lincoln Coleman guys not
00:08:32Lincoln.
00:08:34First of all he weighs two hundred and fifty pounds came
00:08:37in with about four days left in training camp really does have
00:08:40unique skills for a two hundred and fifty pounder.
00:08:43And I sat down with Mike.
00:08:44Mike gave me so much grief about not having Emmitt Smith on this
00:08:47team.
00:08:48And I said Mike do you realize he makes about 2 percent of what
00:08:51Emmitt makes and look at him run that ball.
00:08:53I love it.
00:08:54That's your favorite player now because you only have to pay him
00:08:56a hundred thousand.
00:08:56I love it.
00:08:57Well I always knew it was but a short step from arena football
00:09:00to the NFL right.
00:09:01Well Mike you told me of course we're not taking anything away
00:09:03from the great skills Emmitt Smith.
00:09:05But you said we both know that it can be close.
00:09:08But when the players and the fans know it that's real as far
00:09:11as Emmitt and Cole Dickenburg speculated toward the end of the
00:09:13first half as to what might be the situation between NFL owners
00:09:17and television networks on a future contract.
00:09:19Well of course nothing is more important to the NFL than
00:09:22successful negotiations with the networks.
00:09:24And we know how important it is to keep the tradition of NBC
00:09:27CBS their own track.
00:09:29I'm excited.
00:09:30Our game is so exciting.
00:09:32Bring so much as programming and we're all so proud to be a part
00:09:35of it.

00:10:20When we return we will hear from the always humorous Art
00:10:24Donovan a member of the first NFL team to have played in
00:10:26Dallas.
00:10:27Back in 1952 they played on Thanksgiving Day against the
00:10:30Dallas Texans not the Dallas Texans who later became the
00:10:33Kansas City Chiefs.
00:10:35No this was the team that lasted one season later became the
00:10:37Baltimore Colts.
00:10:39They won only one game but they did have one fascinating
00:10:42character on the team.
00:10:43Art Donovan.
00:10:45It was just one big one big party after another.
00:10:49We had the team folded and we went on the headquarters of the
00:10:53Hershey Pennsylvania and if you're ever in Hershey
00:10:56Pennsylvania in November there's nothing to do but to eat
00:10:59chocolate in the daytime and drink a few beers at night.
00:11:03And it was it was unbelievable.
00:11:05We used to practice volleyball hit the football over the goal
00:11:08post and I was that we we practiced for half an hour and a
00:11:13coach would call us up and say OK man we're looking too good
00:11:17we're just liable to beat the bears.
00:11:19Everybody in.
00:11:20And I was that.
00:11:24The morning the afternoon of the game we played the bears in
00:11:27Akron.
00:11:28It's all about the Dallas Texans like head coach Jimmy
00:11:32Farrell and he says I'm going to dispense with the customary
00:11:35introductions and we're going to go up in the stands and meet
00:11:38them individually.
00:11:39So we got out on the field about eight or nine guys jumped the
00:11:42fence and went up and shaking hands with the people only
00:11:44four thousand.
00:11:46The people they got a big kick out of it was a real close game
00:11:49and I can remember right near the end we threw a pass and the
00:11:54guy on the bench he knocked it down but instead of knocking it
00:11:57down he knocked it up in the air on our end or whoever he was.
00:12:01He's the long gone.
00:12:02He caught it and then we won the ballgame and you thought we were
00:12:06world champs.
00:12:07I have to say that would be the most memorable thing in the
00:12:11national football history because how we beat it is beyond
00:12:15me and I heard that afterwards when the bears left Akron by
00:12:18plane to go back to Chicago they had their Thanksgiving Day
00:12:23dinners given to them on a plane and the house went down to the
00:12:27aisle and a plane kicking the dinners out of their lap.
00:12:31It must have been beautiful going back to Chicago.
00:12:36George Alice kicking Thanksgiving dinners into the
00:12:38airplane aisle.
00:12:39Is that the Papa Bear you knew that that wasn't turkey on those
00:12:43plates.
00:12:43It was probably groundhog or crow.
00:12:46Let's get team reports now as the Cowboys lead 14 7 starting
00:12:50with OJ and the Dolphins juice.
00:12:52Well talk to the Dolphins as they came out of the locker room
00:12:54they said a big word is to tackle that when the Cowboys
00:12:57brought in their big back that they didn't make good tackles on
00:13:00them.
00:13:00So the coach was on their cases to make better tackles as my
00:13:03family throw snowballs at me.
00:13:05Incidentally offered all it's hurt.
00:13:07I don't think he'll be playing in the second half.
00:13:09He has a bad hamstring.
00:13:11Well what's happening with the Cowboys.
00:13:12Well just with Jimmy Johnson come off the field I talked to
00:13:15him and he said he was going to talk all year out throughout the
00:13:18halftime to his players about not giving up the big play.
00:13:21He said when Keith Byers has a long run for a touchdown on the
00:13:23first half they're in a defense they seldom ever use and they
00:13:27wouldn't use that the rest of the game.
00:13:29Let's go back up to Jim and Mike.

00:14:15No no one would believe it in Hollywood.
00:14:17This big guy 250 pounds played very little college football and
00:14:22have wandered around here in his native Dallas and worked odd
00:14:26jobs played a little semi pro ball.
00:14:29Look at him rumble.
00:14:30He's the man who set up the drive in the first half.
00:14:32He's the man who's going to be the guy who's going to be the
00:14:34guy who's going to be the guy who's going to be the guy who's
00:14:36going to be the guy who's going to be the guy who's going to be
00:14:37the guy who's going to be the guy who's going to be the guy
00:14:40who was the man who set up the drive that tied the game for
00:14:44Dallas and actually outran the star Emmett Smith.
00:14:51Down the stick.
00:15:01In his days with a Penn State Nittany Lions all the way out to
00:15:03the 42 yard line of thirty three yard return.
00:15:06Scott GB with the tackle as we looked for his life.
00:15:09Dallas and almost two to one in
00:15:11possession time for Dallas but
00:15:14look at the yardage 179 178 which
00:15:17you don't see 64 yards on the
00:15:19punt return.
00:15:19I think if there's a shocking
00:15:20number there it's just three
00:15:21turnovers because one of those
00:15:23turnovers was Terry Kirby not
00:15:25even turning around and the bird
00:15:26hitting him in the back of the
00:15:27head.
00:15:28Bill Bates comes up with the
00:15:29interception so a pretty clean
00:15:31half under these conditions.
00:15:33Mark Higgs gets the toss and he's
00:15:36wrapped up at the 45 yard line.
00:15:38Charles Haley stood him up well
00:15:40after other than the buyer 77
00:15:43yard TD run Miami has now 11
00:15:45carries 22 yards and this one
00:15:47right at Haley you see Richmond
00:15:48Webb on him and when Higgs
00:15:50bounces back inside Haley there
00:15:53to make the tackle.
00:15:54This game remains a field
00:15:56position game.
00:15:58Both coaches have to think about
00:16:00protecting the football getting
00:16:02their defense as much yardage
00:16:03behind them as they possibly can
00:16:05in the second half and plenty of
00:16:07each team atop their respective
00:16:08division in the NFL.
00:16:09The bird slipping as he sets up
00:16:11then lines one deep and caught
00:16:14by Mark Ingram under these
00:16:16conditions a stunning catch.

00:16:21throw by Steve DeVere outstanding

00:17:05was the backup to Herschel

00:17:10He said Herschel never left left
00:17:11the field would not leave the
00:17:13field no matter what happened.
00:17:15And he goes to Philadelphia
00:17:17Herschel shows up there.
00:17:18He goes to Miami and now he's
00:17:20carrying the big load.
00:17:22Touching six hundred yards on
00:17:23the season as the top rushers of
00:17:25the Dolphins a ball inside the
00:17:2615.
00:17:30Byers into the near flat and by
00:17:32the way Keith Byers has not
00:17:33caught a pass yet and Byers has
00:17:35had a 87 game streak of catching
00:17:38at least one ball.
00:17:40Watch Keith Jackson again a free

00:17:43screen.
00:17:43Well Haley holds him up a little
00:17:44bit but he opens up Norton lets

00:18:23defensive backs and Kirby runs a
00:18:25little circle route there you

00:18:28they're all over the place which

00:18:31football first and goal Miami it
00:18:33looks like to me that at the
00:18:34five yard line trailing 14 to 7
00:18:37a very important drive for Don
00:18:40Schiller's team to come out of
00:18:41that locker room and try to
00:18:43strike get back into the game
00:18:46they've won on a straight first
00:18:48down to have the Dolphins and
00:18:50they figure to hear on first and
00:18:51go it's fire and they finally
00:18:55get him going sideways and that
00:18:57word momentum ends after a two
00:18:59yard game to see us was there
00:19:01and the Dolphins win the first
00:19:03game of the first interesting
00:19:06formation there they had kids
00:19:08blocking for Keith Byers twenty
00:19:11one in front of forty one very
00:19:13unusual Higgy when he lines up
00:19:17behind Keith Byers the short
00:19:19little guy and Byers is so tall
00:19:21he's got to kind of offset a
00:19:22little bit to see the line of
00:19:24scrimmage and also the the snap
00:19:26when they're in the eye
00:19:27formation this time what we use

00:19:29prior right big loss back to the
00:19:43ten yard line Byers was very
00:19:46very late off the ball and he
00:19:49gets on the outside it's just so
00:19:52tough to run wide on this field
00:19:54and the yardage is being made
00:19:55by the Dolphins so now Byers
00:19:58comes out Kirby comes back in
00:20:00and the seven defensive backs
00:20:01are looking for a Kirby
00:20:04reception third and goal what he
00:20:19do here Larry Brown helping out
00:20:24on the tackle and incomes the
00:20:25double units Toyana bits with
00:20:27what would amount to an extra
00:20:28point he missed a 44 yard
00:20:33attempt at the start of the game
00:20:35when he slipped badly and just
00:20:36hit the line drive but he got
00:20:39some good luck here.
00:20:40It's going to be placed right on
00:20:41the 10 yard line which has been
00:20:42cleared off a 20 yard field goal
00:20:45for a sign of it and the kick is
