00:00:00A winter storm has taken grip on the Dallas metropolitan area.
00:00:05Yesterday, 62 degrees.
00:00:06Right now, 26 degrees.
00:00:08And with the wind chill factor, it's about minus 1.
00:00:11The tarp was on the field all morning,
00:00:13but it's been taken off.
00:00:14And in fact, pregame activities have been curtailed somewhat.
00:00:17It's very slick, and the footing is going to be difficult.
00:00:20For the Dolphins, they are not a good bad weather team.
00:00:23In games below freezing in their history,
00:00:25they've won just three out of nine games.
00:00:28And this is famed Texas Stadium in Irving, Texas.
00:00:31The traditional Thanksgiving football feast
00:00:33continues here with the defending Super Bowl
00:00:35champion Dallas Cowboys hosting the Miami Dolphins.
00:00:39Weather, an enormous factor today.
00:00:41The temperature in Dallas, 26 degrees.
00:00:43With a strong wind, a mix of rain and sleep,
00:00:46the wind chill, five degrees above zero.
00:00:52On this Thanksgiving day at Texas Stadium,
00:00:54the path to the Super Bowl for these two outstanding teams
00:00:57is an icy one.
00:01:00Chill factor around zero.
00:01:02Temperature on the field, 26 degrees.
00:01:04Sleet in this weather storm that has struck Central Texas.
00:01:09The Dolphins and the Cowboys.
00:01:12And we welcome you on this Thanksgiving day.
00:01:14Dick Henberg along with Bob Trumpy, two marquee teams
00:01:17and lots of hopes being realized and dreams.
00:01:20And one belonged to a man almost 40 years of age.
00:01:23Too old to play professional football.
00:01:25Steve DeBerg quarterbacks the Miami Dolphins today.
00:01:29Dickie was unemployed two weeks ago.
00:01:30He was in Tampa, comes to Miami.
00:01:32When he got off the bus this morning,
00:01:34he only had on was a short-sleeved shirt.
00:01:37No jacket whatsoever.
00:01:39But he said he comes to Miami, and he
00:01:41is looking at and now playing with the best offense he
00:01:45has ever been a part of.
00:01:46Now, this is the sixth team he's ever played for.
00:01:49One of them was San Francisco.
00:01:50He thinks this is better than San Francisco's offense.
00:01:53Better wide receivers, he said.
00:01:55And he likes the way that offensive line is
00:01:57constructed to protect the passer.
00:01:59Now, let's go to the Dallas Cowboys.
00:02:00When healthy, everyone says, hey, Super Bowl,
00:02:03chance to repeat the Title I in January at the Rose Bowl.
00:02:06But not today.
00:02:08Not today.
00:02:08They're not healthy.
00:02:09With Troy Aikman coming off the hamstring,
00:02:11trying to do what he can for the offense.
00:02:14Jimmy Johnson told us he encouraged Troy,
00:02:16throw the ball away.
00:02:18Don't run with it.
00:02:19And with the case of Emmitt Smith,
00:02:21he practiced yesterday in the offensive part of the practice,
00:02:24tried to stretch out his thigh as best he could.
00:02:26But in the last four days, two trainers
00:02:29have lived with Emmitt Smith, giving him
00:02:32treatment on that bruised thigh every waking moment
00:02:35to try to get him ready.
00:02:37Cowboys won the toss and will receive.
00:02:40We should point out, as you can see, the snow sweep
00:02:42are trying to clear at least the yard lines,
00:02:44that anywhere there is paint, like the blue star
00:02:48in the center of the field or the numbers that
00:02:50mark the strikes, it is very treacherous.
00:02:54So we'll see some slipping and sliding
00:02:56whenever athletes hit anything that's painted.
00:02:58That's rock ice.
00:03:01Kevin Williams, who played at the University of Miami,
00:03:05and Brock Merian are deep for Dallas.
00:03:08Merian, a rookie from Nevada, Reno.
00:03:10And we're underway on Stojanovic's spinner.
00:03:13To Williams at the 7.
00:03:16Gently moving.
00:03:18Fumbles and recovers his fumble at the 26-yard line.
00:03:22And as you said, Bob, trophy special teams
00:03:24could decide this game.
00:03:26Here come the Cowboys.
00:03:28And Troy Eggman, coming back after the hamstring injury,
00:03:31suffered two and a half games ago.
00:03:33And these are the men who will protect him well today.
00:03:35You can be sure that's the charge from Jimmy Johnson,
00:03:38Tuan A. Newton, Stemtoski, Gogan, and Williams.
00:03:41The backfield for Dallas.
00:03:42Emmitt Smith does start.
00:03:45Darryl Johnson, so versatile.
00:03:47Irvin and Harper, brilliant outside.
00:03:49And Jay Novacek was led all tight ends and catches
00:03:51in the 90s.
00:03:52Williams comes in when they go three wide.
00:03:57From the 26, Nathan comes out throwing.
00:04:01And it's off the fingertips of Michael Irvin
00:04:05on the far sidelines.
00:04:07Defense for Miami.
00:04:10Cross is having another terrific year.
00:04:1210 and a half sacks.
00:04:13Klingbeil, tough against the run.
00:04:15Golik the ex-Eagle, Marco Coleman.
00:04:17Powder replaces Grimsley, outside linebacker.
00:04:20Offerdahl returns.
00:04:21He came back actually last week.
00:04:23And Brian Cox, mighty tough, a pro bowler.
00:04:25Vincent and Brown on the corners.
00:04:27Williams and Oliver at safety.
00:04:28And those are the men that really are going to see
00:04:30the pressure of S.B. Jackson and Nickelback
00:04:32because their footing is so treacherous
00:04:35when they don't know where that receiver's going.
00:04:38Second and 10.
00:04:39Emmitt Smith throws that sore quadriceps muscle
00:04:42and really didn't have much burst, did he?
00:04:46And Brian Cox celebrates the tackle.
00:04:49Dick, what Dallas is trying to find out here
00:04:51in the initial stages is,
00:04:53can Emmitt Smith carry the ball
00:04:55like Emmitt Smith normally can?
00:04:57He can fill two roles today.
00:04:59He can either carry the ball and be the normal Emmitt Smith
00:05:02or he can be a decoy.
00:05:04Miami on the other side of the ball
00:05:06trying to figure out the same thing.
00:05:07Is it the real Emmitt Smith
00:05:09or is it the decoy Emmitt Smith?
00:05:11And if it isn't the real Smith,
00:05:13then they can adjust their whole defensive scheme
00:05:15to stop the outside receiver
00:05:18not focused on the running game.
00:05:21Third and long for Aikman.
00:05:25Through the fingertips of Michael Irvin again.
00:05:28So two passes, Irvin unable to pull in either.
00:05:31And on the first, Dallas possession three and out.
00:05:35On the kick is John Jett,
00:05:37who leads the NFL in net punting yardage over 40 a kick.
00:05:40Dick, already look what they're trying to do here.
00:05:42They're trying to, as best they possibly can,
00:05:45zone these outside guys.
00:05:47So it's difficult for Aikman
00:05:49to hit the big receivers on this team.
00:05:51Harper and Irvin.
00:05:54Neither one of these coaches know
00:05:55what their teams can do at this point.
00:05:57They're just out there guessing.
00:05:59John Jett, a year ago, he was selling copying machines
00:06:01in Greenville, North Carolina.
00:06:03Talk about giving thanks.
00:06:05He delivers a beautiful kick and a flag is down.
00:06:09Jett was hit as he delivered the ball.
00:06:10O.J. McDuffie, the rookie from Penn State, out of bounds.
00:06:14But it looks as if this is coming back
00:06:16and Dallas will get a first down on the penalty
00:06:19or is it just, is it running into or a personal foul?
00:06:23If it's a personal foul, it's a first down.
00:06:25If it's running into, with that good a kick,
00:06:30Dallas may decline the penalty.
00:06:32Bill Bates, the acting captain,
00:06:34it was running into the kicker.
00:06:36Five yard penalty.
00:06:39So Jimmy says, hey, take the kick.
00:06:45I don't blame Miami for trying to put pressure
00:06:47on the punter.
00:06:48I mean, anything you can do here to disrupt timing
00:06:51in the early stages of this game, Dick,
00:06:53is very sound coaching in my estimation.
00:06:58So the Dolphins' offense takes the field.
00:07:01Richmond Webb, a Dallas native
00:07:02and one of the best offensive linemen in the league.
00:07:04Sims, Dellenbach, Widener, and Keller, another ex-Eagle.
00:07:09DeBerg in his second start in Miami.
00:07:12Higgs had over 100 yards.
00:07:14Once again, rushing last week.
00:07:15Byers, another ex-Eagle.
00:07:16Friar having a big season.
00:07:18Ingram, a giant a year ago.
00:07:20And Keith Jackson, a tight end.
00:07:22Three wides, Terry Kirby,
00:07:23the rookie from Virginia into the backfield.
00:07:25Tony Martin, the third wide up.
00:07:31They start at the 34-yard line.
00:07:34The toss to Higgs, who was drafted by the Cowboys
00:07:38out of Kentucky, and he gets a couple.
00:07:40Tony Casillas in on the stop, number 75.
00:07:44Tolbert, Casillas, Maryland,
00:07:45and Haley, the front four for Dallas.
00:07:47Haley continues to Harris quarterbacks.
00:07:50Edwards, Ken Norton playing with a torn bicep tendon
00:07:55is in the middle.
00:07:55Darren Smith, a rookie from Miami,
00:07:57moving into the starting lineup early this year.
00:07:59Kevin Smith and Larry Brown at the corners
00:08:01and Woodson and Everett at safety.
00:08:06Second and seven into the eyes of Norton,
00:08:08one of the Super Bowl heroes.
00:08:11The birds first pass.
00:08:13And he goes to the tight end.
00:08:15Jackson protecting the ball.
00:08:17He's hit just shy of the first down by Norton and Woodson.
00:08:22One of the things the Miami Dolphins have done,
00:08:24they've infused a little toughness
00:08:26into this football team from the NFC.
00:08:28He's picking up all of these former Philadelphia Eagles,
00:08:31Jackson being probably the greatest asset.
00:08:35And when you see short little patterns like that,
00:08:38that's just Don Shula
00:08:39and Gary Stevens experimenting here.
00:08:41What can we do?
00:08:43They'll stretch it a little more,
00:08:44but we start out with just a five or six yard pattern
00:08:47for completion.
00:08:49Third down a yard.
00:08:55Faked by the bird, one of the best at that.
00:08:57And wide open in the middle is Kirby and he falls down.
00:09:00And while down, the ball is knocked free.
00:09:03No fumble, no fumble.
00:09:04He was already down.
00:09:06Darren Smith made the tackle.
00:09:07And there's the field,
00:09:08perhaps costing Miami a touchdown.
00:09:10Kirby was all alone, but couldn't hold his footing.
00:09:14Good play action fake by Steve DeBerg.
00:09:16He's always done that throughout his career.
00:09:18And Kirby comes so wide open.
00:09:20He turns around and then,
00:09:22I think they call that a salt cow,
00:09:24but he lands on his outside edge.
00:09:27Thank you, Brian Boitano.
00:09:29I didn't realize.
00:09:3219 yards on the play.
00:09:35And Miami's Dolphins are in Dallas territory
00:09:40inside the 40 yard line.
00:09:43Steve DeBerg told us last night
00:09:44that most teams that he's caught on with,
00:09:47he's caught on at the beginning of the season,
00:09:49he comes to Miami, he's got to pick up his offense
00:09:52on this dead run.
00:09:53Dan Marino sits next to him at every meeting,
00:09:56going over every single play.
00:09:58So he knows as much as he can possibly absorb.
00:10:00But doesn't wear any wristband with plays.
00:10:02He said, I want to know it.
00:10:04Made only one mistake last week
00:10:06and his first start has trouble setting himself
00:10:08and then goes long for Friar.
00:10:12And Friar skidding off the field of play.
00:10:14Larry Brown defending for Dallas.
00:10:19Tough for those defensive linemen
00:10:21to get a good push off the line of scrimmage.
00:10:23Especially the light ones.
00:10:24Haley is not a particularly big guy
00:10:26and he's also facing Richmond Webb,
00:10:28who is a very, very good pass rusher
00:10:30and knows how to hold and get away with it.
00:10:33Richmond from Dallas had to get 35 tickets
00:10:36for family members today.
00:10:38And Haley doesn't have the numbers of the pass rush
00:10:41this year because of the bulging distance back,
00:10:44but that's a good matchup, 78-94 all day.
00:10:49Second and 10 from the Dallas 38-yard line.
00:10:52DeBird has a man and a good catch by Mark Ingram.
00:10:56He's used to playing in tough weather, the ex-Giant.
00:10:59And they'll spot that when 11 yards first down.
00:11:04And Miami's choice here at the outset
00:11:06is a lot of play, action, fakes.
00:11:08You see the cornerback looking in there.
00:11:11Ingram does a good job of keeping his feet underneath him.
00:11:14Mike Ditka talked about you can't move on this field.
00:11:18He's right, but there is a way to run patterns in snow
00:11:20and that's the short, choppy steps,
00:11:22keeping over your feet, not trying to stretch out too much.
00:11:25Ingram did a great job for a nice completion.
00:11:28DeBird, who played his college ball decades ago
00:11:30at San Jose State, three for four off the top of the game.
00:11:35And he's gonna throw on first down.
00:11:37The middle, boy, tough catch by Keith Jackson
00:11:40at the 22 of Dallas.
00:11:42Cam Norton, still another tackle
00:11:44assisted by Dixon Edwards.
00:11:48I'm not sure when this happened,
00:11:50but when teams stopped holding up the tight end,
00:11:53guys like Jackson started making millions of dollars.
00:11:56It didn't used to be that easy,
00:11:58but they allow tight ends to just get down in there
00:12:01and that's like a rebound underneath the basket.
00:12:02Jackson with that big body can make those catches.
00:12:07Five yards on the play, second and five at the Dallas 22.
00:12:13Kirby and Byers behind DeBird, who throws again.
00:12:20Dumps it off incomplete to Kirby
00:12:21and breaking it up was Darren Smith.
00:12:25Remember what he told us last night?
00:12:26I asked Steve, I said, look, you come in here,
00:12:29you come in here, Steve DeBird comes in here
00:12:31with a new responsibility.
00:12:32What's the one thing that you don't wanna do?
00:12:34Throw the interception.
00:12:35Well, it almost happens here.
00:12:37Haley trying to get to the quarterback.
00:12:39DeBird could have run for the first down.
00:12:42That ball bounced off Kirby's shoulder pads
00:12:47and that's what you wanna try to avoid.
00:12:49Look at the stuff coming down.
00:12:50There's sleep coming down here on these guys.
00:12:54Meanwhile in Miami, folks watching mid-70s,
00:12:56we understand, almost 50 degrees warmer.
00:13:00Third and five for DeBird.
00:13:03And he has to eat it at the 27-yard line.
00:13:06The sack to Tony Casillas and Tony Tolbert.
00:13:14Casillas, who is a star at Oklahoma, Tolbert at UTEP.
00:13:19What Dallas is doing here is trying twists
00:13:22to try to get some pressure on DeBird
00:13:24just to disrupt some of the timing.
00:13:26This time it works.
00:13:27Russell Maryland comes in there
00:13:29and flushes DeBird out of the pocket
00:13:31and Tolbert makes the sack.
00:13:33Doug Peterson kneels inside the 35.
00:13:37This will be a 44-yard attempt by Stoyanovich.
00:13:41Well within his range, but what kind of footing will he get?
00:13:45Oh my, line drive right to Everett.
00:13:48And of course, that's returnable.
00:13:50And I don't know why he hesitated.
00:13:51He might've been able to go all the way.
00:13:53He went out of bounds a considerable time ago,
00:13:56but you can't see the sidelines
00:13:57and Stoyanovich has to deduct points on the fall.
00:14:03That program, the free program,
00:14:06diminished somewhat by this effort.
00:14:08They even cleared the spot there,
00:14:10but you can see his plant foot gave away immediately.
00:14:13And then 27, Everett wasn't sure
00:14:16what to do with the football.
00:14:17Norton out there is a lead blocker.
00:14:20This is a good spot, but watch his left foot.
00:14:23He just slid right out from underneath him.
00:14:24So now it appears field goals aren't gonna work
00:14:28at least from 44 yards.
00:14:3244-yard attempt by Rye and now Dallas with a ball
00:14:36and Jimmy Johnson says,
00:14:37come on, Everett, this might be a great chance to score.
00:14:44Welcome back to Texas Stadium.
00:14:46The sleep continues to fall.
00:14:47Stoyanovich sliding on his 44-yard field goal attempt
00:14:51and Dallas takes over at the 39.
00:14:55Emmitt Smith still a tailback.
00:14:57Aikman, complete, Alvin Hopper and Hopper out of bounds
00:15:01at the 45.
00:15:02It appears that from the DeVerve series
00:15:05that better luck throwing the ball
00:15:06up the middle of the field,
00:15:07the wide outs, the long wides,
00:15:09especially as Dallas tried in the first possession,
00:15:12tougher to catch and control.
00:15:14Dick, I think that's an excellent point.
00:15:15And I think the other thing we learned
00:15:16off the two first offensive drives is this game is,
00:15:20for now until the end of it,
00:15:21a field position football game.
00:15:23Coaches gotta be thinking about
00:15:25how we can maintain good field position.
00:15:29From the Dallas 46, second and three and a half
00:15:32and there goes Emmitt Smith to a first down.
00:15:34Nothing wrong with that spurt by Smith
00:15:36with a badly bruised quadricep muscle in front of the thigh.
00:15:40He thought it was broken on Sunday.
00:15:42As a matter of fact, I talked to Kevin O'Neal,
00:15:44the trainer of the Dallas Cowboys yesterday at practice.
00:15:47They discovered that Emmitt Smith
00:15:50injured his thigh in high school
00:15:53and there was a slight bit of calcification on the femur,
00:15:56a little raising of calcification.
00:15:58That added to the bleeding in the leg
00:16:01and that's why it was so swollen
00:16:03and they had to undergo so much extra treatment
00:16:06to try to get him ready.
00:16:07It's the right time.
00:16:09Play action take and a throw,
00:16:11a complete third and then he drops it.
00:16:13Irvin had it for a moment.
00:16:14Back to Emmitt Smith.
00:16:17He had not missed a start since a college sophomore.
00:16:23So durable and a man who also doesn't fumble.
00:16:25With all the touches that he has this year,
00:16:27he's fumbled only one time.
00:16:29And they play action fake Emmitt Smith here
00:16:31to try to draw the linebackers
00:16:33and Irvin with a little slant.
00:16:35Actually, J.B. Brown does an excellent job
00:16:38in coverage there.
00:16:39Footing is bad.
00:16:41You got big receivers like Michael Irvin.
00:16:43Pitches, trick outs, I think those work.
00:16:47225 straight passes by Dallas quarterbacks
00:16:49without an intersection.
00:16:50Nothing there for Emmitt on this play.
00:16:53Struggles for a yard or two to the Miami 48-yard line.
00:16:57Yeah, but you know, Dick,
00:16:58you say nothing there for Emmitt Smith.
00:16:59But psychologically, what that does for the Dallas Cowboys
00:17:03is it keeps the Miami defense spread.
00:17:05You've still got to respect the heart and soul
00:17:07of this offense and that's Emmitt Smith.
00:17:10So Smith, who has led this National Football League
00:17:14in rushing the last two years,
00:17:17still has designs on it,
00:17:18although with his entry and late reporting,
00:17:20missed the first two games,
00:17:21starts today with around 750 yards rushing.
00:17:26Aikman comes it off to Smith.
00:17:28And Smith fighting to get to the first down yardstick,
00:17:32takes quite a hit.
00:17:33Chris Green, number 42,
00:17:35nickelback coming up from the secondary.
00:17:37To this point, Emmitt Smith looks fine.
00:17:40He didn't pick up the first down,
00:17:41but if this kid can play this football game,
00:17:44when they got back from Atlanta,
00:17:45they took him to the training room
00:17:46and the first thing they did was bend his leg
00:17:48and keep it bent to try to have all the blood surface.
00:17:52They then straightened it out.
00:17:53They began treatment sometimes
00:17:55until two o'clock in the morning.
00:17:57An assistant trainer went over to his house
00:17:59and stayed there with Emmitt Smith.
00:18:01Yesterday was the first day run.
00:18:02He also told us, no needles.
00:18:05The first day run, he also told us, no needles.
00:18:07I am not injecting any part of my body
00:18:09to play a football game.
00:18:11Fourth and two at the Miami 42.
00:18:15A high floater, McGuffey,
00:18:18the fair catch at the 24-yard line.
00:18:21So the Dolphins with it at the 24,
00:18:23no score, first quarter.
00:18:29Oh, this part of Texas,
00:18:30you don't often see those fires in the hearth,
00:18:33but it's going to feel good today.
00:18:35Fans are afraid of this terrible weather.
00:18:40Severe winter storm warnings
00:18:42throughout this part of Texas, central Texas.
00:18:4523-yard line Miami after a short 17-yard punt by John Chet.
00:18:52DeBird to Byers.
00:18:54Byers first to carry it.
00:18:55Look at him go. He's on his way.
00:18:58Byers, will he be caught?
00:19:01Keith Byers all the way to the goal line.
00:19:04Is he in? Touchdown!
00:19:06Oh, my!
00:19:1077 yards as he outraced Kevin Smith to the goal line.
00:19:26That is the longest run in Keith Byers' terrific career.
00:19:30Excellent blocking up front.
00:19:32And the thing that the offensive line did was keep their feet.
00:19:35And then I'm shocked at Keith Byers' speed.
00:19:38We're talking about a 250-pound fullback, H-back,
00:19:41tight end, whatever you want to call him.
00:19:43Whoa! He got the football in.
00:19:45He didn't get in. The ball did.
00:19:48And Byers does a nice belly flop right in the end zone.
00:19:5425 yards longer than his previous high career run.
00:19:58And Keith Byers goes 77 with a 6-0 lead.
00:20:01And now the adventure of the extra point by Stojanovic.
00:20:07He punches it through, and the Dolphins lead 7-0.
00:20:11At the end of this run, and Keith Byers is going to be asking for the oxygen.
00:20:15Watch the football. He's got it in his left arm, takes it out, puts it in his right.
00:20:19And the ball goes in the end zone.
00:20:22Well, Byers is known for having big and wide feet.
00:20:25And with his weight, perhaps on this field,
00:20:28he might be the best runner of all for Don Shula.
00:20:31Shula celebrates the early lead.
00:20:38One of the ex-Eagles, Keith Byers, and a Pittsburgh Pirate baseball fan,
00:20:44Roberto Clemente, was his first hero.
00:20:46And Byers with a nice home run run, 77 yards to give the Dolphins a 7-0 lead.
00:20:53As Kevin Williams, 85, Brock Marion, 31.
00:20:56Two rookies wait for Stojanovic's kickoff.
00:21:05Fairly good length, considering the footing.
00:21:07It comes down at the 15, the Williams.
00:21:12Williams dragged down by Chris Singleton.
00:21:16And a flag is down with it.
00:21:17While they sort out the flag, let's go back to the touchdown run.
00:21:20All right, look at the single blocking.
00:21:22Everybody's got a man.
00:21:24It's just nothing to it.
00:21:25And Byers comes shooting up here and then
00:21:27watched a block by Keith Jackson on Charles Haley at the end.
00:21:31It's an absolutely push and shove down, shove job.
00:21:36He gets Haley down.
00:21:38And I'm shocked that Keith Byers can outrun Kevin Smith.
00:21:42That blows me away.
00:21:43I mean, we're talking 250 to 180.
00:21:46And Smith is supposed to have outstanding speed.
00:21:49Again, here's the isolate of one of the key blocks.
00:21:52Haley can't get his hands away from Keith Jackson.
00:21:55Byers runs right by.
00:21:57You know, Jackson and Mark Ingram, Irving Fryer.
00:22:00Personal foul, face mask by number 55 of the kicking team.
00:22:0415-yard penalty, first down.
00:22:06Well, Singleton, who made the tackle, a 15-yard penalty.
00:22:13It's on Chris Singleton of the Miami Dolphins.
00:22:15Yeah, there you see he grabs ahold of the face mask
00:22:17and just spins him around.
00:22:19Back to Jackson on that block.
00:22:21He and Ingram and Fryer.
00:22:23Byers, they've got a bet that the one with the fewest
00:22:25knockdown blocks at the end of the year
00:22:27has to feed the rest of them.
00:22:29And they really take pride in their blocking.
00:22:31And Don Shula, even in talking about Irving Fryer,
00:22:34yesterday said, I have never seen a wide receiver block
00:22:37better than Fryer.
00:22:38I said, hey, coach, that covers a lot of great years for you.
00:22:41I was going to mention that if Jackson got in that bet
00:22:43with Ingram and Fryer, I would take him to loose.
00:22:46The chief is not known as a great blocker.
00:22:49Well, the Cowboys good field position after the penalty
00:22:52at their own 46.
00:22:53And Emmitt Smith will try the middle and gets about five.
00:22:57Marco Coleman and others make the tackle.
00:22:59And it's time now to check our natural gas quarterback
00:23:03efficiency ratings as we move into the stretch run
00:23:06of this 1993 NFL season.
00:23:08And Steve Young, what a game on Monday night
00:23:11against the Saints, moves into the lead
00:23:13with Aikman in second place.
00:23:14Holloway, Hebert, Esiason, Marino,
00:23:17although out for the year, still enough throws to qualify.
00:23:20Kozar, the backup to Aikman, is ninth.
00:23:24And there's Bernie.
00:23:25Boy, is he happy to be down in Dallas.
00:23:28What a year of tumult for him.
00:23:31Smith taking his way, shy of the first down,
00:23:34at the 45 of Miami.
00:23:36John Offerdahl and Dwight Hollier,
00:23:38Miami linebackers with a tackle.
00:23:40And Offerdahl, so happy to be back.
00:23:43Out, he said, you know, the first five years
00:23:45I did some nice things, got to a Pro Bowl and all,
00:23:47but our team wasn't very good.
00:23:49Yeah, he said, I had to make all the plays.
00:23:51Now I don't have to make the great plays.
00:23:53I'd love to be a part of this, and I can't stay healthy.
00:23:55Coming up with shoulder injury, last week
00:23:57played 20 or 30 snaps.
00:23:59This guy is one of Steve Smith's rock hits.
00:24:02That is the hardest, one of the hardest guys in the NFL
00:24:05to hit when you block.
00:24:07Steve Smith, the blocking back for the Raiders.
00:24:09Third and two, and it's Smith.
00:24:11And he slips and stays on his feet
00:24:14and appears on that second effort
00:24:16to be close to the first down.
00:24:17Hollier, the second-year backer from Carolina,
00:24:20in on the tackle again.
00:24:22Emmett now six carries, 17 yards.
00:24:29And it appears it'll require a measurement
00:24:31as Ed Hockley, the referee, looks to the sidelines.
00:24:38Now the deception continues.
00:24:40We still don't know how good or how bad Emmett Smith is.
00:24:44I mean, we can't make a determination yet
00:24:46because this looks a lot like Emmett Smith.
00:24:48He'll run four, five, six times nothing.
00:24:51And the next one, he also might pop one out
00:24:54for 25 or 30 yards.
00:24:56He says, you won't see any 60-yarders from me,
00:24:58but I think I can give you the 10-15.
00:25:01And he gave Dallas a first down at the Miami 44.
00:25:05The Dolphins lead 7-0 on a startling 77-yard touchdown
00:25:10run by Keith Byers.
00:25:15So from the 44-yard line, Miami territory,
00:25:18Troy Aikman with a new set of downs.
00:25:21You're doing a good job on that yard marker, sir.
00:25:23How do you know that?
00:25:24I'm sitting right next to it, and I don't know where it is.
00:25:28You're right. I'm telling you, you're right.
00:25:30But I don't know how you're doing it.
00:25:33I guess after almost 30 years of covering
00:25:35this National Football League, you know the 100 yards.
00:25:38Daryl Johnston in front of Emmitt Smith on the first down.
00:25:45Aikman pumping and going long.
00:25:48Going to be intercepted, but there's a flag down.
00:25:51Louis Oliver has the interception,
00:25:53but I believe he's going to have a hold against J.B. Brown
00:25:57as he was grabbing Michael Irvin.
00:26:00That was a hit and go by Irvin.
00:26:02J.B. Brown bought and had to just stop Irvin,
00:26:06and frankly, it's a good penalty.
00:26:10If he doesn't stop him, Aikman's going to hit him
00:26:13square in the numbers, and he's going to run it in.
00:26:17A five-yard penalty, not interference,
00:26:19five-yard first down.
00:26:30Watch the hitch.
00:26:31The fake right there, J.B. Brown bites.
00:26:34Actually, that's very smart on J.B. Brown's part.
00:26:41It was unlikely, Bob Trumpy, that Irvin on this field
00:26:46would have gotten to that ball.
00:26:47I think Oliver, had he not been held up,
00:26:49might have had the interception,
00:26:50and that's why Oliver was so upset
00:26:51that he lost the interception.
00:26:54It's a five-yard penalty and an automatic first down
00:26:57at the 39 of Miami.
00:26:59And there's the emotional part of the Miami Dolphins.
00:27:02Now, you just saw Brian Cox.
00:27:04This Miami Dolphins football team
00:27:06is so much more physical than it has been
00:27:10in the last 10 or 12 years,
00:27:11in part because of Brian Cox on the defense,
00:27:14a lot bigger defensive lineman.
00:27:16It used to be a finesse football team.
00:27:18It's not anymore.
00:27:22First down, Aikman.
00:27:24Dumps it off to Smith.
00:27:27And Smith showing good speed
00:27:29as he slides out of bounds at the 32-yard line.
00:27:33Brown and Vincent, two cornerbacks over there
00:27:36to get Smith.
00:27:37Dick, I was struck yesterday
00:27:39when we were at Dallas's practices.
00:27:41You'll watch this play come right at you.
00:27:43When Emmitt Smith went out to run,
00:27:45he came out in full pass,
00:27:47the new thigh boards he's wearing today
00:27:48to protect his thigh.
00:27:49He was jogging on an adjacent field
00:27:52to where the team was practicing.
00:27:54When he started jogging,
00:27:55the entire team stopped, turned around,
00:27:57looked at Emmitt.
00:27:58You know, they all made their own judgment
00:28:00as to what he looked like,
00:28:01but to this point, he's carrying the load.
00:28:03He's the kingpin in this Dallas offensive machine run.
00:28:07This time, Darryl Johnston
00:28:09and a champ Moose,
00:28:11his nickname as he plunges
00:28:14to about a yard from a first down.
00:28:16Jeff Cross and others with a stop at the 30.
00:28:20Shuler likes this kid.
00:28:22He likes all those guys who get dirty.
00:28:25We don't talk about him a lot,
00:28:27but he loves guys like Darryl Johnston
00:28:29who had Tony Page fill the same role.
00:28:31But he likes Johnston's versatility.
00:28:34He blocks, he catches, he runs,
00:28:36he just does everything so well.
00:28:41Scott Galbraith and Jane Overcheck,
00:28:43two tight ends now on third and one.
00:28:45And Aikman gonna throw for him.
00:28:47Intercepted by Cox!
00:28:49Brian Cox with Aikman to beat,
00:28:51and he's caught from behind by Galbraith.
00:28:54That's a Dallas 42-yard line.
00:28:57What an interception by Brian Cox.
00:29:00What bad weather.
00:29:04This is a sprint out by Dallas.
00:29:06He's coming right at you.
00:29:08The intended receiver is Harper.
00:29:10Brian Cox plays it beautifully.
00:29:12Makes an excellent reception.
00:29:14Ball to Miami.
00:29:16Only third interception thrown by Dallas all year.
00:29:24That's what they do on Thanksgiving
00:29:27when you get an interception
00:29:29as first of the year.
00:29:31Irvin is gonna run a pick.
00:29:33Here's the primary receiver,
00:29:35and here's Brian Cox.
00:29:37He plays this picture perfect
00:29:39for the interception.
00:29:41And it gives us Miami the third trip
00:29:43into Dallas territory.
00:29:45They missed the field goal,
00:29:47got the touchdown, and now
00:29:49first down from the 42,
00:29:51oh, very close to another six.
00:29:54He still has the arm at 39, doesn't he?
00:29:57Yeah, you know, he said, too,
00:29:59that if there's one person he can thank
00:30:01for teaching him football
00:30:03is Roger Staubach.
00:30:05Now, in 1977, he comes out of San Jose State,
00:30:08and he's here from May through to September,
00:30:11and Roger Staubach loved his arm.
00:30:13He's always been able to throw the football.
00:30:16He said, I came out of San Jose State,
00:30:18all I could do was throw it.
00:30:20Roger taught me a lot about football,
00:30:22and he said I'm forever thankful.
00:30:24And Roger Staubach, one of the guests
00:30:26on NFL Live earlier today,
00:30:28looks great, looks like he could
00:30:30still get out there and lead this Dallas team.
00:30:32Terry Kirby runs into a stack of Cowboys
00:30:35after a pickup of threes
00:30:37inside the 40-yard line.
00:30:40It would appear that in terms of field goals today,
00:30:43anything longer than outside the 20
00:30:46is going to be hazardous,
00:30:47that you can punch the ball,
00:30:49and you really can't deliver that hard charge
00:30:52to the kicker at the ball.
00:30:53Yeah, I think the first time that Stojanovic
00:30:55tried, he didn't clear an area big enough,
00:30:57as you said, Nick.
00:30:58Two, it might make Don Shula say,
00:31:01look, as opposed to a field goal here,
00:31:04let's pin him back to the goal line,
00:31:05because again, this is still
00:31:07a field position football game.
00:31:09Shotgun to Berg, he likes the shotgun.
00:31:12He told us that yesterday.
00:31:13Throws underneath.
00:31:15Kirby can't get away.
00:31:17First down, and now the fumble,
00:31:19as it ruled a fumble.
00:31:20They scramble, and it's called a fumble.
00:31:22Dallas ball.
00:31:29Kirby, understandably the rookie,
00:31:31trying to get the first down,
00:31:32and the second effort led to Dallas' chance
00:31:35to knock it away.
00:31:36And Dick, you didn't see Don Shula
00:31:37complain too much.
00:31:39The hit by Brock Marion,
00:31:41and the ball does come loose.
00:31:43That's a good call.
00:31:44I don't think that his forward momentum
00:31:46was stopped, and now it's two turnovers.
00:31:49One for each team.
00:31:50Dallas gets it back.
00:31:51James Washington, number 37,
00:31:53recovered for Dallas.
00:31:57Again, a small bit to apply
00:32:00to the rest of this game.
00:32:01Don't fight branches.
00:32:03Just hang on to the football,
00:32:04get to the ground.
00:32:09Dallas starts from the 32.
00:32:17Brought on a lot of aquamarine uniforms
00:32:19after a couple yards.
00:32:22And notice Chuck Climwell on the tackle.
00:32:24You would expect him to be good today.
00:32:27He's from Houghton, Michigan.
00:32:29He said they've been snowing up there
00:32:31at home for a long time already.
00:32:33This is just a little drizzle for him.
00:32:35And his athletic career started
00:32:37as an ice skater.
00:32:39So, I mean, he is right at home here.
00:32:43Big Montreal Canadian fan.
00:32:45Here over Cornwallie and Bryden
00:32:47and Mohavlis, not football players.
00:32:50H-Man to Johnston.
00:32:52And Willis is close to a first down.
00:32:55At the 42, Dwight Hollier,
00:32:57Troy Vincent with a stop.
00:32:59Johnston, who played at Syracuse.
00:33:05Dick, Miami's taking a chance here
00:33:07with the bad footing.
00:33:08What they're going to try to do
00:33:10is keep rolling these corners up,
00:33:11safeties out, make it difficult
00:33:13for these big receivers on the outside
00:33:14to get the ball.
00:33:15But Aikman hits the outlet receiver
00:33:17here beautifully.
00:33:18And that's the one thing that can
00:33:20work and work all day long.
00:33:22You see how your 50 has to come
00:33:24from the inside to assist
00:33:25on the tackle with Vincent.
00:33:27Out of the eye on third and one.
00:33:29Johnston and Emmitt.
00:33:31It's Smith sliding to a first down
00:33:34just shy of the 45-yard line.
00:33:36We have just over two minutes left
00:33:38in the first quarter here.
00:33:40Irving, Texas.
00:33:41It has been icy and sleeting
00:33:43since noon today.
00:33:44A winter storm that has sent out
00:33:47hazardous forecasts throughout
00:33:48this part of Texas.
00:33:49Players slipping and sliding
00:33:51on this Thanksgiving day.
00:33:52With one exception, Keith Byers
00:33:54who rumbled 77 yards for a Miami
00:33:57touchdown and a 7-0 lead.
00:34:00Two minutes to go in the quarter
00:34:01as they will measure.
00:34:03It appears he has plenty
00:34:05for the first down.
00:34:06But with all the yard markers
00:34:07obliterated, one best not guess.
00:34:10Maybe they ought to ask you.
00:34:11You've been darn good at it.
00:34:13I say first down by plenty.
00:34:15You're right again.
00:34:17If you just tune in, the tarp
00:34:19was on this field until an hour
00:34:21and a half before the game
00:34:22started.
00:34:23So this has accumulated in just
00:34:25about two hours and 15 minutes.
00:34:28And as you can see, not a heavy
00:34:30snow.
00:34:31This is an ice storm.
00:34:33Emmitt Smith now.
00:34:36Eight carries for 21 yards.
00:34:392.6 average.
00:34:40But it's just absolutely
00:34:41remarkable that this man, after
00:34:43what happened on Sunday and the
00:34:44pain of that injury, is still
00:34:46going.
00:34:51Play action.
00:34:52Aikman to Irvin.
00:34:54Michael Irvin.
00:34:56First down in Miami territory
00:34:58at the 45.
00:34:59J.B. Brown made the stop.
00:35:02Told us yesterday he's a yards
00:35:04guy.
00:35:05Not interested in a lot of
00:35:07catches, but wants those deep
00:35:08receptions.
00:35:09Jimmy Johnson said, this is the
00:35:11hardest working athlete I have
00:35:13ever been around in my life.
00:35:14I've been around him for ten
00:35:16years, and every year he's
00:35:17gotten better.
00:35:18This is one of the most proud
00:35:20individuals you will ever meet
00:35:22in a football uniform.
00:35:24And you met Michael Irvin and
00:35:26his big and happy family on our
00:35:28NFL live pregame show.
00:35:30And we had a couple of added
00:35:32comments from Irvin himself.
00:35:35Down the middle, incomplete.
00:35:36Off Irvin's fingertips at the 25
00:35:39and almost into the arms of the
00:35:42Miami Dolphins' Louis Oliver.
00:35:44And one of the things that
00:35:45Michael said to us that I love
00:35:47was, in a family of 17, we ask
00:35:50him what dinner was like around
00:35:51there, and he said, well, first
00:35:52off, dad ate first.
00:35:55His plate was filled first by
00:35:56mom.
00:35:57Absolutely.
00:35:58And then the rest of us kind of
00:35:59filled in.
00:36:04Roy Aikman, whether certainly
00:36:06bothering or not bothering his
00:36:07throwing arm, he's thrown ropes
00:36:09out there.
00:36:12Five for ten to Johnston.
00:36:15And his feet cut out by Jarvis
00:36:18Williams, who played at Florida
00:36:21with Emmett Smith.
00:36:22Yeah, they had a big hello and
00:36:24how are you before the ball game.
00:36:26Again, excellent coverage by
00:36:28Miami.
00:36:29You got to give the Dallas
00:36:30Cowboys those little swing
00:36:32passes, those little flare
00:36:33passes by the running backs
00:36:35underneath because they have
00:36:36such gifted wideouts.
00:36:38Harper and Irvin, you need
00:36:40support for the other people out
00:36:42there trying to cover them as
00:36:44best you can.
00:36:45And the pullback and the
00:36:46running back is going to be open
00:36:47all day long.
00:36:48It's more like third and six
00:36:49here as Shula sends in three
00:36:51more defensive backs.
00:36:53And it's Irvin underneath for a
00:36:54first down.
00:36:55No second.
00:36:58Yes, it is, Michael Irvin.
00:37:01Troy Vincent makes the tackle.
00:37:05This is a big receiver.
00:37:07Michael Irvin is a big, strong
00:37:10receiver.
00:37:12And Troy Vincent is a big
00:37:13cornerback.
00:37:14But you see just a little bit of
00:37:16distance between the cornerback
00:37:18and Michael Irvin.
00:37:20And Irvin is, see the hands
00:37:22there.
00:37:23He absorbs that hit and finds
00:37:25himself open.
00:37:26And Aikman makes the completion.
00:37:28Michael Irvin adding yards to
00:37:30his lead in the NFL over Jerry
00:37:32Rice.
00:37:33End of the quarter.
00:37:35Hello, I'm Nate Newton of
00:37:36Dallas Cowboys.
00:37:37I'd like to wish everybody a
00:37:38happy Thanksgiving.
00:37:39And if you can't eat turkey, eat
00:37:41French fries because I love
00:37:42them.
00:37:45He does.
00:37:46And that's just not
00:37:47Thanksgiving.
00:37:48French fries anytime.
00:37:49He's the expert on French fries.
00:37:51He puts chili on them.
00:37:52He says ketchup.
00:37:53All kinds of combinations.
00:37:55325-pound Nate Newton.
00:37:57He once was over 400.
00:37:59Yeah.
00:38:00He calls French fries the
00:38:01universal food.
00:38:02And when we talk about
00:38:03Thanksgiving, he said, man, when
00:38:05I grew up, we called it
00:38:06grubbin'.
00:38:07And I said, what do you mean?
00:38:08He said, we went from house to
00:38:09house on Thanksgiving.
00:38:11It wasn't one table.
00:38:12It was five different houses we
00:38:14had Thanksgiving.
00:38:15He's ready to go right after the
00:38:16game today.
00:38:17First down, Dallas trailing
00:38:187-0 as we open the second
00:38:20quarter.
00:38:21Aikman well protected and dumps
00:38:23it off to Smith.
00:38:24And Smith hit immediately no
00:38:26fouls.
00:38:27And he's out of the game.
00:38:29Nate Newton called
00:38:31Thanksgiving dinner the
00:38:33Newton's pregame meal for
00:38:35Christmas.
00:38:38He's delightful.
00:38:39The kitchen.
00:38:40What a nickname.
00:38:41The kitchen.
00:38:42He's been all over that
00:38:43offensive line.
00:38:44At one time was an offensive
00:38:45tackle.
00:38:46Now a guard.
00:38:47He carries some ballast around
00:38:50him, but he's one of the
00:38:51strongest guys up front you're
00:38:53ever going to find.
00:38:54Well, that's just a
00:38:55second.
00:38:58Second at 11.
00:39:01Johnson.
00:39:02And Johnson met by Jarvis
00:39:04Williams.
00:39:05And Williams, a safety man,
00:39:06comes up to make his stop at the
00:39:08line of scrimmage.
00:39:09So they're trying to go to the
00:39:11bigger backs on this slick
00:39:13footing.
00:39:14But not much there.
00:39:15But, Dick, the only problem is
00:39:17what they're doing is they're
00:39:18getting Johnson going sideline
00:39:20to sideline as you see the
00:39:22live while they're playing at
00:39:23one end.
00:39:24One guard stripes at the other.
00:39:25Yeah.
00:39:26What Dallas has to do is
00:39:27Johnson is open, but they've
00:39:28got to run the flare route where
00:39:29he's going up the field.
00:39:31Everything he's catching,
00:39:32Dick, he's going to the
00:39:33sideline.
00:39:34Even a little man-man hitting
00:39:35you can get you off.
00:39:36Absolutely.
00:39:37Neutralize all the sides he
00:39:38has.
00:39:39Third down, closer to 12.
00:39:43Aikman looking for something
00:39:44big.
00:39:45Goes for Irvin.
00:39:46Knocked away at the last minute
00:39:48by Troy Vincent.
00:39:50Vincent appeared to be beaten,
00:39:52but on the icy conditions you
00:39:54could see Irvin trying to
00:39:55gather his feet underneath him
00:39:57and that allowed Vincent to
00:39:58duck in with the right hand.
00:39:59This is very close.
00:40:00And Vincent does get that hand
00:40:01just in there to knock it away.
00:40:02You can see Michael Irvin's
00:40:04hands there ready to receive the
00:40:05football.
00:40:06Excellent job.
00:40:07Contact again at the break.
00:40:08Hand up to the face mask just
00:40:09to give Vincent a little help.
00:40:11Vincent has learned quickly how
00:40:13to play this spot in the NFL.
00:40:16So on fourth down and a dozen,
00:40:20Cowboys noting Stojanovic's
00:40:22problems with a field goal try
00:40:24from about this area.
00:40:25Go for it.
00:40:27No punt.
00:40:30Aikman down the middle.
00:40:32Oh, incomplete as Irvin was
00:40:34triple teamed and Troy Vincent
00:40:36and Louis Oliver hit him
00:40:38simultaneously.
00:40:40Miami takes over on downs.
00:40:43Now, Dick, I think Jimmy Johnson
00:40:45learned something from Miami
00:40:46with their field goal attempt.
00:40:48He says, hey, I'm not going to
00:40:50try a field goal here.
00:40:51Let's go with the best thing we
00:40:53can do here.
00:40:54Watch this hit by Oliver who,
00:40:55when drafted, said, I'm not here
00:40:57to cover anybody.
00:40:58I'm here to loosen fillings.
00:41:00That'll be a headline game on
00:41:08Sunday.
00:41:09You'll see it here on NBC.
00:41:10And you can bet that Houston
00:41:11here is watching today as Miami
00:41:14takes on the Dallas Cowboys.
00:41:17And any victory by those teams
00:41:18up in the higher echelon, the
00:41:20others rooting against them,
00:41:21home field obviously so important
00:41:23heading toward the playoffs.
00:41:26Well, it appears pass is the
00:41:28call today on this field.
00:41:31And it's worked.
00:41:32I mean, even though Louis Oliver
00:41:34knocked away that fourth down
00:41:35attempt there by Troy Aikman,
00:41:37there are receivers open.
00:41:39One of the things that happens
00:41:40here is the linebackers can't get
00:41:42back underneath coverage.
00:41:47Second down and eight.
00:41:50At about the 34 of Miami,
00:41:52DeBerg a cookie incomplete off
00:41:54the fingertips of Mark Ingram.
00:41:56Larry Brown there to cover.
00:42:01NFL Live on Sunday to kick off
00:42:04a good lineup of action that
00:42:06will be culminated by that
00:42:08Kansas City-Buffalo game.
00:42:10And you'll take a look at that
00:42:12Buffalo-Bills defense that has
00:42:14helped carry Marv Levy's club to
00:42:16three consecutive Super Bowls.
00:42:18Cornelius Bennett, Bruce Smith,
00:42:19Jets, New England, Raiders,
00:42:20Cincinnati, Cleveland, Atlanta,
00:42:22early Buffalo, Kansas City,
00:42:23Denver, Seattle, the late game.
00:42:26DeBerg is five for nine.
00:42:28Third down, eight.
00:42:31Down the middle, Ingram.
00:42:33Still out of speed and out to
00:42:35foot race.
00:42:36Ingram caught from behind at the
00:42:3730-yard line by Darren Woodson.
00:42:4136-yard play, and Ingram
00:42:43continues to come up with a big
00:42:45yardage catch for Miami.
00:42:47Dick Dallas had their 47 defense
00:42:49in, seven defensive backs.
00:42:51You see Bill Bates, number 40,
00:42:52threatening the blitz.
00:42:53Watch the zip DeBerg puts on it.
00:42:56And then Everett and Brown
00:42:59missed the tackle.
00:43:00Washington has to finally run
00:43:02them down.
00:43:03These are big Miami receivers,
00:43:04just like Dallas' receivers, and
00:43:07a huge pickup for Miami.
00:43:09Officially 35 yards.
00:43:1212 minutes left in the first
00:43:13half.
00:43:147-0.
00:43:15And Byers' second carry after
00:43:16that 77-yard touchdown run in the
00:43:19opening quarter gets about two
00:43:21yards this time.
00:43:23You got to think that a guy like
00:43:25Steve DeBerg on a field like
00:43:28this and the years of experience
00:43:30pays such a huge dividend.
00:43:32I mean, they cut the offense
00:43:34down for DeBerg, but he cuts it
00:43:36down even more.
00:43:38He knows how to plan his stuff
00:43:39because of all the years he's
00:43:40been in the league.
00:43:43Often, though, with warm-weather
00:43:45teams, Tampa Bay, San Francisco,
00:43:47now Miami.
00:43:4917.
00:43:51His number 17 years in the league
00:43:53for DeBerg.
00:43:55Good play-action pace.
00:43:57Throw down the middle.
00:43:58Incomplete.
00:43:59Keith Jackson was the target.
00:44:01Charles Haley putting the punch
00:44:02on DeBerg.
00:44:04He was held by Norton, too.
00:44:08Keith Jackson was.
00:44:10Jackson was running the crossing
00:44:12pattern.
00:44:13He's still complaining.
00:44:15And Norton got a hold of him as
00:44:17he's running the crossing
00:44:19pattern, and he was the intended
00:44:21receiver.
00:44:22Top of the screen.
00:44:23He gets the release.
00:44:24Now watch.
00:44:25Norton's on him.
00:44:26He got a hold of his shirt there
00:44:27in the back.
00:44:28Got away with it.
00:44:31From the Dallas 28-yard line,
00:44:34it's third down, along seventh.
00:44:38Joe Bates, extra defensive back
00:44:40in.
00:44:41DeBerg underneath.
00:44:42Intercepted by Bates.
00:44:43Right into Bates' arms, and the
00:44:45veteran from Tennessee gets
00:44:47Dallas the ball.
00:44:57Jerry Kirby, the fullback,
00:44:59didn't even turn around.
00:45:01Watch what happens.
00:45:02He's the intended receiver.
00:45:03He never even looks back to
00:45:05DeBerg.
00:45:06He's just walking through the
00:45:07line of scrimmage.
00:45:09Gets off his helmet, and Bill
00:45:11Bates comes up with the
00:45:12interception.
00:45:14The 13th of his career, a man
00:45:16who was out all last year with a
00:45:18severe knee injury.
00:45:21Ice on the cranberries in Dallas
00:45:23today.
00:45:24Good news is it's a lighter
00:45:26sleet at the moment, as Dallas
00:45:28takes over at the 26 on the
00:45:30interception by Bates.
00:45:31And Emmett Smith breaking
00:45:32tackles, but a flag is down as
00:45:34he's out close to the 35-yard
00:45:36line.
00:45:37Louis Oliver, the stop.
00:45:40Back to DeBerg after the
00:45:42interception to the sidelines.
00:45:44He's yelling at Jerry Kirby.
00:45:46First, DeBerg is the new kid on
00:45:48the block, and at the end of
00:45:49this walk, look who comes up to
00:45:51him.
00:45:52He's not happy, but out of the
00:45:55way, Marino says, wait, wait,
00:45:57wait.
00:45:58Cool down.
00:45:59Now, did you ever think you'd
00:46:00see Dan Marino trying to cool
00:46:01somebody down?
00:46:03And DeBerg at 39 showing his
00:46:05leadership, didn't want that to
00:46:07go.
00:46:08Now, of course, all smiles.
00:46:10He said, how can you not be
00:46:12happy?
00:46:13The one moment you think your
00:46:14football career is over, the next
00:46:16moment you're playing for a team
00:46:17that's talking about going to
00:46:18the Super Bowl.
00:46:19And look at Marino in there.
00:46:21Penalty was against Dallas,
00:46:22illegal motion, nullifying a
00:46:24good run by Smith, and it takes
00:46:26it back to the 22-yard line.
00:46:30Aikman looking for Irvin.
00:46:33He's down underneath.
00:46:35He goes to the tight end,
00:46:37Novacek, a Novacek short game
00:46:40nailed at the 25 by Brian Cox.
00:46:42Novacek, who has more catches in
00:46:45the 90s than any NFL tight end.
00:46:47That was his 219th.
00:46:50This guy comes out of Wyoming as
00:46:52a cowboy.
00:46:53He's acquired from Phoenix and
00:46:54is now a cowboy.
00:46:55And he's a real good catcher,
00:46:57Jackson is now a cowboy and is a
00:47:00real life cowboy trains and
00:47:02rides cutting horses.
00:47:04He thinks the only thing you can
00:47:05ride has nothing in the back but
00:47:07straw in it.
00:47:07I mean it's a pickup truck for
00:47:09life for Jake Novacek.
00:47:11Pride and joy of Gothenburg
00:47:13Nebraska where he owns a big
00:47:14spread that's Novacek in motion
00:47:17on second and twelve Smith and
00:47:20the and he's out of bounds into
00:47:23the arms of the Dolphins on the
00:47:25near sidelines at about the 28
00:47:27yard line be about third and
00:47:30eight.
00:47:31Dick to this point to this point
00:47:34that Troy Aikman has been very
00:47:35smart.
00:47:36He's had some opportunities to
00:47:37run here and has stayed in the
00:47:39pocket and found the outlet
00:47:41receiver.
00:47:42Now that's not something that
00:47:43Troy Aikman has ever been very
00:47:45good at.
00:47:45When the first guy's not there
00:47:47he likes to run out of that
00:47:48pocket and he's protecting that
00:47:50hamstring on her and doing a
00:47:52great job of it to this point.
00:47:54Harper to the right.
00:47:55Kevin Williams is now slotted
00:47:56left inside Michael Irvin and
00:48:00they're going to be wide open at
00:48:02Smith and Smith has the first
00:48:04down green gets him out of
00:48:05bounds at the 40 yard line 12
00:48:10yards on the pass play.
00:48:12So valuable so valuable.
00:48:17I mean I think his greatest
00:48:18attribute after his heart is the
00:48:21ability he shows at the end of
00:48:23this play.
00:48:23Just with the slightest little
00:48:25little makes the guy miss.
00:48:27Very seldom do you see Emmitt
00:48:29Smith really hammered when he
00:48:31carries the ball or catches it
00:48:32just under 10 minutes to go
00:48:34before the intermission.
00:48:35The Dolphins lead 7 nothing on a
00:48:3777 yard rumble by Keith Byers
00:48:40Smith chopped down as he gets to
00:48:44the 30 nine yard line make that
00:48:48the 44 yard line as we try to
00:48:50sort out the yard stripes Jeff
00:48:52Cross with a tackle and John
00:48:54Smith with the ball just play
00:48:57by injuries now putting some heat
00:49:00on that left hamstring and that's
00:49:02high.
00:49:03You don't like to see it of
00:49:04course coming back after that
00:49:06shoulder injury he's been out
00:49:07for quite a while.
00:49:08John wants to be out there every
00:49:10snap but he just can't stay
00:49:12healthy.
00:49:13Ninety three veteran Cliff Odom
00:49:16in Texas Arlington replaces him
00:49:24to near midfield.
00:49:26No Bumble Lincoln Coleman is a
00:49:30two hundred fifty pounder from
00:49:31Baylor and if you want a
00:49:32Thanksgiving story you're
00:49:34looking at a number of forty
00:49:35four this summer he was playing
00:49:37arena football for the Dallas
00:49:39Texans at five hundred a game a
00:49:41year ago he was a dock worker at
00:49:43Home Depot for 650 an hour and
00:49:45now he's making one hundred
00:49:46thousand and that is his first
00:49:48NFL career.
00:49:50He also played for the Dallas
00:49:51Colts a semi pro team where he
00:49:53made a $5 ticket in the play he's
00:49:58in there and gets it again a
00:49:59toss the ball and he is in a
00:50:01two hundred fifty pounds and
00:50:02using it well Lincoln Coleman a
00:50:06first down in Miami Territory in
00:50:09about the thirty five yard line
00:50:11that's got him done is dead is a
00:50:15pressman for the Dallas Morning
00:50:18News been there for years and
00:50:20years and years and I imagine
00:50:23he's been waiting for a long
00:50:24time to print his son's name in
00:50:26the paper and he gets his first
00:50:28two NFL carries as we've got a
00:50:29Miami Dolphin down on the
00:50:31sideline and pick up who it is
00:50:44we'll wait might be Jarvis
00:50:47Williams we see that and it does
00:50:52look like it's going to be
00:50:53Jarvis Williams 26 so there'll
00:50:57be a timeout as they attend to
00:50:59the safety man starting safety
00:51:01for the Dolphins seven nothing
00:51:03Miami second quarter word from
00:51:09the sidelines not a serious
00:51:10entry to Jarvis Williams he
00:51:11should return first down at the
00:51:13thirty six Dallas curling seven
00:51:15nothing second quarter here at
00:51:17Lincoln Coleman again Lincoln
00:51:19Coleman he said when he was one
00:51:21year old his grandfather gave
00:51:22him a Dallas Cowboy helmet he
00:51:24said maybe that was destiny you
00:51:26talk about a dream coming
00:51:28through from semi pro to arena
00:51:30ball to the NFL for a guy who
00:51:32didn't finish his work at Baylor
00:51:34yeah they couldn't wipe the
00:51:36smile off this kid's face with a
00:51:37ball peen hammer ever since he
00:51:39walked into that Dallas Cowboys
00:51:41training camp started running
00:51:42over people he knew he was home
00:51:45almost 10 yards on that carry
00:51:47and he has twenty nine yards
00:51:48that's more than Emmitt Smith
00:51:49who has twenty four and nine
00:51:51carries he's wearing a very
00:51:52famous number here forty four
00:51:55Robert Newhouse the big
00:51:57fullback back in the 70s when
00:51:58Roger Starbuck was the
00:51:59quarterback he knew that he said
00:52:03he'd met Robert Newhouse and
00:52:04Robert said you take good care
00:52:06of that twin fours a little
00:52:08short of the first down the
00:52:10second down and short down with
00:52:14the play and Jimmy Johnson has
00:52:15shown that he's not averse to a
00:52:18little trickery.
00:52:19Yeah and he's also already
00:52:20established to us that he's not
00:52:21going to try field goals of this
00:52:22length.
00:52:23I mean I don't know at what
00:52:24point he'll try one here but
00:52:27trailing seven to nothing.
00:52:28You think he's almost in four
00:52:30down area seven fifty four
00:52:34remaining in this first half.
00:52:36You're just joining us then
00:52:38tied up with the feast on this
00:52:40Thanksgiving holiday earlier.
00:52:43Dave Wannstedt Chicago Bears
00:52:45Dave Wannstedt the former
00:52:46defensive coordinator for Jimmy
00:52:48Johnson Super Bowl team
00:52:49defeating the Lions 10 to 6 at
00:52:52Pontiac and a lot of respect.
00:53:09I think he also realizes what
00:53:11he's doing here.
00:53:12He's doing what he's doing.
00:53:13He's doing what he's doing.
00:53:14He protects the football here
00:53:16both hands on it.
00:53:18Jimmy Johnson knows that he
00:53:20knows that if he coughs it up
00:53:21he's going to be out of the
00:53:22game.
00:53:23Here's a guy who when he played
00:53:24in the arena league bounced off
00:53:26he bounced off all kinds of
00:53:29walls and brought the ball out
00:53:30of the net.
00:53:32Just like this.
00:53:32This is easy averaging nine a
00:53:36from the 20.
00:53:38Now Aikman Lincoln Coleman has
00:53:49changed the coverage of the
00:53:50Miami Dolphins here.
00:53:51Linebackers watch how they hold
00:53:53at the line of scrimmage.
00:53:54Fifty one ninety three.
00:53:56Bam.
00:53:56Nice lane for Troy Aikman to
00:53:58throw to Irvin on the outside.
00:54:00Coleman has had a very big
00:54:01effect.
00:54:03Again the outside released by
00:54:05squares himself off over his
00:54:07feet.
00:54:08That's not bad coverage at all.
00:54:11The four consecutive runs by the
00:54:13rookie Lincoln Coleman and then
00:54:15the pastor from the nine person
00:54:17goal.
00:54:20Coleman tripped up as he gets to
00:54:21the seven yard line back.
00:54:23There was the trainer of the
00:54:24Dallas Cowboys that saw him
00:54:26first.
00:54:27He was just taking a day off and
00:54:28watching an arena ball.
00:54:29Yeah.
00:54:30Kevin O'Neill was sitting in his
00:54:30house and he had the TV on and
00:54:32they were running this.
00:54:32What is this stuff.
00:54:33And he was watching the arena
00:54:35football and Coleman was not
00:54:37only playing fullback but you
00:54:39had to play both ways.
00:54:40So he was also a linebacker and
00:54:42he talked to one of the guys.
00:54:43Just look at this kid.
00:54:45He's close to 250 which made him
00:54:47one of the biggest guys on the
00:54:48field.
00:54:49He got his opportunity and has
00:54:50made the best of it.
00:54:52He matriculated at Notre Dame
00:54:54didn't work there went to Baylor
00:54:55and played just barely didn't
00:54:57finish.
00:55:04To bring him down it'll be third
00:55:06and goal from the four.
00:55:07Chuck Klingbeil on the nose
00:55:09number ninety nine the first man
00:55:11to hit it.
00:55:12I don't think you're going to
00:55:13see a lot of moves and that's
00:55:15from Lincoln Coleman.
00:55:16He told us I'm a smash mouth
00:55:18kind of runner as he leaves.
00:55:26Cowboy fans have a new hero and
00:55:28Lincoln Coleman they bring in an
00:55:33wide receiver Kevin Williams
00:55:35with Emmett Smith and Aikman
00:55:39will spend a time on 524 left in
00:55:45the half four yards from a tie.
00:55:47The Dallas Cowboys I'm Chuck
00:55:51Klingbeil Miami Dolphins.
00:55:52Happy Thanksgiving everybody up
00:55:54in the UP the upper peninsula of
00:55:57Michigan Houghton and he told us
00:56:00when he was a freshman in high
00:56:01school he saw his first
00:56:02Thanksgiving Day game in person
00:56:04at Pontiac saw the Lions his
00:56:05uncle Al put him down there.
00:56:07So he now playing in his first
00:56:08Thanksgiving Day game.
00:56:09Has Uncle Al here.
00:56:11Blow him in to watch him play
00:56:12third and go at the ball.
00:56:16Aikman.
00:56:32He's gonna have to position
00:56:33themselves to tie.
00:56:42I started at Dallas in 26.
00:56:45That was very well done by the
00:56:47Dallas Cowboys.
00:56:50Seventy four yards and 12 plays
00:56:55and nothing automatic about the
00:56:57extra point as veteran Eddie
00:56:59Murray comes in to kick Nova
00:57:02and the game is even you can see
00:57:12Aikman hesitate here to throw it.
00:57:14He's waiting for the hand
00:57:15checking to get done throws it
00:57:17underneath the arm of a Miami
00:57:19Dolphin and Kevin Williams makes
00:57:20the catch low.
00:57:21JB Brown was the man in coverage
00:57:24and watch what happens here.
00:57:26It looks like Williams doesn't
00:57:28mind the contact then slips in
00:57:30pulls away.
00:57:30Aikman does a great job of
00:57:32hanging on to that thing and
00:57:33that makes the completion.
00:57:38Emmitt Smith a surprise starter
00:57:41for the Cowboys considering the
00:57:43seriousness of his injury there
00:57:44to help applaud the rookie Kevin
00:57:47Williams.
00:57:48Some thought too small at five
00:57:49nine second round pick Jimmy
00:57:52Johnson remembers him well he
00:57:53recruited in his second catch to
00:57:57go a second two runs for
00:57:59touchdown so he could have four
00:58:01scorers speaking of four
00:58:04scorers it was a Lincoln they
00:58:06got him there.
00:58:08Do you figure something out
00:58:10before this happened.
00:58:11It was over.
00:58:12It's just the accident.
00:58:13Wait seven seven.
00:58:15He says look at it.
00:58:15You see me standing there
00:58:16standing on Thanksgiving Day.
00:58:19He got in the game last week and
00:58:21he said no one knew it.
00:58:22I came in and I actually was in
00:58:23my first NFL game and he said
00:58:26must have been in commercial
00:58:28because none of my family saw
00:58:29me.
00:58:30He's telling all of them they'll
00:58:31go home and tell all the boys
00:58:32and the hood.
00:58:33Yeah.
00:58:34And when you're tight we're
00:58:34buddy we stand on the sideline
00:58:36to get all the time.
00:58:37So it's a new game with five
00:58:39nineteen left in the hand.
00:58:41OJ McDuffie and Mike Williams
00:58:44stand at the 10 yard line as
00:58:46Eddie Murray tries to kick some
00:58:47of the ice out of his cleats and
00:58:49here we go.
00:58:57It's a one off for the great
00:58:59baby in a tight end and baby
00:59:01out of bounds at about the 35
00:59:05yard line.
00:59:06James Washington with a tackle.
00:59:08So now Sunday talk about
00:59:10nostalgia.
00:59:11How about Finance tonight on NBC.
00:59:14Remember that thing.
00:59:16Real end the highlights of 14
00:59:18years of Ananta see the stars
00:59:19that were on the show.
00:59:20If you love Bonanza this is a one
00:59:22hour special you won't want to
00:59:23miss.
00:59:24And after an all new sequence
00:59:25It's an all new Bonanza movie more than 20 years later the legend lives again Michael Landon Jr.
00:59:31Dirk Blocker starring Bonanza the Return Sunday on NBC.
00:59:36Yes sir, the Cowboys.
00:59:38It is the 37-yard line as the bird goes to work and hands off to Higgs.
00:59:44And Higgs gets about two, maybe three.
00:59:47Dixon Edwards from Michigan State and Big Cat Leon Lepp from Emporia State of Kansas on the tackle.
00:59:54Probably a good idea for Dallas, both these teams actually to get the biggest defensive lineman they can up there in front.
01:00:01With the bad footing here, Leon Lepp's a hard guy to shove around.
01:00:07Easy to catch though.
01:00:08Leon Lepp, that's right.
01:00:10For the rest of his life.
01:00:12His name and that of Don Beebe will be permanently linked.
01:00:16Caught in the Super Bowl.
01:00:19The bird on second and seven.
01:00:21Goes to a tight end.
01:00:22Jackson right at the stick.
01:00:23Close to a first down.
01:00:25Darren Woodson.
01:00:26Ken Norton with the stop.
01:00:30The Cowboys keep allowing Jackson off the line of scrimmage.
01:00:33Top of the screen.
01:00:35That's like a three-yard pattern.
01:00:36Norton comes from the outside.
01:00:38I think the Dolphins can do that all day.
01:00:41And the Cowboys have done it with Darrell Johnston.
01:00:45These are going to be very active receivers.
01:00:47My suggestion is hold that tight end up a little bit.
01:00:49You're not going to pressure the quarterback that much today.
01:00:57They are going to be just shy of the first down.
01:01:00Third and inches.
01:01:01You want to talk about a tough guy.
01:01:03How about Ken Norton?
01:01:04We all know his dad, the former heavyweight champion.
01:01:06Tough man.
01:01:07Ken Norton is playing the rest of the year with a bicep muscle.
01:01:11The tendon that attaches near the elbow totally severed.
01:01:14So he has a special device on his arm so he can't lift his arm.
01:01:17It requires surgery.
01:01:19He said, I'll have it after the year.
01:01:20He's also playing a new spot.
01:01:22Last year he was an outside linebacker.
01:01:25This year he's an inside linebacker and doesn't complain a bit.
01:01:28And what a hit he made in the Super Bowl.
01:01:30That was the knockout punch on the goal line.
01:01:32Kenneth Davis.
01:01:39At the 47-yard line.
01:01:42It's hit into the backfield by Leon Lett.
01:01:58Dickey sitting just off the shoulder of the center.
01:02:01You're going to see it happen.
01:02:02And he gets across the center's head.
01:02:04Dellenbach is the center.
01:02:06And Leon Lett, a big, strong guy.
01:02:10Dellenbach can't even slow him down.
01:02:12Dale Hatcher, the veteran from Clemson, will punt for the first time in this half.
01:02:17Kevin Williams, who just scored the touchdown, inside the Dallas 20.
01:02:24Good snap.
01:02:26Hatcher, short kick.
01:02:28Williams, fair catch.
01:02:29A back twister at the 22-yard line.
01:02:32A 33-yard punt.
01:02:35Well, Leon Lett and the defense doing their job.
01:02:38Stopping Miami on third and inches.
01:02:41And now an illegal procedure call against Miami.
01:02:44But a short kick, I guess Dallas will take it right where it is.
01:02:48Yeah, I think also when you can catch it cleanly.
01:02:50Illegal formation by the kicking team.
01:02:52The right side of the line was too far off the line of scrimmage.
01:02:55The penalty is declined.
01:02:57First down.
01:02:59NFL Live with us live here at halftime.
01:03:03And the Domino Pizza halftime report will feature the smiling owner of the Dallas Cowboys, Jerry Jones.
01:03:11Not smiling so much in that commercial that debuts on our Thanksgiving Day telecast.
01:03:16And there they are getting ready for work.
01:03:18Hello, Mike Ditka.
01:03:19I want you to meet Bob Trumpy someday.
01:03:21You're over on the other side of the stadium.
01:03:22I'm going to get you two guys together.
01:03:26I've been a big fan of his my entire life.
01:03:28Raised in Illinois.
01:03:30Watched Ditka play tight end for the Chicago Bears in Wrigley Field.
01:03:33It would be my lifelong dream come true.
01:03:39From the 23.
01:03:41Play action Aikman.
01:03:43Something they don't want him to do and he slides down immediately.
01:03:47That's instinct taking over.
01:03:49Yeah, that was to be handed off to Emmett Smith.
01:03:51He could not get the ball to him and he keeps it.
01:03:54Emmett held out.
01:03:55He wasn't there.
01:03:56Yeah, watch Emmett Smith when Aikman goes to hand him this ball.
01:03:59Emmett has bent over from slipping.
01:04:01And watch how little Aikman can run.
01:04:03He's done a great job to stay in this game and throw the ball as well as he has until now.
01:04:10And when Emmett Smith slips in, it's out to lunch.
01:04:15Very smart by Aikman.
01:04:17And he gained a couple of yards.
01:04:19So it'll be second and a long eight.
01:04:25Aikman has thrown the ball 21 times.
01:04:2714 receptions.
01:04:29Johnston with a move.
01:04:31Right open.
01:04:32A little straight ahead.
01:04:34And he's out.
01:04:35Close to midfield.
01:04:36Out of bounds at the 45.
01:04:38Dallas 45.
01:04:39Jarvis Williams clip on him with a tackle.
01:04:41A 20-yard play.
01:04:47Well, it's been open all day.
01:04:48You're going to see these two lock up.
01:04:50He comes out here.
01:04:51When Johnston comes out of the backfield, if he misses,
01:04:53if he just gets away from one tackler, that's all it takes.
01:04:57The cornerback rotates up.
01:04:58And again, it's the same coverage and it's the same pattern
01:05:01that Johnston catches out in the flat.
01:05:03This time he runs right by the corner for a big game.
01:05:067-7 tie.
01:05:07215 left in the half.
01:05:09Emmett.
01:05:11Look at the power of Emmett Smith.
01:05:13He was hit right at the line of scrimmage and gains five yards
01:05:16before Chuck Klingbeil can wrap his 295 pounds around him.
01:05:21And we're at the two-minute timeout.
01:05:24The Dolphins and the Cowboys even at seven.
01:05:30Michael Irvin, one of 17, Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
01:05:33He said 30-some-odd people, his people he said here,
01:05:36came over in vans, four or five vans,
01:05:38took them out to a fancy restaurant in Dallas,
01:05:41fed them all the biggest lobster they could find.
01:05:43And when the check came, $2,000.
01:05:45And he was reaching in looking for help.
01:05:47And he looked all around the table, his relatives,
01:05:49and what did he get?
01:05:51Great lobster, Michael.
01:05:53Nobody fainted, died, but Michael.
01:05:56Irvin tells it much better.
01:05:57Yes, he does.
01:05:58I can be sure.
01:05:59His family drove 25 hours to be here
01:06:02for this Thanksgiving Day game.
01:06:05Irvin, who has 60 catches for the season to lead the Cowboys.
01:06:10Second down and five.
01:06:12Aikman skids to a stop and then throws long.
01:06:16Has a man, but it's almost intercepted by Louis Oliver.
01:06:24Michael Irvin was the intended receiver.
01:06:27Again, they're able to get their receivers down the field,
01:06:31outside this zone coverage of Miami.
01:06:33And Oliver there, actually, he should have made the interception.
01:06:38J.B. Brown, let's look at the job that Irvin did.
01:06:41As he went by, knocked the arm of the defender away.
01:06:44Oliver playing that double zone there to knock it away for.
01:06:47He should have had an interception.
01:06:49That would have been a big play for him.
01:06:50So it's 35 for Dallas.
01:06:52They're 6 for 10 today.
