00:00Welcome to Mojo Plays, and today we're taking a look at the 20 greatest games ever made
00:15for the PlayStation Portable.
00:25Before we begin, we publish new videos all week long, so be sure to subscribe to Mojo
00:29Plays and ring the bell to be notified about our latest videos.
00:33Star Wars Battlefront Renegade Squadron and Star Wars Battlefront Elite Squadron
00:49We know that these are two separate titles, we're merely putting them together because
00:53you could go with either game.
00:55Both Renegade and Elite Squadron boast excellent campaigns, the former focusing on events leading
01:00up to the Battle of Endor, while the latter tells a story about a clone trooper as he
01:05experiences the events of Revenge of the Sith all the way up to Return of the Jedi.
01:10These two campaigns alone gave us plenty of reasons to pick them both up.
01:22Of course, you can also spend countless hours playing Galactic Conquest.
01:26Speaking of, Elite Modified Conquest, in a way where two players could fight against
01:31each other using the same PSP, we just don't see that level of innovation anymore.
01:45Ridge Racer 2
01:57No this was not a port of the PS1 game Ridge Racer 2.
02:01Namco's once thriving racing series did give the PSP its own small lineup of Ridge
02:06Racer titles.
02:07Surprisingly, Ridge Racer 2 came packing in a ton of options for players.
02:20Not only could you race on 21 brand new tracks, you could also visit tracks from the previous
02:25game and the games that came before that.
02:28You also had a meaty selection of more than 60 cars to race across those courses.
02:34In other words, racing game fans were getting a lot of bang for their buck with this one.
02:45Assassin's Creed Bloodlines
02:55We won't lie, this is probably one of the weirdest games any AC fan could possibly play.
03:01Bloodlines removes some key mechanics such as stealth and eagle vision, but the big reason
03:06to play Bloodlines is more in its technical fidelity.
03:09Considering the limitations of the PSP, it's kind of astounding how Ubisoft managed to
03:14develop a game of this size, between its world and visual details.
03:25We aren't saying this is an absolute must-play and it's the greatest thing since sliced
03:29bread, but if you want to see a game push to utilize every ounce of its power, Bloodlines
03:35is definitely one of those titles.
03:37For better or worse, depending on your expectations.
03:46Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep
03:57Very rarely does a handheld game ever outshine its home console brethren, and in the case
04:02of Kingdom Hearts, Birth by Sleep certainly achieved that.
04:06In a general sense, it managed to refine the controls to such a degree that simply jumping
04:11around felt great.
04:19As an evolution in the series, the new mechanics like dimension link and focus worked surprisingly
04:25well in how they gave you new abilities to mess around with and defeat the Heartless
04:29with.
04:30Sure, the load times were… less than tolerable, but spend just an hour with this and you'll
04:37want to keep playing.
04:48Soul Calibur Broken Destiny
04:58Most people probably picked this up for the sole fact that Kratos was the token guest
05:02character for this installment.
05:04However, there was more to Broken Destiny than watching the Ghost of Sparta take on
05:08sexy ninja girls, goliaths with giant axes, and sentient cursed swords.
05:23The gauntlet campaign helped us hone in our skills in the game's mechanics, while the
05:27trials modes challenged us in chaining attacks, effectively countering, and simply enduring
05:32consecutive fights.
05:34There was a lot of focus here on self-improvement and training to take on harder ladders and
05:38ready ourselves for any other players itching for a fight.
05:41It was like having your own personal dojo in your pocket.
05:52Final Fantasy Tactics The War of the Lions
06:04Look we know that this was just an altered version of the original Final Fantasy Tactics,
06:09but that shouldn't dismiss it from a list like this.
06:10Would you rather us champion Dissidia?
06:13War of the Lions actually managed to improve the game thanks to the technical advancements
06:17of the PSP.
06:19Cutscenes looked better with the handheld's aspect ratio, and we even got multiplayer
06:23functionality for both PvP and co-op game modes.
06:33It was essentially the version of Final Fantasy Tactics we had always wanted, and that goes
06:38without mentioning some of the new characters and jobs that were added into this version.
06:49Killzone Liberation
07:01It could be hard to sell hardcore fans on a spinoff like Killzone Liberation.
07:05How do you expect FPS players to suddenly be open to a top-down shooter, especially
07:10when a handheld iteration would be less technically impressive than its home console counterpart?
07:16Well developer Guerrilla Games found their own path in achieving that.
07:28Despite the different perspective, you still had to employ the cover shooter tactics of
07:33the main Killzone games and use the environment to your advantage.
07:36Liberation also featured a fun challenge mode that would earn you new stages as you progressed
07:41in the story, and beating those stages would let you unlock more weapons and modifiers
07:46to assist you in the main campaign.
07:48If you haven't checked it out on PS5 already, you absolutely should.
07:59Twisted Metal
08:08Every fan has their own favorite entry in the franchise, but if you were clamoring for
08:11a Twisted Metal that was more in line with TM2, you probably picked up Head On.
08:16On top of bringing back the comic book aesthetic in its cutscenes and character profiles, Head
08:21On also got a little more arcadey in its general style, with hidden teleporters, vehicle upgrades,
08:27and more arena-style level design.
08:37Even the soundtrack had some great songs that sounded solid through the PSP speakers.
08:42We gotta be honest though, the PS2 users got a better version that came with a bunch of
08:46extra goodies.
08:47Still, Head On's initial release is still a banger.
09:00Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection
09:09Tekken 5 was already an incredible title for PlayStation 2 owners to duke it out with their
09:13friends.
09:14Even if there were some problems in the game balance.
09:17Looking at you, Steve, with your nonsense infinite stun combo.
09:21In addition to tweaking the balance, Dark Resurrection came with more bells and whistles
09:25to justify a second purchase.
09:31Firstly, you had three new fighters, Dragunov, Armor King 2, and everyone's favorite French
09:41tea enthusiast, Lily.
09:43Secondly, it came with a handful of new game modes like Ghost Battles, Gold Rush, and Tekken
09:49Bowl.
09:50Our only gripe is how some stages got visual changes and different songs from the PS2 version.
09:56Even so, Dark Resurrection was one of the greatest titles to ever grace our PlayStation
10:01portables.
10:12Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker
10:20Peace Walker was one of those games that was so tremendous in quality that it's a crying
10:25shame how little it sold at launch.
10:27And we have to wonder why.
10:29After all, this was one of the best looking games the PlayStation Portable ever saw in
10:34its lifespan.
10:42On top of that, you had MGS fans raving about how this was the best story in the entire
10:47franchise.
10:48Then, there were the folks who were simply losing their minds over the crossover with
10:53Monster Hunter.
10:54So what the hell?
10:55Why didn't this sell like hotcakes?
10:58Some say it's because of the Nintendo DS's popularity, which was trumping over the PSP.
11:04Others say it was because the PSP was just old news.
11:07At the end of the day, it's a mystery to everyone, and you should go play it for yourself.
11:20Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy
11:31What the hell title is that?
11:32Yes, we do have Dissidia Final Fantasy NT on PlayStation 4 and PC, but there are two
11:37problems with it.
11:39One, microtransactions.
11:40There's a ton of them.
11:42And it sucks.
11:43And two, support has ceased as of 2020, so there's no more new content, no more nothing,
11:48it is what it is.
11:50The original Dissidia remains supreme in the series for the simple fact that it didn't
11:54hold content hostage.
11:56On top of that, it was truly a unique take on a Final Fantasy fighting game, combining
12:00the format of arena fighters with RPG elements.
12:03But what has us crawling back to Dissidia 012?
12:06Well, we'll keep it short here.
12:09It's the expanded roster of characters.
12:11That's really what we love about this game more than the original.
12:15Plus, Tifa isn't trapped behind a paywall.
12:18So there's that.
12:19Do we look like sidesteppers?
12:22Your little game ends here, kids.
12:24What, are you crazy?
12:26Loco Roco
12:35If you're ever feeling down, might we prescribe to you a few cc's of Loco Roco?
12:41This tilt-and-tumble title was just constant cuteness wrapped up in a digital bundle of
12:46joy.
12:47Roll your Loco Roco around and grow or shrink to navigate the level and rescue all of your
12:52fellow companions.
12:54Between its bright colors and upbeat score, it's simply impossible to have a bad time
12:59when playing this classic.
13:01And the best part, all three games in the franchise, the remasters of the original Loco
13:06Roco, Loco Roco 2, and a port of Loco Roco Midnight Carnival, are all currently available
13:11to download on PlayStation 4 and 5.
13:13You should go and give these games a try.
13:17Pure joy, man, pure joy.
13:20Resistance Retribution
13:21Oh, how we long for the day Resistance returns so that Sony can quit acting like Call of
13:32Duty is the be-all end-all of FPS games.
13:36If we're not getting ports, remasters, or remakes of the original Resistance games,
13:41can we at the very least get Retribution?
13:44Sure, it's the black sheep of the franchise with its third-person camera, but it presented
13:50a different kind of experience compared to the explosive PS3 games.
13:54The health system made it feel a bit more arcade-y, the cover system was streamlined
13:58a bit by removing the lack of requiring an input, and the multiplayer was just as fun
14:03as the main games.
14:04Also, big shoutout to the checkpoint system, that's one overlooked thing with design
14:09these days.
14:11This is one of those rare cases where the checkpoint system makes the pacing perfect.
14:16Star Wars Lethal Alliance
14:24Most would flock to the PSP Battlefront games, Elite Squadron and Rogue Squadron, but we'd
14:31take Lethal Alliance for variety's sake.
14:34In all honesty, Lethal Alliance did not get as much love as it should have.
14:39Some might scoff at the idea of a Star Wars game that doesn't give you a lightsaber,
14:42but what it does without it is surprisingly fun and unique.
14:46Those familiar with the Kyle Katarn games or Star Wars Bounty Hunter will enjoy the
14:50basic shooting mechanics and unique story about a Twi'lek mercenary hired to help
14:55bring down the Empire.
14:57Perhaps the LucasArts of today will revisit the story by hiring a studio to remake it,
15:02or at the very least, remaster it or port it over to modern hardware.
15:06Fat Princess Fistful of Cake
15:14While this was simply a handheld port of the PS3 game Fat Princess, Fistful of Cake is
15:19more or less the superior version of the game, even if there were some visual sacrifices.
15:25For starters, Fistful of Cake offers up four new modes to the already addictive multiplayer
15:30in the form of Demolition, Jailbreak, Dilapidation, and Grim Reaper.
15:35These same modes would help expand the single-player campaign, as well as six exclusive maps.
15:40This port alone is why we would love to see one of the many Sony live-service games supposedly
15:46being developed become Fat Princess.
15:48It would just work as a free-to-play game, so long as you keep it tried and true to Fat
15:53Princess and not that dumb top-down hack-and-slash Fat Princess Adventures that was horrible
16:00and it wasn't Fat Princess.
16:02Pinball Heroes
16:08If you haven't heard of Pinball Heroes, we don't blame you, as this was a game you
16:12could only download through the PSP's PlayStation Store.
16:17Developed by Sony's San Diego studio, the studio behind MLB The Show, Pinball Heroes
16:22was a collection of pinball tables based on various PlayStation titles, including Fat
16:27Princess, Uncharted, Pain, Mod Nation Racers, High Velocity Bowling, Hot Shots Golf, Wipeout,
16:34and Motorstorm.
16:35Each table was crafted with a clear understanding of how each game played, featuring different
16:41mechanics and events that truly captured the spirit of each IP.
16:45If you want to experience this classic for yourself, it is available for $10 on PlayStation
16:50Store and includes both PS4 and PS5 ports.
16:55Pinball Heroes?
16:56Unsung hero of the PSP, honestly.
16:59Deserves way more love than it got.
17:06Patapon Series
17:12Speaking of PSP classics ported to modern hardware, the Patapon games have somewhat
17:16made their way to modern consoles.
17:18This trilogy of games task you with commanding a tribe of creatures, the Patapon, and help
17:23them survive an unforgiving world of ghastly creatures and environments.
17:27Simply input one of a few commands to the beat of their rhythm.
17:31It does get hectic between matching their beat to give commands and trying to keep them
17:35alive in general.
17:37And while you can play the first two games on PS4, Patapon 3 is sadly straighted on the
17:41PSP.
17:42For some reason.
17:43Let's hope we can get that fixed in the near future, and show everybody why Patapon
17:48is so great.
17:55God of War Ghost of Sparta
18:02The first God of War PSP game, Chains of Olympus, was a promising start to Kratos' life on
18:07Sony's handheld, but between the two, Ghost of Sparta is the favorite among fans.
18:13The way it expands on the lore and Kratos' story is just excellent.
18:17And while the supposed lack of innovation was railed on by critics, we have to ask,
18:23what exactly was there to innovate on, when the combat is already solid and it still holds
18:27up?
18:28It's God of War.
18:29As long as the combat rocks and tells a fantastic story, that's all we need.
18:33Ghost of Sparta rocks, okay?
18:35The Legend of Heroes Trails in the Sky
18:38Internet, we need to have a quick little powwow.
18:47I'm going completely off script here.
18:49Why does no one talk about Legend of Heroes?
18:53Why?
18:54I need someone to answer that to me right now, because I have been playing Trails in
18:57the Sky.
18:58I'm having a blast.
19:00And the fact that this franchise is constantly not getting a spotlight, why?
19:08It's been a ride for me, man.
19:10It has.
19:11The way that this game builds its world, the way it writes its characters, the way it keeps
19:16amping up the stakes, I'm infatuated, man.
19:20Go and get Legend of Heroes Trails in the Sky, alright?
19:22Or get any of the other ones.
19:25You want to talk about one of the most underrated JRPGs today?
19:27This is it, right here.
19:29Legend of Heroes Trails in the Sky.
19:37Our final entry, Daxter.
19:44Daxter is perhaps the poster child of stranded PSP games, as it is one of the very, very
19:50few Sony first party games to never be ported forward, backward, diagonal, slanted, anywhere.
19:58Taking place prior to the events of Jak 2, Daxter focuses on the Otzel in his time as
20:03an exterminator in Haven City.
20:06What follows is a brilliant action platformer featuring hilarious writing, tight combat,
20:12and an assortment of insanely fun dream sequences.
20:16We have all four of the PS2 Jak and Daxter games available on PS4.
20:20Why is Daxter left out in the cold?
20:29What's your favorite game you played on the PSP?
20:32Mine has been Daxter.
20:33I love Daphne, I love Pinball Heroes, but Daxter truly is great.
20:38You should go check it out on PS4 and PS5 if you haven't already.
20:42But did your favorite PSP game make our list?
20:44Let us know down in the comments, and be sure to subscribe to Mojo Plays for more great
20:48videos every day.
