00:11sparked quite a bit of a storm, whether they deserved it or not.

00:27Eve, Stellar Blade
00:34The entire discussion around Eve was weird, just super, super weird.
00:40Ever since its reveal in 2021, Stellar Blade was constantly getting overshadowed by its
00:46protagonist's attractive appearance.
00:48Eve is hot, yes, but some of the remarks floating around were, again, super, super weird.
00:56On one side, you had pundits and media outlets criticizing the developers for not making
01:01a game, quote, for modern audiences, end quote, even going so far as to say, quote, the developers
01:07have never seen a real woman, end quote.
01:10On the other side, you had people screaming and crying censorship when a few outfits had
01:15slight alterations before launch.
01:17Here's a novel idea, let's wait on judging until the game is out, is that really such
01:23a radical concept?
01:25Sure enough, all of this noise died down the second Stellar Blade was out, and it was all
01:30because a video game character was hot.
01:38The Princess, Fat Princess
01:45There is some strange revisionist history going around some media outlets when it comes
01:49to Fat Princess, to the point where the revising is now a controversy.
01:55Some outlets claim that people found Fat Princess to be a proponent of body shaming.
01:59No such incident ever occurred in 2008, or the years since Fat Princess launched, and
02:05no incident happened after the PSP port launched in 2010, nor when Fat Princess Adventures
02:11launched in 2015.
02:13If anything, those who played Fat Princess have championed the game for its humor, art
02:19style, and general fairytale vibe.
02:21Body shaming does still happen in this day and age, but to out-fat Princess as if it
02:26promotes body shaming feels like there is some seriously misguided anger on display.
02:36Quiet Metal Gear Solid V The Phantom Pain
02:46Long before EVE triggered journalists and basement dwellers, Quiet practically set the
02:51world on fire for some odd reasons herself.
02:54Once again, the topic was, is this video game character too hot and therefore sexualized?
03:00There are a few moments in MGSV where Quiet is arguably sexualized, and focusing on it
03:07can say something either about Snake, the player, or both.
03:11The entire conversation got even weirder when Hideo Kojima tried to explain why Quiet is
03:16running around half naked in the desert.
03:19As he puts it, she breathes through her skin.
03:22Quiet's actress, Stephanie Justin, has said her piece, supporting Kojima for his vision
03:28while also saying that she understands why some found Quiet to be overly sexualized.
03:33To this day, you just can't have a meaningful conversation about MGSV on the internet without
03:38Quiet being brought up.
03:52Duke Nukem Duke Nukem has long been one of the poster
03:54children of problematic video game protagonists, often labeled as a product of his time by
04:01various gaming-focused outlets.
04:03Some point towards Duke Nukem 3D, where you can give infinite money to nightclub dancers.
04:09Others point towards the most recent game, Duke Nukem Forever, which was more tasteless
04:14in its humor.
04:15What outspoken critics fail to recognize is that the juvenile humor is part of the reason
04:20why people do like Duke Nukem.
04:22Sure, the toilet jokes can be a bit much, but the whole appeal of the games is living
04:26out a ridiculous power fantasy ripped straight from 80s action movies.
04:31Fans have come to Duke and his overinflated ego's defense in recent years, even going
04:36so far as to demand a revival of some sort.
04:43Rainbow Mika Street Fighter V
04:50Whereas most video game controversies are born from media outlets and player bases,
04:54Street Fighter V was in a more isolated situation.
04:58Rainbow Mika is a Japanese pro wrestler in the world of Street Fighter, utilizing some
05:03butt-based attacks to charge into and slam opponents.
05:07Butt-based moves are pretty common in Japanese wrestling, as well as pro wrestling in general,
05:12but ESPN didn't like the way she smacked her own booty when performing her critical
05:17art.
05:18During ESPN's broadcast of EVO 2016, ESPN representatives forced competitor Fudo to
05:24change Mika's appearance to her Story 1 costume, which covers up most of her body
05:30much more than her default costume.
05:32Fans were furious at the corporate meddling on display, and actively defended both Mika
05:37and Fudo.
05:39Capcom took things a step further, unfortunately, and implemented a patch shortly after that,
05:44altering the camera's movements in Mika's critical art, thus censoring her butt slap.
05:49The booty was too powerful.
05:54The Sorceress and the Amazon, Dragon's Crown
06:01Dragon's Crown caused quite a stir back in 2013, and the scrutiny was much more targeted
06:06compared to our other entries.
06:08Kotaku was vocal in its scrutiny against developer Vanillaware, calling out the developer for
06:12using character designs of the Sorceress and Amazon, quote, designed by a 14-year-old boy,
06:19end quote.
06:20The publisher, Atlus, would defend the designs, and a few days later, character designer George
06:24Kamitani put out an art piece of three dwarves from the game in loincloths bathing each other.
06:31Kotaku took this as a response to their hit piece, when Kamitani would clarify the art
06:36was a response to Japanese retailers wanting promotional material of the game's female
06:40characters in swimsuits.
06:43At the end of the day, Dragon's Crown remained unaltered despite the furor around breasts
06:47and butts.
06:58Tracer – Overwatch
07:04Before most of the ire towards Overwatch was about balance and shouting about which characters
07:08are OP and which characters need to be nerfed, there was a moment where some people were
07:12outraged about Tracer.
07:15Tracer once had a pose where she looks back at the camera with her butt facing the front.
07:19Some gaming outlets deemed this pose as a means of sexualizing the character, claiming
07:24the pose focused primarily on her tuckus.
07:27Blizzard jumped on fixing this problem by making a monumental change, lifting up a leg.
07:33Even today, players argue whether this change was even necessary in the first place, and
07:37if the outrage was more isolated than some let on.
07:40What's up with butt cheeks upsetting everyone?
07:43Lara Croft – Tomb Raider Series
07:52It seems that no one can ever be happy with Lara's depictions.
07:56Some are for the better, while some are for the worst.
07:59There was a time when the most outraged Lara experienced was from gaming media outlets,
08:04as many of them would scrutinize the character's sexualization, which was often done by the
08:08marketing teams for the less notable, less praiseworthy Tomb Raider entries.
08:13Then on the fandom side, you have sheer frustration in how Crystal Dynamics has been completely
08:19changing Lara's character.
08:21This has caused some Tomb Raider fans to dismiss the studio, and refuse to acknowledge any
08:26of Lara's prequel games from 2013 onwards.
08:35Eric – Boyfriend Dungeon
08:40Eric is the entire reason why Boyfriend Dungeon found itself in hot water at launch.
08:46Harassment and stalking can get frightening very quickly, and Eric makes it feel all too
08:51real.
08:52This character sends the player text messages that often insinuate creepy behavior and possibly
08:57harmful intentions.
08:59Those who have experienced terrifying scenarios like this voiced their concerns loudly, and
09:03demanded developer Kitfox Games place a warning during boot-up.
09:07Thankfully, Kitfox listened, and an update was put out shortly after that added the warning
09:12into the game.
09:13Abby – The Last of Us Part II
09:23No other video game character has ever caused such a commotion as Abigail Anderson, and
09:30everyone has had a different reason to hate her.
09:33Some hate her because of her part in Joel's fate, understandable.
09:37Others hate her because of how much of a slug her portion of the game is, also understandable.
09:42But an unruly few hate her simply for having muscles, and being a woman with muscles.
09:50Because all in all, there just has not been one positive thing said about this character
09:55ever since The Last of Us Part II launched in 2020.
