00:10Colin Nicholas, coordinator of the Centre for Orang Asli Concerns, said the Orang Asli
00:15community should already be entitled to MARA's benefits as they are part of the Bumiputra

00:22For that reason, Nicholas argued that there was no need for a new body dedicated to Orang
00:27Asli affairs, as proposed by Cameron Highland's MP Ramlee Noor last month.
00:33Nicholas also warned that creating a MARA-like body for Orang Asli could reinforce negative
00:39stereotypes such as the notion that all Orang Asli are poor and in need of support.
00:45He added that institutions set up along racial lines are likely to be riddled with abuse,
00:51while a specific institution for the Orang Asli offered no guarantee that the community's
00:56elites would not exploit the situation for their personal gain.
01:00Instead, Nicholas said there is a need for institutions that support specific sectors
01:05in need, such as the hardcore poor, regardless of ethnicity.
