00:00Political analysts have played down the extent to which the announcement of development projects
00:07will influence voters' support in the August 17 by-election in Ningeri, a state seat in
00:12Kelantan.
00:13Arif Aizuddin Azlan of University Technology Mara said most voters in the area were expected
00:19to prioritize parties that promote an Islamic and a Malay image.
00:24He said Barisan Nasional will need to convince Ningeri voters that they also champion Islam
00:28and the Malay cause if they want to capture the Ningeri seat, rather than focusing too
00:33much on general development projects.
00:35Meanwhile, Azmil Taib of University Science Malaysia said offers of projects ahead of
00:41elections would only have an impact if candidates were contesting parliamentary seats and likely
00:46to be appointed as ministers.
00:49He said it would be difficult otherwise to secure projects, especially as the opposition
00:53in a state like Kelantan, which is not wealthy.
00:57Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamadi, who is also BN chairman, announced the construction
01:02of a technical and vocational education and training institution in Guamusang on Tuesday
01:07ahead of nominations for the by-election this Saturday.
