With the old ways of Bill Belichick out the door, it seems that Jerod Mayo has a whole approach to being an NFL head coach

00:00So, there's a lot of different things to address there.
00:03Overall, I'd say I remain a fan of it.
00:05I was a fan of the idea of Gerard Mayo before they hired him, when they hired him, when
00:10they announced it.
00:11And I know people have a lot of skepticism and some cynicism about him and who he's going
00:16to be in comparison to Bill Belichick.
00:18Is he going to be too player-friendly?
00:19Can we give him, like, I'm going to give the guy a chance.
00:23Because what Bill was doing with the majority of his players over the last several years
00:28wasn't really connecting and working for the most part.
00:31So, I agree with that, but there's no middle ground between Bill and Mayo?
00:33I think that there could be, but I agree, like, it is possible, I know what you're suggesting,
00:38or I think I do, which is that Mayo's way too far in the other side.
00:42He's letting everything slide.
00:44Everybody gets a player lounge.
00:46Everybody's playing PlayStation.
00:47They're taking over everything.
00:49Everybody gets a contract.
00:50I get that, but this is the first day of padded practice.
00:54I think that this is a very different approach than what we're used to, and so it's really
00:59uncomfortable for a lot of people watching it.
01:01And watching guys air out their dirty laundry, not just to the media, but in front of open
01:05practice.
01:06I understand how that's uncomfortable.
01:09It doesn't mean that it's not going to work, and it doesn't mean that he can't be inspiring
01:13and motivating and a very smart coach just because his approach is really different.
01:18So am I a fan of it?
01:20I don't know if I'm going to be a fan of the way that the football team looks come September,
01:23October, November, or beyond, but right now, I'm going to remain open-minded.
01:27Okay, so you can vote in our big question of the day.
01:29It's early in camp, but are you a fan of the early returns on Gerard Mayo's approach?
01:33Yes or no?
01:34You can vote at Jones and Meggo.
01:35You can also weigh in on the phones at 617-779-7937, already a hold-in.
01:42That's become a distraction where players are barking at the coach and getting sent
01:45off the field, which does sound like the Pete Carroll days, if we're being honest.
01:49By the way, our Patriots coverage presented by T-Mobile.
01:51Switch to T-Mobile and you can get tons of benefits and still save on every plan versus
01:55AT&T and Verizon.
01:56You can use their savings calculator to find out how at t-mobile.com slash switch.
02:01Arkan, you a fan of it?
02:02Yeah, I am.
02:03I think it's different from Bill Belichick, and that's what I was looking for.
02:05I was looking for a different environment.
02:06I was looking for a different attitude, a different way of going about things.
02:09I think that Bill's was, and not just him, as an extension of him, the Krafts, too, with
02:14the way they had all the things set up and not set up that terrible report card that
02:19they got from the team that was last year and the year before.
02:22I mean, it just seems like as much as it looks like Mayo's going way over the top, you hear
02:27players come in and say, yeah, you know, this is how it normally is.
02:29This is how it was in the last place I was.
02:31It's not like how it was in New England.
02:33It was definitely different from this in New England for all these years.
02:36But I think that now what Mayo's doing is catching them and everybody else back up to
02:40how things are in the rest of the NFL.
02:42I don't have any issue with him having later practices.
02:46I don't have any issue with him letting guys talk.
02:48All of those things I thought were inconsequential and didn't mean anything when Belichick made
02:52a whole big deal out about shutting everybody up and not letting anyone talk and not letting
02:56anyone have a personality or ever say anything.
02:58I thought that was stupid.
03:00So I'm glad that Mayo's letting them do it.
03:01I thought all along that was a dumb thing and it didn't actually mean anything.
03:05And now we're going to see if it actually does or not.
03:07Maybe they won't be any better than four wins, but it's not going to be because Matthew Judon
03:10talked about his contractor because they have a place to go play video games after practice.
03:14Like, I don't think any of that matters.
03:15Let me ask the same thing I asked Mego.
03:17Isn't there a happy medium between Bill, who was way too far to one side, and now Mayo
03:21who feels like he's too far, even for a new wave NFL coach, too far the other way?
03:26Like, isn't there a happy medium?
03:27I don't know.
03:28I mean, maybe there is.
03:29I have no idea what that medium would be.
03:30I think that we're just so used to Belichick that we think anything to the other side is
03:34this big, awful thing.
03:35And it's just not.
03:36I just don't think it matters.
03:37I think this is how it is most places around the league.
03:40Do you think Camp Happy with Pete Carroll when he was here was a good thing?
03:42No, but it was also the 90s.
03:44It was a different time.
03:45So, you know, I mean, I guess I just I it was certainly a different time and a long
03:50time ago.
03:51Bill's been here.
03:52Everything pre Bill is a long time ago.
03:53Right.
03:54So he's here 25 years.
03:55So, yeah, to me, that would be my fear that it's too easy.
03:57And I was reading Reese.
03:58And this is before any of the Judon stuff came down today, which is convenient.
04:02We knew he wasn't happy with his deal, but he had been out there practice saying the
04:05right things like, yeah, my name's on the contract.
04:07I'm going to show up.
04:08I got to follow through.
04:09I'm not happy about it.
04:10I'm paraphrasing, but I'm going to be out there.
04:12And I was reading Reese, who highlighted all the different things that are different.
04:17Some notable examples.
04:18There's music throughout practice.
04:19I don't care about that.
04:20That's different.
04:21I can't believe.
04:22But I don't care about that.
04:23I don't care about that.
04:24I just it shocks me that people down there care about that.
04:26I think it's just that's a noteworthy difference.
04:29Like I'm sure if you're down there and you have to stand there and watch practice, it's
04:31just something that's different.
04:32So you're going to talk about it.
04:33That one I don't care about.
04:34I don't care.
04:35They're playing music.
04:36The only loss is you don't get to hear the like GDs that coaches drop on guys.
04:39True.
04:40I'd imagine the music is different, too.
04:41I haven't checked the playlist every single day.
04:43I've seen Reese tweet out like 200 songs or whatever.
04:46It's like a giant, giant playlist, but I imagine it's a lot less, you know, Bon Jovi and things
04:50like this.
04:51I don't care about the music.
04:53Offense versus defense.
04:54It's more of a focus on seven on sevens and eleven on elevens.
04:57Those I do like.
04:58Good.
04:59Later start.
05:00I hate player lounge.
05:01They they needed some sort of daycare and some sort of catering to the players.
05:05But I didn't love Mayo's excuse where it's like, yeah, we're going to give a player lounge
05:09because everybody frees each other out and there's no camaraderie.
05:13I don't necessarily buy that as his explanation for it.
05:16Less can be more shorter practices.
05:18Undulating practices.
05:19I hate that.
05:20And play that word.
05:21Yeah.
05:22I think somebody sent this the other week in the Twitch chat.
05:24It was.
05:25I don't think he used the right word.
05:26I think he meant to use a different word.
05:28Undulating.
05:29Yeah.
05:30Do you think undulating is the word he never heard that word until I've heard the word
05:32undulate.
05:33But I've read it.
05:34I don't.
05:35I've never heard someone say it aloud.
05:36I don't think that's quite the word he meant to use.
05:38And then player expression, which are can.
05:40I agree.
05:41You don't need to muzzle them.
05:42But this is, I think, the greatest area where it's like, there's no happy medium between.
05:45We got players parading up there about being pissed about their contract.
05:49God.
05:50Ciao.
05:51Jude on.
05:52Everybody's getting paid anyway, by the way, and rewarded for last year's four win team,
05:54which is another soft thing that they're doing.
05:56That's not all Mayo, but that's another soft thing they're doing.
05:59And Bill muzzling players and complaining about your car.
06:01There's no happy medium between there because this Jude on thing to me feels like a distraction
06:06and a problem.
06:07And it underscores why I don't like Gerard Mayo's approach.
06:10So no, I'm not a fan of it.
06:11Isn't the happy medium in part going over to Jude on and having a quick conversation
06:15and then saying, well, you're not just going to sit here on the stacks of pads, I guess,
06:19get out, get out, get out of sight.
06:21You let him run out there in the first place.
06:23Like I saw this earlier in the Twitch chat as well.
06:25Oh, well, he sent him off the field.
06:26Isn't that isn't that him being a hard ass and being a disciplinarian?
06:29No, not at all.
06:31It was a whole.
06:32We all know about it.
06:33It's a whole spectacle for everybody to see.
