00:00keeping the square in square dancing, bow to the inevitable.
00:05Gym teachers in Ohio were often inspired by quaint local traditions,
00:08so for sixth graders, this meant the well-known aerobic exercise called square dancing.
00:14When we weren't hurling fireballs or firing floor hockey pucks,
00:18we were bowing to our corners and promenading back home.
00:22Any outside observer would notice instantly that none of us wanted to be in our skins at that moment.
00:27We only did what the nice recording told us to do.
00:31It's important to keep in mind that this was taking place squarely during the disco era.
00:37While other kids were moving and grooving to Elton John, Rod Stewart, or Donna Summer,
00:42we were busy twisting ourselves into convoluted poses while fiddles and banjos sawed away.
00:48If the gym teacher actually had his pulse on the Cleveland area scene,
00:52we would have been learning how to do the polka and the chicken dance instead.
00:57Fortunately, the middle school gym teachers took pity on us
01:01and taught us modern line dances like the electric slide, the hustle, and the continental.
01:06No more corners, no more partners, just a line of 13-year-olds getting down with our bad selves.
01:1320-year high school reunions, here we come.
