00:00Ryan Reynolds has apparently squashed a longstanding rumored beef with a former
00:04co-star — at least long enough to film some scenes for Deadpool and Wolverine.
00:08Warning! Spoilers ahead!
00:10As expected, Deadpool and Wolverine is loaded with surprising cameos. There are so many, in fact,
00:15that Marvel has even revealed a few in the trailers, such as Daphne Keene's
00:18appearance as Laura — aka X-23 — in the film's final trailer.
00:22You were always the wrong guy.
00:24That said, Marvel saved most of the cameo surprises for the movie itself. Perhaps the
00:28biggest bunch of cameos comes in the middle of the movie, when Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool
00:32and Hugh Jackman's Wolverine are stuck in a drab, gray void. After fighting each other
00:36to exhaustion, they're brought to a secret location and introduced to a group of Marvel
00:40characters who are fighting to escape. The group includes Keene's Laura, Jennifer Garner as Electra,
00:45Channing Tatum making his first actual appearance as Gambit, and, yes,
00:49Wesley freakin' Snipes as Blade.
00:51Snipes' return as Blade is a cameo that is almost certainly the most surprising,
00:55for multiple reasons.
00:56For one thing, there have been plenty of rumors about other cameos,
00:59but Snipes was not among them. On top of that, Marvel has been trying,
01:03with considerable difficulty, to launch a new Blade movie with Mahershala Ali,
01:07so bringing Snipes back as the Daywalker seemed unlikely.
01:10There's an even bigger reason why Snipes' surprise involvement in Deadpool and Wolverine
01:14was so unexpected. Rumors have long suggested that Snipes and Reynolds do not get along.
01:18It all stems from the first time the two worked together on the 2004's Blade Trinity.
01:22There's an exchange in Deadpool and Wolverine that even pokes fun at these rumors,
01:26with Snipes as Blade saying to Deadpool,
01:28"'I don't like you.'"
01:29Reynolds, as Deadpool, replies,
01:31"'You never did.'"
01:31So how did these rumors get started?
01:33In the early 2000s, Reynolds' star was on the rise. He made the jump from his sitcom Two Guys,
01:38a Girl, and a Pizza Place to leading film roles with 2002's raunchy comedy Van Wilder.
01:43The Canadian actor also got ridiculously ripped, a detail some filmmakers exploited,
01:48by finding ways for Reynolds to take his shirt off and showcase those abs.
01:51By 2004, he landed a supporting role in the third and final entry of the Blade trilogy,
01:55playing wisecracking vampire hunter Hannibal King.
01:58"'Do I pass the audition?'
02:02"'Rookies.'"
02:04Rumors abound that Blade Trinity was a troubled shoot. Star Wesley Snipes allegedly had issues
02:08with the film's director, David S. Goyer. He also was said to have not gotten along with Reynolds.
02:13The source for much of this is co-star Patton Oswalt,
02:16who has been pretty vocal about the problems on set.
02:18"'Wesley Snipes was going crazy, and he wouldn't come out of his trailer,
02:23and he would only answer to the name Blade.'"
02:25Oswalt told The A.V. Club that Snipes even tried to strangle Goyer at one point.
02:30All that said, it's worth noting that Snipes denied these claims in an interview with The Guardian.
02:34For his part, Reynolds has attempted to downplay the rumors of on-set tensions.
02:38He told IGN that stories about troubles on the Blade Trinity set were, quote,
02:42"'overblown.'" However, he did admit to going out of his way to try to make Snipes break
02:46character during certain scenes, implying maybe his co-star was taking things a little too
02:50seriously. Reynolds said,
02:52"'I don't know if I ever got him to laugh. The guy's Blade. Hopefully on the inside,
02:56he's laughing. I don't know. It was a challenging process. I've never experienced anything like that.'"
03:01In any case, if there was bad blood between Snipes and Reynolds,
03:04it appears to be water under the bridge. Or at least they could coexist on the set of
03:08Deadpool and Wolverine. Now, whether or not Marvel ever gets that Blade reboot
03:12off the ground is another question. The film is currently scheduled for November 2025.
