00:00It may have been settled in the ring, but it's being spotlighted as a statue.
00:04Here's a look at the brand of McFarland toys, Movie Maniacs, the Platinum Edition, Rocky's Rocky Balboa.
00:22Rocky is a small-time Philadelphia boxer going nowhere
00:25until an unbelievable shot to fight the World Heavyweight Champion lights a fire inside him.
00:30For those sparring with the idea of picking up the Rocky Balboa Movie Maniac for yourself,
00:35the figure should be available right now.
00:37I'd like to thank the folks over at McFarland Toys that did provide the sample we could have a look at.
00:41They, in fact, provided the Platinum Edition release,
00:44which seems to be the only difference between this one and the regular version is the color of Rocky's trunks.
00:49The regular release is going to have white trunks.
00:51The Platinum Edition, as you can see right now for yourself, is sporting red trunks.
00:54The figures, though, are going to be, I would imagine, the exact same size and heights.
00:58Both of them are going to stand about five and three-quarters of an inch or about 14 and a half centimeters tall.
01:04I'm not really sure who I'd put my money on, but here's what Rocky Balboa looks like with both Red Miller and Pennywise the Clown.
01:10Just to kind of give you a variety of really what we're getting from McFarland Toys and their new Movie Maniacs line,
01:15they're not as much always focusing on the horror elements like I brought in for the examples of Red Miller,
01:20the craziness of Nicolas Cage, the insanity of Pennywise the Clown.
01:24But I think from a size standpoint, yes, Rocky does fit in pretty well with the figures that we've got displayed right now.
01:30It does seem, though, that they're tossing around new ideas when it comes to the Movie Maniacs line.
01:34Something, though, that they have dismissed with the newer releases is, first of all, the curved background.
01:39I'm just bringing in Red Miller's right now. It just happens to be upside down. Let's just flip that around.
01:43Red Miller's and really all of the Movie Maniacs not only have had harder packaging to open up,
01:47so they've improved it right there, but this curved background that we got with a lot of the Movie Maniacs
01:51has now kind of gone to the wayside. They've gotten rid of them altogether.
01:55Even like these clear acrylic display stand bases, they've gotten rid of those.
01:59And what they've done instead, let me just move this one out of the way, inside the packaging,
02:03you actually get yourself a back as well as the sides and the bottom that serve as somewhat of a serviceable background.
02:10If you want to, like, for example, display your Rocky Balboa, you just basically would just bring this around
02:14and just have Rocky displayed in front of it. So it does give you at least somewhat of a display.
02:19And then, of course, you got yourself as well the card. The card will go right there as well.
02:23Something also that they've done differently, and only speaking really for Rocky, Rocky comes included with Versus.
02:28I imagine you're not going to be using that with every single Movie Maniac release, but at least from what we're going to be getting
02:33with Rocky and Apollo, we'll be looking at the upcoming review. They come with these Versus stands.
02:38There's a little slot in the top, and you get yourself the trading card of Rocky, and that just basically fits in that slot
02:43and is displayed that way. Now, I don't know, based on that, whether they're still going to use,
02:48and this just happens to be the one for Red Miller, if they're still going to be using these type of placard stands,
02:52which, again, would have the slot in the top, and you would just basically take the card and fit them into that.
02:56Let's remove this right now. I'm just going to get rid of this background for right now.
02:59I'm just going to put it off to the side. The figure does still come included with a little mystery bag.
03:04I haven't honestly looked inside the bag. I don't know what's inside there yet, but it's flat,
03:09so I would imagine it's probably not going to be a pair of shoes, I'm sure, nor is it going to be an alternate head portrait,
03:14maybe like a sticker, maybe a map, maybe a big photo. We'll find out. Let's just open up the bag here.
03:19I don't even really need a knife for that, and we're just going to open this up completely,
03:23see exactly what the mystery thing is going to be inside. Nothing else in there? No. Okay.
03:28So we've got ourselves, all I want to do is go to the distance. That's a Rocky, and it looks to be a sticker,
03:33and there's also a Rocky Balboa, the Italian Stallion, which, again, looking at it,
03:38just peel the corner of it, yeah, it looks like they are both stickers.
03:42So if you are one that likes to collect stickers, I'm a guy that likes to collect stickers,
03:45you've got a couple of extra Rocky stickers to put in your sticker books. Let's move those off to the side.
03:50We've already looked at the fact that it comes included with, of course, the trading card.
03:53The trading card does, once again, show you what the regular Movie Maniacs Rocky Balboa is going to look like
03:58with white trunks, not the red trunks. Rocky Balboa on the side, we've got Rocky down below here,
04:02and then on the back, a Certificate of Authenticity by Todd himself.
04:06This is P15 out of the very limited run of 6,400 copies.
04:10Again, we will be looking at the Apollo Creed from the Movie Maniacs.
04:13I'll be obviously bringing back in Rocky for comparison's sake. Nice little trading card, though.
04:17And I do, again, like the idea that, I'm sure, again, it's probably not going to be with every Movie Maniacs
04:21because the idea of, you know, like future figures all having VS make no sense whatsoever.
04:26But again, it's going to be something we're going to be seeing again when we're looking at Apollo.
04:29So let's move that off to the side.
04:31Rocky, notably, you may have noticed at the beginning of this review that he was missing a head.
04:35Don't worry, the head wasn't broken. It just happened to have come dislodged from his shoulders and his neck
04:40and was actually just loose inside the box.
04:42He does actually come with two different portraits. Just before we look at his alternate portrait,
04:45I just want to show you guys what the figure looks like, starting first with his display base.
04:48I really like the base quite a lot. The base, once again, has a figure permanently attached to it,
04:53so you can't remove it. The actual base does look like the inside of the ring.
04:57And then you've got, as well, Rocky Balboa here on the front, a nice little placard with really nice, well-painted gold.
05:03It looks to be, as well, the heavyweight title. Again, you can see the strap on the side.
05:07He does have, though, these little peg placements here.
05:10Now, I would imagine that they're probably going to be using this same type of display stand for at least Apollo,
05:15because I would imagine, obviously, they're going to be using the same type of display base.
05:18These pegs, I'm sure, are probably going to be using for Apollo.
05:21They serve no purpose for Rocky, so it looks like they just covered them over in squares.
05:25I like the texturing. Again, I think the display base is very well-painted.
05:28It's obviously just hollow on the bottom of it.
05:30But again, it really does do a good job of showcasing, first of all, who the character is,
05:34and bringing in elements of what that character actually is.
05:37Rocky is a boxer, so it makes sense that he's going to have the interior of the ring,
05:40and he's going to, again, have the boxing title.
05:42The thing that he's going for features there on the front with the placard of his name.
05:46I think that's a really nice touch.
05:47Again, you've got Rocky attached to this, so there's no way you can remove it.
05:50From a head sculpt standpoint, once I did retrieve at least the head,
05:53we get a really nice-looking young Sylvester Stallone.
05:57I think it looks fantastic.
05:59The coloring is pretty good, too. It matches the rest of his body.
06:01I do feel like his face is just a tad bit lighter than the rest of his body.
06:06The only other thing I would say, though, is now, again, this is a stylized version of Stallone,
06:11Rocky Balboa from the original film.
06:13I do feel like his head is a little on the large side when, again, you compare him to the rest of his body.
06:17Maybe the fact that his shoulders are a little too more narrow.
06:20His body feels like it's a little bit smaller.
06:22But, again, I think a lot of it just has to do with the fact that he's got a really large head.
06:26Maybe some of the proportions seem a little more thrown off for the rest of the statue.
06:30Now, being that he does have a swappable head,
06:33one of the things that can't be avoided is that there's a seam line right here
06:36where you can see outlined around his ear and outlined down the side of his chin.
06:40That's going to be where you're going to remove the head.
06:43At least they put it in a place...
06:45They didn't put the cut right here where you're going to be removing everything.
06:48They at least found a clever enough way to put the line right around his ear and right around his chin.
06:52So it's somewhat hidden.
06:55But a really good head sculpt overall for Rocky.
06:57Now, again, you get two different head portraits.
06:59You're going to get this one, and then you're going to have one, I suppose, post- or mid-fight.
07:03He's bruised. He's battered.
07:05You can see he's got these big swellings underneath his eyes.
07:08He's going to have to have that looked at if he's going to be able to see properly.
07:11He's definitely a little bit more disoriented.
07:13But again, to change out the head is super easy.
07:15You're just going to take the head and remove it like that.
07:17And then when you're looking at it, if you look at the bottom of it, it has to go a certain way.
07:21So you have to line it up.
07:23You can't have it faced the opposite way because it just isn't going to work.
07:26Just line everything up, pop it back in place.
07:28Yeah, that's good-looking Rocky as well.
07:30A lot more use of definitely more pinks and reds and stuff like that
07:34as he's definitely a lot more, again, battered.
07:36Really looks good, though, on figure.
07:38I think if given the choice, though, unless I do pick up a second one of these,
07:41which I'm really tempted to do, probably will end up displaying, I feel,
07:44one of the Rockies, which is the regular neutral portrait
07:46because it's too good of a head sculpt to put back in a bag
07:49and then have the other one displayed.
07:51Like if, for example, you choose to get yourself the regular version and the platinum edition,
07:55I would imagine it'd be safe to assume that the posts on the neck are going to be exactly the same.
07:59So again, you could just mix and match the heads if you wanted to.
08:02One of them will be displayed with the neutral.
08:04One will be displayed with the battered face.
08:06Nice paint on overall both of them.
08:08The boxing gloves are well-painted, too.
08:10You've got the little markings there down on the side that says Balboa.
08:12Those have been taped off, as you can see.
08:14Paint, no problems whatsoever.
08:16Now, again, with this being the platinum edition, you've got red trunks.
08:19If you were, though, to invest in the idea of getting the regular version,
08:22you basically would take the colors and you'd swap them around.
08:24So he'd have red stripes on the side, he'd have a red belt at the top,
08:27and then he'd have white trunks instead of the red.
08:29The paint is fairly shiny, as you can see.
08:32I think it works well for the type of material he would have had for the shorts in the movie.
08:35He's got some really nice painted socks there as well.
08:37Stripes, again, very nicely painted, very cleanly painted,
08:41even to the point where in between the green and the yellow,
08:45there's a very thin line of white.
08:47And to look at that, there's no problems with that at all.
08:51There's no way I'd be able to do that by hand.
08:54I don't know if they're doing it by hand-painting them,
08:56or they're printing them in the machine.
08:58But that's a very fine line to work with,
09:00and it's so easy to cross that line, literally and figuratively.
09:03Of course, he's got his Balkan shoes down below there as well,
09:06just as bright as the socks above them.
09:08All in all, though, again, a nice-looking figure.
09:10Whether you would debate the idea whether this guy is truly a movie maniac or not,
09:13I think he's definitely a well-sculpted,
09:15and I think from a likeness standpoint,
09:17lands a knockout blow, looking a lot like Rocky Balboa,
09:20and therefore also Sylvester Stallone.
09:22Whether, again, you decide you want to display the figure with that head,
09:25or perhaps maybe start things first.
09:27I was going to say with the head that he started with inside the packaging,
09:29but to be honest, that's not true.
09:31The figure head was actually just loose inside,
09:33but again, it was easy to swap the heads out.
09:35I think I would rather probably start,
09:37maybe display the figure, I think, with this head sculpt first,
09:39and if then down the road I decide to pick up,
09:42who am I kidding, I will be picking up the regular version of this guy,
09:44will probably be displaying one of them with the battered face,
09:47and then the other one with the neutral expression.
09:49But yeah, overall, very happy with how this one turned out.
09:51I'm really looking forward to seeing how good Apollo looks in hand as well.
09:54Some have said the movie maniacs have deviated too far away
09:57from what made the line so popular in the past.
09:59That the focus of the company in the early 2000s
10:01was all about delivering semi-posable horror-related characters,
10:04and that the focus on the company now for the present
10:06is delivering shrunk-down pre-posed statues.
10:09Well, to back that up though,
10:11the last later waves of movie maniacs, even in the early 2000s,
10:13introduced the likes of Snake Plissken,
10:15we got ourselves Samuel Jackson's Shaft,
10:17and even the Terminators,
10:19and while maybe some of the latter you could put in the category of sci-fi,
10:21which really isn't that far removed from horror,
10:23I mean, to get a Shaft back then
10:25probably stood out like a bit of a sore thumb.
10:27But even one thing that's consistent, though,
10:29about this line, even in the past, even in the present,
10:31is that the sculpting of the talented artists behind the scenes,
10:34to today's standards,
10:36that Shaft still looks like Samuel Jackson.
10:38And the stuff we're getting now from movie maniacs,
10:40granted, isn't as much related to horror,
10:42but the idea, I think, in mind
10:44is that they've branched off the line
10:46to include recognizable names as a whole.
10:48Everything that you would see on the silver screen,
10:50that you would know those characters right away,
10:52and no more of a recognizable name
10:54than the Italian stallion Rocky Balboa.
10:56If you look at this, you can see right away
10:58that looks like Sylvester Stallone.
11:00Whether he's bruised, he's battered,
11:02or you go with the cleaner-looking head sculpt,
11:04he does look like him.
11:06Granted, though, with a pre-post figure like this,
11:08even though it's delivering a top-notch level of sculpting,
11:10I do feel like the head is maybe a little too big
11:12for Rocky's shoulders.
11:14But the rest of the body still delivers a knockout blow.
11:16Now, this, obviously, is the Platinum Edition.
11:18The only thing different between the Platinum and the regular version
11:20is the coloring of the trunks, as far as I know.
11:22The trunks, obviously, for this one, are red.
11:24The trunks for the regular version are going to be white,
11:26with the red stripes down the side.
11:28The Platinum Edition that was provided here
11:30is limited to, also, 6,400 pieces worldwide.
11:32So there's going to be a difference, obviously, between the two.
11:34And while I didn't have the chance to look at the regular version of Rocky,
11:36we, though, in an upcoming review,
11:38will be looking at not only the regular version,
11:40but also the Platinum Edition of Apollo Creed.
11:42Definitely looking forward to that.
11:44But what do you guys feel when it comes to the new line of movie maniacs?
11:46Do you wish, though, that they were focused a little bit more on horror?
11:48Or do you like the idea
11:50that they've branched off the line
11:52to include anyone and everyone
11:54that's ever been on the silver screen and on TV?
11:56Let me know what your feelings are down below in the comments section.
11:58In the meantime, though,
12:00I'd like to thank the folks over at McFarland Toys.
12:02Yeah, they did provide the sample of the brand new movie maniacs,
12:04Platinum Edition Rocky Balboa.
12:06If you guys did enjoy this video,
12:08I want to do a solid throw to like,
12:10or hit that thumbs up.
12:12I don't know, what are we doing right now?
12:14I think it's right now a thumbs up.
12:16It could later on change to a like.
12:18Either way, hit the thing that's right next to the subscribe.
12:20If you haven't already subscribed, make sure you do that.
12:22Make sure, of course, the most important thing is that you're coming back.
12:24We're going to wrap things up right now,
12:26obviously with Rocky,
12:28but we're going to continue the journey through the Rocky legacy
12:30looking at Apollo Creed.
12:32And, of course, as always, guys, thanks for watching.
12:34See you guys next time.
