00:00Hi kids! Today we will be learning how we can use division in our problems. So let's start!
00:12Here are six pencils. How will you divide or distribute them between two kids? Let's see!
00:26For distributing or dividing the pencils between two, give one at a time to each kid till none is left.
00:41See? So each kid will get three pencils. That is six divided by two equals three.
00:55This method of division is called distribution.
01:02Now let's learn another way.
01:07There are twenty candies. How many sets of four candies can we make from twenty?
01:18Subtract four from twenty, we get sixteen.
01:24Again, subtract four, we get twelve.
01:30Again, subtract four, we get eight.
01:36Again, subtract four, we get four.
01:42Once again, subtract four, we get zero.
01:48So we can subtract four five times from twenty.
01:55Or, we can make five sets of four candies from twenty candies.
02:03Or, four candies will be there in each set if we divide twenty into five groups.
02:13We say it as twenty divided by four equals five.
02:22Also, twenty divided by five equals four.
02:30So division is a problem of repeated subtraction.
02:37Let's learn division in another way.
02:42Here are thirty chocolates and we have to divide or distribute them in six kids.
02:53How many chocolates will each kid get?
02:58Here is another method.
03:02Just think how many times six can go into the other number, that is thirty.
03:11Or, six multiplied by what gives us thirty?
03:17Memorize the table of six and think.
03:23Yeah, six times five gives us thirty.
03:30That is, six can go into the number thirty five times.
03:38So, each kid will get five chocolates. Good!
03:45Now we have learned three methods of division.
03:50One is the distribution.
03:54Other is repeated subtraction.
03:58And the third is finding the nearest multiple.
04:04Now, let's learn another way.
04:08It's the mathematical division.
04:12Let's learn.
04:15There are eighty-four apples.
04:18If we distribute them in four girls, how many apples will one girl get?
04:26So, we have to divide eighty-four by four.
04:33Here we will learn mathematical division or the long division method.
04:41The number that we have to divide is dividend.
04:47The number with which we are dividing is the divisor.
04:54And the answer that we will get will be our quotient.
05:00And if any number is left after the division, that is called remainder.
05:10First of all, write like this.
05:14Here, four is our divisor.
05:18Eighty-four is our dividend.
05:22Now, the first step in long division method is find the number.
05:31That is find how many times the divisor can go into the first digit of the dividend.
05:41Think this way.
05:44Four multiplied by what gives us something equal or less than eight?
05:52Four multiplied by two gives us eight.
05:58So, two is the number we want.
06:04Write it in the quotient.
06:07Now, the second step is multiply.
06:12Here, multiply the divisor with number we found in the previous step and write the product below.
06:23Now, following the third step is the subtract.
06:32Here, subtract the multiple from the first digit of divisor and write the difference below.
06:43Now, following the fourth step of long division method, that is bring down.
06:52Here, bring down the next digit in divisor if any left and write it below.
07:02Now, we have followed the four steps of long division method.
07:10Now, repeat all the steps till no digit is left in the divisor to bring down.
07:19First step is find the number.
07:23Find how many times the divisor can go into the number four.
07:30Think this way.
07:32Four multiplied by what gives us a number which is less than or equal to four?
07:42Four multiplied by one gives us four.
07:48So, one is the number we want.
07:53Write it in the quotient.
07:56Next step is multiply.
08:00Multiply the divisor with one.
08:04Four multiplied by one gives us four.
08:10Write the multiple below like this.
08:15Third step is subtract.
08:20Now, subtract and write the difference below.
08:26Now, we have no more digit left in the divisor to bring down.
08:33Hence, the division is complete and no remainder is left.
08:41Here, divisor is four.
08:45Dividend is 84.
08:49Quotient, we got that is our answer is 21.
08:55And the remainder is zero.
08:59If we divide 84 apples in four girls, each girl will get 21 apples.
09:08Good!
09:10So kids, let's take more examples for practice.
09:15We have to divide 20 by 5.
09:20First step is find the number.
09:24That is, find how many times the divisor can go into the first digit of dividend.
09:35But the first digit is smaller than divisor.
09:40So, find how many times the divisor can go into the first two digits of the dividend.
09:50Think this way.
09:53Five multiplied by what gives us a number which is less than or equal to 20.
10:03Yeah!
10:05Five multiplied by four is 20.
10:10So, four is the number we want.
10:14Write it in the quotient.
10:17Now, the second step is multiply.
10:23Now, multiply five with four and write the multiple below.
10:30Now, the third step is subtract.
10:35Now, subtract and write the difference below.
10:40Now, we have no number in the divisor to bring down.
10:45So, we can't follow the fourth step and the division is complete.
10:52Five is divisor.
10:56Twenty is dividend.
10:59Four is quotient and remainder zero.
11:06So, 20 divided by 5 is 4.
11:12Good!
11:14Now, let's take another example.
11:19We have to divide 52 by 5.
11:24Let's start.
11:27The first step is find the number.
11:31That is, find how many times the divisor can go into the first digit of dividend.
11:39Think this way.
11:41Five multiplied by what gives us a number which is less than or equal to 5.
11:50So, one is the number we want.
11:54Write it in the quotient.
11:57Now, the second step is multiply.
12:02Now, multiply five with one and write the multiple below.
12:09Now, the third step is subtract.
12:13Now, subtract and write the difference below.
12:18Now, fourth step is bring down.
12:23Make an arrow and bring down the next number in the dividend.
12:30Now again, follow the steps.
12:34The first step is find the number.
12:38That is how many times the divisor can go into 2.
12:45Think this way.
12:47Five multiplied by what gives us a number which is less than or equal to 2.
12:57Five multiplied by zero gives us zero.
13:03So, zero is the number we want.
13:07Write it in the quotient.
13:10Now, the second step is multiply.
13:16Now, multiply five with zero and write the multiple below.
13:25Now, the third step is subtract.
13:30Now, subtract and write the difference below.
13:34The fourth step is bring down.
13:39We have no number in the dividend to bring down.
13:44So, our division is complete.
13:48Five is divisor.
13:52Fifty-two is dividend.
13:56Ten is quotient.
13:59And the remainder is 2.
14:03Remainder.
14:05What does remainder mean?
14:09If we divide 52 things in 5 person,
14:14each person will get 10 things and 2 will be left undivided.
14:21So, 2 is the remainder.
14:25Good!
14:28So, what have we learnt?
14:30What is division and its various methods?
14:35Now, you may go ahead and take a quiz to learn more.
14:39Bye-bye!
