00:00Hey, psst!
00:05Come over here!
00:06Behind the boxes!
00:08I'm hiding from the multiplication and division symbols.
00:11They want to play with me really badly, but sometimes I just don't understand them.
00:15They want to play tag with me, but let's face it, division can be really rough, and I am
00:19not joking.
00:21Maybe you guys can help me learn more about the relationship between multiplication and
00:25division.
00:26Will you help me?
00:28Thanks.
00:29Wait, did you hear that?
00:31Are they nearby?
00:33Uh oh.
00:35Ow.
00:36Ah!
00:37Zero!
00:40Ugh.
00:44Multiplication and division are not as hard as they look.
00:47Multiplication is like repeated addition, division is like repeated subtraction.
00:53Here we have two math problems that are already completed.
00:563 times 4 equals 12, and 12 divided by 3 equals 4.
01:02In division we are sharing something equally.
01:05Division is just the opposite of multiplication.
01:08We call that the inverse.
01:10Now let's look at the relationship between these two problems.
01:13In the problem 3 times 4 there are three groups, and within each group we have four dots representing
01:21the four that are in each group.
01:25There are 12 dots total which is our answer.
01:30In the division problem you will notice that the 12 is at the beginning.
01:34In a division problem you start with the total number of dots.
01:38The problem is telling us that we will take 12 dots and divide them equally among three
01:43groups.
01:45We will put a dot in each group until all dots are gone.
01:52Can you tell me how many dots are in each group?
01:56There are four dots in each group just like the answer.
02:00Awesome!
02:01In both the multiplication and division problems the smaller numbers tell us how many groups
02:05we have and how many items go in each group.
02:09The biggest number in each problem is the total amount of items or dots in our case.
02:17Here are two more problems but they don't give us the answer.
02:20Let's start with the division problem and see if using multiplication can help us.
02:2415 divided by 3 equals blank.
02:2715 is the large number or total of dots.
02:32We are dividing the 15 dots equally among three groups.
02:37We start by using our three groups and share the dots equally.
02:41To do this we will put one dot in each group until they are gone.
02:48How many dots are in each group?
02:52The answer is 5.
02:54Great job!
02:55So 15 divided by 3 is 5.
02:58If we pay attention we can see that 5 multiplied by 3 in the problem gives us 15.
03:06Wait a minute.
03:08We just answered the multiplication problem on the left.
03:115 times 3 equals 15.
03:14It's really important to remember that in division you are finding what two numbers
03:18multiplied together equal the largest number.
03:22The two smaller numbers in this division problem multiplied together gives us the largest number
03:26which is 15.
03:29This is amazing stuff and now it is time to go play some tag.
03:32This time I am going to be ready now that I understand a little bit more of division
03:36and multiplication.
03:38See you next time.
03:39Goodbye!
