00:00:00We're back live at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas, a beautiful scene from our Goodyear
00:00:09blimp.
00:00:10The scene set, almost total darkness, the lights of the state fair in the background
00:00:16as the band begins to perform its halftime entertainment.
00:00:19Yes, over 68,000 people here watching the Dallas Cowboys enjoying a 13 to 6 halftime
00:00:26lead over the Giants.
00:00:28The scoring as shown on your screen, first a 42-yard field goal by Mike Clark to give
00:00:34Dallas a 3-0 lead, then a 35-yard field goal by Pete Gogolak to tie it at 3-3, a 41-yarder
00:00:42by Mike to make it 6-3 Dallas, a 20-yarder by Pete to make it 6-6, and then finally with
00:00:49only 17 seconds left in the first half, the culmination of a drive by the Cowboys within
00:00:55the final two minutes, magnificently explained by Don Meredith as he forced his team or X
00:01:01team down the field, staw back through to tight end Billy Chuaks for 4 yards, Dallas
00:01:07leading 13 to 6.
00:01:08The statistics speak for themselves, Dallas dominating, only mildly though in total number
00:01:14of offensive plays in first downs, a reasonable edge in rushing yardage, a very scared edge
00:01:21in passing yardage, and the total yardage of the two teams not that vastly different.
00:01:27Time of possession speaks for itself on the screen.
00:01:30Now it's my personal privilege to remind you, viewers and listeners, that our NBA season
00:01:37begins Friday, November 26th, and our color commentator will be Big Bill Russell, with
00:01:42whom I spoke yesterday asking him what he'd add to the package.
00:01:47Well, Howard, I'd like to think I'm going to add insight from a coaching viewpoint and
00:01:53honesty and intelligence.
00:01:55I think that those, not that I didn't have it before, of course, but I think that it's
00:02:03a chance to do something that I think I may be able to help in.
00:02:07I enjoyed playing basketball and I had some definite ideas about it.
00:02:11I'm very opinionated, so don't have to worry about me sitting there on my phone.
00:02:14You're not afraid of being controversial?
00:02:16No, Howard, not at this point.
00:02:18I'm too old to be afraid now.
00:02:21What do you mean by bringing honesty to it?
00:02:23Well, I think that when I see a guy make a mistake, I'll say it's a mistake, because
00:02:29sometimes a guy makes a mistake and the fans won't even know it's a mistake.
00:02:32But also, when I see a guy make a good play that the fans may not necessarily recognize,
00:02:36I'll say that too.
00:02:37I think that what I wanted to bring out are the subtleties of the game.
00:02:42Not only that, but the way you've just expressed it, you're going to bring some journalism
00:02:46to the transmission of the contest.
00:02:48We welcome you aboard.
00:02:49What is that?
00:02:50Journalism to the transmission of the contest, Bill.
00:02:53Oh, that's what I thought you said.
00:02:57Thank you very much, Bill Russell, and we look forward to our opening NBA game with
00:03:01Bill Friday, November 26th, Baltimore at Atlanta, 2 o'clock Eastern Time.
00:03:06Now let's go to our NFL halftime highlight.
00:03:12The old grown-up at Candlestick Park, San Francisco to see the Rams play the 49ers.
00:03:17We're in third quarter action, the score tied 3-3.
00:03:20That's Les Josephson, 34.
00:03:22Watch him, apparently stopped, but not so.
00:03:25Now watch him go, he's out by himself.
00:03:28Skirting for the left sideline, and that's Bruce Taylor coming up on him.
00:03:32Bruce Taylor making the tackle, a 57-yard jaunt for Josephson.
00:03:37Later the Rams missed a field goal, tried Taylor, ran it out, but only to the one.
00:03:41Now the handoff, Brody to Willett, he fumbled.
00:03:43Gene Howard, 21, picks it up, apparently stopped.
00:03:46Wait, did Purnell push him over?
00:03:48Hard to tell.
00:03:49If he did, it was illegal, but the official said no.
00:03:52Touchdown the Rams, lead it 10-3.
00:03:57A happy group of Rams playing opportunistic football.
00:04:00Now it's fourth quarter, they're trailing 13-10, but Larry Smith bursts off left tackle
00:04:05from his own 36.
00:04:07This time nobody's going to catch him.
00:04:09Smith is going all the way for the touchdown.
00:04:11The Rams lead it 17-13.
00:04:14Take command, add a field goal, beat the 49ers 20-13.
00:04:20Tommy Pro Gro wins a big one.
00:04:24Happiness reigns supreme.
00:04:26That's Hank Stram, the colorful, innovative coach of the Kansas City Chiefs at Kansas City.
00:04:30His team about to go against the San Diego Chargers, where in third quarter action the
00:04:36teams tied 10-10.
00:04:37Lenny Dawson hitting his favorite receiver, Otis Taylor, and so the Chiefs go ahead in
00:04:43the third period 17-10.
00:04:46Now, we are in the fourth quarter.
00:04:50A pitch out to Warren McVeigh.
00:04:52As you saw, Warren, the scat back from the University of Houston, moves 15 yards for
00:04:56a touchdown, then slips.
00:04:58A little of the joy out of it.
00:05:00He's embarrassed, but don't take it seriously, Warren.
00:05:03You're ahead 24-10.
00:05:05Only 20 seconds left in the game.
00:05:07The pitch out to Dawson Napotilak out of the University of Iowa.
00:05:10Seven easy yards, touchdown.
00:05:12The Chiefs win it 31-10 over the San Diego Chargers.
00:05:17And, of course, next week, the Chiefs against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday Night Football.
00:05:261928.
00:05:27General Electric televises the first remote TV broadcast as Al Smith accepts the presidential
00:05:33nomination.
00:05:341971.
00:05:35Where is GE today?
00:05:37After over 40 years, we're right where you'd expect us to be, with as much TV know-how
00:05:42as anyone in the world, with remarkable one-touch color tuning, with the brightest, richest
00:05:47color picture in GE history.
00:05:49At General Electric, we build every television as if we had to use it ourselves.
00:05:56That's me, Errol Parsegian, the guy on top, after one of last season's great Notre Dame
00:06:01wins.
00:06:02Getting to the top is one thing, but staying there proves you're a real champ.
00:06:06And that's as true of wagons as it is of football.
00:06:08Year after year, the Ford wagon team is tops.
00:06:11With all their better ideas, it's easy to see why.
00:06:14Ford's magic door gate lets you call the options, just like a quarterback.
00:06:17So you can drop straight back, or roll out, even with the window up.
00:06:22It's the proven door gate nobody's topped.
00:06:26Ford knows when you've got a winning combination, you stick with it.
00:06:29That's why the newest wagon of the year, the midsize Grand Torino Squire, offers you
00:06:34an instant replay on Ford's winning magic door gate.
00:06:37Down like a tailgate, out like a door, even with the window up.
00:06:42Why do more people get their wagons from Ford dealers than any place else?
00:06:46Because when it comes to wagons, nobody swings like Ford.
00:06:49America's number one wagon.
00:06:51Another better idea from Ford.
00:06:55Soldiers Field, Chicago.
00:06:57Rebuilt, revamped, an attractive place to play.
00:07:00The Bears against the New Orleans Saints.
00:07:03The surprise quarterback of the year, Kent Nix of the Bears.
00:07:07Throwing to Bob Wallace.
00:07:09Mis-tackled. Another mis-tackled.
00:07:12And Mr. Wallace is on the way.
00:07:1418 will not get near him.
00:07:16The Bears lead it 7-0.
00:07:19Now it's second quarter action.
00:07:21The game is tied at 7-7.
00:07:23And it's Mr. Nix again.
00:07:26Dick Gordon, the National Football League's leading receiver a year ago.
00:07:30Another touchdown pass.
00:07:32And the Bears lead it 14-7.
00:07:35Still the second quarter.
00:07:37And watch this handoff.
00:07:39Kent Nix to Don Scheid.
00:07:41Now watch Mr. Scheid.
00:07:43He throws.
00:07:4423 yards to George Farmer.
00:07:47And it's a touchdown.
00:07:48The Bears lead it 21-7.
00:07:51Bears are having an amazing year for a lowly rated team in the preseason estimates.
00:07:56Another handoff.
00:07:57Kent Nix.
00:07:58And it's another touchdown as Don Scheid runs off right tackle.
00:08:0228-7. We're still in the second quarter.
00:08:05Now there are only seconds left in the first half.
00:08:08Tony Baker has the ball for the Saints.
00:08:10Watch closely.
00:08:11Keep watching closely.
00:08:12That's George Seals.
00:08:14Keep watching closely.
00:08:16And watch Mr. Seals.
00:08:18He went in there.
00:08:19He wound up with the football.
00:08:21The Bears score again.
00:08:2335-7.
00:08:25They go on to win the contest 35-14.
00:08:29They have been an enormous surprise this year, especially Mr. Kent Nix.
00:08:3535-14.
00:08:38Well, that's Tiger Stadium, Detroit, Michigan.
00:08:41And the atmosphere is always festive there.
00:08:43How they love the Lions.
00:08:45The Lions are leading 7-0 in the first quarter.
00:08:48That's Greg Landry.
00:08:4926 yards to Steve Owens, the former Heisman Trophy winner from Oklahoma.
00:08:54It's 14-0.
00:08:55The Lions over the Packers.
00:08:59Now the score is 17-0.
00:09:01The Lions.
00:09:02That's Scott Hunter, rookie quarterback from Alabama, for the Packers.
00:09:05On a bootleg around the left side.
00:09:07He picks up 16 yards.
00:09:11We are in the second quarter, remember.
00:09:1317-0.
00:09:14The Lions.
00:09:15Now watch that handoff from Hunter to Donnie Anderson.
00:09:18Donnie, you can run the option pass play beautifully.
00:09:21Clips for the touchdown to the rookie, John Brockington from Ohio State.
00:09:25And so it's 17-7 Lions.
00:09:28We're still in the second quarter.
00:09:30You must watch this play.
00:09:32Greg Landry.
00:09:34Now watch Larry Walton.
00:09:36Lands with inbounds and it's a touchdown.
00:09:39Detroit 24, the Packers 7.
00:09:42These teams put on quite a show.
00:09:44We're in the third quarter.
00:09:45This is Bill Triplett running left.
00:09:47Again, watch closely.
00:09:49Triplett fumbles the football.
00:09:51McCoy picks it up.
00:09:53Big Mike McCoy from Notre Dame.
00:09:56Carries down deep into Detroit territory.
00:10:00Now we're still in the third quarter.
00:10:02And this play you must again watch very closely.
00:10:06Donnie Anderson.
00:10:07Was he over or not?
00:10:09The official says he was over.
00:10:12The official says the score is 24-14.
00:10:16But the Lions don't believe it.
00:10:18The defensive captain, middle linebacker Mike Lucci, 53, is in a rage.
00:10:23Teammates have to hold him back.
00:10:24You saw the marker go down.
00:10:26Personal foul.
00:10:27Unsportsmanlike conduct, rather.
00:10:30And look at Lucci.
00:10:32Ha!
00:10:33Don't complain too much, Mike.
00:10:35It's not going to help.
00:10:37The score stands and Lucci is a defeater.
00:10:40But we continue with the action.
00:10:43Greg Lander in the third quarter.
00:10:46He is again looking for Larry Walton.
00:10:50Larry Walton is absolutely unattended.
00:10:54Walton takes the football.
00:11:00Mis-tackled by Ellis.
00:11:02Another mis-tackle by Willie Wood.
00:11:07Still perhaps another mis-tackle.
00:11:11Now watch this.
00:11:12Well, maybe not a mis-tackle.
00:11:15But a tackle that perhaps could have been executed.
00:11:18And that.
00:11:19There, there was help from a blocker, as you saw.
00:11:22So it's a 60-yard play.
00:11:24A touchdown for Larry Walton.
00:11:26The Lions lead it 31-14.
00:11:29Now we're in the final quarter.
00:11:31A minute left.
00:11:32The score is 31-21.
00:11:34The ancient one, Zeke Bradkowski.
00:11:36Hits Rich McGeorge, the tight end from Elon.
00:11:39And so the final score, Lions 31, Packers 28.
00:11:46And we'll remind you, we have a rematch of that game.
00:11:49The Lions and the Packers coming up November the 1st from Milwaukee.
00:11:52And here at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas.
00:11:54The Cowboys out in front of the New York Giants 13-6.
00:11:57And NFL Monday Night Football is being brought to you by Ford,
00:12:00who invites you to see all the 72 better ideas at your Ford dealers.
00:12:04By the two-bladed razor, Gillette introduces the world's first razor
00:12:08with two separate blades.
00:12:10The new Gillette Track 2 twin-bladed cartridge shaving system.
00:12:14And by Sears Tire and Auto Centers, where you'll find diehard batteries
00:12:18and a complete line of quality tires.
00:12:20And we'll be ready for the second half kickoff between the Giants
00:12:23and the Cowboys after this word from our local station.
00:12:27Longstreet tries to break a conspiracy of silence Thursday night on ABC.
00:12:34.
00:12:54Back at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas.
00:12:56We're about to get the second half underway.
00:12:58The Dallas Cowboys out in front of the Giants again 13-6.
00:13:02Pete Gogolak was kicked two field goals for the Giants.
00:13:07Little kick to Cliff Harris, 43, and Dwayne Thomas, number 33.
00:13:14From the hash mark.
00:13:20Dwayne Thomas.
00:13:22And he can move. Just activated this week.
00:13:26Cliff Harris will field it in the end zone. He'll run it out.
00:13:32Harris over the 15 to the 18 yard line.
00:13:3674 roller is there. Joe Green, 33, is there.
00:13:41Very quickly, John, were you happy with the way your team played in the first half?
00:13:45I don't think they played as well as they're capable.
00:13:48I think they're not going to change much from what they did last week.
00:13:52We've got a new quarterback in the second half.
00:13:54Yep, a deviation.
00:13:55So it looks like they're going to change a little bit.
00:13:57He was welcomed with a simmering round of boos.
00:14:02You know something about that.
00:14:05We'll call it a mixed greeting for Craig Morton.
00:14:07First from 10, from the 18, Calvin Hill.
00:14:11Calvin Hill breaking tackles, moving over to the 27 yard line.
00:14:15One of the things that's always interesting to me,
00:14:17watching any quarterback, is how does he call the game?
00:14:20Coach Landry has indicated before this contest he wanted his Cowboys to run.
00:14:24He leaves the play calling primarily up to the quarterback that's in.
00:14:27So we'll see how much, if any, Craig's play calling affects this contest.
00:14:32His setbacks are Walt Garrison, 32, Calvin Hill, 35.
00:14:35Bob Hayes is a split end, 22.
00:14:37Billy Turek's a tight end, 87.
00:14:39Lance Allworth, the flanker.
00:14:42On second and short yardage, make it a yard.
00:14:44From the 27 yard line, the Cowboys own 27.
00:14:49Calvin Hill.
00:14:50Calvin Hill.
00:14:52Yardage for the first down, over the 30 to the 32.
00:14:55Ralph, at 55, is there.
00:14:57This is the thing we thought Dallas would be able to do going into this contest.
00:15:01Not to degrade New York's defense, but Dallas is a strong running team.
00:15:06They led the league last year in running.
00:15:09They have been fairly successful this year in running,
00:15:11but not as much as they were last year.
00:15:14Coach Landry has emphasized his need to get back to last year's fashion in the running game.
00:15:18First and 10 for the Cowboys, the ball on their own 32 yard line.
00:15:21Craig Morton with his first pass.
00:15:24And he'll scramble.
00:15:28Morton picking up about 5 yards.
00:15:32Well, it's just stupid for anybody to boo a quarterback for doing that,
00:15:35because that's exactly what he's coached to do.
00:15:37That's what he should do.
00:15:38If he's got any sense at all, he'll do it every chance he gets.
00:15:40That's right.
00:15:41Why risk injury?
00:15:42Morton has been injury prone anyway.
00:15:44There's Craig's statistic.
00:15:45In 1970, he was fifth in the National Football Conference in passing,
00:15:50and, Don, you're exactly right.
00:15:52Quickly, Frank, were you happy with the way your former team performed in the first half?
00:15:55I was.
00:15:56Considering Ron Johnson is not here, Tucker Fredrickson is not here,
00:15:59they have lost much of their offense.
00:16:01They fought well defensively.
00:16:03They trailed 13 to 6 through.
00:16:05We watched Calvin Hill on 2nd and 5 behind Ralph Neely.
00:16:07A great block by Ralph Neely.
00:16:09A great block by Lance Allworth, too.
00:16:12He really did a super job.
00:16:13You're right.
00:16:14And, you know, Don, Calvin Hill has shaken up,
00:16:18and he's holding his right knee.
00:16:20The knee.
00:16:23Calvin, as most people know, has been plagued with a few injuries himself.
00:16:26This one looks to be fairly serious.
00:16:29Great shot of it there.
00:16:30It is his knee.
00:16:31You know, Don, we spent much of the time last year
00:16:34talking about the abundant number of injuries
00:16:38in football and ascribed at least some of them from time to time
00:16:41to the absence of training a year ago.
00:16:43Let's take another look at the run,
00:16:45and we'll get back to the injury point later.
00:16:48You'll see a quick pitch to Calvin Hill, number 35.
00:16:50Ralph Neely is 73 out leading this.
00:16:53Dwayne Thomas cut back in and cut out Freddie Dreyer.
00:16:57You didn't see Allworth's block, but his was super as he came in.
00:17:00This is Spire Lockhart that's coming in to hit.
00:17:03You know, let's see.
00:17:04That's a heck of a lick right there.
00:17:06He's a good tackler.
00:17:07If that's where he hurt it,
00:17:08that's very similar to the way Danny Reeves tore his knee up
00:17:11in St. Louis a few years ago.
00:17:15So with timeout, the score, the Dallas Cowboys, 13,
00:17:18the New York Giants, 6.
00:17:23Every day is moving day at North American Van Lines,
00:17:27and to make sure every move goes smoothly,
00:17:29their trucks use STP oil treatment.
00:17:31These trucks have to haul tremendous loads under all conditions.
00:17:34Through cross-town traffic, cross-country miles,
00:17:3724 hours a day, 365 days a year.
00:17:40Through it all, STP helps keep them running smoother,
00:17:43cooler, quieter, longer in all kinds of weather.
00:17:46Try STP oil treatment in your family car and run razor sharp.
00:17:55Flair writes with absolute silence, total smoothness.
00:18:00Flair's rich, vivid line can be fine or bold at your discretion.
00:18:06Flair has a smooth, tough nylon point that stays sharp.
00:18:10Flair won't dry out because the cap seals with a distinctive click.
00:18:18Flair, the new way to write, now in dramatic colours.
00:18:23Flair.
00:18:28Calvin Hill limping off the field,
00:18:31we suspect favouring his right knee after being upset on the sidelines,
00:18:35picking up yardage for a first down for the Cowboys.
00:18:38Danny Reeves, the player coach, has come in at one setback.
00:18:41Duane Thomas is the other setback, first and 10 for the Cowboys.
00:18:44They're on their own 47-yard line.
00:18:46Lance Allwood, motion right.
00:18:49Duane Thomas.
00:18:52Well, Duane Thomas is back.
00:18:57To see him run with that ball and listen to this crowd respond to it
00:19:01was quite spine-tingling, I would say,
00:19:03because he did duck to the outside real well.
00:19:06Number 33, Duane Thomas, got good block by Reeves, 30.
00:19:09And the fellow does have some unusual ability.
00:19:12He can really run with that football.
00:19:14Immediate acceleration.
00:19:16Exciting player to watch the statistics of a year ago
00:19:19speak for themselves.
00:19:21The average is what's really impressive to me.
00:19:23On 151 attempts, he averaged 5.3.
00:19:27Another first down for the Cowboys.
00:19:29They're on the Giants 42.
00:19:31Duane Thomas again.
00:19:33And he's something else.
00:19:35To the 34-yard line goes Duane Thomas.
00:19:37Oh, is this crowd alive.
00:19:39They've wanted Duane back all along, and they are really alive.
00:19:43I really don't believe they did in the beginning, Howard,
00:19:47because the crowd, the people here in Dallas were very negative for Duane.
00:19:51He came out and spoke very bluntly about some of the things he didn't like,
00:19:55a lot of other things that we don't know about.
00:19:57But the general feeling was that Duane got what was coming to him,
00:20:01and that was he's not going to play football.
00:20:03It's amazing how these things can be forgotten
00:20:05when he runs two times and carries 20 yards.
00:20:09Pickup of 8 yards for Duane Thomas.
00:20:11The play fake, Morton going to Danny Reeves.
00:20:15Reeves can't hold on to the football.
00:20:17Tim Files there, number 58, along with Willie Williams,
00:20:20but Reeves just dropped the football.
00:20:26Craig Morton.
00:20:28I imagine they'll get on their coach about dropping that one.
00:20:30There's Alex Webster.
00:20:31He's saying, what's going on out there?
00:20:34What he's saying is Dallas beginning to play up to its potential,
00:20:38taking the run mainly,
00:20:40and then the occasional pass just to mix things up.
00:20:44Third down and four.
00:20:45Both these teams battling to stay at least one game
00:20:48behind the Washington Redskins.
00:20:50The Washington Redskins undefeated in the NFC's Eastern Division.
00:20:55Number 40 on third and four.
00:21:00Ralph Heck defending against Danny Reeves.
00:21:02Nolan Lakes came in there pretty well.
00:21:04Then Frank, I don't know whether it was a missed assignment or what it was.
00:21:07Could be a quick screen out to the flat,
00:21:09but no one blocked Nolan Lakes, number 76.
00:21:12That's true, and excellent coverage by 55.
00:21:14Ralph Heck on the screen.
00:21:17Nolan Lakes, who came to the Giants from San Francisco,
00:21:20a good one, an 11-year veteran,
00:21:22as Mike Clark comes onto the field for the Cowboys.
00:21:26Cowboys out in front of the Giants, 13 to 6,
00:21:2912 minutes remain in the third period.
00:21:32This kick from 41 yards out.
00:21:35He has already hit on 42 yards and 41 yards.
00:21:42Rocky Thompson will run it.
00:21:47Thompson out to the 17-yard line.
00:21:51Make it the 18.
00:21:52Rocky Thompson coming out of the end zone.
00:21:54And with timeout, the score is Dallas 13, the New York Giants 6.
00:22:01At the Bondurant Driving School in Ontario, California,
00:22:04we teach professionals how to handle a car in an emergency.
00:22:07And it's rough on tires.
00:22:09So we brought our long mileage tire here to prove how tough it is.
00:22:13Sears Silent Guard Dynaglass.
00:22:15Braced with two fiberglass belts and four tough body plies
00:22:19to take anything this course can throw at them.
00:22:21We've driven tires like these over 40,000 highway miles.
00:22:24The mileage you get depends on how you drive.
00:22:26Dynaglass tires, only at Sears.
00:22:30The battery in this car is virtually brand new.
00:22:33The battery in this car is two years old.
00:22:37Now, after the lights have been on for almost four hours,
00:22:41now let's see which car starts.
00:22:45The one with the two-year-old battery.
00:22:47A two-year-old Sears Die Hard.
00:22:50A Die Hard with extra power to start your car when most batteries won't.
00:22:56Sold only at Sears.
00:23:00Back at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas.
00:23:02We'll tell you as quickly as we can that Calvin Hill
00:23:05apparently is not seriously injured.
00:23:07He had a hyperextension of the right knee.
00:23:09We have been informed he may or may not return to the game.
00:23:12Walt Garrison, who's also out of the lineup, is not injured.
00:23:17The Giants take over first and ten.
00:23:18They're on their own 18-yard line.
00:23:20Fran Tarkenton, quarterbacking all the way,
00:23:22puts Rich Houston to the right, McNeil to the left.
00:23:30Duhan in motion.
00:23:32Tarkenton on the sprint out.
00:23:35Tucker can't hold on to it.
00:23:38Bob Tucker drops the ball.
00:23:45And we now pause five seconds for local station identification.
00:23:50Bob Tucker coming back to the Giants' huddle.
00:23:52It'll be second and ten.
00:23:54Fran Tarkenton, as Bobby Duhan and Joe Morrison, as setbacks.
00:23:57Tarkenton, 11 for 18, but only 61 yards, or rather 102 yards.
00:24:03102 yards.
00:24:04Had one drop that possibly could have been a touchdown.
00:24:09One second down from the Giants' 18.
00:24:13Here's McNeil.
00:24:18Pickup of about seven yards.
00:24:21Herb Adderley there to make the stop.
00:24:23Defensively, the Cowboys remain the same.
00:24:25Adderley at the left corner, back 26.
00:24:27Cornell greens, the tight safety.
00:24:28Cliff Harris, the free safety, number 43.
00:24:30Mel Lowe, the free safety, number 43.
00:24:32And the Giants' 18-yard line.
00:24:34The Giants' 18-yard line.
00:24:36And the Giants' 18-yard line.
00:24:38And the Giants' 18-yard line.
00:24:40Harris, the free safety, number 43.
00:24:42Mel Renfro, the right cornerback.
00:24:44Chuck Howley, Leroy Jordan, Dave Edwards, the linebackers.
00:24:47Howley, always the weak side linebacker.
00:24:50Lillian Puer, the tackles.
00:24:51Larry Cole and George Andre are the defensive ends.
00:24:56Bob Tucker now with three catches for 34 yards, as we look at Herb Adderley.
00:25:01Tarkenton has already thrown on third down and two.
00:25:04He comes out with the stacked eye.
00:25:07Houston, motion to his left.
00:25:10Goes to Houston.
00:25:12And moving up quickly with Mel Renfro.
00:25:15And I believe Tarkenton deliberately drilled that in the ground.
00:25:23That will bring up fourth down.
00:25:26Tom Blanchard will come on for the Giants.
00:25:29Charlie Waters and Cliff Harris will drop deep for the Cowboys.
00:25:33A little over ten minutes remain to be played in the third period here in Dallas.
00:25:37The Cowboys in front, 13 to 6.
00:25:40Tom Blanchard.
00:25:42Coming into the game with a 39.7 putting average.
00:25:46Has averaged 43 this evening.
00:25:50Harris.
00:25:54Joe Green drops Harris just over the 40-yard line at the 41.
00:26:00All right, let's take another look at Dallas on the offense.
00:26:02They appeared to be making their move just a couple of moments ago.
00:26:05But once again, the Giants put it together on defense and blocked them off.
00:26:10So I assume that you're even happier about that, Frank.
00:26:14I think they're doing fine, considering the problems they've had.
00:26:16Not a question.
00:26:17The player coach is in the ballgame with Craig Morton when he came in.
00:26:21They took out Walt Garrison.
00:26:22Is there a reason for that?
00:26:23Is he in there to help Craig Morton?
00:26:24No, the only thing I can think of, Frank, is they intended to play Dwayne Thomas at fullback tonight.
00:26:29This was their intentions before the game.
00:26:32So I just assumed Dan, there he is on his play pass.
00:26:34Wow.
00:26:36Lockhart picks it off.
00:26:42Lockhart returning the interception to the 43-yard line.
00:26:46Danny Reeves, the player coach whom we were talking about just a moment ago,
00:26:50had his option pass picked off.
00:26:53Well, we just saw Dallas on offense.
00:26:56Have a look at the Giants.
00:26:57Look at the Giants.
00:27:02You see at the end zone, this is a play-action pass,
00:27:04the same thing that Danny Reeves threw in the Green Bay Championship game in 1967 for a touchdown.
00:27:10He was hit just as he threw that one.
00:27:13Got penetration from the Giants defense, and it was picked off.
00:27:18First and 10 for the Giants from their own 43-and-a-half-yard line.
00:27:23Duhan coming in motion.
00:27:28Willie Young with a good block for Franz Harkenten.
00:27:31Harkenten looking for a receiver.
00:27:34The crowd wants that call intentionally grounding, but no soap.
00:27:39You know, this year such a call is utterly discretionary with the officials,
00:27:43and they presumably are prone to call it much more this year than in past years,
00:27:48where the basic judgment was, is there a receiver somewhere within the area.
00:27:53I believe that pass fairly thrown in the general direction of Bob Tucker.
00:27:57Of course, the partisan crowd didn't like it.
00:28:00Yeah, it's hard.
00:28:02Well, anyway.
00:28:03I'm trying not to be partisan.
00:28:04Well, no, I think that's true.
00:28:08Do it where you can.
00:28:11A lot of them look like they're thrown away.
00:28:13On second down, the Giants with the football in their own 43-and-a-half-yard line.
00:28:17Houston again in motion.
00:28:19Duhan with the ball.
00:28:22Up over the 45 to about the 47.
00:28:26Leroy Jordan meets Bobby Duhan.
00:28:33Leroy's the one that also calls the defensive signals or audibles.
00:28:36Playing off the first block.
00:28:38Number 55 gets up.
00:28:40Does make the tackle on Duhan.
00:28:42Jordan, I think, is a great middle linebacker.
00:28:45He's most instrumental in the coordination that he achieves by knowing it.
00:28:49There's Coach Landry talking to Craig Martin on the side.
00:28:53They're trying to conjure up some offense.
00:28:57Third and seven.
00:29:01Harkinson gets away from Cole.
00:29:05Fires to Tucker.
00:29:09Bob Tucker at the Dallas Cowboys 42-yard line.
00:29:13Cornell Green for the tackle.
00:29:15Good enough for the first down.
00:29:17Fran is unbelievable the way he can't throw just going full speed.
00:29:21He can zip that thing in there.
00:29:22He's done it for a long time, and I don't think anyone would question the fact that he can do it really better than anybody else.
00:29:27Incredible, as you would describe it.
00:29:30Not only does he retain command of the downfield, Don, but in your words, superb peripheral vision.
00:29:36That's something close to what I would probably say.
00:29:39Of course, I have never said that, but that's close to what I could probably say.
00:29:43119 yards on 13 completions.
00:29:45First down for the Diaspora on the Cowboys 42-yard line.
00:29:48This is Bobby Duhan.
00:29:50Duhan tripped up by Jethro Pugh, big number 75.
00:29:54And notice Pat Toomey is in there, number 67, who's replaced George Andre, who usually is in that position.
00:29:59I don't know whether Andre has been injured or whether they're just playing him or not.
00:30:05George Andre kneeling on the sidelines, Don.
00:30:07He is fine.
00:30:09Pickup of about a yard and a half for...
00:30:14At what juncture tonight, Don, will you proclaim it an important series of downs?
00:30:18There's Pat Toomey, by the way.
00:30:20Right after you've done it a couple, two or three times, I guess.
00:30:24Just follow your lead, coach.
00:30:25Second down and nine.
00:30:31Harkenton for McNeil.
00:30:33Very good throw.
00:30:35Great route by McNeil.
00:30:36They had...
00:30:38Had him turn around pretty good and Harkenton did get hit.
00:30:41Let's see it again.
00:30:42Clip to McNeil, number 18, on a sideline pattern.
00:30:45Let's see what he does to Herb to get him to turn.
00:30:48That little stutter step right there was a good move, like he's going to go deep.
00:30:53Got to that sideline, waited a little bit, the ball was there, and just stepped right up.
00:30:58Here's the fast rush on that same play.
00:31:00Pat Toomey, number 67.
00:31:02Bob Lilley, 74.
00:31:04Bob Lilley, 74.
00:31:06And Toomey is the one that gets in there.
00:31:09Came around the waist, I don't imagine it hurts that much.
00:31:11I'll tell you, Harkenton's durability is amazing.
00:31:16Bill Gregory has come in for a jet throw cue in the Cowboys' front four.
00:31:21He's number 77, probably, for a fast rush on third and nine.
00:31:28Duhan!
00:31:30Inside the 20-yard line is Bobby Duhan.
00:31:33Circled there by Cliff Harris.
00:31:37Bobby Duhan circling out of the backfield.
00:31:40And Harkenton right on target.
00:31:42The Cowboys have been playing what they call a 40 defense,
00:31:45which means the middle linebacker usually goes to the strong side, where the wing is set.
00:31:50Circling both backs out of the backfield, you'll see him come to the strong side.
00:31:53There's Calvin Hill, number 35, coming back, so obviously he is OK.
00:31:56Looks like he's had some tape on his knee.
00:31:59That's good news for the Cowboys.
00:32:01As I was saying, the middle linebacker does go to the strong side.
00:32:04Duhan came out, he was man-to-man on Howley, got to the inside, and Francis hit him.
00:32:10The Giants with another first down. They're on the 16-yard line of the Cowboys.
00:32:14Gregory is out, jet throw cue is back in for the Cowboys.
00:32:17Houston in motion right, again Duhan.
00:32:19Big hole!
00:32:21Duhan hit at the 10-yard line.
00:32:25Chuck Howley, 54, on the tackle.
00:32:28First minutes, 30 seconds remain in the third period.
00:32:31Seven carries for Bobby Duhan, 23 yards.
00:32:35It seems to me, Frank, that they're running mainly in the middle, and they're doing a good job.
00:32:40The two guards for the Giants, Bob Holland and Van Horn, along with Larson,
00:32:44must be doing some damage up there to Lillie Pugh and Leroy Jordan,
00:32:49because most of their plays either originate in the middle or wind up in the middle off some sort of a draw.
00:32:58Stacked eye on the left side.
00:33:00In motion is Rich Houston, on second down and three.
00:33:03Morrison is hit hard, and he really is hit hard by Leroy Jordan.
00:33:06He fumbles the football.
00:33:07Dave Edwards has got it.
00:33:11Leroy Jordan really popped Joe Morrison.
00:33:16Out came the football. Dave Edwards recovers, I believe, our seventh fumble of the evening.
00:33:21That's exactly right, and the Giants have lost three fumbles.
00:33:26Give an assist to Dave Edwards to Leroy Jordan.
00:33:30All right, we'll take a look at it again.
00:33:31Joe Morrison's coming in. You'll see Dave Edwards from the outside.
00:33:34That ball's going to pop right out in front of him.
00:33:36There it is. He reaches down, picks it up.
00:33:38Starts to slay down, and Tarkington, very alert, he says,
00:33:41Wait a minute, he can run.
00:33:42Can you imagine Fran Tarkington trying to tackle Dave Edwards?
00:33:47He did, with some help.
00:33:49First and ten for the Cowboys. They're on their own 17-yard line.
00:33:52Dwayne Thomas.
00:33:53Ralph Neely out in front.
00:33:56Thomas moves over the 25 to the 27.
00:34:00Latest word on Calvin Hill, Frank, is that he had a slightly sprained knee.
00:34:04It's been wrapped. You saw him return to the field just a few seconds ago,
00:34:08and we expect that he'll be seeing action.
00:34:11There's Dwayne Thomas on the rerun of the play just witnessed,
00:34:15and the balance of Dwayne Thomas, not lost by the long layoff, manifests itself.
00:34:21Look at that.
00:34:22Yes, sir, he's learned his lessons from Meredith.
00:34:27I believe it was Tom Landry who said last year,
00:34:29This man has the potential to become another Tim Brown and Gail Sayers wrapped into one.
00:34:349.6 feet.
00:34:36Here he is again.
00:34:39Very close to the first down is Dwayne Thomas.
00:34:44He needed to reach the 27.
00:34:51Dwayne Thomas picks up the first down.
00:34:55Tim Files is constantly improving as a middle linebacker.
00:34:58Frank, we saw him in a couple of games last year,
00:35:01and he was new, or fairly new to that position.
00:35:03Made some mistakes.
00:35:04He seems to be more in the area this year.
00:35:06He's doing a good job.
00:35:07He was in on that last tackle.
00:35:09He's been in on a lot of them for the Giants this year.
00:35:11Number 58.
00:35:14On first and 10, the Cowboys on the run.
00:35:18On first and 10, the Cowboys operating from their own 27.
00:35:21Danny Reeves.
00:35:22Nye out in front, 61.
00:35:24Nye with a good block.
00:35:25Reeves moving over the 40 to the 47 yard line.
00:35:29John Douglas moving over for the tackle.
00:35:32You know, you watch this team far and on on the ground.
00:35:36You know how great that offensive line is,
00:35:38with the Johnny Nylons, the Blaine Nyes, and all the rest.
00:35:41The Ralph Neelys.
00:35:43And you wonder why they ever turn to the Aaron.
00:35:45Why they've been doing it all game long, Don.
00:35:47You've made the point repeatedly that the original game plan
00:35:50was stay on the ground.
00:35:51Why the variation?
00:35:53Well, that's a good question, Howard.
00:35:57I don't really know.
00:35:58I think that's the quarterback's decision.
00:35:59As we did mention, they're great runners.
00:36:01But I do think you have to put the ball in the air some too.
00:36:06Cowboys with first and 10.
00:36:07They have the ball in their own 46 yard line.
00:36:09Flags are up.
00:36:11The Giants appear to move offside.
00:36:13I hope Ted Forty moves that graphic up again,
00:36:16because it points up what I did say,
00:36:18the Cowboys' power in rushing.
00:36:21There it is.
00:36:22With the tackle.
00:36:23There it is, Frank.
00:36:24522 rushes a year ago.
00:36:262,300 yards this period.
00:36:28Dallas in nine rushes has made 81 yards,
00:36:32a nine yard average per rush.
00:36:34I'll tell you.
00:36:35They didn't give Meredith that kind of offensive help
00:36:38when he was quarterbacking.
00:36:40I didn't have you to help me then either, Howard.
00:36:44And you saw the penalty against the Giants.
00:36:46Five yards.
00:36:47Down remains the same.
00:36:48First and five.
00:36:49Cowboys now inside Giants territory.
00:36:51That's the Giants' 49 yard line.
00:36:53Lance Alwes, motion left.
00:36:57Martin.
00:36:58Looking deep for Bob Hayes.
00:37:01And that's going to be a pass.
00:37:04That's one reason why you want to put up in the air every now and then.
00:37:07That's right.
00:37:08But only after you've laid the foundation.
00:37:10Absolutely right, Howard.
00:37:11That was a great throw.
00:37:13Between Athis and Joe Green.
00:37:16The completion.
00:37:18Right on target.
00:37:21Bob Hayes.
00:37:24He is really something special.
00:37:25It really is good to have somebody like that on your side, man,
00:37:28because he can really get open.
00:37:29Here it is again.
00:37:30Craig sets back throws.
00:37:32And Bobby, you know, it's just there's not anybody really can keep up with him.
00:37:35It's not a discredit to anybody on defense.
00:37:38You get him man to man.
00:37:39He's caught four passes tonight for an even hundred yards.
00:37:43This sure is good to have him on your side.
00:37:46All right.
00:37:47By Clark with the conversion attempt, it's good.
00:37:54Here's a good block here by Blaine Nile on that pass a while ago.
00:37:58Craig does have plenty of time.
00:38:00Blaine Nile is really one of the truly great young guards in the league from Stanford.
00:38:04Very bright guy.
00:38:05Working on his master's degree.
00:38:06May have got it last year, in fact.
00:38:08There's Turkey Lurkey himself.
00:38:09Rapid Robert.
00:38:10An NFL Monday Night Football, the New York Giants versus the Dallas Cowboys
00:38:14continues from the Cotton Bowl with the score.
00:38:16The Cowboys 20, the Giants 6.
00:38:23What would you say if some college kids asked to borrow your car for 100,000 miles?
00:38:28We said yes to the auto tech class at Chafee College, California.
00:38:32And they drove a Ford Pinto with optional two liter engine and disc brakes
00:38:36night and day for 100,000 miles.
00:38:39They did their own servicing and repairs and formed their own opinions.
00:38:43The Pinto's rack and pinion steering is really solid.
00:38:47There's hardly any body roll at all in the car.
00:38:50I'm really surprised that the car, this light, has the response that it does.
00:38:53It really accelerates.
00:38:54It's really a lot of fun to drive.
00:38:55It's really a tight car.
00:38:57The brakes were very good considering all the mileage
00:38:59and no maintenance was ever performed on them.
00:39:02It's got real tight steering and handles easy on turns.
00:39:05The Pinto has real good acceleration, and it keeps up with everything else on the road.
00:39:11You won't need 100,000 miles to know Pinto's different where it counts.
00:39:15Once around the block, we'll show you.
00:39:17Test drive of Pinto at your Ford dealers.
00:39:23That's the situation with 3 minutes and 40 seconds remaining
00:39:26in the third period from Dallas, Texas.
00:39:29The Cowboys out in front of the Giants.
00:39:31Mike Clark put the ball in the air.
00:39:34Deep is Rocky Thompson.
00:39:40Thompson upended at about the 24-yard line,
00:39:44running into Dwayne Thomas,
00:39:47and I believe that's the third tackle that Dwayne Thomas has made.
00:39:50This guy does want to play some football, doesn't he?
00:39:52Dwayne Thomas.
00:39:54Dwayne Thomas,
00:39:56and number 43, Cliff Harris.
00:40:01The Giants take over at 1st and 10.
00:40:03They have the ball on their own 25-and-a-half-yard line.
00:40:08Out to the left comes McNeil.
00:40:10Giants in the stackeye.
00:40:12This is Rich Houston, motion left.
00:40:15And this is Bobby Duhan.
00:40:17Joe Morrison with the block.
00:40:18Duhan with the tackle.
00:40:20And this is Bobby Duhan.
00:40:22Joe Morrison with the block.
00:40:23Duhan to the 30-yard line, hit hard by number 55, Leroy Jordan.
00:40:27Out of Excel, Alabama.
00:40:30Boy, he's some football player.
00:40:31They got him listed at 220,
00:40:33and, Don, I know he plays many times at 210.
00:40:36That was my old roommate.
00:40:38Yeah, he stretches to get to 220.
00:40:40But he takes everything he's got and throws it at them.
00:40:43He sure does a good job.
00:40:45Pickup of 5 yards for Duhan.
00:40:46And those linebackers for the Cowboys.
00:40:48Howley is 35 years old.
00:40:49Jordan is 30.
00:40:50Dave Edwards is 32.
00:40:52And they're really active.
00:40:54From the 30-yard line.
00:41:03Duhan again out of the backfield.
00:41:05Charlie Waters makes the stop.
00:41:09Duhan circling around, pulling up.
00:41:13Charlie Waters has come in at free safety for the Cowboys.
00:41:20First down for the Giants.
00:41:22The ball on the 45-yard line.
00:41:24You know, this Saturday on ABC NCAA football,
00:41:27the Longhorns of Texas take on the Razorbacks of Arkansas
00:41:30in Little Rock, Arkansas.
00:41:32That's Saturday at 4 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time here on ABC.
00:41:36Houston in motion left.
00:41:39Duhan again, offended at the 45.
00:41:42Just about getting back to the line of scrimmage.
00:41:50Fine blocking.
00:41:52We're out tonight by this Giant offensive line.
00:41:54Greg Larson, the center, 53.
00:41:56We'll look now at Leroy Jordan.
00:41:59Well, we pointed out Leroy a while ago.
00:42:00Made a good tackle.
00:42:01We'll take another look at him here in slow motion.
00:42:03You'll see Pugh shift a little bit.
00:42:06All this is done.
00:42:07These audible calls were called by Leroy
00:42:09from his middle linebacker position.
00:42:11That's his seventh tackle tonight.
00:42:13And he has four assists on top of that.
00:42:15Second down and 10.
00:42:17Operating from their own 45.
00:42:18The Giants put both wide receivers to the right.
00:42:20Duhan now comes in motion.
00:42:23Parkinson.
00:42:25Offended by Jethro Pugh.
00:42:28Big Jethro Pugh.
00:42:29All 6'6", 270 pounds of him.
00:42:32They had a big headline in the paper
00:42:34when Jethro was a rookie.
00:42:35They said, what is a Jethro Pugh?
00:42:37And through his fine years playing for the Dallas Cowboys,
00:42:40I think certainly everybody in this area
00:42:42knows what a Jethro Pugh is.
00:42:43He's one of the very finest defensive tackles in football.
00:42:46You know, I think we're starting to see something
00:42:48that happens quite frequently.
00:42:49We saw Oakland do it last week.
00:42:50We've seen San Francisco do it.
00:42:52Fresh defensive linemen.
00:42:53As Pugh comes out, Bill Gregory, 77, comes in.
00:42:56Pat Toomey has also come in to replace George Andre.
00:42:59We're seeing more and more of that in pro football.
00:43:02Mature passing situation.
00:43:04Third down and 18.
00:43:05The Giants on their own 37.
00:43:09Parkinson going deep and is over the head,
00:43:12way over the head of Bobby Duhan.
00:43:15Well, the fans are having a ball now.
00:43:17That team is playing the way it can.
00:43:2268,000 here in the Cotton Bowl this evening.
00:43:25Cowboys and the Giants both trying to stay one game
00:43:29behind the Washington Redskins.
00:43:31Bob Hayes now has dropped deep to receive
00:43:34the punt of Tom Blanchett of the Giants.
00:43:36Bob Hayes along with Charlie Waters.
00:43:38And Bob Hayes will put up a little period
00:43:42Bob Hayes will put up a little fear in the heart.
00:43:53Bob Hayes at the 15.
00:43:57Watch out.
00:44:02Could not stay inbound.
00:44:03Bob Hayes out of bounds at the 22-yard line.
00:44:07Joe Green there.
00:44:12All right.
00:44:13I think this is another good move by Bobby.
00:44:15They were trying to set up the return over to the left.
00:44:17Just not going to make it.
00:44:18He does have the speed to do something like this.
00:44:20A lot of times you'll see guys caught back here,
00:44:22but he's just reversing his field.
00:44:24Totally on his own decision.
00:44:26Again, I think it's another good decision.
00:44:28Bobby's not the biggest guy in the world.
00:44:29He knows his biggest asset at this club is stay healthy.
00:44:34He's trying to tightrope that thing down there.
00:44:36He did step out of bounds.
00:44:37Maybe he realized that.
00:44:39Anyway, he didn't run into him.
00:44:40He stepped on out of bounds.
00:44:42First and 10 for the Cowboys.
00:44:44They're operating from their 22.
00:44:46Dan Reeves.
00:44:47Dwayne Thomas to setback.
00:44:52Dan Reeves.
00:44:53Rayfield right out in front.
00:44:55Reeves up over the 30 to the 32-yard line.
00:44:59Roy and Ralph Neely, 73 and 70.
00:45:02Rayfield right.
00:45:03When they go with those quick tosses,
00:45:04they really lumber out of that line.
00:45:07Some offensive line.
00:45:08Really, I think their offensive line done
00:45:10and perhaps Oakland's.
00:45:12We're running out the quarter, by the way, Frank.
00:45:14Just one second to go and that's it.
00:45:18I really think they and Oakland
00:45:19have the top offensive lines around.
00:45:22Could well be.
00:45:23And that's the end of the third quarter with the score.
00:45:26Dallas Cowboys 20, the Giants 6.
00:45:28And we'll return after this word from our local station.
00:45:32Tony Curtis and Roger Morristar
00:45:34as The Persuaders, Saturday night on ABC.
00:45:39♪♪
00:45:50I'm Willie Wood of the Green Bay Packers.
00:45:52That's the way I like to crack down in action.
00:45:55I like to rack up this drug traffic too.
00:45:58♪♪
00:46:10Monday night football from Dallas, Texas.
00:46:12The Cotton Bowl.
00:46:13The Cowboys out in front of the Giants 20 to 6.
00:46:16Cowboys with the football.
00:46:17They have second down and one yard to go.
00:46:19They're operating from their own 32.
00:46:21Greg Morton going all the way in the second half.
00:46:25Roger Staubach with the entire first half.
00:46:28Dwayne Thomas.
00:46:31Dwayne Thomas upended by Joe Green.
00:46:33The Giants tight safety.
00:46:39Pickup of about four yards.
00:46:40Good enough for the first down.
00:46:43Those are our statistics for the three quarters.
00:46:47And we look down from our Goodyear blimp.
00:46:50Captain Don Holtzman.
00:46:53Piloting our craft.
00:46:55I've got it.
00:46:59First and 10 for the Cowboys.
00:47:00A quick toss is to Reeves.
00:47:02Oh, beautiful play there by Douglas.
00:47:06Number 51 moving over from his linebacking position.
00:47:09Drops Reeves for a four yard loss.
00:47:11You have no way of knowing for sure.
00:47:12But Douglas was with Dallas.
00:47:14And that appeared to be an audible from here.
00:47:16He could have read that audible.
00:47:17And he moved from his inside position just at the snap of the ball
00:47:20to go out and stop the quick pitch to the outside.
00:47:24And into the Giants defensive unit on second and long yardage.
00:47:27The passing situation.
00:47:28Come to fresh linemen.
00:47:29Dave Roller, 74.
00:47:31And number 80, Henry Reeves.
00:47:32Roller tackled.
00:47:33Reeves defensive end.
00:47:34And the Giants have the lead.
00:47:36The Giants have the lead.
00:47:38Henry Reeves.
00:47:39Roller tackled.
00:47:40Reeves defensive end.
00:47:43From the 31-yard line.
00:47:45Morton with both speedy receivers.
00:47:46Allworth and Hayes to the right.
00:47:50Reeves out of the backfield.
00:47:51He comes with the screen to Dwayne Thomas.
00:47:55Thomas fumbles the football.
00:48:00Dwayne Thomas fumbles the football at the 40-yard line.
00:48:05And I believe
00:48:07it's Ralph Peck
00:48:10or Henry Reed.
00:48:11Make it Henry Reed, number 81.
00:48:13Just come into the football game as we cover Dwayne Thomas' fumble.
00:48:17That is eight fumbles that we have seen this evening.
00:48:21You see Dwayne, he carries the ball a little bit on the outside.
00:48:24This is criticized by most coaches as the best way to carry it,
00:48:27which is quite obvious.
00:48:28But he did get a great lick right in the chest by number 55,
00:48:32Ralph Peck, which might cause most folks to fumble.
00:48:36On first and 10 from the Cowboys 41-yard line,
00:48:39the Giants with the football.
00:48:43Harkington.
00:48:44Fires over to Tucker.
00:48:45Tucker at the 30-yard line.
00:48:47Leroy Jordan, 55, there to make the stop.
00:48:51And I know Francis does not want to go deep
00:48:53against this Cowboy defensive team.
00:48:55He really does not figure that he has the time to do it.
00:48:58But Don, he has to get on the scoreboard.
00:49:00Yeah, he sure does.
00:49:01Here's Bobby Duhan as he's coming out of the backfield.
00:49:05You never know for sure, but sometimes, I don't know.
00:49:08He's in the area.
00:49:09Yeah, that's right.
00:49:10You throw it closest to the biggest number of blue jerseys
00:49:13and hope they catch it.
00:49:14That one could have been, I don't know.
00:49:16Francis, you're probably throwing it to Tucker.
00:49:17He was just a little bit low.
00:49:18Good for a first down on the Cowboys 30-yard line.
00:49:21Houston now goes left.
00:49:22McNeil is flank left.
00:49:26Duhan.
00:49:28Moving perhaps for about three yards.
00:49:34Tracking Larry Cole, defensive left end for the Cowboys,
00:49:37number 63.
00:49:42Cowboys defensive unit remaining intact from the start of the game
00:49:46with the exception of Charlie Waters,
00:49:49who is replaced with Harris.
00:49:52Charlie Waters with free safety, number 41.
00:49:54Second down and eight yards for the Giants.
00:49:56We're on the Cowboys 28.
00:50:00Duhan over the middle and open.
00:50:01Beating Chuck Howley inside the 15.
00:50:08Well, that's nine of them.
00:50:11Bob Highland is upset.
00:50:15Nine fumbles in one ballgame, Frank.
00:50:17When do you remember that last?
00:50:20I have never seen one like this one.
00:50:21Matt Merkison came up here a while ago.
00:50:23He says the reason why the Cowboys were fumbling,
00:50:25they weren't used to playing with a dry ball.
00:50:28Here's Chuck Howley who goes back.
00:50:30He slips a little bit.
00:50:31He's covering Duhan.
00:50:34And actually he beat...
00:50:36He saw the fumble.
00:50:38And I believe that is Leroy Jordan that picks it up,
00:50:40number 55 from his middle linebacker position
00:50:43who came back in there.
00:50:46And with timeout, the score is the Cowboys 20, the Giants 6.
00:50:53With all the excitement on TV these days,
00:50:56who says what you watch it on has to be dull,
00:50:58not Panasonic, not even in black and white,
00:51:01because we make TV that pops out of portable radios,
00:51:04TV that shuts up so you can listen to tape,
00:51:07TV that's really easy to take because it's the world's smallest.
00:51:11These days, Panasonic gives you more exciting ways
00:51:14to watch TV than anyone else in the world.
00:51:16And for us, that's very exciting.
00:51:18Panasonic, just slightly ahead of our time.
00:51:24Some people love cola so much, they can't stop drinking it.
00:51:28And for them, there's RC.
00:51:30With RC, you get a great cola taste that's easy on the syrup,
00:51:34easy on the gas, so it doesn't feel like too much.
00:51:38Right, O.J.?
00:51:43RC, a great cola taste that's easy on the syrup,
00:51:46easy on the gas, for people like O.J. Simpson,
00:51:49who can't stop drinking cola.
00:51:54Looking at the Cowboys' huddle,
00:51:5511 minutes and 40 seconds remain to be played in this football game
00:51:58from Dallas, Texas.
00:51:59The Cowboys out in front of the Giants, 20 to 6.
00:52:01First and 10 for the Cowboys,
00:52:03following the ninth fumble of this football game.
00:52:05They have the ball in their own 13-yard line.
00:52:09Craig Morton with the bootleg.
00:52:12It's a 2-ax.
00:52:152-ax, offended there by Willie Williams.
00:52:19The 2-ax moving to the 34-yard line,
00:52:21and Craig Morton really hit that football.
00:52:25This was the...
00:52:26They have this play in their offense going this direction,
00:52:29and not going the other direction,
00:52:30because Freddy Dreier pursues.
00:52:33They feel that he is...
00:52:34He uses his speed, utilizes his speed,
00:52:36to catch a lot of plays from the backside.
00:52:38He takes a step and comes right down the line.
00:52:41You won't see the Cowboys go the other direction with that.
00:52:43They'll always come to their left.
00:52:45They're not always going to their left.
00:52:47Tonight, they're going to come this direction with it.
00:52:51First and 10 now for the Cowboys.
00:52:53They're on the 34-yard line.
00:52:57To the right goes Oliver.
00:52:58Hayes is to the left.
00:53:00This is Danny Reeves.
00:53:01Blaine Nye out in front, blocking.
00:53:05Carl Ockhart coming up from his free safety position.
00:53:09Danny Reeves at the 38-yard line.
00:53:14How about that one?
00:53:16I don't believe that's exactly correct.
00:53:18I think New York has only lost,
00:53:20I believe, 2 of their fumbles.
00:53:22They have lost 4 of theirs,
00:53:23and Dallas has lost 4 of theirs.
00:53:29Second down now.
00:53:31Cowboys from their own 38-yard line.
00:53:35Second down and 7.
00:53:37Block moving with 10 minutes remaining in the football game.
00:53:42Cowboys in their own I formations,
00:53:43and all work to the right.
00:53:46This is Dan Reeves.
00:53:49Dan Reeves stopped by Jim Files.
00:53:52After a pickup of about 3 yards.
00:54:02And we may have a Giant down on the field.
00:54:04We do.
00:54:05This is Joe Green.
00:54:07Joe Green, tight safety for the Giants.
00:54:11NFL Monday Night Football,
00:54:12the New York Giants versus the Dallas Cowboys
00:54:15continues from the Cotton Bowl
00:54:17with the score, the Cowboys 20, the Giants 6.
00:54:23Right now, 72 midsize cars have frozen 71 prices.
00:54:28But of all leading midsize cars,
00:54:30one has unfrozen styling,
00:54:32unfrozen design, unfrozen engineering.
00:54:36Ford's Torino.
00:54:38This is Grand Torino, one of 9 new models.
00:54:41Torino's price is frozen,
00:54:43but it's been restyled, redesigned,
00:54:45reengineered for 72.

00:54:50so we built a new, more rugged frame and body.
00:54:53We wanted to give you more precise handling,
00:54:55so we designed a new suspension system.
00:54:57We've added new front disc brakes, standard.

00:55:04Torino has moved ahead for 72
00:55:06with all new styling and major engineering changes.
00:55:09Everybody can offer you frozen 71 prices,
00:55:12but everybody can't offer you a completely new car,
00:55:16which sort of sets us apart.
00:55:18Your Ford dealer's 72 Torinos.
00:55:20Only the price is frozen.
00:55:24The Cowboys with the third down and two
00:55:26from their own 42-yard line.
00:55:28Joe Green, who has come off the field, appears to be all right.
00:55:31In fact, if you can read lips, I think you probably heard him say,
00:55:33I'm all right.
00:55:35Joe Green in his second year out of Bowling Green.
00:55:37Played middle guard there.
00:55:39Now plays the tight safety.
00:55:43And a cramp in his right calf, we've been informed,
00:55:45on third and two.
00:55:47Two tight ends are in.
00:55:49Truex and Mike Ditka before the short yardage blocking.
00:55:54Reeves.
00:55:56Over the 45 to the 47.
00:55:58Plenty of yardage for the first down.
00:56:00Player coach Danny Reeves.
00:56:02Well, when you look at this whole game in perspective, Frank,
00:56:05one gets the feeling, always watching Dallas,
00:56:07that with their great personnel,
00:56:09let's watch Nyland open this hole.
00:56:12Number 76, one of the great ones out of Iowa.
00:56:18Some kind of hole is right.
00:56:21Another first down for the Cowboys.
00:56:24Ball on their 47-yard line.
00:56:30That's Alworth in motion.
00:56:32Dwayne Thomas. Watch out.
00:56:35Cutting back Dwayne Thomas inside giant territory to the 42.
00:56:39As I was saying, you get the feeling they can explode at any time,
00:56:43yet overall, as we've pointed out, it's not been a well-played game.
00:56:46Dallas has contained.
00:56:48Let's take another look at this one as Dwayne Thomas
00:56:51shows more of his versatility as a runner.
00:56:56Lane Nye leading the way for him there, as you just saw.
00:56:59Number 61.
00:57:01We're back to that offensive line again.
00:57:03But Dallas has contained the Giants with its defense.
00:57:07And I'll tell you, someday they're going to put it all together, John,
00:57:10and win the Super Bowl for you.
00:57:14On first and 10 on the Giants.
00:57:1642 again. Dwayne Thomas very close to another first down.
00:57:21This time behind the blocks of Rayfield Wright and again Blaine Nye.
00:57:26Now they're chewing up the Giants' defensive line,
00:57:29which has done so well up to a point, but is showing signs of fatigue.
00:57:33We were saying it.
00:57:35Yeah, you're going to watch Jimmy Files now,
00:57:37the middle linebacker, 58, get trapped here.
00:57:41Rayfield Wright, number 70,
00:57:43who is the tackle that doesn't get quite as much credit
00:57:46as the other offensive tackle, who is Ralph Neely,
00:57:48but he is a big, strong offensive tackle that's done a great job for Dallas.
00:57:52The ball on the Giants, 32.
00:57:54A half a yard short of another first down.
00:57:56All work goes to the right.
00:57:59Danny Reeves picks up the first down.
00:58:02Moving inside the Giants' 30-yard line.
00:58:05Well, it's a relieved Don Meredith who sits next to us now, Frank.
00:58:09He sees the clock ticking away.
00:58:11Seven minutes, nine seconds left,
00:58:13and he's looking forward to watching himself tomorrow
00:58:16on Greg Garrison's Gold Diggers.
00:58:18Don, of course, en route to becoming a film star.
00:58:22He is relaxed.
00:58:23Can I quote you on that one, too?
00:58:26Joe Green has come back into the backfield for the Giants
00:58:29in their defensive secondary.
00:58:31Alex Webster looking on.
00:58:32Time running out.
00:58:33Six minutes and 47 seconds remain.
00:58:35Cowboys from first down.
00:58:37Danny Reeves with the football.
00:58:39Again, great blocking out in front of Danny Reeves.
00:58:41Would you believe he fumbled the football?
00:58:44Unbelievable.
00:58:45I don't believe it.
00:58:46I don't either.
00:58:47Well, that's ten fumbles,
00:58:49and that's why we can't say this has been a well-played game.
00:58:52I believe Danny hurt his knee on that one, too, it looked like.
00:58:54He's getting up a little slow, but he's walking off.
00:58:57Carl Lockhart coming up with that football.
00:58:59Watch Reeves.
00:59:00Reeves has what they term is a glide to him.
00:59:02He just kind of scoots along, does follow the blocking very well.
00:59:05Let's see what...
00:59:06And there he had the ball carrying it again a little bit loose,
00:59:08and someone grabbed it from the backside.
00:59:10I believe that was Spider Lockhart.
00:59:12North Texas State picked that one up.
00:59:14In case you're wondering about the record for fumbles
00:59:16by two teams in a game in the NFL,
00:59:18it's 14, and it happened three times.
00:59:22Tom can't believe it either,
00:59:23if you saw that picture of him there on the sideline.
00:59:25From near the goal line,
00:59:26Tarkenton whips it out to Rich Houston, incomplete.
00:59:31You saw where he missed him, and that was to the outside.
00:59:34You're going to miss one of them.
00:59:35That's where you miss it if you throw it inside.
00:59:37There's Spider.
00:59:38What do you say, Spider?
00:59:39Nothing.
00:59:40He said nothing.
00:59:41Everything's all right.
00:59:42Listen.
00:59:43Did you know that Frank Gifford,
00:59:45on September 17, 1961,
00:59:47played in a game against the Cardinals
00:59:49that had 14 fouls,
00:59:52played in a game against the Cardinals
00:59:54that had 14 fumbles?
00:59:55I did not.
00:59:56Six by the Giants and eight by the Cardinals.
00:59:59I had three of them.
01:00:00Now that you're reading that book,
01:00:01would you go down there and see
01:00:02who has the record for the most fumbles in one season?
01:00:06Second down, operating from the half-yard line,
01:00:08the Giants trailing 20 to 6.
01:00:13Tarkenton trying to go deep.
01:00:17Wrong side of Rich Houston.
01:00:19Houston drawing double coverage.
01:00:22Cornell Green back there.
01:00:23Herb Adderley back there.
01:00:24Green, 34.
01:00:25Adderley, 26.
01:00:29I don't envy the job of Fran Tarkenton
01:00:31trying to get out from his own end zone,
01:00:35the ball on the half-yard line,
01:00:36looking across the line at Bob Lilly,
01:00:38Jeff Gropieu, Larry Cole, George Andry.
01:00:43One of the reasons that you see
01:00:44a lot of passes from this situation
01:00:46is that you can expect the defense
01:00:47to be playing very tight.
01:00:48They want to contain you and keep you in the hole.
01:00:50This would indicate more often than not
01:00:52that you're going to get man-to-man coverage
01:00:53in the secondary.
01:00:54However, they did get double coverage
01:00:55the play before.
01:00:58Again, the pass on third down.
01:01:02Adderley is there defending against McNeil.
01:01:05Incomplete.
01:01:11And now a problem for the Giants.
01:01:14There is the man who holds the record
01:01:16for most individual fumbles in one season.
01:01:20Number 17, Dallas Cowboys.
01:01:22What can I say?
01:01:23Why don't you let me know
01:01:24when y'all are going to do this?
01:01:26I didn't do it tonight, though.
01:01:27That's one thing.
01:01:28The Cowboys are doing better this year
01:01:29than they did last year, aren't they?
01:01:32Tom Blanchard will have to punt.
01:01:34He cannot kick from his spread punt.
01:01:36He's going to have to hurry it.
01:01:38He's going to have to hurry it.
01:01:41He's going to have to hurry it.
01:01:43He has to stay inside the end zone.
01:01:45And he just did get it off.
01:01:47He got a flag.
01:01:48He got a flag as number 71, Rodney Wallace,
01:01:54has hit Tom Blanchard.
01:01:55Another flag is now down.
01:01:56It's a 45-yard line.
01:01:59Flags, flags, flags.
01:02:01Rodney Wallace is a rookie.
01:02:03Bobby Hay is returning that punt.
01:02:05Without the 40, but we'll wait and see
01:02:07because flags are down.
01:02:11Bobby Bell was the referee,
01:02:12and he was right on that situation back there.
01:02:16Tommy Bell.
01:02:19Bobby Bell plays for Kansas City.
01:02:20Not too bad.
01:02:21We're going to see him next Monday.
01:02:23You're getting ready early, Don.
01:02:24I've had my bell rung so many times
01:02:26I get those bells mixed up.
01:02:27Number 76, Kansas City Chiefs, Bobby Bell.
01:02:32We'll take a look at it.
01:02:33Tom Blanchard is the punter.
01:02:36Right in it.
01:02:37You'll see him come across.
01:02:38Number 71, Rodney Wallace,
01:02:40and he did turn him upside down.
01:02:42That'll cost you.
01:02:43Yep.
01:02:44As a matter of fact, Frank,
01:02:45as you observed before we took the antonyte,
01:02:47the Chiefs are playing back now
01:02:49to their form of two years ago
01:02:51when they won everything.
01:02:52They really are.
01:02:53Tied with Oakland in their division.
01:02:55Running into the kicker is DePaul,
01:02:57an automatic first down,
01:02:58a five-yard assessment.
01:03:00That's different from rubbing the kicker,
01:03:01isn't it, Frank?
01:03:02It is.
01:03:03By 10 yards, as Fran Tarkington
01:03:04looks over that defense.
01:03:06Bobby Duhan goes in motion.
01:03:10Again, trying to hit Houston deep.
01:03:13And again, Houston.
01:03:14With double coverage.
01:03:15He was covered that time, wasn't he?
01:03:18Maybe you should look around for one
01:03:20that's putting single coverage.
01:03:23One of the men covering Houston on that play
01:03:27was number 34, Cornel Green.
01:03:30Cornel was once a cornerback,
01:03:32not a safety.
01:03:33And as we watch the play again,
01:03:35what I was saying is that Cornel broke in
01:03:38against a wide receiver named Frank Gifford,
01:03:40who made Mint's meet-up.
01:03:42Now watch this.
01:03:43Watch Cornel come up.
01:03:44That's it.
01:03:46But the next year,
01:03:47when Frank couldn't run so well,
01:03:49he went against Cornel,
01:03:50and Cornel chewed him up.
01:03:52I thought you were going to stop, Howard.
01:03:54That first cover.
01:03:55On second down from the five-yard line.
01:03:58Again, Duhan goes left.
01:03:59And again, Tarkington.
01:04:01Duhan goes left.
01:04:02And again, Tarkington puts it in the air.
01:04:04This time, the screen pass to Morrison.
01:04:06Larson out in front with the block.
01:04:07Morrison over the 10 to about the 11-yard line.
01:04:10Great pursuit by Jethro Pugh.
01:04:12Came from his defensive tackle
01:04:13to come out and play that screen.
01:04:15Nipped Morrison by the heels
01:04:16and didn't finally bring him down.
01:04:22Good cover of about five yards.
01:04:24We mentioned Pittsburgh and Kansas City
01:04:25next Monday night.
01:04:27We'll also be in Minnesota
01:04:28the following Monday night
01:04:29for Baltimore and Minnesota.
01:04:30And what a beauty that'll be.
01:04:33Still, it's a definite threat this year
01:04:34against anyone, as you know.
01:04:36Though beaten by the Browns yesterday,
01:04:37they still have the golden arm of Terry Bradshaw
01:04:40and their growing building team
01:04:41under Chuck Knoll.
01:04:43Kansas City Super Bowl winners
01:04:44two years ago with the capacity
01:04:46to beat anybody.
01:04:49Five minutes remain to be played.
01:04:50The Giants trail by 14.
01:04:53Tarkington firing to McNeil.
01:04:55He has it.
01:04:56Up over the 30 to the 34-yard line
01:04:57is Clifton McNeil.
01:04:59He's going to play Waters
01:05:00to make the tackle.
01:05:04Brandon has been brave
01:05:05in this stretch of plays right here.
01:05:07He's been putting that thing in the air
01:05:08and that's dangerous.
01:05:09You'll see him come back, set,
01:05:10drill it right in there.
01:05:12Clifton McNeil ran it down in.
01:05:13It was between Howley and Jordan
01:05:16and right in front of Herb Adderley,
01:05:17number 26.
01:05:18Actually, Herb missed it.
01:05:20He's got to be brave.
01:05:21He's got four minutes and 38 seconds left.
01:05:23He trails by 14.
01:05:25He needs more than bravery.
01:05:26He needs America.
01:05:29He needs to go up on top
01:05:30and his speediest receiver is Rich Houston.
01:05:32He puts Houston to the left.
01:05:34McNeil is to the right.
01:05:35Now, Duhan goes in motion
01:05:37from the 32-yard line on first and 10.
01:05:40Morrison.
01:05:43Wow.
01:05:45Number 77, Gregory,
01:05:48comes over to take a pop
01:05:50as Leroy Jordan stops Morrison,
01:05:52pick up perhaps four yards.
01:06:00Three minutes, 50 seconds remain.
01:06:02The clock is running.
01:06:05Second down and eight yards for the Giants.
01:06:08Get through a few, gets the rest.
01:06:10Bob Lilly came in.
01:06:12Lilly moved over.
01:06:13Gregory, 77, went to Pugh's spot.
01:06:18From the 34, Duhan motion left.
01:06:24Trying for McNeil deep.
01:06:25Adderley with good coverage.
01:06:28The fifth, sixth pass in a row
01:06:30headed in Herb Adderley's direction.
01:06:34It's an indication that
01:06:36not so much they disrespect her,
01:06:38but they really do respect Mel Renfroe
01:06:40who plays the other side.
01:06:41Mel has been all pro as a quarterback
01:06:43and as a safety man.
01:06:45Herb Adderley also is an all pro
01:06:46with the Green Bay Packers.
01:06:48A lot of years.
01:06:49A great defensive secondary.
01:06:51Adderley, Willie Wood, Bobby Jeter,
01:06:54Tommy Brown
01:06:56during the years of Lombardi.
01:06:5939 interceptions over this man's career.
01:07:04Notes the book on cornerback play.
01:07:06Third down.
01:07:08Third down and a long eight for the Giants.
01:07:11They're operating now from the 33.
01:07:12Duhan motion left.
01:07:17Tucker trying to get up for that first down.
01:07:21He even puts the ball out front.
01:07:23He'll be short.
01:07:25Tarkenton says we want to go on fourth down.
01:07:28I like your attitude, friend.
01:07:31Admire your courage and question your judgment.
01:07:36310 left in the football game.
01:07:38The clock continuing to run.
01:07:41Tarkenton 21 of 37.
01:07:43221 yards.
01:07:45Now on fourth down with two yards.
01:07:47And each time Tarkenton has had short yardage
01:07:50of two yards,
01:07:51he has gone to the air for his first down.
01:07:54We might see him run around a little bit this time.
01:07:56He's going to get up and start it.
01:07:58And he is not.
01:08:01I suppose that's why he has been going to the air.
01:08:04Larry Cole breaking through to dump Bobby Duhan.
01:08:11Well, let's take a look at it again.
01:08:12This is something that we didn't expect.
01:08:14Obviously, Dallas did because they closed it up pretty good.
01:08:16That's Larry Cole, 63.
01:08:18Dave Edwards is 52 coming in there.
01:08:21And they were right.
01:08:22They were doing what they were supposed to do.
01:08:23That's one thing about coordinating defenses.
01:08:25They don't really play the emotional side of it.
01:08:28And with timeout, the score,
01:08:30the Giants 6, the Dallas Cowboys 20.
01:08:35This is a revolutionary new shaving system from Gillette.
01:08:39To shave you close, we put in our finest blade.
01:08:42And then to shave you even closer,
01:08:45we put in another one.
01:08:48Gillette introduces the world's first razor
01:08:50with two separate blades.
01:08:52The new Gillette Track II.
01:08:54Two blades.
01:08:55To get whisker, one blade could miss.
01:08:58The new Gillette Track II twin blade shaving system.
01:09:01It's one blade better than whatever you're using now.
01:09:06I think all antiperspirants are about the same.
01:09:08You know, mine works for a while until somebody hassles me.
01:09:11You know, I gotta go.
01:09:12If your antiperspirant doesn't do what you hired it to,
01:09:15fire yours and hire ours.
01:09:17Right Guard Antiperspirant.
01:09:19Get the drying agent that really helps keep you dry.
01:09:21Stops odor too.
01:09:22Does my antiperspirant keep me dry?
01:09:25Uh, yeah.
01:09:26Today it's drip dry.
01:09:28Then fire yours and hire ours.
01:09:30Ours is Right Guard.
01:09:35From the Goodyear Blimp, the America,
01:09:39flying over the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas,
01:09:41we get a good view from our pilot Don Koskonek.
01:09:46It's good to know they haven't changed pilots.
01:09:48First content for the Cowboys.
01:09:52Dwayne Thomas.
01:09:53Flag goes down as Dwayne Thomas goes down.
01:09:55Met there by Jim Files, number 58.
01:09:58Douglas, 51.
01:10:00You know, Don, there's 200,000 cubic feet of helium in that blimp.
01:10:03Can you believe that?
01:10:04We established that before.
01:10:06And, Don, if they changed pilots, we'd have a scoop.
01:10:09Did you know the length of it's 194 feet?
01:10:13Did you know there's 7,560 lights on the side?
01:10:17It's 80 miles of wire.
01:10:19Who's the cameraman up there, Don?
01:10:21Oh, it's Bill Sullivan.
01:10:23I bet a lot of people didn't know those things.
01:10:25But I also didn't know who was it that was interested in it.
01:10:30Holding.
01:10:31Dallas Cowboys.
01:10:32Joe Williams has come in as one setback replacing Danny Reeves.
01:10:38Joe Williams, number 36.
01:10:40Rookie out of Wyoming.
01:10:42There it is.
01:10:43That's the story of this football game.
01:10:45Spread them around pretty evenly.
01:10:47Craig Morton.
01:10:48Another.
01:10:49Wayne Thomas bobbles the football.
01:10:51The Giants recover, I believe.
01:10:53Yes, it is.
01:10:55Bottom of the pile, number 58, Jim Files.
01:11:00It's a pity.
01:11:02Incidentally, that was a stroke of genius by our diminutive producer
01:11:06putting up the fumbles just before the 11th one came along.
01:11:10Another tangible evidence of his great ability.
01:11:13Well, records are good for something.
01:11:17He just drops that one.
01:11:19That one went right in the stomach.
01:11:21You can't do what without what.
01:11:24You can't score without the football.
01:11:26The clock is moving with 2 minutes and 19 seconds.
01:11:29Parkington goes down.
01:11:31The flag is down at the 40-yard line.
01:11:36It's a pity we only have 2 minutes and 15 seconds left to play.
01:11:40We'd like to play a little more time.
01:11:42We might get to the 14-fumble record done.
01:11:45That would certainly be very interesting.
01:11:48It would mean a lot to all of us.
01:11:51That flag appears to be for offensive interference.
01:11:56Of course, the Dallas Cowboys would decline.
01:12:01Well, here's the relaxed Freddy Dreier.
01:12:04Quite a football player during this past offseason.
01:12:07Freddy Dreier went down and looked around South America.
01:12:09He got lost in the river down there.
01:12:11Great surfer. Got a couple of motorcycles.
01:12:15Not like my kind of fella.
01:12:17I thought you'd like him, Don.
01:12:18Second down and 15.
01:12:21Go on! Go on!
01:12:24Hit by Waters and Harris.
01:12:27Tom Stensick has replaced Leroy Jordan as the middle linebacker.
01:12:31Trying to get him as much experience as they possibly can.
01:12:37And with timeout, the score,
01:12:40the Dallas Cowboys 20, the New York Giants 6.

01:13:38One of ours.
01:13:39White Owl. Ours.
01:13:44Calvin Hill, number 35.
01:13:46The right knee sprained and wrapped, as you can see.
01:13:49The point we wanted to make earlier tonight about injuries was
01:13:52that last year we blamed a lot of them on the loss of training time
01:13:55because of the pension strike.
01:13:57And it's only fair to bring out that this year we've had
01:14:00an even greater abundance of injuries and there was no pension strike.
01:14:04And we think we owe it to our viewers and listeners
01:14:08and to the players themselves to make the point.
01:14:11The Giants with the first down of ten.
01:14:13They're on the Dallas Cowboys' 40-yard line.
01:14:17Tarkenton firing for McNeil.
01:14:19McNeil working against Mel Renfro as Tarkenton goes down
01:14:22in the arms of Gregory.
01:14:25Bill Gregory, he's a rookie out of Wisconsin.
01:14:28He is big like all the Dallas Cowboys' front four men.
01:14:316'5", 255 pounds.
01:14:39The Giants desperately need to get on the scoreboard.
01:14:42They're going to have to go long.
01:14:44The Cowboys' front four are aware of this.
01:14:48If they can get on the scoreboard, they would have an opportunity.
01:14:54From the 40-yard line of the Cowboys, Tarkenton firing to Duhan.
01:14:59Duhan goes down by Chuck Howley, 54.
01:15:02Cornell Green, 34, was also there.
01:15:04The Giants in their hurry-up offense.
01:15:07Pickup of about 17 yards.
01:15:09That's the time the clock is moving.
01:15:11This will be a pass play.
01:15:12Fran will try for the completion.
01:15:16Or if he cannot complete it, he'll throw to kill the clock.
01:15:20He has three timeouts remaining.
01:15:22Houston to the right, McNeil to the left.
01:15:25Goes to Morrison, who tries to one-hand it.
01:15:27Incomplete.
01:15:29That will stop the clock.
01:15:30It will also give us a chance to tell you,
01:15:32our executive producer of ABC Sports is Brun Arledge.
01:15:35NFL Monday Night Football is produced and directed by

01:15:51Our unit manager, Art Thibodeau.
01:15:54Assistants to the producers, Bill Yerrick and Bob Goodrich.
01:16:00Diminutive, eh?
01:16:02On second down.
01:16:04Second and ten.
01:16:05The ball on the Cowboys' 24-yard line.
01:16:07McNeil goes to the right.
01:16:11McNeil, well-covered, talking, scrambling.
01:16:13Finds Duhan, who can't hold on to the football.
01:16:17Duhan, well-covered by number 54, Chuck Howley.
01:16:21I'd also like to thank our statistician, Jerry Kapstein,
01:16:25and our spotter, Frank Brown.
01:16:30And again, we'll remind you,
01:16:32Pittsburgh and Kansas City next Monday night.
01:16:38And of course, on Saturday, a real battle,
01:16:42as it always is, Arkansas and Texas.
01:16:44That's for Little Rock, Arkansas.
01:16:45That's 4 p.m. Eastern time here on ABC.
01:16:52Third and ten.
01:16:56There they are.
01:17:04McNeil.
01:17:05Six points.
01:17:08McNeil splitting.
01:17:10Charlie Waters, 41, and Mel Renfrow,
01:17:13Parkinson's drilling it on target.
01:17:16And I don't have to tell you, this is not over.
01:17:18Clifton McNeil, number 18.
01:17:21I really think...
01:17:23I don't know what they were doing.
01:17:24Looks like to me that...
01:17:25Had to be a combination.
01:17:26Yeah, Renfrow went outside.
01:17:28Looks like Waters was...
01:17:30It should have been a combination.
01:17:31He had him to the inside.
01:17:32They just split him in there.
01:17:33It's a good route.
01:17:34Good throw by Francis.
01:17:37And the man who is going to attempt this conversion,
01:17:40Pete Gogolak, I think we'll see in a few moments,
01:17:42trying an onside kick.
01:17:49Right through the heart is Pete Gogolak.
01:17:56Giants growing closer.
01:17:58There is the story.
01:17:59A minute and 16 seconds remain.
01:18:02Giants with three timeouts.
01:18:05And over the sidelines,
01:18:06Gogolak goes to Norb Hecker,
01:18:09the defensive coach.
01:18:10Matt Hazeltine is on Gogolak's right,
01:18:13linebacker coach for the Giants.
01:18:18These men coaching the special teams.
01:18:23There it is.
01:18:241.16 remains to be played.
01:18:27The decision will be whether or not to kick away
01:18:32and then use your timeouts
01:18:33to try and regain possession of the football.
01:18:35Dallas has one man deep.
01:18:38One man, Cliff Harris, has dropped deep.
01:18:41They are anticipating the onside kick.
01:18:42So am I.
01:18:44But again, they do have three timeouts remaining.
01:18:49And the Cowboys have got everybody.
01:18:54Everybody up with the exception of Cliff Harris.
01:18:56He's hanging back about the 25.
01:19:03Cliff Harris at about the 25.
01:19:05There it is.
01:19:06It has to travel 10 yards before it can be touched.
01:19:07It doesn't.
01:19:08It goes out of bounds.
01:19:10That will be the penalty assessed.
01:19:13Five yards.
01:19:15And we'll see the same thing all over again.
01:19:20Looking over in the far left side is Otto Brown
01:19:22and Joe Green, number 33.
01:19:24And I would anticipate that Joe Green is the man
01:19:26the Giants hope will be able to recover the onside kick.
01:19:30And boy, the Cowboys pulled up.
01:19:34They have eight men, nine men, ten men within ten yards.
01:19:38Again, the ball must travel ten yards
01:19:40before it can be touched.
01:19:41And here's Joe Green.
01:19:44Reed is also there.
01:19:45Those are receiver types with the good hands, as they say.
01:19:49Try the other side once.
01:19:51DeeDee Lewis.
01:19:56So with a minute and 12 seconds, the onside kick fails.
01:20:00So with a minute and 12 seconds, the onside kick fails.
01:20:06DeeDee Lewis.
01:20:08Also with the good hands.
01:20:11Again, the score, the Cowboys 20, the Giants 13.
01:20:15We approach the time, Frank, when we'll be seeing more
01:20:18of innovative Hank Scrams hijinks next week
01:20:21and Don Meredith's good friend Bobby Bell,
01:20:24whom we said earlier was 76 mistakenly.
01:20:27As I recollected, Don, he's 78.
01:20:30Good thinking, Howard.
01:20:32All right, we've seen many fumbles tonight.
01:20:35This is what the Giants are hoping for now.
01:20:37The first man will make the tackle.
01:20:38The second man will go for the football.
01:20:40Carl Lockhart uses one of the Giants' three timeouts.
01:20:43Pick up maybe a yard.
01:20:46Possession is what the Cowboys want to maintain if they can.
01:20:5145 seconds remaining to be played.
01:20:53Greg Morton moves over to the sidelines
01:20:55to talk to player coach Danny Reeves
01:20:57and head coach Tom Landry.
01:21:00Tom Landry has been the winningest coach
01:21:02in pro football over the past five years.
01:21:06And I played cornerback for him, Tom,
01:21:08when I played defense.
01:21:09He was a Giants safety man.
01:21:11And he has got one great head for football.
01:21:14Yeah, he has that.
01:21:16He can come up with a lot of numbers
01:21:18that'll just dazzle you.
01:21:20Made a star out of a man.
01:21:21Dazzle you.
01:21:22Made a star out of a man
01:21:23who spent much of the evening in our booth.
01:21:25Big Sam Huff number seven.
01:21:28He sure did for a fact.
01:21:30The violent world of Sam Huff.
01:21:33Second down and 11.
01:21:3645 seconds remain.
01:21:37The Giants a touchdown and a conversion away.
01:21:41Joe Williams.
01:21:43Pick up of about three yards.
01:21:48I'm kind of amazed
01:21:49when you look at head coach Alex Webster
01:21:51that Tom Landry,
01:21:52at this critical point in the game,
01:21:54would leave the rookie Joe Williams
01:21:56in the ballgame.
01:21:58And we see Henry Reid
01:22:00limping to the sidelines.
01:22:04Jim Kanicki will replace Reid.
01:22:08Third down now and eight.
01:22:12The Giants with one timeout remaining
01:22:14must stop this play
01:22:16to get possession for any kind of hope
01:22:18of pulling to a tie.
01:22:20Trainers Johnny Ziegle and Johnny Johnson
01:22:22work on Henry Reid.
01:22:26Appears as if Reid
01:22:29has damaged his left leg,
01:22:31whether it's a knee or
01:22:33what we cannot ascertain from here
01:22:35as we look again at Tom Landry.
01:22:38He has just sent Craig Morton back into the game.
01:22:45Joe Williams one setback.
01:22:47Dwayne Thomas the other setback.
01:22:50I think he said give the ball to Thomas.
01:22:52He's been around a little longer than
01:22:53Williams, but we'll see.
01:22:56This is Williams.
01:23:00Play ends up ended right at the line of scrimmage.
01:23:02And the Giants will use their final timeout.
01:23:05Ron Hornsby coming over along with Carl Lockhart.
01:23:08A report on Reid, Frank.
01:23:09He twisted his left knee,
01:23:11not believed to be at all serious.
01:23:16All right, fourth down now for the Cowboys.
01:23:20Giants keep in mind are out of timeouts.
01:23:24And Craig Morton has gone over to talk to Tom Landry.
01:23:27They will probably not attempt a field goal
01:23:30because it could be blocked.
01:23:33They can run
01:23:35the clock now, the official clock on the scoreboard
01:23:37shows 32 seconds.
01:23:39They can run one play.
01:23:40The Giants will be unable to stop the football.
01:23:42They have their offensive team
01:23:43gathered on the sidelines.
01:23:45They'll run out onto the field,
01:23:46try and get a play that they've already called
01:23:48on the sidelines into action.
01:23:50It'll be a pass trying to kill the clock.
01:23:52Norb Hecker to Carl Lockhart.
01:23:54Norb Hecker to Carl Lockhart.
01:23:58What he might be saying, I don't know,
01:23:59other than we have got to stop them
01:24:01if we're going to get a chance even for one play.
01:24:05In other words, go get the football.
01:24:11You know, Dallas used the rush this half done
01:24:13just the way you wanted them to,
01:24:14for 172 yards.
01:24:17They played a much better second half.
01:24:21On fourth down, 32 seconds remain.
01:24:24Hut, hut, hut.
01:24:25Oh, and off sides goes Douglas.
01:24:27I believe flags are in the air.
01:24:33John Douglas, number 51,
01:24:34I believe you saw a jump off sides for the Giants.
01:24:39Clock now shows 29 seconds.
01:24:44You'll see John Douglas.
01:24:47And he has to be a very embarrassed Giant.
01:24:51Two or three seconds.
01:24:52Very expensive at this point.
01:24:56More than that now.
01:24:57The Cowboys have fourth down and three.
01:25:07Greg Morth looking over to the yard markers.
01:25:09Joe Williams comes back to the brown set.
01:25:13Here's Williams.
01:25:14He does not pick up the first down.
01:25:16You'll see the Giants' offensive team rush onto the field.
01:25:18They've called a play already.
01:25:20The official will start the clock.
01:25:22The Giants out of timeouts.
01:25:23The official will start the clock
01:25:25when he sees both teams are on the field and set.
01:25:28The Cowboys obviously in the prevent defense.
01:25:3126 seconds remain.
01:25:33The Giants trailing by one single touchdown.
01:25:3517 seconds remain.
01:25:36The Giants trailing by one single touchdown.
01:25:40They're 70 yards away from that touchdown.
01:25:46Duhan, and he'll go out of bound.
01:25:48Pick up of about nine yards.
01:25:5117 seconds remain.
01:25:56Duhan, nine receptions here this evening.
01:26:00111 yards.
01:26:02I'll repeat.
01:26:0317 seconds remain to be played.
01:26:06Giants without timeouts.
01:26:08The Cowboys will be defending, Duhan, wouldn't you say,
01:26:11the sidelines in every way possible.
01:26:13Yeah, it's really a tough job, Frank,
01:26:15with this little time and no timeout.
01:26:17He is going to have to get out of bounds as quick as he can,
01:26:19so the chance to either go to the sidelines
01:26:22or try to take the chance and go deep.
01:26:24They've got these guys playing pretty deep back there, though.
01:26:27Almost picked off.
01:26:29Mel Renfrow almost picked off that pass.
01:26:33I might add, was almost complete to tip to McNeil.
01:26:37They're just playing back as far as they can.
01:26:39You'll see him trying to hit him at the line of scrimmage.
01:26:41McNeil goes down deep.
01:26:43He just pulls up in a hole.
01:26:46Renfrow, which you don't even see in the picture right now,
01:26:48is still another 10 or 15 yards down there.
01:26:50He's trying to time this.
01:26:52And there it is.
01:26:53Went back to the line of scrimmage.
01:26:55And there it is.
01:26:56Went right through his hands.
01:26:58As Frank mentioned, it was almost complete to McNeil after he went past.
01:27:02Now on third down, Tarkinton 25 of 45, 289 yards.
01:27:07The Giants battling to the end.
01:27:09They came into this game without their number one offensive threat,
01:27:12Ron Johnson.
01:27:14Still in there with seconds remaining.
01:27:16The clock moving.
01:27:18This will be the last play.
01:27:21So why not?
01:27:23Larry Harper can't find the handle.
01:27:25I think we'll have our last fumble of the evening.
01:27:29As time runs out.
01:27:3112 fumbles on the night.
01:27:33Alex Webster trots off.
01:27:35He's not too happy.
01:27:36There's Coach Landry, and I'm sure he is too.
01:27:39He really looks excited.
01:27:42The final score.
01:27:45Dallas Cowboys 20, the New York Giants 13.
01:27:48We'll return to the Cotton Bowl in just a moment.
01:27:54What kind of tires can drive down a snow-covered mountain,
01:27:58dig in and stop fast on hard-packed snow,
01:28:02or with studs, even stop on glare ice?
01:28:06The answer, Sears Dynaglass Ice and Snow tires

01:28:54And this is not the crew of the blimp.
01:28:57On my right, Don Meredith Howard in the middle, of course.
01:29:00And you probably heard the Dallas fans back up Old Ang's sign
01:29:04as the Cowboys left the field.
01:29:06The winner here this evening.
01:29:07And, of course, this is the last game the Cowboys will play in the Cotton Bowl.
01:29:10They move to Texas Stadium for their game in two weeks.
01:29:13Don, a lot of memories for you here.
01:29:15It really is, Frank.
01:29:17This Cotton Bowl is something I came up here,
01:29:19I spent a while ago to see the State Fair for the first time.
01:29:22Back this way one game.
01:29:24It was a great thrill for me to be here.
01:29:28Well, right now this is Frank Giffords saying so long for Don Meredith Howard Cosell.
01:29:33We're leaving the Cotton Bowl.
01:29:35Our air travel has been arranged through a promotional fee
01:29:37paid by United Airlines, the airline chosen by 20 of the 26 pro teams.
01:29:42Our blimp provided by the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company.
