00:00Welcome back to Soundhead International Raceway, completion of Heat 2 at Round 1 of the Shell Australian Touring Car Championship.
00:06Craig Lowndes, congratulations on a great win. Boy, there was some carnage out there.
00:09Thanks, Mark. We had a tremendous first start. We got away to a real blinder.
00:13And obviously, yeah, by the time I got to NGK, which is a couple of corners away, it was a red flag.
00:17The second start, obviously, just as good. And I got away to a handy little gap where I was able to hold it.

00:26Well, Craig Lowndes certainly did get a good start. And the points are very interesting after those first two races.
00:32Let's have a look at them now on the Shell Helix points score.
00:34John Bowen Lowndes tied right at the top there.
00:37And we go back to Glenn Seaton, Larry Perkins, Scaife and Richards.
00:40They're your top six. A really good day for Stephen Richards so far.
00:43We go back. Engle, Mark Poole, have a look at that.
00:46Mark Larcombe, then back to Dick Johnson, Bargwana and Longhurst sitting back there in 12th position.
00:51Time to check the grid for the next race as they line up and get themselves sorted out.
00:55Well, over the weekend, the track and the action has taken its toll.
00:59We started with 33 cars on Friday. We're now down to 23 cars.
01:03So quite a few. We've lost 10.
01:05And this is the grid, the Shell Helix grid for the third and final race.
01:08And, of course, these are the results of Race 2.
01:10Lowndes up the front there. Then we go back. Perkins, Scaife, Larcombe and Poole.
01:14All the way back. Dick Johnson will start from 9.
01:17Ashby, Steve Richards and Darren Hossack.
01:19And Darren Hossack, a great job by young Darren because he started from last position in that second race
01:24to come up and finish 12th. So well done to the winds driver, young Darren Hossack.
01:28Green flag at the back. We know it's only seconds away.
01:31Will Lowndes get another blinder or can Bauer get the jump on him?
01:34It's an even point score after two. Red lights are on.
01:37We get ready. Green. Here we go.
01:39Who got off the line the best? Seaton got away to a reasonably good start.
01:42He split the pack. Seaton and Lowndes it is.
01:45Heading into Shell MasterCard corner. Lowndes has got the inside run and will hang on to it.
01:49Contact there. Seaton drifts away.
01:51Oh, he's got enough for a bit.
01:54Mark Scaife, I think it is, up on the grass there.
01:57He's really getting into the elbow action back in the pack.
02:00That's lost him a heap of positions.
02:02So his teammate Craig Lowndes leads him back.
02:05Through Repco Corner up Hold Hill for the first time.
02:08Somebody got mixed up in a whole heap of stuff.
02:10I thought that was Stephen Ellery. Some smoke coming from his car perhaps.

02:20Reaching speeds of upwards of 260 km per hour.
02:23The opening lap of 16. The third and final race for today.
02:27Mark Scaife's got a big job in front of him.
02:29He damaged his steering rack in fact in that second heat.
02:31That must let him. Oh, Jason Bright.
02:34A big hello and welcome to the Shell Australian Touring Car Championship for Friday.
02:39He set the lap record in the first race and has had nothing but trouble in the next two.
02:43Yeah, just an example of the damage.
02:45The biff and barge in this opening round of the 98 Championship.
02:48Boy, it's a hot day here. It's over 30 degrees and the action is just as hot on the track.
02:52Craig Lowndes managing to stay out of all that damage
02:54as the field sorts itself out down the stream for the first time.
02:57And a big cheer for the local boy, Craig Lowndes, who comes home and is leading the field.
03:02Lowndes won here in 96.
03:04Two race wins. Bauer won the other one.
03:07So could he do it again? He's heading that way.
03:10He's certainly in good form. Hossack well placed there as they all drift through.
03:13Trevor Ashby as well. Here's John Bauer all over the back of Glenn Seaton.
03:17Russell Ingle doing well. This is the view from the back of the fourth credit falcon.
03:21John Bauer trying hard. These two had a good battle early in the second race.
03:25Bauer got through and then just walked away with it.
03:27Early days yet though. 16 laps.
03:30This is exactly the situation, Lee, that Craig Lowndes will be looking for.
03:34He opened up 1.5 seconds on that first lap while the field was sorting themselves out.
03:38It's a very valuable bumper when the competition's this close.
03:41Well, he might have been in Europe for 12 months and didn't have a very satisfactory time,
03:46but he hasn't lost his starting ability.
03:48Fantastic. Both races, second race and this one, he's got off the line beautifully.
03:53John Bauer, we'll get a look at the inside. A real look at the inside.
03:57Not quite enough room there, Glenn Seaton. Make sure there's not enough room.
04:00Shuts the door. John Bauer's already been in the wards through that part of the circuit.
04:04In the opening heat. Doesn't want another contact in Heat 3.
04:07The funny thing is in that heat when he came together with Mark Scaife,
04:10they dragged him up to say that, oh, Scaife was far enough past and everything.
04:16But even Mark Scaife said, listen, there was no way that was Bauer's fault.
04:20Look who's looming in the background. Larry Perkins is right up there behind Bauer.
04:24Not too far behind at all. So this is going to be very interesting indeed.
04:28Then we pick up Dick Johnson behind that. Then it looks like Mark Larcombe.
04:31We've got word through from the officials that Trevor Ashby has received a stop-go penalty.
04:35It may have been that first lap incident or a jumping the start. We'll find out later on.
04:41Jumping the start, the word is through now. Jumping the start, so stop-go for Trevor Ashby.
04:46The only guys in the four teams at the moment are Lowndes and Engle.
04:49But Lowndes, he still pulled that through tenths of a second on Engle that last lap.
04:54Hear the roar of these 600 horsepower V8 monsters as they crest the rise over Holton Hill.
04:59260K barrelling down through these S's. Braking very hard for Exar Corner.
05:04Fantastic action amongst the V8s all through the day at Sandown.
05:07Lowndes now building it out. 1.8 seconds, almost 2 seconds the lead over Engle.
05:11Seton, Bauer, Perkins, Johnson, Larcombe's up there too.
05:14Scaife back in eighth. Moore and Richards in the tenth.
05:16You're riding with Dick Johnson. Shell Helix Racecam.
05:19Aboard Shell 17 forward as he tries to close the gap to Larry Perkins.
05:23Well, it's nice and close for those minor placings, isn't it?
05:26Third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh. It's all nice and close.
05:29We watched Dick hard at work. He's had a little bit of bad luck today.
05:33None of his own fault either. He's just been involved in a few little hiccups.
05:37We won't be totally happy with today, but if he can get a good result in this one, it might change things.
05:42Well, it looks like that gap at the front stabilised that time across.
05:45Engle just held that lead at 1.8 seconds to the gap to our race leader, Craig Lowndes.
05:50That'll be interesting if Engle can fight back.
05:53In actual fact, Engle has pulled him back a tenth of a second.
05:56It's going to tell a story in the next two laps, so keep you updated.
06:00I would say that Engle definitely hasn't thrown a towel in.
06:02There's your Shell Helix race score, the top ten positions.
06:05Mark Poole in the Gawler South Australia Commodore has done a terrific job to stay with these level one cars.
06:11He's had a couple of good races. The last one, if he can continue in this one,
06:15that'll be going through XR Falcon Corner.
06:17Seton's leading this freight train.
06:19There's still Lowndes and Engle up in the front.
06:21Schafer's now dropped back to tenth position. Can you believe it?
06:24Yeah, and he's lapping at 1.17, so he's at least two and a half seconds off the pace.
06:29So he's obviously going to stay for the top.
06:31Very, very hot conditions here, John Bauer.
06:34Staying up to heat two is not exactly right in the operating window for these Dunlops to work at.
06:38Their supreme performance is pretty narrow, certainly compared to the Bridgestones.
06:42I think the big problem that Bauer's worried about is his brakes are overheating pretty badly.
06:48On board again, the Shell Helix in car camera with Dick Johnson,
06:51four times a round winner here at Sandown International Raceway.
06:54Unfortunately, that's not going to pan out today.
06:57His teammate was in with a shot of taking out another round win,
07:00getting his second round win here at Sandown, John Bauer,
07:02but JB's got a pretty big battle on his hands at the moment.
07:06Meanwhile, Craig Lowndes is just drifting away.
07:08Lowndes is heading towards his second round win if things remain as is.
07:12Yeah, it'll be good for the Holden boys too.
07:14The score at the moment from Australian Touring Car Championship races at Sandown,
07:1712 wins to Ford, 11 to Holden.
07:19So if Lowndes can get up and win today, that'll be 12 all.
07:24Watching the battle here between Larry Perkins and Dick Johnson.
07:28This is probably Dick's best run, his clearest run.
07:31And when he's had some bad luck in the past, Mark,
07:33he's really pulled his way back very strong.
07:36Well, he has. I think he's had a lot of bad luck today, as Mark said.
07:39And if you look at the aerial shot there, DJ's really hot on the brakes.
07:45He's certainly keeping up his fitness routine too.
07:47Maybe over 50 years of age, but it's not dimming his approach,
07:51physical approach.
07:52He swims something like three to five kilometres every morning in the pool.
07:57And he says that keeps him in tip-top shape to drive these 1.35 tonnes of V8 monster.
08:05Very big Brisbane Broncos fan too.
08:08Mark Larcombe in the Mitre 10 Ford.
08:11Managed to avoid all that carnage and heat too.
08:13It's almost like his luck is changing.
08:14There was a point there, certainly in his opening seasons in V8 Supercar,
08:18where if there was any altercation on the track, some of them managed to crash into him.
08:22I told you it's his new St Christopher. It's true.
08:25Well, it could be the same Christopher, because we'll follow his form throughout 1998.
08:30And if things do dramatically change, as they have today,
08:33maybe it's his good fortune finally shining on Mark Larcombe.
08:36We'll believe you after round 10, Baz.
08:37He's the patron saint of travel.
08:40Seventh in the second race for Mark Larcombe, the Mitre 10 Falcon.
08:43Here he is. The Queenslander doing a great job.
08:46Working hard. His team mate, his young team mate, Jason Bright,
08:49hasn't had a very nice day, a very nice season debut in 1998
08:54to the Shell Australian Touring Car Championship.
08:56But about time, Mark, as luck has changed and things are looking good.
08:58Top 10, Lowndes, Ingle, Seton, Bowell, Perkins, Johnson, Larcombe.
09:02Stephen Richards has come up. That's quite good.
09:04Skate was back up in the ninth. He's having a good battle at the moment with Mark Poole.
09:08So Lowndes and Ingle at the front. Really locked into battle here.
09:11Lowndes has done a 1.13.08.
09:13Digging deep. Ingle just a few tenths slower.
09:15That's put the gap out to 2.4 seconds.
09:18This is the Lowndes of 1996 just grinding his opposition away.
09:22Really putting in some quick laps.
09:24Ingle going with it, but not quite so fast that last time around.
09:27Well, people were saying if Craig wants to get back overseas,
09:30he's got to come back over here and really impress the sponsors
09:33to get some financial backing to get back over into Europe.
09:35So he's got to have a repeat of 1996.
09:37He won here in 1996 and he's heading towards another round win here today.
09:41So that would start season 1998.
09:44The right way and keep things nice and positive for HRT and Craig Lowndes.
09:49He's been really enjoying the build-up to this series too.
09:52There's been a lot of attention, a lot of immediate attention on Mark's skate.
09:55And that's allowed him to sit in the shadows and get himself dialed back into the car
09:59and waiting for the races to start. Now he's putting on a real show.
10:02He's going very, very well. Ingle nicely positioned in second.
10:05He's doing well as they come out of Simico Corner.
10:08Lowndes is all out there by himself. There's the gap.
10:11He's doing extremely well onto the Verox Straight.
10:15Word through from the officials that Dick Johnson has been shown the bad sportsmanship flag.
10:22Oh boy, the race directors are going to be working overtime in 1998.
10:26It's very, very tough out there.
10:28Things are going very well here at Sandown International.
10:31There is your race leader. He's walking away with it and heading towards another round win here at Sandown.

10:46the opening round of the 98 Shell Series.
10:49This is the Shell Helix Falcon 18 of John Mao.
10:52He's doing it a little bit tougher this time around.
10:54He's sitting back in fourth, trying to chase the defending champ, Glenn Seaton.
10:58And we should take a moment to say congratulations to the Melbourne public
11:01and coming out in their droves in excess of 20,000 people here at Sandown today.
11:05And it's been a very big sporting week and weekend in Melbourne.
11:09So a credit to them for coming out and supporting the big boys of motorsport in Australia.
11:13That's great, because the only reason they got so many people at the V8s at Bathurst
11:17was because Grocki was retiring. I mean, I love Grocki V8s today.
11:23Shell Helix race car, there it is.
11:25Aubrey in the top right of your screen, top left of your screen, I should say.
11:29As we grind down these laps, 10 laps completed of this 15-lap contest.
11:34Craig Lowndes still in charge, 2.7 seconds the lead over Russell Engle.
11:38Seaton in third, Bow in fourth, Perkins, Johnson.
11:42Mark Warkham still in seventh, Richards in eighth, Scaife and Longhurst in ninth and tenth.
11:47Yeah, it looks like Craig Lowndes now has just put on sort of cruise control.
11:51He's keeping the gap out just over two and a half seconds.
11:55And a sensible thing to do.
11:57There's no sense in tearing the tyres to pieces and wearing the equipment out.
12:01So Mark, you're having a very good day, actually.
12:04Hard at work.
12:05Mark Scaife, doing it tough back in ninth position.
12:09He's such a competitive guy.
12:11We were talking to him yesterday after qualifying and he said he was second fastest.
12:16He said, well, there you go, I'm the first of the losers.
12:19He's winning many counts with this bike and he won't be happy sitting this far back in the pack.
12:25Now there's a shot of Mark Scaife's feet as he pedals this 600-horsepower V8 around Sandown Park.
12:31And you can see there's plenty of tap dancing going on down there.
12:34There's a high foot box in these cars.
12:36Exhaust runs right under the floor.
12:38Quite often drivers have burnt their feet with those three-layer Nomex boots on.
12:43Incredibly hot inside these cars.
12:45Dick Johnson's doing well.
12:46Still there in sixth position, chasing hard after Larry Perkins.
12:50And while this guy's HRT teammate, Craig Lowndes, is going very well out in front,
12:57doing very well for Holden, I guess we shouldn't get too carried away into the opening round.
13:01Since the inception of the V8 formula in 1993, the championship's gone.
13:05Ford, Holden, Ford, Holden, etc.
13:08So if you take it by that, Holden's in for a good year.
13:12They're getting away to a good start.
13:14Certainly, look at the statistics.
13:15Three championships to Ford and three championships to Bridgestone over those five years.
13:19So you'd say that a Ford on Bridgestone is the dominant package
13:23and Glenn Seeger certainly proved that over the years as well.
13:27Heading up into XR Falken Corner.
13:28We're still on board with Mark Scaife.
13:32Hard at work coming up underneath the Dunlop Bridge.
13:35The way he just taps that clutch, barely touches it.
13:38Just enough to take the load off the transmission to pull another gear.
13:42Absolutely lightning-fast changes on the brake.
13:45Back on the throttle.
13:48All very smooth with control down there.
13:50We're good friends with Scaife here at Network 10.
13:53He's joined us quite a few times in the commentary box
13:55and we know that he'll be disappointed with those results.
13:58But I guess, guys, we should look at it that at least he's been finishing
14:01and points are vital to get in the bag over these 10-round series.
14:04Well, at the end of the day, you've got 30 races.
14:06I mean, 40 points to win a race is a lot of points if you don't finish.
14:10Well, speaking of HRT and Holden, etc.,
14:13one of the main men last year was Greg Murphy.
14:15He joins us down at the pits.
14:16How are things, Murph, and how are things at HRT down there?
14:19Yeah, pretty good, Lee.
14:20Obviously, they're pretty happy with the way Craig's going out the front.
14:23He's doing it nice and easy.
14:24He's just keeping a nice gap, making sure he's not burning up his tyres.
14:27And as you can see, I think he's doing it quite comfortably.
14:30Mark Scaife seems to be pulling a bit of a gap on the guys behind him.
14:34He's also catching up with Stephen Richards at the moment.
14:36So, obviously, as you said before, he won't be happy from where he is,
14:39but he's making some inroads now.
14:41He had a few moments earlier in the race,
14:43but he's definitely back on track at this stage.

14:493.43 is the gap between Lowndes and Ingle.
14:54Craig building it all the time.
14:56Here's his teammate, Mark Scaife, sitting back in ninth position.
14:59So, he's pulled his way back into the top ten after all sorts of dramas.
15:03So, not the best start to the championship for Mark Scaife,
15:06but you can bet this guy is going to be a big factor in Shell Series 98.
15:10Just a quick glimpse there of Stephen Richards in the Valvoline Cummins,
15:13Gary Rogers Commodore.
15:15He's sitting in eighth just ahead of Mark Scaife.
15:17Stephen, he's had a very good day.
15:20Someone who didn't have some good luck in the last race was Tony Longhurst.
15:23He was caught up in that bit of a biffo session with Paul Romano,
15:27wrong place at the wrong time when Paul just got a little bit out of shape,
15:30and Tony got hit by him and sent sideways.
15:33So, everything's going okay, and Tony's in the top ten.
15:36Speaking with him yesterday, he was very positive,
15:38pleased with the Yokohamas, was running extremely consistent lap times,
15:41and he said early in the championship last year, Lee,
15:44I was a little bit disappointed and sort of a bit disillusioned,
15:47but he said, I'm very pumped up about this,
15:49and especially after the Primus 1000,
15:51and he said, we'll see how we go this year, but I'm feeling good.
15:55A couple of the guys running around, John Briggs and Ray Hislop.
16:01It's currently the battle for 14th and 15th position,
16:04and just coming up behind Chris Spurton, he's running 13th,
16:06so it's actually the battle for 13th, 14th and 15th.
16:09Just an example of the depth as you start working through the Level 2
16:13and Level 3 privateer teams,
16:15just how many battles are going up and down this huge field.
16:17Two laps remaining for these guys, for our race leader Craig Lowndes.
16:21So a great battle on here, John Briggs.
16:24Earlier won the Privateers Cup,
16:27and he's showing some good performance in the race here too.
16:31Chris Spurton is the top privateer at the moment,
16:33the man leading this three-car battle here,
16:35Hislop and Briggs coming in behind.
16:37We've organised something,
16:39instigated something a little bit different this year for you folks.
16:42You'll notice the drivers, when you see our graphics,
16:45we'll have a peak next to them, representing the privateer.
16:48When you see the graphics come up on our screen,
16:50here is Chris Spurton doing very well,
16:52leading the Privateers Charge at the moment.
16:54Trevor Ashby was top privateer in Race 2.
16:57It's all Spurton at the moment, he's doing very well.
16:59That'll all become far more relevant too,
17:01and all the privateers competing for the Privateers Cup
17:04go onto that Yokohama Control tyre from Round 3.
17:07Oh, look at this, big attack up the inside.
17:09John Briggs, he went really deep under brakes,
17:11and Ray Hislop was able to say, well, thank you,
17:13I'll try again next time.
17:15John Briggs, 2JB, he's in the race.
17:17There's Trevor Ashby.
17:19Landsmile Smash repairs Commodore.
17:21He received that stop-go penalty.
17:23We're in the closing stages of this one.
17:25One more lap left to run for Craig Lowndes,
17:28and he will pick up his second Shell Australian Touring Car Championship round win
17:32here at Sandown International.
17:34He did it in 96, as we were saying earlier,
17:36and he's well on the way to doing it yet again.
17:38Russell Ingalls still charging hard,
17:40but he's a couple of seconds off the pace.
17:42Yeah, 3.2.
17:44Just be watching that gap between Ingalls and Lowndes.
17:46He's had him covered very comfortably.
17:48That's got to be a nice win for Craig Lowndes.
17:51Yeah.
17:52After the year he had last year, you know,
17:54and you just get it out of your face and forget all about it,
17:56and it's the perfect way, psychologically,
17:58it sticks him at the top of the tree.
18:00Here's Russell, just cruising up the back straight.
18:03He looks pretty relaxed, doesn't he?
18:05Now he starts to work a little bit harder,
18:06and they've got to go through the change of direction there,
18:08heading up into Falcon XR's sixth corner.
18:10You see the hole in his screen, or the dent in his screen.
18:13He didn't even see that.
18:15So I said, what are you doing driving along with your eyes shut?
18:19Our race leader, and this is going to be a very popular victory.
18:22He set the Shell Australian Touring Car Championship scene
18:25and the V8 scene alight in 1996 when he picked up the big three,
18:29sand down the championship in Bathurst.
18:31He's got his round win here.
18:33Craig Lowndes, the crowd are going wild.
18:35The Victorian wins it, takes out round one.
18:38The 1998 Shell Series.
18:40Congratulations to Lowndes.
18:42Hinkle in for a good second spot,
18:44a very consistent date for Glenn Seaton
18:46as he cruises around in third.
18:50They bring it on home, I guess, after the first two races,
18:53you could say an incident-free one.
18:55Well, the thing to worry about is,
18:57I was talking to Bob Warren's crew,
19:00and they reckon he'll get his car repaired by Tuesday
19:03and be on the boat to Tasmania.
19:05Well, the thing is, the Gary Rodgers team
19:07were having a very good day.
19:09Stephen Richard's so competitive.
19:11But it's HRT's day.
19:13Lowndes in for the win.
19:14There's the defending Shell Series champ, Glenn Seaton.
19:17He had a very consistent day and should be happy.

19:22Lowndes, Hinkle, Seaton and John Bowell picking up fourth position.

20:11On your home turf, coming back from Europe,
20:13it must be a great feeling.

20:15It's been a tremendous, I suppose, comeback.
20:17It's a tribute to all the guys on the team.
20:19Obviously, the biggest thing that's come out of this weekend,
20:21it's going to be a hell of a year.
20:23In that race, the conditions were very hot.
20:25How was the car performing? It looked like it was pretty consistent.
20:27We've been working on the car all weekend.
20:29Obviously, the new Bridgestones have delivered some new tyres,
20:32but I suppose the Dunlops are a little bit of an unknown quantity.
20:35As I said, the consistency of both Dunlop and Bridgestone are fantastic.
20:39So, as I said, it's going to be one good year.
20:41All sorts of damage out there.
20:42You sort of lost something like ten cars in the course of the day.
20:45You managed to stay out of that.
20:47Well, I suppose, thank God, I'm up the front.
20:49We had a couple of good starts,
20:51which I guess led into the first turn the first time.
20:54All the carnage happened behind me,
20:56which I guess is a bit of a shame for the other guys.
20:59Craig Lowndes, the big winner at Sandown International today.

21:03The winner, 1998 Shell Australia Touring Car Championship.
21:06It's going to be a hell of a season.
21:09Well, I guess people were saying it was going to be hard to follow up last season,
21:12but I think this season could definitely be better.
21:15Obviously, from that great win, Lowndes leads the table,
21:17the points table, that is, after the first round.
21:20Bowe in second, the defending champs Seton in third.
21:22The Castrol Commodores well represented.
21:24Perkins and Ingle in there.
21:25And then we go back to Markscape in sixth.
21:27Richards, Johnson, Larkham, Longhurst, Poole.
21:30A good showing by Mark Poole today.
