00:00Well Shell has just released a new MasterCard and basically all you need to know is that it pays you back in free petrol and
00:07For more information, you can inquire at your local Shell servo
00:11We're getting ready for race to the opening round of the 98 Shell Australian Touring Car Championship
00:16We ride on board now with Russell Ingle
00:18Unfortunately, Russell had a stop go penalty in the first race. Remember we were saying wonder what happened to him
00:23That's what it was. We'll tell you more about it. Later. John Bauer will start from the number one position
00:26These are the starting positions and results of race 1, Lowndes from 2, Seaton from 3 and Stephen Richards a great result from 4
00:33Out of 5, Larry Perkins, Jason Baragwana the second of the Valvoline Holdens, Mark Skaife after that little incident and Tony Longhurst out of 8
00:40Back to position 9
00:42Fantastic for Paul Romano and Jason Bright who incidentally set a new lap record in his first race
00:47John Faulkner out of 11 and Steve Ellery out of 12
00:50Mark Poole coming
00:57We go back to position 17, Greg Crick, Darren Tate, Trevor Ashby and Paul Wheel the young 18 year old out of 20
01:0521 is Ray Hislop, Smirt, Finnegan and Rose. The rev limiters are up, Briggs, Osborne, Price, Wilmington
01:12We are just about set to go
01:13This is race 2 and the start is all important
01:17Mork and Possack starts from the rear of the grid here at an incident in race 1
01:20Green flag at the back now watch Bauer got away to a good start, Lowndes is alongside
01:25We'll wait for this one, Lowndes will be looking to get a dynamite start, green light, we're away
01:30Seaton gets off sideways and look like Lowndes has got the start and then he has
01:34So the motorway start...
01:35Oh look oh!
01:38That's Faulkner's in that one
01:40John Faulkner has been hit, there's been a big collision, Jason Baragwana is in it as well. Oh that stopped for sure
01:47Wow, that is a major and can you believe it Paul Romano, it's a red flag situation
01:54Baragwana, Faulkner and Romano, there's more in it as well
01:59That's Donagher and Danny Osborne and Greg Crick and Mark Larkham
02:04No, it's Jason Bright, the Pertex Falcon of Bright. It was difficult to see where all that started
02:10I mean we were looking at the left of the screen, but there was action going on further behind that
02:14So it looked like a double sort of whammy. Oh boy
02:17That's what you call pretty bad luck. Ray Hislop in it as well. Well, that's at least half a dozen cars there
02:25That's Donagher's car
02:27That's not in good shape at all. Let's have a look at we've got I'm sure we'll have plenty of replays
02:32Here it is from one angle and you see over on the right-hand side
02:36It looks like Faulkner. You can't say who started maybe Faulkner got a punt up the backside and
02:44That's
02:45Stephen Ellery there right here with the Konica car. Look at the front of Greg Crick's Commodore
02:51And this is the real danger because the guys off the back are full throttle charging up toward this block track
02:55And you just can't see anything. Yes, so Faulkner it was who
03:00Maybe turned around in the middle of that pack and that absolute mayhem ensured
03:05But it certainly was Faulkner that turned around when you can't say it was Faulkner
03:08Because
03:11Well, this is carved off what you would say half the field but at least a third of the field up
03:16Unbelievable. Oh, look at this
03:18He's just at the door to that smoke. Yeah, a lot of work for the crews to do. There is just unbelievable amounts of damage
03:26You can see that
03:28Rear tire rubbing on the guard there. Look another look at this incident from another angle
03:33This is from inside one of the Castrol Commodores and there's Faulkner now. We'll get a good view of what happened here
03:39Faulkner was the man we saw sideways across the track. He's going for a gap between the Valvoline Commodore. Okay, he's up inside and
03:45Yeah, comes into contact to Varguana. He hit Varguana there. Might have been trying to thread the needle a little bit closely there
03:52Bit of contact that's turned him around
03:55That was the in car shot from Ingalls car
03:58Yep, so you could see the contact between Faulkner and
04:01The Valvoline Commodore and then that's just started the dominoes. Stephen Ellery totally disappointed right out the opposite side of the track
04:11Good job by a lot of the guys at the back to dodge that situation
04:14Unfortunately, some of them were trapped in it, but I guess the majority got through but there's the result
04:20The big cleanup begins and the work begins for those teams involved and let's hope that that doesn't put a lot of those guys
04:27Out of the next race. We hope to see them back. We'll take a short break
04:31Welcome back to sand down or I probably probably should say carnage central
04:35That's how it was a couple of minutes ago, but Guana straight ahead Faulkner off to the left
04:39Here's the point of contact bang and Faulkner goes
04:42Shotgunning across to the right hand side. Here's the view from the high angle Faulkner going sideways down the track
04:48But Guana's there right is sandwiched in the middle. Keep your eyes on the photographer bottom left of screen
04:53He's about to get a very rude awakening
04:56Gary Wilmington comes in contact with the armco and the poor old photographer gets hit with a fence piling. There it is there
05:04Now we've been told that he's been taken to the pit lane Medical Center
05:09And let's hope that that gentleman is okay, because that was a pretty rude shot for him
05:13Let's hope that he's not too badly injured and I'd say he'd be in better shape than his camera would at the moment
05:17Well, yeah, I saw him. I walked along the line with Greg Murphy and I was just taking him away on a stretcher
05:22She's got a big cut on his knee, but he more or less looks okay
05:25But well, we just got word in now bad. Sorry to interrupt you
05:28It was the Herald Sun reporter and he in fact has a broken leg. Oh, that's not too good. But anyway, we're back and
05:36The carnage report is Faulkner Ellery bar Guana Wilmington Crick and bright are out
05:42Meanwhile, we get ready for a restart now lounge got the job last time. Let's see what's going to happen this time
05:48Red light watch for the green away. We go again. We'll bow get the start of this lounge to it. It's lousy
05:58They all get away cleanly this time and throw the car turn you can see lounge muscling across there
06:04What are the ideal line in to turn one show master car turn?
06:07He did that very effectively and he's opened up two or three car lengths and really attacking me
06:12It's two wheels up in the air
06:14Twisty promise good complex up to rip go corner and down the back straight for the first time
06:19Good start by Craig lounge seating up in the second already. That's great. Have a look at Stephen Richards
06:24He's up there in the fourth scape a little further back. They work their way through
06:28Markham's luck must have changed. He avoided all of that damage. So maybe it has he's still out there as well
06:36He started wearing a
06:38Christopher that somebody gave him and ever since he's worn this to Christopher. He hasn't had bad luck
06:45Like Alan Jones red underpants, we've just been told this race reduced to 15 laps
06:56I don't believe it
06:58Carnage Central, I think you're rightly this is unbelievable
07:01I think I will be so surprised if they start you see that the debris on the circuit there
07:07Well, and I think there's someone else on the other side to Barry race director Tim Schenken will be hoping he can keep this race
07:13Going we haven't seen a red flag at the start line yet
07:16But messages will be crossing frantically between various flag positions. Meanwhile, the race continues
07:24Craig lounge he's a man on a mission, isn't he?
07:28Side sitting up the inside of John Maldon go side by side in the ripco corner up the back straight a big drag race gonna
07:35Happen here. We've got a replay of that incident down at Dandenong Road boy. Oh boy
07:39It's all happening at Sandown and heat to round one of the Shell Australian touring car championship for the battle continues
07:46For Romano escaped in that first one. Meanwhile, we have a look at the two Ford campaigners now around the outside
07:52So he takes back second spot from Glenn Seton. Have a look at Stephen Richards behind Satan as well
07:58Here's the shell helix replay the previous lab escape dives on the inside of Perkins
08:03We go to the replay now now, there's Romano and Longhurst is involved bang
08:07That's the car that I thought was on the other side. So Romano a first time round, but he hasn't this time
08:14Romano Dick Johnson Tony Longhurst all tangled up in there. Look at the damage. Let's go inside on board with Dick Johnson
08:20Now he's run up by Longhurst. It looks like Romano's got out on the curbs Longhurst has taken avoiding action courage
08:26And all three of them caught up in there
08:28There was a bit of contact between Dick and let's have a look at this from our chopper and you can see
08:36Looks like Romano just got up high on the ripple strip got out of shape and I was trying to gather it up
08:41Everyone's taken avoiding action. It's just unfortunately ended in a bit of damage
08:46Meanwhile John now the shell helix Falcon number 18 continues as a fantastic battle for the minor placings
08:52Now's looking good in second, but it's seen Stephen Richards is having
08:55Well, one of the best meetings I've ever seen him have he finished fourth in the first race
08:59He's up there again in fourth in this one
09:01But here's your race leader lounge who's got plenty of air between himself and John Bauer in second. Well, it's nice for loungy
09:07I mean, he's done the right things pulled out a nice little gap and the world that fighting's going on to bow
09:12See Richards, etc. You know, it's got to cut you some slack Stephen Richards a spot top screen
09:18He went way out wide and spun the Valvoline Cummins common
09:21Oh, there he is on the top of the VR screen. Well, we were just giving him a rapid saying how well he was going
09:26You married him. Oh
09:28He was going well, but I just got just spun wide. Well joining us in commentary
09:35It's Greg Murphy Greg. Have a look at this. What do you reckon? Oh, he he got that sideways scape
09:40He's coming down and tapped him in the door. He left a bit of a gap though
09:44And he got a bit wide under brakes look like he was a little bit loose to before that. He went pretty late
09:49Well this time last year you weren't having easy and bending here yourself either, huh?
09:55He nearly caught it and then he escaped he's just come in a touch now that was there
10:01That was the view from the rear of the Ford credit Falcon of Glen Seton. So
10:05Signatures are very disappointed there. Meanwhile, here's our race leader
10:10In the Primus 1000 and ticked at 500. Well, he's at the front where he should be
10:14He's done a great job and he's pretty accustomed to this position. I think you'll be enjoying this right now
10:20Just like you are sitting here. I agree. I've been every bit of it Barry
10:23There's plenty of fans plenty of your fans around Australia that are keen to know. What are you going to do this year?
10:28It's a pretty easy
10:31Hopefully channel 10 are gonna be a contract
10:34No, I've got my heart's got to go answer the birth because you know, you imagine what it's like the frustration of sitting here watching this
10:43Yeah, he's driving my car
10:45It should have been me
10:48But it's good to see Craig's back on
10:51He's very happy with it after the first race as we see JB
10:57I should think psychologically for Craig this year. He had such a lousy year in Europe
11:04I sort of thing
11:07Over in Austria, so it's such a massive relief for him psychologically being back where he likes to be and driving something that he loves
11:14Greg for you
11:16A lot of people are saying well, are you gonna make any cars?
11:19You've signed the contract with HRT for the endurance races, but how can you update your fans how things are going?
11:25Yeah, it hasn't gone to to plan but I mean we're looking for a lot of money and it's very hard to find
11:30At this stage, it's not looking too good. We're gonna give it up. Hope we won't give up hope to Castro Commodore's air of England Perkins
11:37They're going quite well
11:39Skate further back like that Larkin hassling their skates seems to have dropped back a bit off the pace and he's black
11:45It's pressuring him. So maybe got a bit of damage off that
11:48Well, he's last lap with some three seconds slower than the the six or so cars in front of him
11:53So here's the two wins Commodore's of Darren take Darren Hossack
11:57Two young campaigners doing the best and paint's got a lot of damage. He was caught up in that initial melee
12:03Circulating the best that he possibly can Darren Hossack's come from real
12:08Teammate syndrome
12:11Not the way to go
12:14Well fierce competition between the teammates these two young guys. They're trying their very best
12:19Darren played it's a big moment for him. He's debut. Shall I show him touring car meeting?
12:23He did rise of course at the promise 1,000 areas their battle damaged in all
12:29Seem like Darren Hossack Terry
12:32And then we pick up Chris Merton plenty of action good battle going on here between these guys
12:37I mean, I've got a lot to fight for out there
12:39And you know, it's good to see so many new cars new drivers out there doing the job and there's a great battle going on
12:46Just give you a bit of an update on the on the England affair in the first race
12:50Russell got penalized because he had a coming together with Jason
12:56I spoke to Russell Engle and he said that he was having really bad break problems
13:00he's getting pad knockoff, which for people that don't know just means the pads come away from the disc because
13:06either it's a buckled disc or some vibration
13:09Brinigan doing a shortcut
13:11Ancestors Russell Engle did. Dick Johnson up there. DJ. So he's on his way back
13:15Yeah, so Russell Engle is having break problems and you could believe that because Russell Engle did exactly the same
13:21But it's not like Russell would back off if he's got a problem. No, I don't know
13:24The problem is you see Russell's in a situation of you can't cry wolf now because I got in a bit of a bobber last year
13:31So one thing we should mention guys is that we're watching the winds Commodore of Darren Pate. This is his debut meeting
13:36As I said a lap ago. He is in the top 10. He's sitting in 10th position at the moment
13:40That was one of his season goals to finish in the top 10
13:43Let alone his first race meeting second race of the year and he's already in the top ten. So it's a great effort
13:48Let's give a rap to that guy on screen Darren Hossack too because he's come from rear of group to 11
13:53We go back up the front though
13:54This is Seton and Engle the battle for third and fourth Glenn still sitting there in third
13:59Our front two are going quite nicely lounge still leads by some three seconds three and a half seconds over John Bauer
14:05But it's Seton and Engle third and fourth on screen at the moment
14:09We ride inside the Castrol Commodore you guys had some good battles last year
14:14Yeah, we certainly didn't I mean it's at the end of the day, you know
14:17There's a bit of war of words around the place
14:18You've got a huge crack in the windscreen like a something's hit him off the maybe off that start line in Seton
14:24The view from the rear of the Ford Credit Falcon
14:27And Russell's doing a great job. He's just a hard charger and likes to race hard so he's doing what he does best
14:34Approaching halfway lap 7 of 15. Remember it's a reduced race. We go back on board inside the cockpit
14:41with Russell Engle
14:43Challenging hard and stop go penalty as you heard Barry say in the first race and a couple of altercations one with lounge
14:49They're one with Brian, but he's all over the back of our defending champion. He is busy. You look inside the gun car there
14:54He's working very hard. Where's the best place to pass the agreement?
14:58It's a horsepower circuit down the front straight under brakes if you can get underneath someone down there
15:03That's a good spot
15:05It can be a really good place to pass
15:07But you've got to have the horsepower get the run out of the corner power downs very important out of turn the last turn
15:12on the front straight and
15:13If you've got it, you can do it at the end of the back straight as well
15:17Look at how Glen's cars are always pretty quick
15:22He always has
15:27Take up out of that so you see
15:33Think Russell might have got rid of that break from Barry
15:49You can just see Glenn put it away a little bit just a little bit
15:52Craig got a good run on that first race Craig allows to get past
15:55Under brakes and angling was good enough to sort of not give up too much of a fight
15:59But and it just goes to show that it down the front straight is one place
16:02Can you pass now has reduced the distance between himself and louds by about half a second as we watch Russell
16:08It'll climb all over the back of Glenn's seat the top 10 louds bow seat
16:13Trevor Ashby is the top privateer in night and Dick Johnson has poured his way up inside the top 10 now
16:19Pushing Darren take back to 11th spot
16:26It's
16:30A little bit surprised
16:32He's quick through there guys, isn't it?
16:34Very very through that change of direction through the flip-flop if you'd like to call that out of xr8 corner the Ford
16:39Credit Falcon gets out of the turns very very well too as you can see so you might be losing the time going in but he's
16:44Extremely quick out of the corners Glen a hard guy to pass
16:48Clean very very fairs a great driver and you know, he's he's out there to get points and win races
16:53No, he knows how important it is to finish and therefore if someone's making a move
16:58He doesn't want to make he doesn't end up in the gravel. So if someone's alongside, you know, he's very fair
17:16Realizes, you know, you've got to finish finish the races to get there and you can still win the championship and still win races at
17:21The same time. There's your leading pair right there lounges way out in front by about three and a half seconds in now
17:26This is the battle. We've been focusing on for quite some time now third and fourth
17:30People can't seem to penetrate black just pulls away on the straights
17:33The Ford Credit Falcon plenty of grunt as we go
17:37over Holden Hill
17:39That's in a 15 so in the closing stages. It's a good mixture of tires here as well
17:44We've got a Bridgestone Dunlop Bridgestone Dunlop and Dunlop. So it's definitely a parity between the compound
17:51It's pretty good at the moment I was going to struggling is
17:55In the old 14s and all the guys in front of them are in the 113
18:15Certainly as he said a lot closer this time and the distance we see there is actually easy drives out of the slipstream
18:21Not quite close enough
18:24To touch
18:26Now speaking of touches great now, this is where you gave God for a bit of a touch-up last year. Thanks for that Lee
18:33And camera angle would be great. It was bad for a way to replace the wrong time again, wasn't it?
18:40Back in fifth
18:41Fifth position you can see Larry Perkins there quite a way behind his teammate escape
18:45Larkin was well positioned in the top ten in seventh pool
18:48That's Mark Twill the South Australian doing a terrific job in eight ahead of Dick Johnson
18:53So Dick is really going very well working his way back up and preparation
18:57He's still inside the top ten the battle for third between Satan angle and continues
19:12These guys still going at it as a class another back
19:16No clean just shuts the door that was very close and that's where we had any sudden
19:23Between Russell and Jason Bride, so he just didn't want to do it again
19:28Let's go to be the breathing room there. Here's the replay. This is Paul. We only know he's locked it all up
19:32I think you're old rookie in the trade link Falcon trying to miss the gravel and
19:37Hasn't missed it. He's right in the middle of it. Those tires are looming
19:42Bank just touched him. He did a good job in the first race
19:45I think he was the second prime it's here home finishing in 20th position. So Larry's
19:50actually
19:52Circulating around the second half a second in the left fast and the two guys in front of him. That's Belinda Russell
19:57So he's actually making it in right here on these two
20:03Right now it's our race leader lap 12 and 15. He's done it very very well in the initial start
20:09He got the job TV
20:12And he did it again to prove that it wasn't a fluke in the second
20:14He's a fantastic starter always has been we go inside now with Mark scape watching him hard at work
20:20Here's the view out the front of the over the curve 50 HRT Commodore mark
20:24I'll give it behind so Marco is right in there coming up in the minus in Falcon
20:29I'm so happy to say that he missed that
20:31That incident. I mean, we don't like to see those kind of incidents, but usually Mark's involved in them, but he got out unscathed
20:39He's doing a good job. He's doing a great job.
20:42Great. Thank you very much for joining us today and the best of luck with the rest of this year
20:46I hope it all works out. We'll see what happens. Thanks guys. Come back and visit us another time. I would love to. Thanks very much.
20:52I don't need to join this lot, sir.
20:55We get back to the action the view from the back of Mark Scape's mobile HRT Commodore
21:00We are within a few laps of home
21:04Positions as is. Lowndes bows, seat dingle. That battle hasn't changed. Scape, Larkham, Toole, Johnson and Ashby
21:10They are in top ten at the moment
21:13Here's the race leader
21:16Lowndes goes through. Bauer goes through. You can see the distance here. It's quite some way. This battle for third continues
21:21Here's Larry trying to catch up, trying to bridge that gap between himself and his teammate, Russell Ingle
21:27It does look like a gleam has just pulled a bit on Russell Ingle now.
21:33So after a very dramatic start
21:35Things are a little more orderly at the moment. Larry going very well. He's circulated a 1.13.7, so
21:42He's doing very consistent times. The Dunlops are working well. He did a tremendous first race. He qualified 14th
21:48Obviously, that's where he started and finished fifth. So Larry put in a very good drive in the first race. Very consistent, very smooth
21:55He's sitting in that same position this time round
21:59So the order at the moment, and before we go to that, there's the terminal speed on Brock Strait
22:05235 kilometres an hour
22:07For Larry Perkins and the Castrol Commodore
22:09He brakes hard for turn one. Two laps to go. So the order at the moment, Lowndes is up to four seconds over John Bauer in second position
22:17This is fairly static. Two seconds further back to Glenn Seaton. That's Ingle, Perkins, Strait, Warkham, Poole, Johnson and Trevor Ashby in tenth position
22:26Yeah, it looks like Ingle has definitely given up on catching Seaton or passing Seaton
22:32Down the back straight, here's the gap
22:34So Russell has been a lot closer during the earlier stages of this race
22:39Craig Lowndes, the last time he raced here in a sprint race was of course in 1996 when he won the Shell Australian Touring Car Championship
22:46From memory, he won two of the three races
22:49Shaping up like a similar round, Mark, because I think Craig won two of those and John Bauer won the second race
22:54So if things stay as is, they'll be our two winners from the first two races today
22:59So if things stay as is, they'll be our two winners from the first two races today
23:02Of course, three races per round in each round of the Shell Australian Touring Car Championship
23:08So good for Craig Lowndes. I know it would have been a bit shattering in terms of his confidence that season in European Formula 3000
23:15Let's have a look back through the field for the top privateer competitors, Mark Poole
23:20That's good for him, he's in eighth place
23:22Well, this shows the gap between the...
23:25We have lost a few cars, of course, in that carnage at the start, but still a great performance from the privateers
23:31Level two privateer competitor, Paul, all the way from South Australia, backing from the town of Gawler, our southern state
23:40And he's been a consistent competitor on what really is a shoestring budget
23:45Mark, doing very well
23:47We've just got an update on the photographer from the Herald Sun
23:50The ambos don't think his leg's broken now, which is great
23:53And he's in good spirit, so well, let's hope that he's feeling a little bit better
23:57Coming up on Melinda Price, the Castrol Cougars entry there
23:59The race leader, Mobile HRT, Commodore of Craig Lowndes
24:03Making a welcome return to Australian V8 supercar racing
24:07He's looking to make it another dynamic year
24:10He hasn't been quiet about his plans to get back overseas, that is his aim
24:15Coming across the line, Lowndes wins race two here in the opening round of the championship
24:21He'll be happy with that, a fantastic start, and has carried it all the way to the line
24:25Yeah, he's a popular boy down here, Victorian lad
