00:00Right, I'm down here with Jason Bright. Jason, not a very nice start, what happened?
00:04We had a shell car down there inside, I think it was Bow, and we had Johnson on the outside.
00:08I got hit from behind and I'm the one that ended up off the track as usual, so I guess we've got to try and avoid some of these first corner things and get on with the race.
00:16This was your first ever drive in a V8 last year, wasn't it?
00:20Yeah, I raced here last year with the Gary Rogers team in the Valvoline car and we had a pretty good race here.
00:24I think we could have qualified a little bit higher, but I think we've got more credit for that one touring car race than I've got for racing Formula Holden or Formula Ford or anything else I've ever done.
00:32Now, before this season started, did you think, you're obviously the young gun at the moment and the new kid on the block, did you think it was going to turn out as good as it has?
00:41We came into this year hoping to be in the top six or so and if we could have stolen a few wins off the guys later on in the year, that would have been our ambition for the year.
00:53We came into this year hoping to win races and just because we're up here so soon, it's no surprise.
00:58So, who's Jason Barguana you used to race with? He's the main man you want to beat, obviously.
01:04Oh, for sure. Barguana's our rival, but we're racing against the other Bridgestone runners and the other Falcon runners and Glenn's in front of us with Bridgestone and Falcon and he's our benchmark, I guess.
01:15Well, you've been blessed pretty well so far.
01:17Thank you very much.
01:18Welcome back to Simmons Plains in Tasmania and just have a look at that huge crowd.
01:25They love their motorsport down here in Tasmania.
01:27We're gearing up for race two, but before we do, a short message to remind you that this magazine is now in your newsagents.
01:35It tells all the story of the 1997 Primus 1000 Classic, the V8 Bathurst, Larry's sixth win, how Peter Brock ended his Bathurst career and how so many fancy teams failed to finish.
01:47Grab it at your local newsagent now. I saw it in mine the other day.
01:50So, it's a goodbye. We're gearing up. The guys are weaving from side to side, warming up the tyres.
01:55Let's take a look at the grid for race two.
01:58There's the man who cleaned up in race one, Glenn Seaton, and of course, he will start from that number one position alongside Mark Scape.
02:04Craig Lowndes and Russell Ingle, they share row two.
02:07Yeah, Jason Barguana moves up the order too with Dick Johnson.
02:10Jason Bright leading his way toward the front as well.
02:12Larry Perkins in the Castrol Commodore.
02:14Back to position nine, Paul Romano.
02:16Well done, young Paul. That was a great drive in race one ahead of top privateer, Greg Crick.
02:20Longhurst and Reid, they share 11 and 12.
02:23Out of 13, Ray Hislop, the local boy, Darren Hossack alongside the Wins Commodore.
02:27Peter Dorman in the M3 Motorsport Commodore, and Karen Brewer in the Castrol Cougardor.
02:32Back to 17, Stephen Richards. He obviously got caught up in that hassle in race one.
02:37Steve Ellery, Darren Pape, and four-wheel out of 20.
02:42Out of 21, Darcy Russell in the Commodore.
02:44John Faulkner, boy, he's got a lot of work ahead of him.
02:46Out of 22, Mal Rose from the Fairfax Community Newspapers Commodore.
02:49He's pushing his way up. Mark Larcombe with the Mitre 10 Ford.
02:52We go back to position 25, Terry Fittingham had some bad luck.
02:55So too did Ryan McLeod, and have a look at that.
02:58Starting from position 27, the local boy, the local favourite, John Bow,
03:03and it would be a long time between drinks that he started rear of grid here
03:07and looking at 26 cars in front of him.
03:10I think he was pretty lucky to be back on the grid at all.
03:12When you see he got turned around in the middle of that pack, he was rolling backwards.
03:15He told me after race one, rolling backwards in the pack, looking in his rearview mirror,
03:18and cars coming out of every direction.
03:20He was very, very lucky to escape with the damage that he got.
03:23I reckon Russell Ingle's in a good position here.
03:25He's on the outside of the second row of the grid,
03:27and I reckon we can see a bit of fireworks in the first corner.
03:30Great shot there, Mark Scaife and Glenn Seton.
03:32They swap positions now after Seton's win in heat one.
03:36Scaife was just saying the cars feel very evenly matched, both his and Seton's,
03:39but he's got to win that start. It's absolutely crucial here.
03:42That just looks fantastic, doesn't it? So much colour, so many cars.
03:46Sixteen cars here last year, 27 here today.
03:50The Simmonds Plains Raceway, and we're just a few moments away from the start.
03:54There's the green flag at the back. Now this is the exciting time.
03:57See who gets the jump. Seton got it in race one.
04:00Let's see how Mark Scaife goes. Red light is on, green light.
04:04Away we go. Scaife's got away.
04:06Look at him go!
04:09Look at that loungey.
04:11Craig Lounge to lead it into the first turn.
04:13Russell Ingle second, then we go back to Scaife,
04:16and it was Jason Barguana who got up there as well.
04:19Look at them trying to shovel that back through turn one,
04:21but what an unbelievable slingshot start from Craig Lounge.
04:24You see, and Scaife has both sides of the slingshot, and he went for it.
04:28What a great start. It was amazing.
04:30There was no contact there, quite incredible.
04:32Very good. Lounge takes them out of the hairpin ahead of Russell Ingle.
04:36Then we go back to Mark Scaife, the second of the HRT cars.
04:39We pick up Barguana. He did well off the start.
04:41Seton, then Dick Johnson. Jason Brighton was in there.
04:44There's Steve Reid. The field comes propping on through.
04:47Look at JB. He's passed four cars already.
04:50We'll have our fingers crossed for Glenn Seton after that first corner.
04:53John Bower did much the same trick along the inside of turn one,
04:56took all the undertow off that front spoiler, and that really hurt his handling.
04:59Let's hope Seton's car's OK.
05:01Romano just ahead of Longhurst. Let's go back up the front of the pack.
05:04That's the end of lap one of 22. A long way to go.
05:07This is nice and tight.
05:09Russell Ingle sitting up there in a mobile HRT sandwich.
05:13On board now, this is Mark Scaife.
05:16That was amazing stuff. Russell Ingle and Craig Lounge.
05:19We didn't even know they were starting off the back row of the grid.
05:21They went for it. Pushed themselves right up the order as they brake hard now.
05:25220 kilometers an hour, right down to 50K.
05:29Enormous brake temperatures generated here
05:31as they try and get the fastest run possible out of this hairpin
05:34for maximum speed down the back straight.
05:36It did look like Russell Ingle's car was getting the power down better out of that
05:40because he was pulling away from Scaife on acceleration out of the hairpin.
05:44Well, getting power down. He certainly got the power down pretty good at the start.
05:47He comes up on our race leader now.
05:49Great pictures from the Dunlop in-car camera here.
05:52Russell Ingle down around the bottom section, out of ACL corner.
05:57John Bow continuing his charge through the back of the pack too.
05:59He's up to 20th position for 27.
06:02You can't beat him and Russell's in a hurry.
06:05This is great stuff from the Dunlop boys too.
06:07They thought this was going to be a Bridgestone benefit.
06:09It has been the last two years.
06:10But Russell Ingle's really in the middle of this battle.
06:13You can see Mark Scaife breathing down his neck.
06:15Jason Barguana continuing his surge in the Valvoline Cummins Commodore.
06:19Back there in fourth position.
06:20And Glenn Seaton in fifth. Look how close.
06:23Into the hairpin they go.
06:24Russell was telling me they in fact disengaged the little locking pin that they have for first gear.
06:29So they can in fact get the car back to first gear for that 50km per hour hairpin.
06:33So this big train.
06:35You look at it on the shell.
06:36Helix Racecore.
06:37The weight is sitting at the moment.
06:38Lowndes, Ingle, Scaife, Barguana and Seaton.
06:40That's your shot five.
06:41Johnson back there in sixth.
06:43Larry Perkins in seventh.
06:44Bright still got a battle through.
06:46Romano ninth.
06:47And we work our way through 15th.
06:49Mark has still got a lot of work to do as well.
06:51It's nice and tight up the front.
06:53Have a look at the Valvoline Cummins Commodore of Jason Barguana.
06:56Yet another young gun.
06:57The 25-year-old from Melbourne.
06:59He finished fifth in the opening race.
07:01He's sitting in fourth now.
07:02There he is on screen.
07:03Definitely just starting to give Scaife a bit of power out now.
07:07Look at him.
07:08Fantastic to see this young kid giving another chance.
07:10Up with a big shot at Bathurst.
07:11And I thought well that may be over for him.
07:13But Gary Rogers.
07:14Motorsport gave him his chance.
07:16The second chance.
07:17And he's proving the boss right.
07:19Right up behind Mark Scaife in the factory hold.
07:22And he's right to think of this battle.
07:24And he would be loving.
07:25Well, a former runner-up in the Australian Formula 4 Championship.
07:28He was runner-up last year in the Australian Formula Holder Championship.
07:31Behind the other young star that we talk about.
07:34Jason Bright.
07:35He's ahead of Bright at the moment.
07:36And he's ahead of the defending Australian Touring Car Champion.
07:39Glenn Seaton.
07:40So he'd be loving life at the moment.
07:42Yeah, the young guys are going good.
07:43Bright is in eighth place.
07:45And Romano is in ninth.
07:47Great rounds of 55.44.
07:50JV up to 14th.
07:52That's not bad going, is it?
07:53He's got a real charge on the back of the grid.
07:56Russell Engle.
07:5755.30.
07:59So times roughly the same as they were.
08:02Toward the end of heat one.
08:04See how these tyre performance hangs in over the course of these three races.
08:07Look at that massive crowd down there at the Hair Fitness.
08:10This great V8 action continues.
08:12Glenn Seaton.
08:13We're looking out the front of the Ford Credit Falcon right now.
08:15At the back of Jason Barguana.
08:17It's nice and tight in the top five.
08:19Seaton was showing signs of becoming impatient.
08:22He was looking for the inside run on Barguana not so long ago.
08:25This is the run.
08:26Down the Pepsi back straight and through the sweeper.
08:28They pull sixth gear right there.
08:30Now they get ready and they stop on the brakes and bring it back.
08:34Craig Lowndes.
08:35Craig Lowndes, the fastest man on the track with that 55.185 on lap four, the previous lap.
08:40So Lowndes leads this high speed freight train.
08:43Plenty of variety in there too.
08:46Yeah, Seaton's not the kind of guy to get impatient.
08:48I don't think.
08:49You know, it's what I've ever seen of him.
08:51You know, he's prepared to sit there and wait.
08:53And wait rather than go and do something silly.
08:56So the order.
08:57Lowndes, Ingalls, Scaife, Barguana, Glenn Seaton in fifth.
08:59And they get a little bit of a break back in the back.
09:01Johnson, Jason Bright at the Pertec Ford.
09:03Larry Perkins, Paul Romano and Tony Longhurst at the Castrol Ford in tenth position.
09:07There's Dick Johnson, the Shell Helix Falcon.
09:09And another Falcon behind him, Jason Bright at the Pertec Ford.
09:12Around the hairpin they go.
09:14Now Bright just wants to finish a race and finish it well.
09:17He did well in the first race.
09:19He worked his way back to seventh position.
09:21But he wasn't so happy.
09:23He got caught up and had a few problems in the opening one.
09:27We'll see how he goes in this one.
09:28He currently sits in the same position in which he finished the opening race in seventh.
09:32We go back up the front.
09:33These are your top five.
09:34And Ingalls is staying with Lowndes.
09:36And they've pulled out a little bit of a buffer over Mark Scaife.
09:38Well, it's all holding up the front.
09:40The first of the Fords, they're running in a pack.
09:41Fifth, sixth and seventh position.
09:43That's Seaton, Johnson and Bright.
09:44And a bit of a break back to Longhurst in tenth.
09:47And we've got our fingers crossed, too, that a man missing from the Shell Series this year,
09:51certainly the opening round, is Alan Jones.
09:53Everyone's got their fingers crossed they can pull that deal together
09:55and get back into Komatsu Ford for 1998.
09:57Look at this.
09:58On the outside, Ingalls has a real look.
10:00Letting Frank Lowndes know that he's serious about getting past.
10:03Up the outside, under brakes through the hairpin.
10:05He'll switch back to the inside.
10:06And we've got another drag race in our hands.
10:08They fire out of the hairpin, up the back straight once more.
10:10Expect something from Russell Ingalls here.
10:12What do you reckon, Matt?
10:13Yeah, absolutely.
10:14Absolutely, no doubt.
10:15He's sitting in the slipstream.
10:16They go to the right-hand kink.
10:18And then, you know, maybe have a bit of a go at the inside.
10:22But it's not...
10:23Oh, what was that?
10:24Looked like a bit of fibre.
10:27A bit of fibre.
10:28A cup of fibre.
10:29Something.
10:30A bit of something, wasn't it?
10:31Something.
10:32A good guess, huh?
10:33Lap seven of 22.
10:35A bit like a slowed-in down at all, Ingalls.
10:37Hanging in the shadows.
10:38Car 15.
10:39Now, sand down, without Craig Lowndes.
10:42Team-mate Mark Scape back in third position.
10:44Park One are still hanging there in fourth.
10:46Glint's sitting in fifth.
10:47A sweep under the bridge, building up to 220 miles an hour.
10:50Pull that brake hard with a hairpin once again.
10:52Well, Ingalls is going to get very, very serious about getting past Craig Lowndes.
10:56How about this for an effort?
10:57John Mau from 27th to 10th.
11:00He is flying in the Shell Helix number 18.
11:03And in the privateers' battle too, Greg Crick, the winner from heat one.
11:06He's leading the privateers' battle.
11:07He's back in 14th position overall.
11:09Reed back in 17th.
11:10Downright in his spot.
11:11That's the top three in the privateers' gap.
11:13Just caught a shot top of screen.
11:15Jason Bright has got past Dick Johnson.
11:18So, Bright is up into sixth now and rapidly closing on this top five.
11:24Everyone, that's top six gals.
11:26All running in the 55s, 55.69 for Lowndes.
11:29He slipped off third place from that early lap that you would expect.
11:31But he's still at the place where you want to be, leading his pack.
11:34And, boy, it's getting hot at the front.
11:36This is the view from the rear of Mark Scaife's mobile HRT Commodore.
11:40Looking at Jason Barguana.
11:44He's going to have a tough time.
11:45Yeah, he's going to have a tough time getting past Scaife, I'd say.
11:48Whoa, I saw a big puff of smoke there.
11:49I thought Scaife might have just brushed the fence on the way through.
11:52Yeah, I was going to say, that was down on the tyre.
11:54You know, you can see he went pretty wide in the dirt.
11:56He's pushing him pretty hard.
11:58Ah, looks like he hasn't made contact there.
12:01A big puff of smoke.
12:02Jason Bright making his way through the pack in the 40s.
12:05Up to sixth position.
12:07This is where we're riding now with Mark Scaife in third.
12:10Getting plenty of pressure from Jason Barguana as they head down towards Pepsi Turn.
12:14We're creeping up slowly towards the halfway mark.
12:17So, plenty of time left in this one.
12:19And, I guess, if you stay nice and close, you've still got half a chance, aren't you?
12:22So, Barguana's hanging in there with Mark Scaife.
12:24But have a look at that shot there.
12:26And that gives you an indication of how far Russell Ingle and Craig Lowndes are out in front.
12:30They've certainly crept away, lap by lap, away from Mark.
12:34He locks it up there.
12:35So, Barguana's giving him a hard time.
12:37But Scaife's sitting nicely in third spot at the moment.
12:42That's your dust.
12:43Gets very, very close to the fence there.
12:45But he's using all the track that's available to him.
12:47And Jason Barguana has a look at the outside.
12:50Gets very, very close to the fence.
12:53He's nearly back at car five zero.
12:55Can't get closer than that.
12:59Jason Bright with the third quickest lap on that last lap.
13:02And he is reeling in Glenn Seaton.
13:04When he arrives with Seaton, and they are top of screen, will he be able to catch him?
13:08That's the question.
13:09And hopefully, we'll be able to answer that for you after this break.
13:12We'll be back on your home of motorsport with more action from Simmons Planes.
13:25Welcome back. You're watching race two, round two of the Shell Australian Touring Car Championship.
13:30This is the rear view from Mark Scaife's car.
13:32While we go inside and watch him hard at work.
13:34And he's been able to pull out a little bit of a gap over Jason Barguana in the Valvoline Cummins Commodore.
13:39There's some great little battles.
13:40Because there's a battle between Lowndes and Engels.
13:42Scaife and Barguana.
13:44And Seaton and Jason Bright.
13:48Jason Bright put in a really quick one there.
13:50He's closed the gap right under Glenn Seaton.
13:52So there's three separate battles in the top six.
13:55Oh, look at the flames belching from Darcy Russell's car there.
13:59From the privateers.
14:00Hopefully, he'll give Scaife racing room.
14:03Yep, pulls over to the inside.
14:05Down the Pepsi back straight.
14:07Winding up for the big turn right through the sweep up.
14:12Lowndes is out in front and he's doing it quite comfortably.
14:15In fact, he's crept away a little bit from Russell Engel there.
14:17That's just typical.
14:18It's almost like exactly what he did at the standout.
14:20Fairly quiet opening heat.
14:21Then bang, heat two.
14:22Hello, I'm back.
14:23I was talking to Paul Wisely, HRT publicist, the other day.
14:27And he was saying he can't put his finger on it,
14:29but he has seen a different Craig Lowndes in 1996
14:34since his experience overseas.
14:36Just look in the background there, Lee.
14:37It looks like Jason Bright has actually snuck past Glenn Seaton.
14:40So he's on a real charge on the Vertex board.
14:42Bright is doing really good things down there.
14:45He wasn't the quickest that lap around, obviously,
14:47because he was fighting with Glenn to get past.
14:49But he was putting in some very quick laps.
14:51In fact, just before he made that move, the lap before,
14:53he was almost a second quicker than Glenn.
14:55So we'll keep our eyes on that.
14:57Meanwhile, up front.
14:59There he is.
15:00Yeah, he's there.
15:01So he has.
15:02He's snuck in front of Seaton.
15:03Seaton is watching his times there.
15:05Slipping back quite badly.
15:06A 57.8 last time around.
15:08Everybody else running in the 56 and the high 55s.
15:12Paul Romano starting to put the pressure on Dick Johnson there as well.
15:15He's got a problem.
15:16Oh, yeah.
15:17Been watching his times fall away.
15:18And there's a battle coming up here between...
15:21Yep, Johnson sneaks through on the inside for Paul Romano,
15:24who's here.
15:25He's giving him a real run for his money.
15:27Well, if he can get that, he'll be up into 8th position.
15:29Meanwhile, our race 1 winner and defending champion Glenn Seaton
15:33has got problems.
15:34Will he come into the pits?
15:35Yeah.
15:36If he does, so...
15:37No point in continuing with that amount of production in speed.
15:40He's got some problem with the car, which he can't get around.
15:44And that's very rarely you'll see Seaton pull out of a shell
15:46Australian Touring Car Championship heat.
15:48He's been tremendously consistent in this series.
15:50So that'll be a big disappointment to him,
15:52particularly after his victory in heat 1.
15:54Well, some movers up there in the top 10.
15:56John Bauer has come from 27th to 9th,
15:59and John Faulkner in the better electrical Commodore
16:02from 22nd to 10th.
16:04So there have been some big movers in the pack, that's for sure.
16:07Meanwhile, we see car number 11, the Castrol Commodore of Larry Perkins.
16:12Larry at the moment sits in 6th.
16:14There's that battle with Johnson and Romano just in behind Larry.
16:17He's doing it fairly comfortable there.
16:19He's got no one in front or immediately behind.
16:21So he's enjoying a nice ride on lap 15 of 22 here at Simmonds Plains.
16:25Well, it's interesting, isn't it,
16:26when you look at the domination of Holden Racing Team.
16:28Look at this. Paul Romano off the inside.
16:30Very, very close.
16:31He's actually just rubbed the rear bumper of Johnson.
16:34Johnson's got his work cut out for him here.
16:36The young Queenslander, Paul Romano.
16:39Son of former sports car racer, Bap Romano.
16:42Supports his son's career all the way through.
16:45And Paul's really getting a move on here.
16:47He's moving on to the latest generation Bridgestone tyre from 1998.
16:50And the car is very well sorted now.
16:52Running R.E.D. engines.
16:55So, he's under attack the whole way around here.
16:58Dick Johnson trying to hold out the young Queenslander.
17:00Well, and in the background, just got a quick shot there.
17:02Here comes J.B.
17:04John Bauer's creeping right up on the back of this battle.
17:06And Paul Romano's going to have his hands full any minute.
17:09Swamping across the back there of Dick Johnson.
17:11Romano's got the inside run through the sweeper.
17:13And he's got him.
17:15So Romano is now up in the 7th position.
17:19On board with Dick Johnson.
17:21That's exactly the sort of performance they wanted from Simmons Baines.
17:24I hope Bap's been whinging all year about having to fund this thing out of his own pocket.
17:28I'd like to see some stronger performances from the car.
17:31A Shell Helix on board Canberra.
17:33You're riding with Dick Johnson as Paul Romano sneaks through and takes 7th position.
17:37So the order now.
17:38Lowndes, Ingalls, Scaife, Barwana, Bright, Perkins.
17:40And this is the battle for 7th and 8th position.
17:43John Bauer, the quickest that last lap.
17:45He is flying.
17:48Up there.
17:49And he can see his teammate Dick Johnson not too far ahead.
17:51Now that's where he had his mishap in race 1.
17:54He has fought back so well.
17:5618 places he's gone.
17:58That's why they call him the Tazzy Tiger.
18:00He's from Tasmania, obviously.
18:01But the tiger in him is what's made him so consistent and so successful in motor racing throughout his career.
18:06He never, ever gives up.
18:08Stephen Richards is another one who's done very well.
18:11He's come from 17th up into 10th position.
18:14So he's been working very hard in his second race as well.
18:17We watch the 2-shell helix cars.
18:1917th and 18th, Dick Johnson.
18:21Who, incidentally, is the only guy in the last 10 years who has won a round here at Simmons Plains more than once.
18:28He cleaned up the late 80s.
18:3088, 89 and 1990.
18:32He won 3 in a row.
18:34And nobody else has done that.
18:35There's been plenty who have won single time.
18:37Seton, Jones, Scaife, JB, Craig Lowndes and Greg Murphy.
18:41But will we see someone win again?
18:43Ah, John Faulkner's in the pits.
18:45With a fuel leak.
18:47Fuel leaks, we're told, from pit lane.
18:49So, that one car's running around with fuel pouring out of the back of it.
18:53So, unfortunately, that one's going to be pushed to the rear of the pits, I think.
18:57Meanwhile, at the front.
18:59It looks now like Craig Lowndes has got it on cruise control.
19:02He's pulled out 1.7, nearly 1.8 second gap over Russell Engle.
19:07And there's no sense in making it any more.
19:10You know, he's controlling it from the front, controlling the gap.
19:13It's just 1.7, 1.8.
19:16He's probably using the traffic very effectively, too, Barry.
19:19You saw that in the first set.
19:20You've only got to get boxed in behind a couple of slower cars.
19:23It can cost you full time.
19:25Russell's doing the same sort of lap times, but somewhere along the way.
19:27You can see him flashing his headlights off.
19:29Trying to find his way past Peter Doolman.
19:32Gives him racing room.
19:33Snikes down the inside there.
19:34He's got a winch commodore right in front of him to dispose of as they get on the back straight.
19:38Which he does pretty quickly.
19:40So 1.8 seconds the gap between Craig Lowndes and Russell Engle.
19:44And Mark Scaife back in third.
19:46Bhagwana, Bryce Perkins, and Marno continuing his charge.
19:49Bauer, that's a really sensational run from right back there.
19:53Last position on the grid.
19:54He's up to eighth position and still charging.
19:56Good run by Russell Engle.
19:57He got that dynamite start along with Craig Lowndes.
20:00They haven't looked back.
20:01Mark Scaife is trying desperately.
20:03And he's catching Russell Engle with just four laps left to run in race two.
20:08Could we see a very exciting and Bhagwana just coming through past Hossack and Peter Doolman there.
20:13We go back on board with Mark.
20:15And the really interesting thing here, guys,
20:17you look at Hulk and Ocean's team's success here over the last years.
20:20This is all starting to fall in their hands again.
20:22First and third positions at the moment in heat two.
20:24They're looking like they're going to get a very strong result,
20:27but the points keep falling their way.
20:28They said that they weren't trying to focus on that.
20:31All they wanted to do was finish and get some good points in the bag.
20:34But if you can't help but finish once, you want to take this on then.
20:38So Russell Engle now will start to feel a bit of heat from Mark Scaife.
20:42In car 50, the Oval Holden Racing Team Commodore.
20:46Russell Engle, Dunlop lead in the Bridgestone Sandwich at the moment.
20:50Shell Helix race score tells the story.
20:52Lowndes 1.5 seconds up the road from Engle.
20:55Scaife just closing the gap all the time to the Castrol Holden.
20:58Bhagwana in fourth.
20:59And there it is, six through ten.
21:01Stephen Richards climbing into the top ten.
21:03This might give Scaife a bit of a chance now.
21:06Engle's coming up on the back markers.
21:09So sometimes you just falter a little bit, you know,
21:13trying to get past somebody.
21:14Engle's the guy behind you, just the extra guy you want here.
21:18See Scaife getting sideways under power as he came under the bridge there.
21:21Shows how tough these tyres are working out here.
21:23Oh, up alongside Engle.
21:26So you go in wide and come out tight.
21:28Try and get a run up.
21:30Yes.
21:31Got a good move out of there.
21:32Good run by Mark Scaife.
21:33We go on board now.
21:34He pulls up alongside Russell Engle.
21:36Russell has a look over.
21:38Scaife says, here we go.
21:40Side by side through the sweeper.
21:42Engle's not giving up either.
21:44Look at this.
21:45Engle's on the wrong side though.
21:46That's the problem.
21:47240 kilometres an hour side by side.
21:49Boy, oh boy.
21:50Don't get the adrenaline pumping.
21:51But Scaife was there.
21:52Oh, got him up the inside.
21:53Engle's coming back on the inside.
21:55But Scaife covers his tracks again.
21:57Good work there by both drivers.
21:59Mark Scaife now moves up in the second spot
22:01with just two laps remaining in this second race.
22:04And if he can hang on to this,
22:06this is going to be some pretty good points
22:08in the bag for HRT.
22:10Top privateer at the moment is Greg Crick.
22:13Doing very well from Peter Dorman and Ryan McLeod.
22:15They're your top three at the moment.
22:17Crick currently running back in 12th position,
22:19just outside the top ten.
22:20And big cheer for the crowd
22:22as Mark Scaife finds his way past Engle.
22:24That was a tremendous moment up through the sweeper there.
22:27Another one was prepared to back off.
22:29Engle on the inside, Scaife on the outside.
22:31But Scaife had a little bit more,
22:33or a better launch out of the hairpin,
22:35over the back straight.
22:36Just about to carry that all the way down
22:38through the sweeper down to the Pepsi corner.
22:40Now he's left Engle a fair way behind.
22:42He's only got a lap and a half remaining.
22:45Credit to the young guys too.
22:47Jason Barguana, you can just see him,
22:49he's the second car in shot now,
22:51has stayed in touch and he's sitting in fourth spot.
22:53Jason Bright is in fifth.
22:55So that's a great effort.
22:56There's Barguana just coming into shot.
22:58We have got one more lap left to run.
23:00They're on their way home here at Simmons Plains.
23:02Can Russell Engle come back?
23:04I was going to say,
23:05don't count Russell Engle out of this yet.
23:06This guy is a terrier.
23:08He won't give up until that checkered flag falls.
23:09He's getting really close to Scaife
23:11as they hammer down straight once again
23:13down toward the hairpin for the final time.
23:15Can he get past the Bobo Hawks?
23:18Well, he's going to have to get an exceptional run
23:20out of this hairpin.
23:21He comes right up on Mark Scaife now.
23:23As we saw earlier,
23:25the over and under trick used by Mark Scaife.
23:27He did a tremendous job.
23:29That's where he lost it just there.
23:30You can just see he was trying to get the power on.
23:32The tail snapped out a little bit
23:33and that just gave Scaife a little traction advantage
23:36which gave him that maximum speed down the back straight.
23:39Here they come.
23:40They're on their way home.
23:41It's going to be an HRT 1-2.
23:43There's your race leader there, Craig Lowndes,
23:45just going through shot.
23:46The checkered flag is out here at Simmons
23:48and the Kemp does it.
23:49Craig Lowndes takes out Race 2 here at Simmons Plains.
23:52His teammate in the Bobo Holden Racing Team,
23:56Commodore Mark Scaife, will pick up second.
23:58A good run by Russell Engle in for third
24:00and so too for Jason Barguana.
24:02Well, that's really moving up the order for young Jason,
24:05the kid from Como in New South Wales,
24:07having his Shell Series debut in 1998
24:10and really mixing it with the stars early in the season
24:12and August as well, but later in the championship.
24:15Well, a good, hard, fast race.
24:18Well, he's done it again, hasn't he, Lowndes?
24:20He's like, bang, out of the box.
24:22Just gapped him on that opening lap
24:24and he held it to the finish.
24:25He won the round here in 1996.
24:27Could he be heading that way again?
24:29It's looking promising at this stage.
24:31Let's check the final placings on the Shell Helix race score.
24:34The HRT 1-2, Lowndes and Scaife,
24:36followed by Engle and Barguana
24:38and Jason Bright in the Pertec Falcon in for fifth.
24:41Sixth place went to Larry Perkins.
24:43A good, steady run for Larry.
24:44John Bough, unbelievable, 20 places from 27th to seventh.
24:48Paul Romano in for eighth.
24:50Steve Richards and Dick Johnson.
24:58During the race, sometimes the car loses balance
25:01and with this particular car, with the Castrol Falcon,
25:04we've got an adjustable rear sway bar.
25:07So if we set the car up correctly in qualifying early in the race,
25:11the car's neutral so it slides through the corners
25:13without any oversteer and understeer.
25:15That's how you want it.
25:16As the race goes on, normally the rear tyres start to overheat
25:19and you start to lose traction.
25:21And that's when you see the car start to oversteer.
25:23So what we can do is pull this lever back a couple of notches
25:26all the way back and get more grip at the back
25:28and that brings the car back to being neutral.
25:30Or otherwise, perhaps with the changing conditions
25:33or changing track temperatures, the car might pick up understeer.
25:36What we do then is stiffen the rear of the car back up
25:38and that allows the front of the car to turn in.
25:40We've also got an adjustable brake bias.
25:43So as we're coming into a corner,
25:45sometimes you'll see the cars lock up the front brakes.
25:47What you need to do then is put brakes to the rear.
25:50But if you go too far to the back,
25:51then you can lock up the back and spin around.
25:53So it's very important you get the brake balance right,
25:56you get the car trim right
25:57and then your overall lap times are a little bit quicker.
