00:00Thanks a lot, Lee. Well, I'm down here with our Larry. Now, Larry, what's the new VT going like?
00:04Well, firstly, it's not new anymore. Look what they've done to my nice car.
00:08It's funny, you know, every race these days you come in with, well, not only you come in with, it's getting so hard now, isn't it?
00:14Well, it is. It's really hectic. I mean, unless you want to make the most of every yard you've got, you ain't going to come first, I can tell you. So, yeah, you've got to have a go.
00:22And what about the new car by comparison to the old one?
00:25Oh, look, it's everything we thought it would be. It's the best-looking race car of all time because it's this latest VT.
00:32But it's got carry-over engine, gearbox, wheels, brakes, so it's actually, you know, quicker.
00:38But it's going to be the same pace as our VS, and that's what the regulation said it had to be. It's not allowed to be any quicker.
00:44But we're very happy with it because it looks great.
00:47And what about when you're driving it? Is there, you know, for the punter at home like me, for example, is there a difference between driving the VS and the VT?
00:54Does it feel any different in any way?
00:56Yeah, it does feel a little bit different because I'm sitting back about three inches further to the back, and it sort of takes a bit of getting used to the tunnel sort of vision you get.
01:04And I've got a different steering rack ratio in it, and it's a bit slow, and I'm doing a lot of turning on the wheels, so it's only a little bit different.
01:12But at the end of the day, it still does feel the same.
01:15Right, so you're finishing two. Are you going to finish in three, then?
01:19I know. Well, I've got to finish this next one. I'm, you know, down about a tenth and a ninth, I think, and that's not all that flash.
01:26But, you know, we can only get better.
01:28That's all boys got to stick together, eh, Larry?
01:30Oh, why not? Why not?
01:32All right, thanks a lot.
01:33Cheers, mate.
01:41Welcome back to a very wet Calder Park where we were talking about it during race two.
01:46It wasn't quite a thunderstorm, but it was certainly an extreme shower.
01:50And this is Greg Murphy in the new VT Commodore going out and testing the circuit a short time ago after we had this huge downpour here at the circuit.
01:58Officials have been out, Tim Schenken from Cams, and it seriously was a very bad situation.
02:05And, well, we must say it has never happened in the history of the Shell Australian Touring Car Championship.
02:10This race has been cancelled.
02:12Now, that has never happened.
02:13As I said, we just checked up with our statistician, Nigel Greenway, and it's never happened.
02:17A race has been stopped short, and we won't have race three here today, Barry.
02:21Quite extraordinary circumstance.
02:23Quite extraordinary, but there's no way they could start a race.
02:25But there's so much surface water down at turn one and turn two, or between turn two and turn three,
02:30that it would just be so dangerous, you know, because it's very quick, the approach to turn one.
02:35It's in 260-odd k's, and you could not run a race like that.
02:39They've been trying to clear the water, but what happens, you know, as far as they're clearing it,
02:42it's been absolutely bucketing down.
02:44And, you know, you can see there there's still surface water on the track,
02:48but I'd be very doubtful if they can run it.
02:51Well, they have officially cooled it off, and it really was a tough circumstance.
02:57There's some shots there of that corner that was flooded right up halfway to the ripple strip.
03:01The guys worked very hard trying to broom it off, and they did successfully do that.
03:06But now the rain has come back and has just left them with no option but to cancel this race.
03:12It was a shame, because it was such a good day.
03:14It was going so well for Jason Barguana winning race two and Craig Lowndes.
03:17Well, exactly, and it would have been nice to see how Russell Engle could have done,
03:21because the Dunlops are really good in the rain, and it would have been nice, you know,
03:24and especially for Barguana, you know, first win of the series, first win ever for him.
03:29But that's life, you know, at least nobody got hurt, and a few people got wet,
03:34and there's a few sticky spectators, isn't there?
03:37Well, it was a good day for Craig Lowndes.
03:39He leads the points after two races, and obviously will win the day,
03:43and we'll talk with him in just a moment.
03:47But Jason Barguana, let's get back to him.
03:49I went down after race two and spoke with the Gary Rogers team, and they were just so overwhelmed.
03:55Well, incredible, you know.
03:56The funny thing was that before the race started, Lisa, you watched Barguana in this,
04:00and as far as I can say, you picked my lotto numbers.
04:03That was a bit of luck.
04:04Well, let's go down in pit lane, now a very wet pit lane, and here's Craig Lowndes.
04:09Well, we're here in pit lane, stuck in these wet and windy conditions with our birthday boy, Craig Lowndes.
04:14This isn't the way to celebrate a birthday, is it?
04:16I hope not.
04:17It's definitely not the right conditions.
04:20It came in all of a hurry, and I don't think it's going to stay around.
04:24I think it's going to go very quick, so it's interesting.
04:27I don't think, personally, I wouldn't like to go out there.
04:30You've had a better look at the track conditions.
04:32It looks like there's a lot of puddles forming around there.
04:34I guess, in a car, travelling at these speeds, that's pretty treacherous for you blokes.
04:37Well, it is.
04:38I think Bathurst is the closest I've ever been to this type of condition,
04:41and really, this is our test circuit.
04:43We've been out here on days where it's sort of been half this wet, and we've had problems.
04:48So, really, then you've got the drag strip.
04:50Definitely, there's sections around the circuit where you'll get puddles hanging around,
04:54and 30, 40 cars running around won't disperse it very quickly.
04:58Well, just looking at the first two heats that have gone today in dry conditions,
05:01I know Russell Engle is praying for rain all day.
05:03He wants to get into it. He wants to get stuck into it,
05:05because he says it's about his only chance to claw back some ground to you blokes.
05:08So, how do you feel about that?
05:10Let him go.
05:12No, I'll go out if the stewards say we have to race,
05:16but, as I said, it's going to be very, very treacherous,
05:19not only for, I guess, the spectators not being able to see us,
05:21I think the TV guys will be able to see us.
05:24It's just really going to be very, very, I guess, visible for us.
05:28It's going to be very bad.
05:30Looking at Russell Engle's problem with his front brake hose in that heat one,
05:37it's just amazing looking at your form.
05:39It's like luck is just starting to tumble your way as we get toward the end of the championship.
05:43Oh, I wouldn't call it luck.
05:45I guess, well, it's something, you know, our guys do a lot of preparation on these cars,
05:50and I guess that's just a freak, something like that, what Russell had has gone wrong.
05:54I guess it can happen.
05:57I wouldn't call it luck, but it's, you know, I just like to call it good preparation.
06:01Do you feel yourself now leading the championship, opening up a little bit of a gap?
06:05Do you feel a temptation to start driving a little bit more conservatively, I think,
06:08or is it just maximum attack right to the end?
06:11Definitely. At the moment, I went on the, I guess, the comfort zone
06:15and just sort of sat back and let everybody else do the dirty work,
06:17but now I've sort of charged back from behind, I want to say there,
06:20and at the moment I just have to keep charging.
06:23Okay, well, we're still waiting for a decision on whether you guys are going to race.
06:26Wish you all the best.
06:27Thank you very much.
06:30Well, there's absolutely no chance of them racing.
06:32Once again, if you've just joined us here on Network 10, it is official, race three.
06:36The third and final race today has been cancelled.
06:39These are scenes live here at Calder Park.
06:42Just water absolutely everywhere.
06:44The teams, the officials have been talking about it, and that decision had to be made.
06:48And that corner there that we're seeing on camera right now,
06:50that was totally cleared of water not less than 15 minutes ago,
06:53and we've just had another shower, and the crowd are heading on home,
06:57and it's all over here at Calder Park.
06:59It's unfortunate. Race one wasn't too bad.
07:02Race two was very exciting, and we were heading for a cracker in race three,
07:06and especially the Dunlop people were hoping for a little bit of wet weather.
07:11Now, this is live pictures coming to you from in the pits,
07:14they're inside a garage, Jason Bright, Jason Barguana, and Craig Lowndes.
07:19Now, they will be the top three on the day, which is fantastic.
07:25Now, I've just been informed this is just a couple of rooms
07:28down from where we are in the commentary box, and this is great.
07:31The three young guys, 24, Craig Lowndes in turn today,
07:3425 is Jason Bright, and 26 years of age, Jason Barguana.
07:39We're witnessing a changing of the guard in the V8 supercars.
07:42I know the more experienced drivers won't like to hear that,
07:45but it really is encouraging to see these three happy young guys up there on the podium.
07:51Jason Bright was, I spoke to him not long after race two,
07:54he was very happy with his performance today, but a little bit disappointed
07:58that his old sparring partner, Jason Barguana, beat him to the first win.
08:03Well, it's going to be a very dramatic and exciting end to 1998 in terms of the motorsport season.
08:08Let's have a look at it now, because it's going to be fantastic.
08:11The Tickford 500 kicks it off at Sandown on the 13th of September.
08:15Now, don't forget, Craig Lowndes and Greg Murphy are the reigning champs of that race.
08:19However, in the endurance races, Mark Scaife and Craig Lowndes will be driving together.
08:23The World Motorcycle Grand Prix, the 125s, the 250s, the 500s, they're all there.
08:28It's going to be a great end to the year.
08:30Rally Australia and topping it off the Australian 1000 Classic at Bathurst.
08:34Now, these are, once again, live pictures coming to you from Calder Park,
08:38and everybody is basically packing up and heading on home.
08:42A little bit disappointing, but nonetheless, we did see some very exciting races in Race 1 and Race 2.
08:51And before we get to some Formula Ford action, I must say, it's a little disappointing for Russell Ingle.
08:56Well, it's really disappointing, because his Dunlop tyres work really well in these conditions.
09:01All day long, he's been going, oh, spits of rain. Is it raining?
09:04Go outside and have a look. Is it raining?
09:06It's really sad, because Craig stretched his lead over Russell,
09:10and it didn't give Russell the time to sort of respond to it.
09:13But that's life, you know. Russell could break... Craig could break down the next two races.
09:18Well, sure. That lead has now gone out to some 36 points, I think.
09:22And let's remember that Russell Ingle turned a 40-point lead around on Craig Lowndes.
09:27So we'll wait and see what happens there.
09:30We've got some great action coming up now from the Formula Fords.
09:32Let's take a look at it, because these young guys turned it on today, big time, in Race 1 and Race 2.
09:37Now, Tim Ley was the man who was doing the business in Race 1.
09:40He turned on a really good display, and he leads this one from young Christian Jones.
09:44Greg Ritter in there in the Valvoline entry as well.
09:46And also Alex Davison, who's a real young up-and-comer.
09:50Christian Murchison, the guy who won, the young guy, the young Western Australian,
09:53who absolutely cleaned up in WA three weeks ago.
09:57He had a spin in Race 1 and was a long way back, and that certainly made life hard.
10:02Big action in this one.
10:04We see Justin Cotter just avoid an incident there as the Witcher's Hats went flying.
10:09Murchison a couple of positions back, trying to work his way up.
10:12But Tim Ley, who is one of the Ford Brad Pack, who in fact, well, so long as the weather's all right,
10:20he will actually get his first taste of V8 supercar racing here at Calder Park tomorrow,
10:25because he's going to test Jason Bright's Pertec Ford.
10:28So Tim Ley is a very excited young guy at the moment, the young bloke from Orange in New South Wales.
10:34He's leading this race at the moment.
10:36Of course, this is off tape from earlier in the day.
10:38Christian Murchison, or rather, Christian Jones in the OAMS Spectrum,
10:43right in there behind him, hassling him all the way.
10:45Now here's the young guy that we've been talking about, the young West Aussie,
10:48Christian Murchison in the Bunnings Warehouse car.
10:50Didn't have a great day at all.
10:53In fact, it was a complete contrast to what happened in Perth,
10:56where he cleaned up in both races and won by more than four seconds on both occasions.
11:00Had very bad luck today.
11:02But here's Christian Jones really putting the squeeze on Tim Ley.
11:05Tim Ley's got the inside line in the Ford Credit number.
11:09Christian trying to go around the outside, couldn't quite get there.
11:12Now 27, Steve Owen, he really put in a great drive today.
11:17He's sitting there in third spot, starting to come up on the back of Christian Jones and Greg Ritter.
11:22He's not out of it either.
11:25Down through the back section.
11:27These guys lap fairly quickly around the circuit as well.
11:32And we had a very strong field of Formula Fours here at Calder Park again today,
11:37numbers upwards of 40.
11:41But keep your eyes out for this guy in the future and remember his name,
11:44because he's certainly consistently one of the top five in the Formula Ford class,
11:48although he drifted a little wide and let Christian Jones on the inside.
11:52Christian Jones, of course, if you haven't seen Formula Fours before,
11:56is the son of 1980 World Formula One champ Alan Jones.
12:02And this young guy is well on the way to a very successful racing career
12:06and perhaps following in the footsteps of his father.
12:08He's considering heading overseas next year as Tim Ley really puts the pressure on young Christian.
12:15Steve Owen comes on the inside of Tim Ley.
12:18This racing was always just so fast and frantic and plenty of moves.
12:21Now Tim Ley, let's take a look at that within the space of half a lap,
12:24has gone from first back to third.
12:26Greg Ritter there in the Valvoline entry.
12:28Another member of the Ford Brat Pack.
12:30Three drivers were chosen to be taken under the wings of V8 drivers.
12:34And of course they were Tim Ley, Greg Ritter and Adam Macro,
12:37the current points leader in the Formula Fours.
12:40Ley doesn't want to give up though and he charges back on the inside to block that line for Greg Ritter.
12:44Steve Owen in the red 27 number there,
12:46trying hard to force the issue with Christian Jones in the OAM Spectrum.
12:50The Australian built car, Mike Borland, the man who builds those cars here in Melbourne.
12:58And I can tell you that Alan Jones, although we can't see him on camera,
13:01he watches every one of Christian's races with a lot of interest and a lot of enthusiasm.
13:05He'd be hanging off the pit wall there hoping that Christian can hang on.
13:08Now there's a witch's hat out in the middle there.
13:10Greg Ritter collected that but it spat out the back quite nicely.
13:13Have a look at this, Steve Owen on the inside, a beautiful passing manoeuvre on Christian Jones.
13:18Tim Ley's going to have to watch out because Greg Ritter is all over the back of him.
13:21So we now have a four-way battle for the lead of this race.
13:27If you've just joined us here on Network 10, your home of motorsport,
13:29these are pictures from tape earlier in the day.
13:33Race three of the V8 Supercars, round eight of the Shell Australian Touring Car Championship,
13:37has been called off, it has been cancelled due to an extreme downpour on the track.
13:42Well, basically, in a nutshell, undriveable.
13:45This was a terrific battle, it continued on and on.
13:47It was reflections and almost a duplicate of race one where they were swapping positions all the time.
13:52But certainly Steve Owen wasn't out in front in race one, it was Tim Ley virtually all the way.
13:57But Steve Owen was the man this time.
13:59Christian Jones sitting in second spot, there he is, number six, the OAM Spectrum.
14:03And Tim Ley back in third position.
14:06A spin here.
14:08This is a replay of the earlier incident.
14:11Car 26.
14:13Coming to grief here, that's Steve Newing in the Swift.
14:16But appeared to be OK.
14:18And you quite often see these young guys get tangled up and lose wheels,
14:21and front and rear ends, they fold quite easily.
14:24And he was all right.
14:25Steve Owen is doing a terrific job in the 27 machine.
14:30The Team Arrow Spectrum, another Australian entry.
14:34And Tim Ley, as we were watching that replay,
14:37managed to slip up past Christian Jones and relegate him to third spot.
14:41Christian's a fighter, though.
14:42The young Queenslander, he doesn't give in.
14:44Looking for an inside run there on Tim Ley.
14:46And have a look at the guy at the back, Greg Ritter, displaying great patience.
14:49Hasn't tried anything desperate as yet, just keeps on battling on there in fourth spot.
14:56The four-way battle is about to become five.
14:58We've got another car coming in on the back there.
15:00That's the wins entry of Lex Davison, nephew of John Davison,
15:04the promoter of the Sandown Motor Raceway.
15:09And have a look at Christian Jones taking that really defensive inside line down the main straight.
15:13But look at Tim Ley, plenty of speed.
15:15He's wrapped him right up.
15:16He got a great draft down there.
15:18Heaps of effect off the slipstream, and he's gone from third straight into the number one spot.
15:22Greg Ritter goes around the outside, tries his luck on Christian Jones.
15:25So it is now truly a five-way battle.
15:27Tim Ley leads the way from Steve Owen.
15:29Then we go back to Christian Jones.
15:31Greg Ritter sitting in fourth.
15:33And then we go back to Davison.
15:35Alex Davison doing a great job there in fifth position.
15:38He qualified extremely well.
15:42Down the back section of the circuit.
15:43Well, Steve Owen, he's had his share.
15:45That is the 27 machine sitting in second spot.
15:47The team arrow entry, trying to get past.
15:51The Ford Credit Bunnings entry of Tim Ley out in front.
15:56The young guy from Orange, who's just dying to get in a V8 supercar tomorrow.
16:01He has a test here.
16:03And Jason rides Pertek Ford, and we certainly know that's quick enough.
16:07Jason finishing on the podium today in top three.
16:12Christian Jones isn't giving up in third spot either.
16:16Now, there's a huge incentive for these guys to do well in the championship.
16:19And Adam Macro, who isn't in this battle, incidentally, isn't in this top five, certainly in the race.
16:25Here's the guy who leads the championship at the moment.
16:27There he goes. He just went through in the orange and green Formula Ford.
16:30He leads his championship.
16:31And for the winner of the Formula Ford championship,
16:35they get to drive in one of Tony Longhurst's cars at the Australian 1000 Classic at Bathurst.
16:40So there's a big incentive for these young guys.
16:42And just have a look at the current crop of V8 supercar drivers.
16:45The majority of them are graduates from the Formula Ford ranks.
16:48Just look at the top three that were on the podium today.
16:50Lowndes, Brighton, Barguana, all graduates of this class.
16:53Two of them Brighton Lowndes, former champions.
16:57So the five-way battle continues.
16:59Tim Ley not giving up one bit.
17:01Steve Owen, Christian Jones, Greg Ritter, and Alex Davison.
17:04They are five. It's unchanged.
17:10Down the main straight, and it's Tim Ley who comes across.
17:14He's got a big lead over Steve Owen as well.
17:17Really, it's a great characteristic of Christian Jones.
17:21Christian Jones, he does not give in very much like he's down.
17:24Look at him. He locks it up on the inside.
17:26He's overcooked it too.
17:27Steve Owen was quick to nip back up on the inside, the over and under trick.
17:30But Christian is not giving in.
17:32He knows that he needs to get a second spot to stay in the points hunt
17:35because he's sitting second in the championship.
17:37He can't afford to let Adam Macro get away in terms of points on him.
17:41Tim Ley's looking nice and comfortable out in front from Steve Owen.
17:44And then we go back to Christian Jones.
17:47Greg Ritter, nice and patient.
17:50Maybe not so the guy behind him in Alex Davison looking for a way past.
17:54You can see a few cars discarded on the side of the track there.
17:57That just is one of the things that happens in Formula Ford.
18:00It's really cutthroat racing, but it breeds tremendous drivers.
18:04We have guys from this category that are overseas at the moment.
18:07Marcus Ambrose competing in the British Formula Ford Championship.
18:10He's going so well.
18:11David Bernard, who is a former champion of this category,
18:14is leading currently the U.S. Formula Ford 2000 category.
18:19He's had something like five wins from seven starts.
18:22So not only does Australia breed great two-wheeled racers
18:26like Wade Gardner and Mick Doohan,
18:28we're breeding great four-wheel drivers as well.
18:30Plenty of action there.
18:32Car 48 getting a little out of shape.
18:36Managing to gather it all up.
18:40Now, look at these two guys caught together.
18:43Teammates, Murchison and Starr.
18:47Christian Murchison there, not happy.
18:49He was running in the top five before we came into today's round,
18:53and his Bunnings Warehouse car is just crunched.
18:58You wouldn't believe it was the same guy, the 17-year-old,
19:00who cleaned up the Barbagello Raceway three weeks ago.
19:04Anyway, that's racing, and it's his first full season in Formula Ford,
19:07so he's learned a valuable lesson this year.
19:11He spun in turn one and then got collected by his teammate.
19:17Had nowhere to go.
19:20Quite often you see that in turn one.
19:21We get back to the battle, the five-way battle,
19:23as it may have grown by this stage.
19:25It looks like it has.
19:27Owen Kelly is tagging onto the back of it.
19:29Oh, there's contact there between Ley and Steve Owen.
19:32Owen has gone, and Ley has lost the lead.
19:34So Christian Jones jumps up into the number one spot,
19:36and have a look at Greg Ritter.
19:37Ritter's on the inside as well now.
19:39So Greg Ritter jumping in on the inside.
19:41This is fantastic action in the Formula Fords.
19:44It has changed all around.
19:45We are on our way home.
19:47This is the last lap.
19:48So Christian Jones in the OAM Spectrum, the Australian-built car,
19:52well, if he can hang in where he is,
19:55he's on his way to a win.
19:56Fantastic stuff.
19:59Greg Ritter slotting into that second spot.
20:02Tim Ley, well, you have to feel a little sorry for him.
20:04Steve Owen came in contact with him heading into turn one.
20:07Ritter staying right on the pace.
20:08He's going to have to guard that second spot.
20:10This is it, last corner, last lap.
20:12The chequered flag is out.
20:14Christian Jones, well, he picked up third in the first race earlier today,
20:19and that's a win in race two.
20:20Well done to the young Queenslander.
20:22That will certainly help his championship points.
20:25It will keep him in the hunt.
20:26Greg Ritter in the Gary Rogers Valvoline Cummins.
20:29Effort finished in second spot.
20:31Tim Ley third, Alex Davison fourth,
20:33and Owen Kelly rounding out the top five.
20:36Ty Hanger out of macro, Steve Owen, Justin Cotter,
20:39and Ben Savage rounding out the top ten.
20:42Well, if you've just joined us here on Network Ten,
20:45your home of motorsport, race three was unfortunately cancelled
20:48through wet weather.
20:49The track was just, well, it was undrivable and it was unsafe.
20:52So that was it.
20:54It's never happened in the history of the Shell Australian Touring Car Championship,
20:56and we have to deal with it and push on.
20:58We'll be back right after this break with more.
21:01Imagine you're hurtling down the straight of Darwin's new Hidden Valley Circuit
21:05and 280 k's.
21:07There's a hairpin turn at the end.
21:09Who would you want behind the wheel?
21:15Welcome back to Calder Park.
21:16Well, this is when it was dry, we should say.
21:19Some pretty good action from the beginning of race one.
21:21This is the camera out of the back of Jason Barguana's car
21:24when he got away to a pretty good start and was getting hassled big time
21:27by the four credit twins, Neil Crompton and Glenn Seaton.
21:31Now, this is live pictures coming to you from Calder Park now.
21:34It has been washed out.
21:36These are all the folks heading on home, so never mind.
21:40The race three, it didn't actually happen.
21:42Well, we have the guys inside.
21:44When I say the guys, I'm talking about the top three,
21:47and they're set for the presentation.
21:49And so, too, I'm not quite sure if he's dry, our own Mark Osler.
21:52I'm certainly dry.
21:53In fact, the organisers have taken pity on us
21:55and moved the presentation into the media room,
21:57so we're actually nice and dry here.
21:59One guy I'd be very happy with his performance today
22:01is our top place privateer for the day, Chris Murden.
22:03Well done, Chris.
22:05APPLAUSE
22:07Oh, yeah.
22:08We've got some fans in here.
22:09They always love to see the battlers do well,
22:11and I know you had a pretty tough time at the last round,
22:13but it looks like you've gathered it all up.
22:15Yeah, well, we did a hell of a lot of work after the bingo at Malala
22:18and the guys have worked solidly for the last two weeks.
22:21Gilbert stripped the car and then my guys have rebuilt it all,
22:23and it was just great to get here and do well.
22:25Well, congratulations. Hope to see you in future rounds.
22:27Third place today and a great effort.
22:29This Pertec Falcon's getting faster and faster.
22:31Jason Bright.
22:33APPLAUSE
22:37Were you happy you didn't go out there in the third heat or not?
22:39Oh, it's a little bit disappointing.
22:41We didn't get to put on a race for the fans,
22:43but in these conditions at Calder,
22:45the track is really slippery down the straight,
22:47so it would have been a bit of suicide to go out there in that,
22:49but I would have liked to have gone out there and had a wet race,
22:51but not on this track.
22:53I think the Ford fans will be wondering about this EL2,
22:55this aerodynamic upgrade on the car.
22:57Has it made much of a difference?
22:58I think we've picked up a little bit.
23:00It's a little bit hard to say at the moment, though,
23:02until we get to a little bit quicker track.
23:04We still lacked a little bit in the second race there.
23:06We didn't hang on to the two Commodores in front of us.
23:08By the end of the race, our tyres were looking a bit second-hand,
23:11so we'll just wait and see what happens over the next couple of races.
23:14Congratulations, Jason Bright.
23:16Second place today. It's his first V8 win.
23:18The Shell Series rookie.
23:20Put your hands together for Jason Barguana.
23:22APPLAUSE
23:25Woo!
23:27I don't think I've seen a bloke smile as much today,
23:29but certainly you deserved it. That was a great drive.
23:31Yeah, thanks, man. I've worked hard for it, I tell you.
23:33But it's been a great year,
23:35and to be able to come up here and have a race win today,
23:37especially in front of Craig, it was fantastic,
23:40and the guys on the team are just so excited.
23:42And what about not going out in that third hit? Are you disappointed?
23:45Yeah, I was looking forward to it, actually. I reckon it'd be great.
23:47Especially with him.
23:49Beautiful enthusiasm there. Well done, Jason.
23:51We hope you can repeat that performance in later rounds.
23:53Right now I'd like to call on Ross Brady,
23:55motorsport manager for Shell.
23:57He's making a habit of this.
23:59Our overall winner today, Craig Lowndes.
24:01APPLAUSE
24:07I think you're a bit of a camera hog.
24:09You seemed to like getting up on the presentation all the time.
24:11That car was an absolute rocket.
24:13Well, it was. We made a slight error in the second start,
24:15which made Jason there come through between Mark and I.
24:18And first of all, I couldn't catch Jason.
24:20You know, his car looked good.
24:23Mobile, Holden and Bridgestone obviously work well at this track.
24:26I'm thankful we didn't go out in that last race.
24:29It is a track we use a lot, and in this condition, it'd be madness.
24:34Yeah. Now, Mark's got here at a pretty difficult attack,
24:37trying to get that car off the line.
24:39You two have a different starting technique.
24:41We do. We have a different technique, but it is interesting.
24:44We both use the same amount of throttle technique in that second start,
24:49and we both bogged down.
24:51It would have been nice to have that third race,
24:53and as Jason said, put it on for the fans,
24:55but unfortunately just the weather took control.
24:58Well done, Craig Lowndes, the overall winner today.
25:00Lee Diffie, boy, we've got a big race on our hands
25:02as we head to Northern Territory.
25:04It's going to be fantastic, Mark, isn't it?
25:06We're really looking forward to that.
25:08And what I can't get over is that it's Craig Lowndes.
25:12He's only started 18 rounds in his whole career,
25:16including 1996 and also this year.
25:19He started 18 rounds. He has won today.
25:21It was his 11th win from 18.
25:23That's an unbelievable winning percentage.
25:25Stay with us here on Network 10.
25:26We'll be right back to Calder Park to wrap things up.
25:32Happy birthday, Craig.
25:34Happy birthday to you.
25:37Happy birthday to you.
25:40Happy birthday, dear Craig.
25:43Happy birthday to you.
25:47Hooray! Hooray!
25:49And then you can see Bob Jane in there with Craig Lowndes
25:52blowing out his 24th birthday cake.
25:55And from everyone here at Network 10, we certainly wish the kid,
25:59Craig Lowndes, I guess he's not a kid anymore.
26:02There's some scenes from Calder Park.
26:04Let's have a look at the championship points
26:05because it's quite interesting.
26:06From eight points at the start of the day,
26:08Craig Lowndes has streaked it out to 34 over Russell Ingle.
26:11The only other things to look at there, I guess,
26:13is Jason Bright as well.
26:14Jason truly got sixth now,
26:16and Bargwana is up into ninth position.
26:19Well, it certainly has been a very eventful day here, Barry.
26:22Great to have you on board again,
26:24and you'll be back for Hidden Valley in the Northern Territory.
26:26Well, it's nice to see the young guys going so good, isn't it?
26:28Looking forward to the NT, though.
26:29We certainly are.
