From Gillette Stadium, the Boston Herald's Doug Kyed returns to the show to break down all aspects of Patriots training camp, including the plan for Drake Maye, what to watch for on offense and defense this summer, breakout player picks and much more.

00:00All right, it took a while, but football is back in Foxborough.
00:11So are we.
00:12Boston Herald office, Doug Kide, Andrew Kelly, and together, same shot, Patson and Ferris.
00:16We were recording Tuesday, dried mayo just spoke, David Andrews did as well, Juwan Bentley,
00:20Jonathan Jones, and Jacoby Brissette.
00:23And this isn't a live show.
00:25This is only a live show to everyone who's basically in the media room with us right
00:28now.
00:29If they haven't gone to lunch, this is not live for you on YouTube or wherever you might
00:32be listening.
00:33Thank you for that.
00:34We have a mega Patriots training camp preview.
00:36The reason I say it's a live show is because my voice certainly carries as it tends to
00:40do.
00:41So to everyone listening nearby, I'm going to say, I'm sorry you can't be in here with
00:45us, but I wish I were you being able to listen to this live show because we have a lot to
00:49cover things that were said today, Drake may who could start week one.
00:53And that's not from Doug.
00:54It's not for me.
00:56All of the offense, all the defense, final thoughts, bold predictions, and more.
01:00But let's start with what just happened, what you've already written or you're about to
01:03write, like what struck you most final line about dried mayo press conference today with
01:08first training camp practice coming tomorrow.
01:09Well, during the spring, dried mayo was insistent.
01:12There was no depth chart.
01:13And then he came up to me and said that Jacoby Brissette, as of right now, is the starting
01:17quarterback.
01:18He did obviously leave the door open for Drake may to start week one.
01:22All he said was that he has to outplay him during the, during the summer, it has nothing
01:26to do with the offensive line.
01:27It's nothing to do the wide receivers.
01:28They're not insistent on registering Drake may he can still pass Jacoby Brissette, but
01:33he has to do that.
01:34It's not like they're entering is like one a and one B Jacoby Brissette.
01:37As of this point has a headstart on Drake may based on what they did in the spring.
01:41And I did, I thought that was interesting that he was no longer saying there's no depth
01:46chart.
01:47We'll mix guys in and out.
01:48No, no, no.
01:49He was saying Jacoby Brissette as of right now is our starter.
01:51I agree.
01:52I'm not surprised by it because I think it also got to what he called the word of the
01:56day because he just kept repeating it.
01:57And this was a, I think the best we've seen from Gerard Mayo, not in the sense that he's
02:01being honest or himself, but I think he checked all of the boxes that PR might've advised
02:06him like steer clear of these, you know, third rails, put it this way.
02:10And there was no, as I once wrote kind of OJ that he spilled on himself unnecessarily.
02:14But that point to go back to how I started here, underscored competition.
02:19Like you can't say Drake can't win the job.
02:22If everyone else's job is to prove that you belong, because that removes the possibility
02:26that he is just flat out the best quarterback in camp, which could absolutely happen.
02:30The thing for me that was interesting was him just acknowledging, Hey, the point of
02:34this season is really a fact finding mission.
02:36But the word he used was foundation, right?
02:38Who are the good young players who are the old players that we want to build a foundation
02:41basically for next year and beyond, because I think we all get that.
02:44But it's another thing to voice in a way that he's unafraid of yet.
02:48This is the truth.
02:50Even though players in the locker room want to win every week and we're going to try,
02:54but if we don't, we don't expect to anyway, and that's not what really this season is
02:58about.
02:59Yeah.
03:00And I mean, it's very true.
03:01This team's probably very good there after the schedule came out, they weren't favored
03:05in a single game.
03:06They have a NFL worst four and a half win total over under.
03:11So no one is expecting the Patriots to do well.
03:14And obviously, like you said, the players all want to win.
03:16They want to be as good as possible.
03:17But it is good to come into this with the reality of the situation.
03:22And that's that Patriots were not very good last year.
03:24I think they did make improvements, but I also don't think that they've improved themselves
03:28to be an 11 or 12 win team.
03:30They do still need to see what they are moving forward and who they want to keep rolling
03:34with.
03:35That being said, though, they certainly have extended a lot of guys already heading into
03:38this season.
03:39So it seems like they have a pretty good idea of a lot of the guys that they do want to
03:42work with moving forward.
03:44Right.
03:45Though his extension was not the most notable, and certainly not the longest, was David Andrews,
03:49who we last spoke to.
03:50And it's funny because we got back into this room, again, we've had four press conferences
03:53before he spoke.
03:54Okay, what stuck out to you?
03:56You and I said, not much.
03:59It's not because he wasn't honest with us, or there weren't good questions or good answers.
04:03It's just as far as we're packaging the highlights of the day, David Andrews is probably left
04:06in the cutting room floor.
04:07But there was one thing that he said, because we're asking about his new position coach
04:11Scott Peters, ex-offensive lineman in the NFL, very technical guy, ran a jiu jitsu gym,
04:16and is just very hands on.
04:18But he said, look, athletes have a good BS meter.
04:21And so to me, I think the value in Mayo, speaking some of the hard truths, whether it's, hey,
04:25this place sucked, make it better in a way we all knew Bill did, but also to the media
04:29of like, we have enough awareness of this is where we are, helps players, even if that's
04:33not what you want to hear, they know it's the truth, Vegas knows it's the truth.
04:37The upside for this team is about seven to eight wins, unless you ask Aaron Schatz, who
04:41just continues to shock me with his system projections, which we talked about last week
04:44in this podcast.
04:45But anyway, I think it's a great start, which we're finally getting into football stuff
04:50where we don't have to talk about, you know, Mayo's answer to this or Judon's tweet about
04:54that.
04:55We'll have stuff to evaluate and matter.
04:56So this is kind of the end of the, you know, PR grading, as it were, between the end of
05:02the draft and now.
05:03But so far, if we were still grading, these guys would get an A.
05:07Yeah.
05:08And Gerard did hit on Judon and Gottschalk a little bit with their contract situations.
05:12He did say that he'd like to do anything possible to keep them around this season.
05:17It's pretty obvious that Matthew Judon needs some sort of contract amendment because he's
05:23only set to make like six million dollars in base salary this season, since they borrowed
05:27so much to you in the raise last year.
05:29So in all reality, that would probably come through some sort of signing bonus, contract
05:34guarantee plus incentives.
05:37I think you probably have to get somewhere close to like 13 million overall somehow.
05:41Well, you did this today and like hand up bad teammate.
05:44I've not read the piece yet, but I know we were discussing it and you have good relationships
05:48with people across the league and salary gap and projections.
05:51And like, what does that deal look like if you were the team?
05:54I think that you take most of his salary this season, which, like I said, is like six or
06:01seven million.
06:02Yeah.
06:03Six and a half.
06:04So six and a half million dollars left in base salary guarantee the rest in a signing
06:07bonus.
06:08You probably also throw in maybe another two to three million dollars on top of that in
06:13signing bonus at a void year so that you can spread out the cap a little bit and then also
06:18throw in, let's say, like two to three million dollars in incentives.
06:21I think that really the way that you have to structure this is you have to get back
06:24up to whatever number you had last year, which is like 13 or 14 million.
06:28So that's a lot of ground to make up.
06:29But I do think that there's a way to do it, especially with the way the Patriots are with
06:33the salary cap right now.
06:34They've got a ton of room this year, next year, moving forward here.
06:37So you want Matthew Judon to stick around.
06:40He's in kind of a tough spot as a guy who's 31 to be 32 soon, missed most of last season.
06:45So he can't be demanding 20 million dollars a year or anything like that.
06:48But I think that it's at least fair to get him back up to that 13, 14 million dollar
06:52per year mark.
06:54Devon Godshots, it's tougher to figure out because he's already due over seven million
06:59dollars in base salary this season.
07:02I was finding a hard time finding a great player comp, someone who's around that same
07:07age of like 29 years old, who got a big deal this offseason, DJ Reader with the Lions signed
07:14for two years, 22 million.
07:17He's a nose tackle.
07:18He's around the same age.
07:19That's like a very similar contract to the one that Godshot got as an extension in 2022.
07:23But Reader is also a lot more versatile, whereas like since Devon Godshot, and I don't want
07:28to go too deep in this, but since Devon Godshot joined the Patriots in 2021, he has 41 total
07:33pressures.
07:34DJ Reader had 34 last year alone.
07:36So like, yes, they're similar body types that are both play around the same sort of snaps
07:40or whatever.
07:41But one guy is much more valuable in passing downs than Devon Godshot, Godshot's probably
07:46better on rundowns.
07:47But it's just hard to find that perfect comp, whereas I think in all reality, the best situation
07:52for both parties is like add a million or two in incentives or something, maybe guarantee
07:57this salary, and then just maybe move on after this year, if that's what it comes down to.
08:02But I can't see them giving him a lot of money to stick around or give him a contract extension
08:06that's worth a ton.
08:07I'm with you, because the $7.15 million base salary that he has, the reason it's an issue
08:13for him, despite being the second highest in the team is none of it is guaranteed, right?
08:17So that's the way to say, hey, you'll probably get this money anyway, if you continue to
08:20play 17 games per season, which he has done the last two years.
08:24But there's no incentive for us, given you're standing within the team and within the market,
08:28which is still, I think, between the 20th and 30th high defensive tackle in the league
08:32based on base salary alone, to which he would say, well, that could turn zero if I turn
08:35my ACL tomorrow, is the numbers that you mentioned.
08:39Because say the counter argument to if I'm Devon Godshot's agent, well, you're not going
08:43to measure me in pressures the way you use me up first and second down, like I can play
08:46from the zero technique all the way up to three, maybe four, like not often five, because
08:50no one's on the nose.
08:51But that's not an accurate way to capture my value, to which I would say is the Patriots.
08:55Well, your run stop percentage, meaning the percentage of snaps when the other team is
09:00running the ball, and I'm directly responsible, being Devon Godshot, for a stop is 6.7%, which
09:06is league average for defensive tackles.
09:08So if you want to be a run defense guy, first of all, you're pretty well paid as it is,
09:12and you're not outperforming this contract that we gave you two years ago, granted, we
09:16meaning a different regime than Bill Belichick.
09:17So that's harder.
09:19I think they can play hardball with him.
09:21I don't have an issue with that.
09:22There's not a great replacement, but it's just, hey, you're being compensated properly.
09:26I would just maybe guarantee a little bit more of that or add in some incentives and
09:31that's it.
09:32But Judon Flatley needs a new deal, and there's no debate in that.
09:35Yeah, I mean, Godshot got a good deal two years ago, like that $22 million deal is what
09:43guys are still earning now.
09:45He just already got paid most of it, and I can understand for him being like, I'm only
09:49going to make $7 million this year, and it's like, well, that's because you already made
09:52$13 million last year and the year before.
09:55It all adds up.
09:56So it is a tough situation, but in all reality, I think, I don't know if anything gets done
10:03there.
10:04It's kind of similar to Lawrence Guy's situation last year, where he wanted something, he wanted
10:08some sort of new contract, and it just never came.
10:10Breaking news, we've got a young, exciting underdog team in Boston that's making a run
10:15for the playoffs.
10:16No, it's not the Patriots.
10:17No, not the Patriots yet.
10:19It's the Red Sox.
10:20And if you've been following this season, you know that the Red Sox have been a hotter
10:24ticket ever since the season started.
10:26I want you to get down to Fenway with GameTime, an authorized ticket marketplace in Major

11:31For old defensive tackles to a young quarterback we all want to talk about, actually, hit pause.
11:36For the young receivers, I reported yesterday, Javon Baker had a fracture in his thumb, which
11:39kept him out of minicamp.
11:40Before that, a few OTA practices.
11:42He's cleared.
11:43He's ready to go.
11:44That's Per Gerard Mayo, Marcellus Dial, six-round rookie corner out of South Carolina, also
11:48good to go.
11:49Thumbs up there.
11:50Okay.
11:51Now, Drake May.
11:52Here's the deal.
11:53Every single day, every single practice, every single drill, every single period, every single
11:56rep, eyes are going to be on this kid.
11:58And I'm going to say a lot over the next two weeks in different places, the truth is in
12:02the trends.
12:03The larger sample is basically what that means.
12:06But we're going to analyze everything individually anyway, and put a certain weight on it.
12:11So when you're looking at him over the next four weeks as these trends develop, what do
12:15you ultimately want to see before we get to whether he will start week one, just to show
12:19this is definitive, measurable progress?
12:25I'm probably not answering this the right way.
12:27But honestly, what do I want to see out of Drake May over the next four weeks?
12:30I want him to win the starting job.
12:32First round picks are supposed to start.
12:35Mac Jones started in 2021 is the 15th overall pick.
12:37Like Caleb Williams has no competition right now with the bears.
12:41Obviously he was taken first overall, not third overall, but like, I feel like these
12:45situations in Chicago and Washington feel a lot different than the Drake May situation
12:49in New England where like, no one is saying in Chicago, like whoever their backup even
12:55is, is like, he's the starter right now.
12:57We'll see if Caleb Williams can pass him.
12:59You want your third overall pick to be the week one starter.
13:03So that's what I want to see out of him.
13:04I want to see him beat out Jacoby Brissett and it's not the end of the world if he doesn't
13:08do it.
13:09It doesn't mean that his career is going to tank or anything like that.
13:11And it obviously is a different situation than Mac Jones was entering in 2021 compared
13:16to the one that that Drake May is entering now against Jacoby Brissett.
13:21But in all reality, Jones was the 15th overall pick, May is the third overall pick.
13:25So you would expect May to be in front of where Jones was in 2021.
13:29Cam Newton and Jacoby Brissett aren't perfect comps by any means, but like, they're not
13:34that different, right?
13:35Like Cam Newton in 2021 versus Jacoby Brissett in 2024, like I know that they're far different
13:42in the type of players that they used to be and now are and everything.
13:45But like in all reality, both guys, when you look at them are around like the 25th to 30th
13:50best starting quarterbacks in the league.
13:52So here, here's where I differ.
13:53It's not about the quarterbacks because yeah, Jacoby Brissett's living in the same neighborhood,
13:57if not like next to him in the cul-de-sac.
14:00And when we look at Chicago, the way they've loaded up, not only just with the receivers,
14:04but up front, that's a position you can put a rookie quarterback in and he's insulated
14:08much like Mac Jones three years ago, which we all know and watched.
14:11Jane Daniels in Washington, a better receiving core, a comparable offensive line to this
14:16group, I think.
14:17And then you're going, who's, who's starting over there?
14:19And then who's, who's next to him?
14:21And that to me is the concern because I know Deb McCourty came out with me a couple months
14:25ago and said, Hey, I just visited with Gerard and Matthew Slater.
14:28They want a stable situation before Drake goes in there.
14:31They're not in a rush.
14:32Again, this season is as much a football NFL 17 game, 18 week campaign as it is a fact
14:38finding mission.
14:39They feel like they obviously know enough about Drake May.
14:41That's why he was the number three overall pick, but you don't know about the situation
14:45around him.
14:46And that goes for players, rookies like Caden Wallace and Lane Robinson and Jalen Polk and
14:49Javon Baker.
14:50And if those are the players around him, if they can't do their jobs, catching his passes
14:54and providing him pass protection, I don't want to risk the quarterback of the future.
14:58Now, again, this isn't to say Gerard was lying to us an hour or two ago when he said he could
15:03start, but the situation is so starkly different because we're all going to do this.
15:06Well, Mac started.
15:07Why can't Drake May?
15:08He was picked 12 picks higher.
15:09He's more impressive.
15:10Physically.
15:11He's also being reworked from the ground up with the footwork, the understanding of the
15:14system, the play calls.
15:16And then you get into the reeds, like the complicated stuff he needs to make to answer
15:19my own question, master the simple, boring processes.
15:23So they're automatic.
15:24The footwork is there.
15:26His progression reads and protecting the football because that that was the detractor of you
15:30didn't like Drake May.
15:31We're like, hey, do you want to watch second half of UNC last year when they're down in
15:34games and he's throwing off his back foot and all these ridiculous plays?
15:37You need to iron that bleep out of his game because that cannot become a habit.
15:42And if it is, that'll define the rest of his career.
15:44Yeah.
15:45I mean, like you said, Gerard may have might have been lying to us, but he really he did
15:49say that he's going to be looking at Drake May in a vacuum.
15:51So I thought it's not going to be based on the alliance, just whether he's better than
15:55Jacoby Brissett.
15:56I believe that.
15:57But I think the issue will be or the difference, the catch is the bar is going to be so high.
16:02You know what I mean?
16:03Like he has to blow away Jacoby Brissett, the 25th best quarterback in the league, meaning
16:08you're not 24th.
16:09You're not 23rd.
16:10Drake May looks like an average NFL starting quarterback in this environment.
16:15So again, I'm not I'm not saying Gerard was lying.
16:17I just think it's the bar so high, we're not counting in and reaching there.
16:20And if it is, well, good, because then he's good enough to carry us and maybe paper over
16:25these issues.
16:26And I just think that's unrealistic.
16:27But I could be wrong.
16:28No, I mean, I I just think it's possible.
16:31I just think it's possible that he can come in and start.
16:34And I don't know.
16:35I mean, like, I just think it's an interesting vibe where, like, Jacoby Brissett was signed
16:40to be a bridge starter or veteran backup.
16:42Like, that's why he was signed.
16:44So I guess I just don't understand rallying so much behind Jacoby Brissett and be like,
16:50he's our starter.
16:51Like, I don't know.
16:52I just think that I would almost prefer, I think, to hear like, yep, it's an open competition
16:57rather than hearing like Jacoby Brissett's our starter.
17:00I know it sets expectations that like lowers expectations for Drake May.
17:04And maybe they get out of hand if Gerard Mayo comes in and says, like, it's an open competition.
17:09But I still would just like to hear that it's an even chance between Drake May and
17:14Jacoby Brissett to start week one, based on where they come, based on his upside, based
17:18on where this team is, and probably not going to be good anyway this season.
17:20So two things on this, and then we'll go to I want to hear what you think actually happens.
17:24Best case scenario, worst case scenario, and most likely for Drake May is Jacoby Brissett
17:28is on board with this.
17:29Like, the first question he got was, hey, how does it feel to be one?
17:33Gerard just told us.
17:34He's like, look, that's what you want.
17:36Yeah, feels good.
17:38I know I have to earn this every day.
17:39And he didn't say this in a canned cliche kind of delivery.
17:43That's what you're supposed to say.
17:44He knows it.
17:45He's been around and what happens when guys lose their jobs because he's done that.
17:49And when guys earn jobs, which he's also done around the league.
17:52The second thing I would say is this.
17:55The part that Gerard said is Jacoby Brissett is our starter at this point in time.
18:00And my pitch all along, or not all, more recently has been Jacoby should be the starter.
18:06All first team reps the next two weeks of camp that lead into the preseason opener against
18:10Carolina on August 8th.
18:12That's it.
18:13If Drake pulls into a tie then, or something close, then start to divide the reps.
18:18Because this is also as much about everyone around the quarterback, and we're talking
18:22about offensive line, the new receivers, rookies especially, getting quality reps.
18:25If Drake is there and harried and pressured and doesn't know where to go, that's fine.
18:29That's a rookie quarterback.
18:31But you're losing value for everyone else who is supposed to be growing with him.
18:35Jacoby is there to make sure he knows where to be and what to do.
18:39And if Drake can check those two boxes in two weeks, by all means, here's a couple starting reps.
18:44Right.
18:45And I mean, that's even what we saw back in 2021.
18:47Is that Cam was like the top guy for most of the summer, I think.
18:51And then he got, was it, he didn't get COVID.
18:55He just didn't, there was like some sort of-
18:57He left and went to Atlanta and was not supposed to leave the state or fail to inform somebody
19:02who's leaving the state.
19:03Which is just one of these.
19:04Oh, what a silly mistake by me.
19:05Then Mac Jones took the job.
19:07Yeah.
19:08And then Mac Jones was the guy and he took the job.
19:09So yeah, I don't foresee anything similar to that happening.
19:12But that was a situation where Mac Jones earned the job or seemingly earned the job pretty
19:17late in that process.
19:18It was like late August.
19:19You know what it was?
19:20It was a steady build.
19:21And so that's why I think underscoring like at this point in time, Jacoby's a starter.
19:25We understand that, what he's done.
19:26He's been in the system also, like the system mastery, the playbook and the language is
19:30nothing new for him.
19:31Right.
19:32Like it is most of this offense.
19:33And I think that's where Mac had a good preseason game in all three outings.
19:37Let's just see Drake do that once.
19:39And then kind of carry the conversation up really quickly.
19:41Best case scenario was him winning the job.
19:43Yeah.
19:44Him winning the job and being like a top 15 quarterback.
19:46Okay.
19:47Wow.
19:48Top 15.
19:49I mean, CJ Stroud did it last year.
19:50But okay.
19:51My counter would be the last quarterback to do what CJ Stroud did was Andrew Luck in 2012.
19:56Herbert was pretty good as a rookie too, wasn't he?
19:58I think as far as the winning and driving everything and exceeding expectations, like
20:01Herbert definitely was really good as a rookie and Tony Romo was having Romo-gasms on air
20:06in his debut against the Chiefs, which I remember obviously very vividly.
20:11But I think as far as guys who carried the offense as much as he did.
20:15Yeah.
20:16Like he at least stepped into a great receiving core, decent enough offensive line.
20:19Herbert did.
20:20Herbert did.
20:21Yeah.
20:22Stroud, not as much.
20:23Good offensive line.
20:24I think underrated.
20:25But I think he was...
20:26Yeah.
20:27Receiving core.
20:28I think he made those guys probably better than they...
20:29Yeah.
20:30Yeah.
20:31Yeah.
20:32Yeah.
20:33Yeah.
20:34Yeah.
20:35Yeah.
20:36Yeah.
20:37Yeah.
20:38Yeah.
20:39Yeah.
20:40Yeah.
20:41Yeah.
20:42Yeah.
20:43Yeah.
20:44Yeah.
20:45Yeah.
20:46Yeah.
20:47Yeah.
20:48Yeah.
20:49Yeah.
20:50Yeah.
20:51Yeah.
20:52Yeah.
20:53Yeah.
20:54Yeah.
20:55Yeah.
20:56Yeah.
20:57Yeah.
20:58Yeah.
20:59Yeah.
21:00Yeah.
21:01Yeah.
21:02Yeah.
21:03Yeah.
21:04Yeah.
21:05Yeah.
21:06Yeah.
21:07Yeah.
21:08Yeah.
21:09Yeah.
21:10Yeah.
21:11Yeah.
21:12Yeah.
21:13Yeah.
21:14Yeah.
21:15Yeah.
21:16Yeah.
21:17Yeah.
21:18Yeah.
21:19Yeah.
21:20Yeah.
21:21Yeah.
21:22Yeah.
21:23Yeah.
21:24Yeah.
21:25Yeah.
21:26Yeah.
21:27Yeah.
21:28Yeah.
21:29Yeah.
21:30Yeah.
21:31Yeah.
21:32Yeah.
21:33Yeah.
21:34Yeah.
21:35Yeah.
21:36Yeah.
21:37Yeah.
21:38Yeah.
21:39Yeah.
21:40Yeah.
21:41Yeah.
21:42Yeah.
21:43Yeah.
21:44Yeah.
21:45Yeah.
21:46Yeah.
21:47Yeah.
21:48Yeah.
21:49Yeah.
21:50Yeah.
21:51Yeah.
21:52Yeah.
21:53Yeah.
21:54Yeah.
21:55Yeah.
21:56Yeah.
21:57Yeah.
21:58Yeah.
21:59Yeah.
22:00Yeah.
22:01Yeah.
22:02Yeah.
22:03Yeah.
22:04Yeah.
22:05Yeah.
22:06Yeah.
22:07Yeah.
22:08Yeah.
22:09Yeah.
22:10Yeah.
22:11Yeah.
22:12Yeah.
22:13Yeah.
22:14Yeah.
22:15Yeah.
22:16Yeah.
22:17Yeah.
22:18Yeah.
22:19Yeah.
22:20Yeah.
22:21Yeah.
22:22Yeah.
22:23Yeah.
22:24Yeah.
22:25Yeah.
22:26Yeah.
22:27Yeah.
22:28Yeah.
22:29Yeah.
22:30Yeah.
22:31Yeah.
22:32Yeah.
22:33Yeah.
22:34Yeah.
22:35Yeah.
22:36Yeah.
22:37Yeah.
22:38Yeah.
22:39Yeah.
22:40Yeah.
22:41Yeah.
22:42Yeah.
22:43Yeah.
22:44Yeah.
22:45Yeah.
22:46Yeah.
22:47Yeah.
22:48Yeah.
22:49Yeah.
22:50Yeah.
22:51Yeah.
22:52Yeah.
22:53Yeah.
22:54Yeah.
22:55And it is going to be easier for these guys to pick up and maybe you can actually play the most
23:01Physically gifted guys right away rather than the ones who just know the system best
23:05I it's such a great point and we you and I have talked about that before but I think there's a coherence and identity like
23:11The system itself makes it this is not two years ago
23:15Trying to take a store brand knockoff version of the Rams offense and shoehorn it in with parts of Josh's system
23:20It's not Bill O'Brien going. I've got some Alabama elements, but we can't really block
23:24So now we're gonna go back to basics. Oh now we have to start over and it's week five because we can't do anything
23:28No, this is a we're gonna get really good at outside zone
23:31We're gonna have bootlegs off of that and you're not gonna know if we do this well enough
23:35Which it is until the ball either gets handed off or Drake Mayer Jacoby preset pulls it back and there are more elements
23:40But the standard the the drop back passing game is fairly common West Coast concepts
23:45Even the drills underpinning all of this that Alex van Pelt is gonna run are from like the 70s
23:50Which is not a bad thing it works
23:52They've lived on but there is an identity and how long did we hear and took a drop may well say this
23:56But I think specific to van Pelt like you're not a you're a game plan team in the sense that you game plan every week
24:02Right, but your identity no longer will shift week to week to week
24:07They might bulk up play a little bit more 12 personnel. This is still going to be outside zone play action deep shots
24:13That's what this is
24:15So how committed are they when things look bad to that will interest me because that's the test of your an identity
24:20How committed are you to this?
24:21But that's that's the other part of this is like you'll get to learn faster because we're gonna do the same few things over and
24:27Over again with enough variety to keep you off balance because the Shanahan offenses and this is like old-school Shanahan
24:32we're the ones that used to give Belichick and even the early 2000s the most fits right because there's no real great schematic solution to
24:39Did he hand it off or did he not and if you guessed wrong?
24:43You're in real trouble. Yeah
24:46What are we missing aside from the point you just brought up when we talk about this offense?
24:50Like it's a lot of quarterbacks a lot of young receivers
24:52We just talked about the scheme and the concepts the whole what's missing in the discourse
24:56This might run counter to the next question. Maybe you're pointing the next question, but I
25:01Actually don't think the overall talent on the offensive line. Is that bad? Okay
25:08I don't know where these guys are going to play
25:11Patriots don't know where these guys are going to play but like
25:15Chikungunna the core for was a pretty good right tackle for the last four or five years
25:20Whatever it was with the Steelers Michael went to one of the best guards in the NFL certainly a top
25:26You know above average right tackle in the NFL David Andrews an above-average center in the NFL
25:32City Sal made a lot of progress last season Nick Leverett was a decent player for the box
25:38Like there's a Cole strange former first-round pick came on strong before we got hurt last season
25:44obviously, it seems like he's gonna miss the the first half of the season or the you know beginning part of the season, but
25:50There's enough talent on the offensive line to make this I'd say like an average group
25:56I think that because there's so much uncertainty
25:59It does make the group overall kind of concerning because you don't know where each one of these guys is necessarily going to play
26:05But I mean like can wall a second round pick as well that I didn't mention
26:08Layton Robinson a fourth round pick. So I actually do think the offensive line
26:13Has a decent amount of talent. I don't think I think that is one thing that
26:18Maybe isn't talked about enough I guess or maybe it is something that's missing. But yeah, that would be my my point there
26:25Okay, I'm gonna show that for the next. Yeah, because you can see the rubdown that's right here
26:28No one else can but I'll say very quickly
26:31Based on the limited access we had during OTS and minicamp the starting personnel groups for the offense didn't have
26:39More than two receivers, right? It was a 12 personnel offense meaning you have one running back and two tight end. So Austin Hooper
26:46speaking of like
26:48Backhanded compliments store-brand version like he's basically hunter-henry just in a lesser career path
26:53Fourth team in four years might be a starter here
26:56And so that obviously unlocks some I don't want to say like unpredictability, right?
27:01Like but you know what they're going to run just how are they gonna package us now?
27:04Ideally, you would have a third receiver who's better than Austin Hooper and they say well, we're just gonna play
27:08You know KJ Osborne, whomever it is
27:10But this might be the same as we were talking three years ago with John Smith and hunter-henry again a two tight-ended tag
27:16I think they're gonna figure that out, but we saw that so the next question here is more concerning receivers or offensive line
27:21You clearly think receiver. So let me just go to the offensive line because that's my answer
27:25I will say yeah that I love that. We're having the maybe this is too tight on offense
27:32Conversation for maybe like the sixth time in six like we keep waiting for 2011 to happen again and just never like like
27:40The hunter-henry Johnny Smith thing was so obvious that they're gonna be running a two tight end said in 2021 and then they didn't
27:46It was just like fast. Maybe it is finally this year, but like it wasn't last year with you sick in hunter-henry
27:51It wasn't the giant sir than hunter-henry
27:53Maybe Austin Hooper is the guy but now I just love that. We're carrying that on for another year
27:57So we've made progress because no one said Boston TE party, right?
28:01And no one's made reference to Rob Gronkowski earlier
28:04So I think we've grown up now if we did that would be probably a fireball offense
28:09It's just like shut the pod down everyone stop watching you're listening because obviously it's just not it's not realistic
28:14And I'm not saying again that'll happen. It's just like okay of all the choices they had to start camp
28:18Yeah, that's the way that they want to go Hooper also someone who's been in the offense
28:22You're not as concerned about the offensive line
28:24I can see the talent argument in the upside there that you just laid out
28:28One of my concerns though about this group is that it's led by a guy who I'll just say
28:33I don't know how good Scott Peters is at his job
28:36David Andrews has had a lot of nice things to say about Scott Peters and as a straight shooter
28:41I would tend to trust what David Andrews has to say
28:43But we all have to learn because the Browns did not make a huge effort to retain him or the other assistants that Alex van
28:49Pelt brought with him
28:51In fact hired someone from the outside to replace Bill Callahan and Scott Peters as the offensive line coach
28:56So my concern with not just the offensive line
28:58But the offense as a whole would be there are a lot of new position coaches here
29:02Where as much as you probably upgraded over that hodgepodge staff last year, which we all went down like Vinny sinceri played defense
29:09He's still in his late 20s early 30s
29:10Ross Douglas was a linebacker and defensive back and how he's coaching receivers and where's Troy Brown at?
29:15it's a lot of guys who were either passed over and I just don't trust him in a way that a
29:20Fourth round pick ten years ago played in Robinson comes in. Oh scars gonna take care of that. He'll develop him
29:26He'll be Shaq Mason 2.0
29:27And I think late Robinson could be that as a young player, maybe not as a proven veteran
29:32I just that uncertainty has me a little bit more cautious plus the fact that this if a core forward doesn't work out a left
29:38Two of your five spots are now question marks, right?
29:41To that I would say the Patriots wide receivers coach. This season was a quality control
29:47Washington last season so
29:49There are concerns overall on the offensive coaching staff and I think that Tyler Hughes could wind up doing a great job for the Patriots
29:55But I think that you know, that's that was a higher that I think a lot of people were kind of surprised by
30:01And that it's not the biggest reason why I'm concerned about the wide receivers, but it's among them
30:07I would just say that
30:10They're like Kendrick Bourne coming out the 20 CL. We don't know where he's at right now. KJ Osborne
30:15I think we all expected him to be like this like kind of stabilizing force in the wide receiver group because he was kind of a
30:21500 yard per per year guy with the Vikings
30:23We'll see how he doesn't train a camp, but he never stood out in the spring despite there being
30:29Injuries and absences at wide receiver. He was just a little bit invisible
30:33And and let me pause to add this
30:36That was not just oh the media was there for two or three practices and KJ Osborne had a bad day that sentiment of
30:44Wow, this is this is it
30:48I've heard from within the building and
30:51Who knows how the rest of the summer goes?
30:53But like KJ Osborne the numbers matched up with the player that you saw out there is like well
30:57He's a number three guy and we have a lot of those already
30:59Yeah, and then I mean DeMario Douglas, we all I think everyone has high expectations were to Mario Douglas
31:04But had two concussions last season and that is concerning like you can't just say
31:10All right, DeMario Douglas is gonna be your 17 game starter
31:13It's a lot receiver based on what we saw last season with the injuries beyond that
31:17You've got two rookies both of which I'm high on I like Jalen Polak and Jayvon Baker
31:21But neither one of those guys is a certainty. Do you love Jalen Polak? I do love Jalen Polak
31:25I actually I love Jayvon Baker to those guys
31:28I'm high on but like you can't say that Jalen Polak's gonna get 800 yards this season
31:34You can't see the Jayvon Barker's gonna get 500 yards this season
31:37It's just like it's and then beyond that Taekwon Thornton was bad as a rookie and even worse as a second-year player
31:45Juju Smith Schuster had like less than a hundred yards for most of last season
31:51Keishon booty had a great final minicamp practice, but otherwise caught two passes last season
31:55Despite the fact that everyone was pretty high on him coming into the summer. So
32:00There's just like at least the offensive line has Michael winning at least the offensive line has David Andrews
32:06At least they have guys that like, you know, we're going to be
32:10Solid quality players. Yeah tentpole players like starters and wide receiver
32:14Yes, you could say that about Kendrick Bourne, but he's coming off the tourney CL
32:18Yes, you could say that about tomorrow Douglas, but he had the concussion issues
32:21I just don't I think there's less certainty there and some of those same issues that you're talking about with coaching
32:27Fair, um, I would say you can say Jalen Polk will have 800 yards
32:31If you choose him to be your breakout pick player
32:33And I don't know who you're going to pick for this because this we're gonna end on a positive note with the defense
32:38My breakout player. I'm cheating a little bit. This is more like he's going to rehab his image here
32:42He's going to be better than he was last year
32:44And that's Antonio Gibson and I think for a couple of reasons number one
32:48He's an excellent fit again for outside zone style you go into the deeper PFF numbers
32:52There were a few runners in the entire league last year behind zone blocking then Antonio Gibson
32:57He's a one cut and go type of runner. He's also 230 freaking pounds
33:01So like they're not gonna lose anything between the tackles
33:03You need a tough yard or two when reminder Stevenson just needs a breather
33:07He's also a good pass catcher. And so they might go from a yeah, we're gonna be like a too tight on offense
33:12To maybe we're best in 21, right and both of those guys can catch passes
33:17Both of them can run between the tackles that complimentary or that that overlap
33:20I think will be a strength for them and even when Stevenson inevitably misses a couple of games because he's just a running back in
33:26The 17 game era
33:27Gibson can step up. So what does that look like statistically? I
33:31Don't know but 800 total all-purpose yards, maybe even getting close to a thousand plus a half dozen touchdowns
33:36That's a higher end outcome
33:38But I don't think it's outside the realm of possibility
33:41Minds are boring when I'm gonna say City South
33:43I just I I think that he was good last season and that was despite the fact that
33:48They were putting him at tackle for most of the summer
33:51Despite the fact that he hadn't played it since he was like a freshman or whatever
33:55so I think he's gonna be a
33:58really
33:59quality
34:00starting guard
34:02to start the season and then
34:04They'll still find a way to include him in that starting offensive line one way or the other so I've got
34:09High expectations for City South this season. Okay City South co-signs. I and you know any other pick because he's a second year player
34:15It's coming. It's tough to find. It's tough. You're either all in a Javon Baker. Hello Fitzy, uh, Jalen Polk
34:21He's a second round receiver who's probably going to play
34:24You know, it's almost tough to call a rookie a breakout player. I mean, I took a fifth year break
34:29I mean, I took a fifth year break. I mean, I took a fifth year break
34:31It's almost tough to call a rookie a breakout player. I mean, I took a fifth year veteran
34:36Like DeMario Douglas
34:38How much more is he gonna break out than he already did last season the better way to put this would have been who's going?
34:42to exceed
34:43Consensus expectations, right? And I think both of us delivered on that. Yeah. Yeah. Okay
34:48Defensively. Oh, let's start there. Let's start positive. Sure who is going to exceed consensus expectations?
34:54on the side of the ball, so so
34:57I would go
34:59I'll go alex austin for this one
35:00Okay, cornerback, uh, he was a seventh round pick last season for the bills got waived picked up by the texans waived
35:07And then I thought he played really solid over the last quarter of the season
35:12For the patriots, I think that there's a starting cornerback job. That's up for grabs
35:17Um in the patriots defense and like he very well could grab it. He was playing with the starters during the spring
35:23I know that guys were out. I know marcus jones and jonathan jones were out
35:26But like there's a group of three or four guys or four or five guys that are kind of competing for a starting cornerback role
35:33He's among those and I think that
35:35He's long. He's fast and he's got some playmaking ability
35:39Um, maybe it's that last gift that bill belichick gave the patriots by finding another diamond in the rough at cornerback
35:45Who can be the next jc jackson or jonathan jones or whatever and maybe that's alex austin
35:50But I I know that coaches are high on him
35:53Um, I know that he's impressed people, uh quite a bit and he certainly has the confidence to do it
35:58and we asked jonathan jones about that younger group and he
36:02Said aa for obviously alex austin nothing more and he didn't go on to isaiah bolden or marco wilson
36:09And it's one press conference. It's one line. There's just two letters
36:12Yeah, but to me
36:13You know the first person to come to mind and a question about who's impressing
36:16And he's the only one of that group that you mentioned
36:18Uh, it's good news because again, you'll I think you'll find throughout the course of the season
36:22Guys a little bit more relaxed at the podium a little bit more honest
36:25With the media because they're not as afraid of what's going to happen in the event that they do name names
36:29uh in a way I will say I checked in on this group because I
36:32I think it's deeper than we give it credit for mostly maybe i'm wrong
36:36Um, and I was told look all of them did good things this spring and not in a can cliche
36:40Just keep you at a distance, but it was like all of them could make the team again
36:44Bolden austin marco wilson my pick is going to be marco wilson because I just think we've seen it before
36:49Yeah, two years ago 13 starts at the cardinals three interceptions, uh force fumble a dozen pass deflections
36:55And that was a bad cardinals defense, but he was a fourth round pick of florida
36:59The traits are still there six foot 190 pounds or so
37:02I think this is gonna be a really good group and ideally one of them does emerge not just because you get a good cost
37:06Controlled young player, but it allows jonathan jones then on the wrong side of 30 to be ultimate secondary utility man
37:13You need an outside corner one week. You need him to play nickel. Oh, he can play free safety
37:18And he said today he'll do whatever that can only happen though
37:21If christian gonzalez and marcus jones stay healthy, which you know, they're back. They're 100 great news
37:25Who knows what will happen this season?
37:27but I think that's the best value for jonathan jones is to be that utility guy if
37:31If if one of these young corners step up and hopefully they will um, all right
37:36I would assume
37:37That a bunch of guys who also could just get cut alex austin
37:40Isaiah bolden and marco wilson are not the most interesting thing to you personally about this defense
37:44So not the best but just something that you're gonna be locked in on tomorrow and all the practices thereafter
37:49uh, I mean for me, it's what a defense with plays not called by steve belichick looks like because
37:56It's just a I mean, I think that everyone just assumes
38:00Myself included for the most part that all right. All the same players are back. This defense is gonna be top 10 again
38:06uh, it's gonna be
38:08The strength of the team you don't have to worry about the defense
38:11But in all reality bill belichick is gone who was like the ultimate defensive coordinator for the patriots
38:18No, steve belichick is gone. He was their defensive playmate a play caller
38:22I know that gerard mayor was heavily involved in doing other coordinator duties
38:25Obviously he's now a head coach a lot of confidence demarcus covington around the building. Everyone likes him
38:30But we just haven't seen gerard mayor or demarcus covington cole plays in regular season game
38:35And I just want to see how different it looks. Maybe it's better. Maybe they are more aggressive
38:40Maybe they can get after the quarterback better. Uh, maybe they can make more plays and all those things, but there is something just so
38:46Consistent about what the patriots did year after year after year after year
38:50um on defense with bill belichick and steve belichick so heavily involved that you could kind of count on them as being
38:57at least
38:58above average
39:00I think that's still the case
39:02But it's just different and I want to see how these changes
39:07Look on the field and how different things really are now that demarcus covington could be calling plays
39:12And rodney was that guy who's kind of overseeing everything?
39:15so
39:16I'm with you. I'm just a little off-center from this not in a play-calling sense, but i'm i'm curious structurally
39:22If again, these guys have now been given the keys to bill belichick's defense
39:26That's what it is the system that they're running
39:28And they're going to abide by all the principles and the techniques and the drills underpinning this whole system
39:32This worked very very well
39:34And they don't know much else beyond this
39:36But might they just play a little more four down defense
39:39But you and I have talked about off off air on this podcast before and something christian barmore brought up in the spring
39:44I was like, huh?
39:46That's interesting and it's not that the patriots haven't played four down before but that kind of single gap
39:50And they're more of a hybrid defense. They'll single gap over here. You'll two gap over there
39:54Depending on your personnel available and the opponent etc, etc
39:57That to me is okay
39:59If they were allowed to design the game plan from start to finish because bill and steve are not here
40:03What does this look like because to stick with the four down example
40:06And maybe it's just playing a lot more dime where you have um, you know, the safeties are no longer at the second level
40:11Whatever it might be
40:12matt judan
40:14christian barmore daniel akwale or devon godshow and then pick keon white or diedrich wise on the opposite end
40:21That's a front. I don't want to mess with if i'm an opposing offense. So
40:25What are the tweaks the styles because the roster is the same you're bringing it back
40:28I think the principles will be there but because of the experience, uh the experience together
40:33And it's just such a veteran laden group
40:35All schematic possibilities are on the table
40:37So how deep into the bag do they reach and when they come out?
40:40Are they finding different things that you know, obviously bill could do whatever he wanted
40:44Um, but are they starkly different from what we saw or are they just running it back in virtually every sense?
40:50Yeah, I think that yeah, it is gonna be interesting to see how much more aggressive they are
40:54How much different it looks and yeah, I think that they've got a lot of talent. It's just about putting it all together. Okay
40:59Uh, we are
41:01Going to we have two more on the defense and we'll get out of here with the final thaw in training camp
41:04Which again starts wednesday tomorrow 11 a.m. Practice same thursday and friday
41:09There's a big assumption even aaron shot said this will be the third best defense in the league, right?
41:13They're going to be back to a top hat level and it's because matt judon's back and christian. Gonzalez is too
41:17I don't think that's enough aside from just good health
41:20What else do they need to do or achieve or show you this summer to say? Okay. I'm i'm fully on board
41:26Um
41:28Or maybe it's nothing
41:30I think that you need
41:33either josh uche to return to his 2022 level
41:38or kian white to take a big step forward this season because
41:42We all expected josh uche to still be a double digit sack guy last year and he just simply wasn't I know he was asked
41:47To do some different things
41:49But like once judan went out, it's not like josh uche started playing like 60 percent of snaps
41:54He was still that kind of password specialist and just wasn't able to get after the quarterback as much
41:58I think a big part of that was judan not being on the field. Um, and then kian white
42:02Was great last summer. We saw dominant traits from him and then he disappeared a little bit during the regular season. So
42:09I know it's it sounds really simple to say like you just need one of those guys
42:13But you do because it can't just be matthew judon getting after the quarterback
42:17You need someone else to be that, you know near double digit sack guy or that heavy pressure guy
42:23uh to really work off of
42:25Matthew judan. I don't think that there's a guarantee that one of those guys is gonna be that
42:29So because again, this is a veteran laden defense assuming good health and that's what you just have to do in july
42:33This isn't to say that will hold true
42:35You know the the pieces that I think you would point to what else do you need to say the positions of the players have?
42:40To be those who are less proven right that you don't know what else is going to what's going to come from them
42:45And you hit on one of them kian white is a huge piece to me because that is potentially a three down player
42:50Holding the edge down on first and second down against the run
42:52Kicking inside potentially an interior rusher on third down and mayo had some nice things to say about kian white
42:58We'll see he's an older player. So physically there's less to tap into there. Uh, but from a skill development standpoint
43:03Yeah, it could make a year to leap. The other player to me is marty mapu because
43:08Duggar and jabril peppers highly athletic rangy good safeties still better at the second level are not
43:15Really backpedal type of players, right?
43:17You're not trusting them in isolation in man-to-man coverage or really as a single deep safety all of them
43:21As I said last week can rotate enough that no one really gets burned because you can't pick on them
43:25But you're not trusting any of them to hold it down
43:27Mapu is in a similar mold
43:29Uh, and if it's not going to be him
43:31You're asking jalen hawkins x charger and falcon last year to hold down that back end or play in that role
43:36I just want to see what that year to leap looks like from him because is he making it as a linebacker hybrid safety?
43:42Can he play back deep?
43:43Um, he got roasted in quarters coverage down in miami losing a touchdown to tyree kill not exactly a cardinal sin
43:49it happens to basically everyone in the nfl playing defense, but
43:52I don't know what that looks like because I don't think they've clearly defined who that player will be. I have high hopes
43:57He's incredibly instinctive. Um
43:59But I think they need more from him as opposed to just you know
44:03Oh, we'll still see you tinker around like you need a third safety if you're going to be a three safety base defense
44:09I as part of our preview we had a
44:12Surprise cut candidate
44:14and I did not I did not pick my
44:17but if someone was gonna say like
44:20an absolutely insane
44:22Out of your mind surprise cut candidate
44:24Like it might be the guy that bill belichick took in the third round last season
44:29Who's an older prospect and wanted all draft process and that was it?
44:32Like when they were preparing in the draft I can tell you that it was just he's bill's guy
44:36We'll see who doesn't have an obvious position on defense
44:40Is an older prospect small school guy
44:43that the patriots
44:45Wanted to trade down from that spot
44:48Couldn't find a keep couldn't find a taker and then why i'm taking marty mapu like
44:52I don't think I I think marty mapu is going to be on the team
44:56I think that he could still be a very good player as long as he's playing near the line of scrimmage either as a linebacker
45:02Or as a safety he's highly intelligent. I think he'd be a great leader on the team
45:07There's a distinct possibility in two years
45:08He's like one of the best players on the team
45:10but like if you were looking at someone who was a bill belichick draft pick
45:15That maybe the rest of the team is like, I don't know
45:17Like he would be the he would be the guy from last year's draft
45:20once again
45:21Don't think it's gonna happen
45:22But I I just I had the thought
45:24While I was putting together the preview and just figured that would spit it out on the podcast as well. Okay, good. Yeah, uh
45:30Last thing about the defense what if any positions concern you because I think
45:34I I believe they'll get to be top five here again. I think you're on board with that
45:37Yeah, they were 32nd worse in the league in adjusted games loss last year
45:41So from a health standpoint, it probably should not get any worse than it was a year ago
45:45And they were still in the neighborhood of top 10
45:47But if something is going to pop up in a way that goes, oh, you'd love to have an extra player here
45:53What position is it?
45:54So I I hate to have like kind of a cop-out answer about this
45:58But it's either none or kind of all of them
46:01Whereas like like in all in all reality, there's nothing that i'm like overly concerned about defense
46:07But I think that you can pick apart almost every single position group at cornerback
46:10you really only have christian gonzalez and jonathan jones is like
46:14Definitive starting caliber players marcus jones. Maybe he's a slot. Maybe he's a really short outside cornerback
46:20The patriots have never really fully defined his role
46:22He would be the favorite to be that third cornerback, but I just don't have the most confidence of that at safety
46:27I love jabril pevers and kyle duggar. I think they're both great safeties. But as you mentioned, there's not that
46:33Prototypical free safety. We still don't really know what marty mapu was at linebacker
46:38Juwan bentley jelani devay and sion sion. Taki. Taki, you know exactly what they are
46:43But none of those guys is like a top 10 linebacker in the nfl and then a defensive tackle
46:48They replaced laurence guy with armand watts. I think that is a little bit of a downgrade
46:54Like
46:54We'll see how it all works out. But laurence guy was very dependable. You knew what you were getting out of him
46:59I can understand why they cut him for the money armand watts is a cheaper player. It's just
47:04I don't know exactly what that one-for-one replacement looks like
47:07I think the one i'm the least concerned about is edge defender
47:09If I do have to answer I would probably say cornerback even though I do like a lot of those young players
47:13I would just love to know who is absolutely going to be that third starter
47:17so I would say
47:20Um
47:22I think that's fair. My answer would be none as well like at that point
47:25And it's not because i'm suddenly wowed by juwan bentley jelani to buy and see i'm talking talking who are gonna knock you out
47:30But like they again, it's solid right? It's solid. They they can take care of their business certain assignments
47:35There edge defender though has me a little bit more curious because if matt judan gets hurt again
47:41I think you're basically in the same predicament, right?
47:43They were a year ago, which again we're not just banking on him getting hurt
47:46But also
47:47The opposite would be if keon white does take this year to leave or maybe he doesn't because he was a player
47:51Drafted in the second round for a reason and I don't think of him an opponent Dietrich wise who you know
47:57Is a good nfl player good youthful player scares me
48:00Josh, uj clearly when you can turn some attention to him doesn't scare anyone. Anthony. Jennings excellent run stopper first and second down
48:07That's not winning football games in the modern era
48:10So it's still a lot on judan where I think it's fair
48:13Obviously you need to bank on young players and developing them and they've got good coaches in that area
48:18but it's just
48:19you know, I I would
48:21I'm, not banking on that in a way that I feel like
48:24Someone's going to emerge a corner. Um, or you will have the linebackers will do enough
48:29It's not it's not a concern
48:30But I think it's just something we might be taking a little bit for granted
48:33I I my counter argument to that would just be like
48:36If judan gets hurt then they're in the exact same situation
48:39They were last year and they were still a top 10 defense with those edge defenders in place at cornerback
48:43I know patriots fans are gonna lose their minds about this. But like they did lose defensive backs. They lost miles bryant
48:48They lost jaylen mills. They lost the first one phillips, but I mean like miles bryant was a starving cornerback
48:54You and I are both behind
48:56And the miles bryant and like that's obviously what patriots fans are going to lose their mind about but like he was a very solid
49:01Slot cornerback that you could plug in at either slot or safety or whatever
49:06And now you're banking on that being marcus jones who didn't stay healthy last year and hasn't found a definitive role
49:13at on defense
49:15Even last year to start the season like miles bryant was starting over him. So
49:20clearly bill belichick and c belichick
49:23uh liked what miles bryant had to offer over marcus jones, but uh, yeah, that would be my counter argument there just that there's
49:29There's maybe less depth this season at safety and cornerback than there was last season. Yeah, definitely
49:35I mean, we're a couple years away from belichick
49:38Confidently and comfortably announcing safety is the strength of the team. Yeah, granted. It was chris berman who asked the question
49:44so it's very different than duggar i back in the day asking about question, but
49:47Um, yeah safety depth is a little quieter there. It's just like the top two in the depth chart
49:50I think across the board solid. Yeah, but as we know injuries hit in a variety of different ways
49:56All right final thought on training camp stuff
49:57We've talked about you want to hammer home again something that we did not hit on it could be superfluous. It could be
50:02Uh, i've said days that people should come down to again
50:05July 31st august 2nd 3rd the joint practice with the eagles and the 13th like padded practices come on down
50:12What's everyone? Uh, I want to see the reigns taking off the rookie wide receivers and we didn't really see that fully
50:17During the spring. I think that was a lot of like these are rookies
50:20We're not going to thrust them into action right away. Now's the time to do it because you need
50:24Quality wide receivers out there and they have the highest upside on the team
50:27So I would like to see jaylen polk jaylen baker getting a ton of reps with the ones
50:31To see fully what they can do. Yeah, uh co-sign on that. I would just say come see it for yourself
50:36Like I I say this as someone who drove up from connecticut as a kid 80 minutes to like go to a practice
50:40once or twice a summer because
50:42The access is nothing like you would have in a game, but there's not as much distance
50:45you can hear the players you can see the pads and when you
50:48Go and watch and then read what we write you can be like, oh well
50:51You missed this because you feel like you had a different view. Um, you know, or whatever it might be. There's just
50:56universal hope joy
50:58Even going back and reading the stuff that we had done last year to kind of prepare for this where we could do better
51:02And what do we want to do for our training camp coverage?
51:05There was a lot of the offensive line falls apart. They're in trouble again
51:08Spoiler it did but there was still a sense of this could be a much better team
51:12And I don't think the patriots are going to be outside of six wins this season
51:15Uh, but if there's a time to feel that not only just in your heart, but on the field and see it
51:20Training camp is it so come on down. It's free. And uh, I don't know
51:24That's my pitch for patriots.com if they wanted to spice this up and run it
51:27On theirs. All right. He's doug kyd. He's got to go. I've got to do the same. That's it from box, bro
51:32It's tuesday training camp kicks off tomorrow again every practice at 11 a.m
51:35Patriots will be off on saturday, uh, and then they will be back sunday monday and tuesday with three more practices
51:40You will hear from me around then for what we've learned so far at training camp again
51:45Every single day every single period every single practice so long
51:49Bye
52:03You
