00:00It certainly is a highlight of the weekend and it will be a highlight of this year's
00:05FAI 1000 Classic.
00:06The FAI number 18 Shell Helix Ford of John Bower to drive in the top 10.
00:12And unfortunately for his team mate Dick Johnson, a very sad weekend in the fact that this is
00:16the first time ever Dick Johnson will not compete in the top 10.
00:21An exciting moment for John Bower.
00:24Concentration on the face of John Bower, the 43 year old Tasmanian, long time driver with
00:29the Shell.
00:30Dick Johnson's racing team shifts it back as he swings up the top of the mountain.
00:35One hot lap, no mistakes allowed here.
00:37The team, these Shell Fords struggling for straight line speed.
00:41They really have been battling against the clock all week, working very, very hard to
00:45try and improve that problem.
00:46But John Bower really behind him.
00:48With the Shell Helix team, of course, it is the same as the Tickfoot 500 at Sandown.
00:5324 year old youngster Cameron McConville, a very talented driver in the number 18 Shell
00:58Helix Ford.
00:59And of course, Dick, we look forward to that tomorrow.
01:01Meanwhile, Bower is trying desperately to make up the lost time.
01:04He was considerably slower than our provisional pole sitter Glenn Seat.
01:08And the Shell Helix Ford is somewhat down on straight line speed.
01:12And it's mystifying the team somewhat.
01:15Bower brings it down toward Forest Silbo, first man on the track.
01:18And as they come out, they clean the track somewhat as he opens it up, up to sixth gear,
01:24onto Conrods.
01:25They build up to speeds approaching 300 kilometres an hour.
01:28Flashes just step across the white line there.
01:31Using braking for 300 kilometres an hour.
01:33Rocked very, very hard on the brakes.
01:35John Bower hard at work.
01:37Well, last year in the last qualifying session, that was seventh.
01:41Dick Johnson got this team, or the team it was last year, up to fifth.
01:45Let's see how John Bower goes.
01:47He will set the pace for the rest of the line.
01:49The first car to do it, a 2.12.39.
01:532.12.39.
01:55Yeah, it's obviously the best the car's been so far.
01:58It's a little nervy in the back.
02:00I'm actually quite pleased with it because we're really struggling.
02:03It's what wins.
02:04Well, by tomorrow, we'll be able to actually give them a bit of a shake.
02:08Sunday that matters.
02:09Thanks, mate.
02:10Here he is, 1997.
02:13That enormous reception is very popular at the top of the mountain, Larry Perkins.
02:16And here he comes onto Fitzstraight to head out on his...
02:19...in their new VT.
02:20This isn't the 500, nor is it the one that Russell Ingle drove.
02:23And they're also similar to Bower on the Shell Helix team,
02:26struggling with straight-line speed and was very frustrated yesterday afternoon.
02:30And likewise, mystified, had no idea why they were slow.
02:34But a good sign with Bower being 1.2 seconds quicker.
02:37Let's hope Larry can do the same.
02:39Perkins up the mountain, up toward the cutting.
02:4248-year-old, they called him the Cow Angie Kid
02:44when he first emerged from the valley scrub of Victoria.
02:48And he was a very talented youngster.
02:49He knows from wheelers, went overseas,
02:51and later Formula 1 before returning to Australia
02:53and establishing a very strong career in touring cars.
02:55And boy, aren't these guys dominant at Mount Panorama.
02:58Three times the winner from the five V8 supercar baths we've had.
03:02Very, very dominant form, and that's him to get stronger every year.
03:05Nice, tidy, fast lap.
03:06Telemetry on screen.
03:09Revs, speed, gears, and brake allocation.
03:12Letting you know how Larry Perkins operates this Castrol VT Commodore
03:16around the 6.2 kilometers of the Mount Panorama circuit.
03:19Bowers at 2.1239, 2.1239.
03:23Larry's time yesterday was some improving to do.
03:25He wants to better Bowers.
03:27Conrod straight.
03:29He's about four-tenths of circuit,
03:31so he's going quicker than the Shell Ford so far.
03:33Let's see if he can carry that speed all the way down Conrod
03:35and put in a quicker lap than John Bower.
03:382.1239 for the Shell Ford.
03:39As he swings across the front line down the couch,
03:41cars stand right on their nose.
03:43Very, very hard braking
03:45as he brings it back to what a little bit sideways coming out of there.
03:48Perkins is pushing very, very hard.
03:50Down on this VT Commodore.
03:52The last corner.
03:53This is the last chance.
03:55Swing wide up onto the ripple strip across the line.
03:572.1239 the 2.2.
03:59Goodness me.
04:00He really lost it that second part of the track, didn't he?
04:03Nice donut, Larry.
04:05That was probably the best part of it
04:07because the time wasn't that flat flash.
04:10Well, it's a little bit quicker.
04:11Yeah, I know we were struggling a bit,
04:13but I was absolutely flat out then,
04:15and that's all I could wring out of it.
04:17Looks like you're trying.
04:19Couldn't get the time.
04:20All right, thanks a lot, Larry.
04:22For the third year in succession,
04:25John Faulkner is a part of the top ten shootout.
04:28He's pretty pleased about that also.
04:31Team this year with 19-year-old Todd Kelly,
04:35part of the Holden Young Lions.
04:37If you like, lent him.
04:39Very happy with the youngsters' progress.
04:41But the boss behind the wheel at the moment.
04:43Well, it's been a real battle of survival
04:45for the Better Electrical, Fisher & Paykel team.
04:48Caught up in a terrible accident
04:50on the streets of the Gold Coast.
04:52Some will try and borrow a shell from Holden Racing Team,
04:56but miraculously, they managed to finish the...
04:58to fix this damaged shell before the race.
05:01Let's hope they can get through this without a scratch.
05:04But a lot of damage to this car.
05:06I'm going to try and...
05:08I'm going to try and take this.
05:23It's a great drive.
05:25So...
05:36It's a great drive.
05:37It's a great drive.
05:38It's a great drive.
05:39It's a great drive.
05:40It's a great drive.
05:41It's a great drive.
05:42It's a great drive.
05:43It's a great drive.
05:44It's a great drive.
05:45A lot of pace down Conrad.
05:46Hit the Robb Benscups some times.
05:48Larry Perkins was quicker than Bauer,
05:50the same section of the circuit last time around,
05:52but lost it in the second half.
05:53Let's see if Faulkner can do the reverse.
05:55Well, through the last part of the Caltex chase.
05:582.12.39.
05:59Keep that time in mind.
06:01Down into Murray's corner for the final time.
06:03This is it.
06:04The run to the line.
06:05Faulkner doing sideways out of that one.
06:07Across the line.
06:082.12.
06:09He's done it.
06:102.12.25.
06:11John Faulkner, the quickest so far.
06:17That was a good one, John.
06:19Over a second quicker than you were in practice yesterday.
06:22Yeah, it felt like it.
06:23It's actually the fastest lap we've done all week,
06:25but it's a bit of an outlook just too neat.
06:27Everyone said, you're not near the wall,
06:29so had a bit of a go.
06:31A couple of mistakes.
06:32It wasn't a perfect lap, but glad to be up the front.
06:34We've got cookies so far.
06:40Three cars are out now in the top ten shootout
06:42as the roulettes do their thing over the mountain.
06:44The Holden race score tells us that John Faulkner is quickest
06:47at the moment at 2.12.25.
06:49John Bowen, Cameron McConville and the Falcon,
06:51second so far.
06:53And BT at 2.13.02.
06:56This is the FAI 1000.
06:59FAI 1000 Classic at Bathurst.
07:01You'll remember last year, of course,
07:03the race itself was a race of attrition.
07:05It really was a case of drive to survive.
07:07And one of those claimed by the mountain was Wayne Gardner.
07:10Well, why Coca-Cola Commodore?
07:1387 world 500cc motorcycle champion
07:16making his return to Mount Panorama
07:18in the Coca-Cola Donut King Commodore
07:20sets out on his hot lap.
07:22Remember last year?
07:23Toward the end of that hot lap, he just glanced...
07:25Of course, Cromden now with Glenn Seaton
07:28has paired up with Tasmanian Paul Stokel.
07:32...last year, but he's with the chief this time round.
07:34Gardner himself was surprised to be in the top ten shootout,
07:37but he's going to give it his best shot right now.
07:39Tell you what, it's not a bad package too.
07:41Wayne Gardner Racing, one of the former mechanics
07:44that worked in Wayne Gardner Racing.
07:46The old days, Russell Levy, team manager.
07:48All of his old boy, very strong, very understated effort.
07:51A low profile.
07:52Look at the equipment.
07:53This car's got good Yokohama tyres,
07:55Robinson Chevy engines.
07:57He's running quick in the top ten,
07:59so this car configuration is the race continues tomorrow.
08:03But he's been good.
08:04He's pushing it hard across the top two.
08:06Having his baby boy, he and his partner, Tony,
08:09recently became parents with young Remy.
08:12His outlook, he's just having some good...
08:19Well, he's second fastest across the top of the mountain.
08:21We're just checking the splits as they go across the top.
08:23He's the...
08:24Has always had plenty of speed.
08:25He and Neil Cromden were in fact leading last year's run.
08:28The engine blew.
08:30Wayne slid on his own oil.
08:32Top of the mountain, actually, near Forest Elbow,
08:35got clouded by Mark Larkin.
08:37And that goes here.
08:38A 2.12, 2.5...
08:39Doesn't run wide this year.
08:40And it's his quickest form now.
08:44Wayne, third quickest.
08:46Yeah, not too bad.
08:48I made a couple of little small mistakes,
08:49locked the wheel up over the top.
08:51But I had the indicator going and the light was rebugging me,
08:54so I was trying to get it off as I was driving.
08:56But, look, I'm pretty happy.
08:58I'm looking forward to the race.
09:00Let's hope it stays in one piece this year.
09:01Absolutely.
09:02I just want it to finish first,
09:03and then hopefully it'll bring a result from there.
09:05Best of luck.
09:06Thanks, Barry.
09:0726-year-old Jason Barguana behind his Commodore
09:10will pair up this year with Jim Richards.
09:13And if we turn the clock back 12 months ago,
09:15of course, we all know so well that this race
09:18was an absolute disaster for Barguana
09:20when he was part of the Holden Young Lions team,
09:24crunched the car on the warm-up lap of the race
09:26at Forest Elbow.
09:28The car didn't even make the start line.
09:30This guy has matured.
09:31He has learned.
09:32He has had a great season,
09:33finishing seventh in the Shell Australian Touring Car Championship
09:36and is red-hot at the moment.
09:38Well, keep in mind, too,
09:39he blew the opposition away in Friday's official qualifying,
09:42taking provisional pole position in that Holden Young Lions car.
09:45There's no doubt about this kid's speed.
09:47He really did surprise a lot of people last year
09:49after that crash here at the warm-up
09:51before his career was over,
09:52certainly with Holden.
09:53He gave the youngster another shot,
09:55and he really has done his team boss proud this year.
09:57Big Murphy car,
09:59so there's no...
10:00Pushing it hard across the top.
10:012.12.25 is still the time to beat from Faulkner.
10:05He had to wipe his brow yesterday
10:06by Kieran Brewer and the Castrol Commodore.
10:08He's just able to avoid it
10:09without putting a scratch on the ground.
10:10The weak in the lock break there.
10:12You can see him pushing it hard
10:13as he drops it down into the VV Dipper
10:16and down toward Forest Elbow.
10:19Nice tidy lap so far from Jason Barguana
10:21as we go on board
10:22with the 26-year-old youngster having seatbelts.
10:25There's been a lot of comments about that.
10:27Brings it on to Conrod straight.
10:28Fires the Valvoline.
10:29Cummins Holden down Conrod.
10:33And a very quick time to the top of the hill too.
10:36I think he's the fastest man so far in the split.
10:39If he can carry this speed down,
10:40he may be looking good for pole position.
10:42Well, the car's got plenty of straight line speed
10:45down into Caltech.
10:46Chase locks it up a little bit.
10:47A little bit of smoke from the Valvoline.
10:49Cummins, Commodore, he drifts wide.
10:51Has to bring it back in line.
10:53Barguana, this is his run to the line
10:55because we've got an interesting story to tell.
10:57Coming to the finish line now.
10:582.12, 2.5 is the time.
11:00And he doesn't quite do it.
11:05Fourth quickest.
11:07Yeah.
11:08What a buzz.
11:09Look, I'm having a ball up here.
11:10I mean, the car's working all day.
11:12We'll give it heaps.
11:13At the end of Conrod straight,
11:14through to Chase.
11:15Did you lock her up on the back end
11:17coming into the last section?
11:18Yeah.
11:19Locked the front brake and sort of pull it up.
11:21Obviously cost me a bit of time,
11:22but what the heck.
11:23Tomorrow's a long day.
11:25Jimmy's obviously good in the car.
11:27Yeah, looking forward to it.
11:28Best of luck, Chase.
11:29Thanks, Baz.
11:30Of course, the second moment.
11:31Mark Noski, they did qualify for the top ten.
11:34Unfortunately, a crash prevented them.
11:36Murph now.
11:37Murph, you pulled out the top ten shirt out of the car.
11:39Not right.
11:40No, it's not right.
11:41I mean, the guys worked all night.
11:43It just doesn't feel left a fair bit,
11:45and we also didn't realize
11:47because the guys had their heads under the car all night.
11:49The seat's actually broken,
11:50and it's about six or seven inches to one side.
11:53It's got a big crack in it,
11:54so rather than risk it and do something silly,
11:56we thought we'd better just flag it and start tenth.
12:00No, I mean, you know,
12:01the way yesterday, you know, our preparation
12:03up until the race meeting was good,
12:05but we are struggling,
12:07so I think the car still wasn't quite set up right yesterday.
12:10He's really put a big damper on things,
12:12so, yeah, it's not quite good.
12:13Not good enough.
12:14You know, right?
12:15Well, anything's possible.
12:16Yeah, you know, it doesn't matter.
12:18We start tenth.
12:19You know, that's what we decided.
12:20You know, we don't need to be on pole,
12:21but hopefully the car is feeling sharp,
12:23but otherwise it's not looking too good.
12:25A man on a mission.
12:27Mark Larkin, the 34-year-old,
12:29born and raised in Sydney,
12:30now lives up on the Gold Coast,
12:32very close to Stone Brothers Racing,
12:34who prepared this Mitre 10 Falcon in 1998,
12:37looking very competitive throughout the Shell Series,
12:39absolutely cleaned up on the streets of Surfers Paradise
12:41a few weeks back.
12:43This man is looking very good.
12:45He is riding a very big confidence wave at the moment.
12:48He's extremely pumped up,
12:50extremely enthusiastic,
12:52and he is really looking forward to this.
12:54His first ever V8 Super
12:56repeated it the next day on race day on Sunday,
12:59and he said now that he and his new teammate Brad Jones
13:03can come here as genuine...
13:05...and massage these cars into competitive form
13:07very, very strong on shock absorber development.
13:09They've had Bridgestone tyres, which have been there,
13:11trying to find...
13:13...straighten up this course as much as possible...
13:15...down in here, what a narrow entry
13:17toward McPhillamy Park.
13:19Mark Larkin looking very tidy so far
13:21in the Ford V8 engines
13:23of the Stone Brothers Racing team,
13:25and they're looking quite formidable in 1998.
13:28There are only four cars,
13:30and of course they were the top four cars yesterday
13:32to get into the 2.11 bracket.
13:34Plenty of air there
13:35underneath the Minor 10 Falcon.
13:37Larkin, who you might say that sounds a little slow,
13:39keep in mind, escaped it at 2.10.
13:41Sambos, yes, times were a little slower than usual yesterday,
13:45but today it should be a bit quicker.
13:47Nice sunny day, it was a little overcast yesterday.
13:50We'll see how Larkin shapes up.
13:51I'll tell you what, this car's been horse speed
13:53all the way down the hill.
13:54This is going to look very good for Mark Larkin,
13:56braking hard for Caltech's chase.
13:57He fast-lapped.
13:58The Ford fans will be screaming
14:00if he can bring this one home.
14:01Well, that's where Barguana lost it.
14:03This could be where Larkin wins it.
14:062.12, 2.5 is still the time that stands.
14:09Larkin is going to nail it at 2.11.
14:11No, at 2.10.9.
14:132.10.9 for Larkin.
14:18That's a good one, Marco.
14:19Quickest 2.10.9, a full second quicker than yesterday.
14:22Yeah, so far so good, mate.
14:23It wasn't a bad lap, I've got to say.
14:25Look, I'm just happy to be here, mate, I really am.
14:27It looked great, it looked so smooth.
14:29Yeah, we've got a good pack.
14:30He continues tomorrow, but I'm pretty happy about that.
14:32Fingers crossed.
14:33Thanks, mate.
14:34...Indy, and he thrashed that Mitre 10 Falcon
14:37around the mountain to go under 2.11.
14:39Faulkner and Kelley now second quickest,
14:41Bauer-McConville third in the Falcon,
14:43and also Jason Barguana.
14:45Isn't it great to see him back at Mount Panorama?
14:48Perkins and Ingle currently sixth.
14:50We've got the lap right after this break.
14:56Welcome back to Network 10's exclusive coverage
14:59of the FAI 1000 Classic
15:01and a reminder of our Holden Banner Competition.
15:03The winner of the best banner
15:05will take home a Commodore SS V8
15:07valued at around $45,000.
15:10The You at Home tomorrow banners
15:12will give you five numbers to dial.
15:14If you can match our judges' selection,
15:16you will win a 10th anniversary used here.
15:19It is worth $60,000.
15:21Last year, as part of this competition,
15:23we bid farewell to Peter Brock,
15:25and who'll ever forget the time that Mark Scaife
15:27put Brocky on pole position
15:29for the Classic at Partner in Craig Lounge.
15:31Can he do it again for pole?
15:33Let's find out as the Top 10 Shootout continues.
15:37Well, here we go.
15:38The number one, mobile one, HRT Commodore.
15:41The guy who just set the mountain alight last year
15:43when he was teamed with Peter Brock
15:45in his final banners.
15:47Mark Scaife is behind the wheel.
15:49We are inside the final three cars.
15:52Let's see what Mark Scaife can do.
15:54Well, it's just amazing, isn't it,
15:56when you think of how formidable
15:58the VT Commodore can be.
15:59Look at Scaife working hard.
16:01He's so...
16:02But, yeah, just talking to the team
16:03about the VT Commodore,
16:04they're saying they don't feel they've got
16:06the aerodynamics right on the car.
16:07It still seems to be as they want it to,
16:09but Scaife did up working well.
16:10Imagine how quick it's going to be
16:11when they do get happy with it.
16:12Exactly, and we should add that that's four.
16:14Two, ten, four, nine.
16:15So that's five.
16:16That's half a second quicker than Mark Larkin.
16:18It's a new combination, of course,
16:20not new last year,
16:21and he uses all the road.
16:22Mark Scaife has got this really wound up.
16:25Mark Scaife on maximum attack.
16:27Look at the wheel get up in the air.
16:28The crowd chasing team up on top of the mountain.
16:30Banners everywhere.
16:31Good 500.
16:32That's Sandown.
16:34He's also used by the series this year
16:36and win his second title.
16:38So it's a car with a lot of success around it already.
16:41A great shot as he brings it over the top of the hill
16:43down toward Forest Silbo.
16:45Points it out.
16:46Look how close he comes to the concrete wall.
16:47They're using all the road.
16:48Rod straight now.
16:49Ha ha, well.
16:50The split tells the story.
16:52He's a good...
16:53So Scaife is carrying an enormous amount of speed
16:56in the VT Commodore.
16:57He's got it together through here,
16:58through the Caltex chase.
16:59We saw what happened to Jason Barguana.
17:01I'm sure Mark will do the job.
17:03He keeps it nice.
17:04Now under the Dunlop Bridge,
17:06Murray's just robbed Mark Scaife and Peter Brock
17:08of finishing and perhaps winning the race this year.
17:11We'll wait and see as Scaife comes up.
17:13A 2.09.89!
17:152.09.89 for Scaife.
17:18Whoa, speedy Gonzales.
17:202.09.89.
17:22We took some wing off it.
17:23That's all I can tell you.
17:25Well, you look good.
17:26Yeah, no, fantastic.
17:27The car's great.
17:28You've got to be over the moon with that.
17:31Thanks, mate.
17:32Best of luck.
17:33Thanks, mate.
17:34Tony Longhurst, the flying Queenslander,
17:37in the cast.
17:38Turns it in on the pit straight.
17:39Gets the wheels up on the kerb.
17:40Slides towards the kerb on the other side
17:42as he heads out on his hot lap.
17:44His season has really turned around.
17:4742-year-old now.
17:48He's changed tyre brands.
17:50Very much committed.
17:51Changed tyre brands.
17:52Changed teammates again for the 1,000km enduro.
17:55Last year it was fellow Queenslander.
17:57Queenslander this year in Jeff Brabham combination.
18:00Look at Longhurst really forcing the Falcon
18:02up the mountain pretty hard.
18:04Glides the kerb.
18:05Very wide.
18:06I thought Baraguana went wide.
18:07That was much wider.
18:08This man is an absolute acrobat.
18:1042-year-old.
18:11He grew up in Sydney.
18:12Now lives up on the Gold Coast,
18:13as many of the four teams are.
18:15And don't forget last year,
18:16these guys, after an engine failure in qualifying,
18:19came from last to lead the race
18:21but had a broken throttle cable
18:23and that dropped them out of the event.
18:24Tony Longhurst is backing himself in this race.
18:26He's not getting the support from the press.
18:28Speaking of backing himself, Mark,
18:30a couple of days ago,
18:31about three or four days ago,
18:3325-1 as he gets a little loose.
18:35Longhurst said,
18:36I'll take those odds.
18:37He's confident in his own ability,
18:39the ability of the team and the car.
18:41Longhurst down through Forastelbo.
18:43It's very quick too.
18:44He's only three-tenths of a second
18:46at the top of the mountain.
18:47Let's see if this Ford can haul.
18:49Eight-nine is the call.
18:51An unbelievable time set by the Mobile One HRT pilot.
18:55And Mark's really smooth through the Caltex chase.
18:58The run under the bridge, down to Murray's.
19:01He's almost there.
19:02He's got a bit of time up his sleeve.
19:03Let's see what Tony Longhurst's 4-4.
19:08Good one, Tony.
19:09Great lap.
19:10Second quicker than yesterday
19:11but still not quite quick enough.
19:12What time did Skaifey do?
19:132-9-8.
19:15I'm just absolutely wrapped.
19:16You know, the car's sensational.
19:17The Dunlop tyres are working good.
19:20Now we'll go to Rose.
19:21Have you got a nice, strong throttle cable this year?
19:24Certainly have, Barry.
19:25No worries there.
19:26Great lap, Tony.
19:27Thanks, guys.
19:30This year wasn't such a pleasant year.
19:32It has been all smiles in the Glensea.
19:34Neil Crompton not only changing teams
19:36but changing manufacturers from Holden to...
19:38Top ten shootout.
19:39Let's see if he can knock off Mark Skaifey.
19:41That's the time in the bottom right of his seat
19:43in the Ford Credit Falcon.
19:44They've been doing a lot of work
19:46as he torques himself around the track.
19:48He torques himself every corner.
19:49Come on, come on, come on.
19:50Watch him.
19:51Absolute concentration.
19:54Up into the cutting.
19:55Mark Skaifey on the front row in second position.
19:58If he wants to do that, he has to better
20:01Tony Longhurst's time of a 2-10-4-4.
20:04So if he wants to go one better, it's a long way there.
20:07It's another 6 tenths.
20:08It's a 2-0-9-8-9.
20:10It's FAI 1000 Classic.
20:12Well, Ford fans giving him a yell, giving him a cheer.
20:14Come on, Glenn.
20:15Put it on top for us.
20:17A lot of work has gone into this car.
20:19Followed it all week.
20:20Let's hope his attitude more to the point is Glenn
20:23because he said, well, I'm not going to let myself
20:25get carried away.
20:26I've almost, I've been nine laps from winning
20:28this hudder just yet.
20:29Well, he's a tenth of a second slower than...
20:31It's looking pretty safe unless Glenn Seaton has been able...
20:34Good run out of the Caltex chase.
20:36The run down, 2-10-4-4.
20:38We'll see if he's going to beat Skaife's time.
20:40The run to the line.
20:41Across comes Glenn Seaton.
20:43A 2-10-8-8.
20:47Yeah, Mark's done a sensational time, really.
20:49Congratulations.
20:50Good job to the dipper and the lock up front brakes.
20:53Yeah.
20:54But really, it's as good as we're going to do
20:57and tomorrow's race day.
20:58That's the day I want to win.
21:00Great. Best of luck.
21:01Thanks, Barry.
21:02This score tells us that Craig Lowndes and Mark Skaife
21:05have pole position in the 2-0-9-8-9.
21:08It's a pole position record for the FAI 1000 Classic.
21:11Tony Longhurst and Brabham will start on the front row
21:14in position 2.
21:15Markham and Jones, 4th.
21:16And Faulkner and Kelly, 5th.
21:186th through to 10 now.
21:19Bowen McConville in the Falcon EL.
21:21Gardner and Stoffel in the Commodore in 7th.
21:24Jason Barguana and Jimmy Richards in...
21:26The defending champions, 9th.
21:28And of course, Greg Murphy didn't start the shootout
21:31but he will start the race in 10th.
21:33We'll wrap it all up right after this.
21:36What an incredible day at Bathurst.
21:38We had the top ten shootout with Mark Skaife
21:40absolutely hammering the mountain and taking pole position.
21:43We've had the GTP race and a thrilling finish
21:46between Jimmy Richards and Neil Crompton.
21:48And, Billy Woods, we've been asking the question,
21:50can it get any better?
21:51Well, I guess if anything's going to make it better,
21:54it's 1,000km worth of V8 racing tomorrow.
21:57Yes, and the faith race, no matter what happens.
22:00I know it's a cliché, but we've got to do it.
22:03I know it's a cliché, but we've had a neck-and-neck struggle
22:06with the GTP showroom showdown
22:08and we've just had a record qualifying time.
22:10And it didn't even rain in the last few days.
22:13The thing to point out, though,
22:14is that only five of last year's top ten finishers
22:17actually finished in the scheme of things.
22:19But it is very important to the drivers
22:21and, of course, there's a few bobbing it as well.
22:23Here's Mark Osler with our pole sitter.
22:25History made at Mount Panorama today in the top ten shootout.
22:28Mark Skaife sitting the fastest ever.
22:30Tonya Wilkie from FAI, the race sponsor,
22:32to make the presentation of the $15,000.
22:349.89, history made on the mountain.
22:36Here's $15,000 to commemorate.
22:38Well, Mark, what a great effort.
22:39Fastest ever lap around Mount Panorama.
22:41Boy, that mobile Holden Racing Team Commodore's really honking.
22:44Well, we love it, and he offered us a nine lap for $25,000.
22:48And it was a wet day, so I'm glad we finally...
22:51...got pole, and Lownsey will do a good job, obviously,
22:54in the first session, so we'll see how we go.
22:56He's been on pole a lot this year
22:57in the Shell Australian Touring Car Championship.
22:59Hasn't converted it to many race victories,
23:01so it'll be an interesting touring car champion,
23:03teammate Craig Lownes.
23:05And it's good news.
23:06Jason Bright and Greg Murphy had so much trouble
23:08getting their cars back on track.
23:09Apparently in good shape now.
23:11Well, they are.
23:12I've spoken to both their team managers.
23:14Got the whole top ten, top 12 times.
23:16It's so close, and if the weather holds out,
23:18I reckon we're going to be in for an absolute drama tomorrow.
23:21Yes, and it's going to be an amazing day.
23:23Let's have a look at what's in store for us on Sunday.
23:26The FAI 1000 Classic starting off at 7am.
23:30The warm-up is a quarter of an hour after that.
23:32We've got the HQ Holdens on track,
23:34popular here at Holden's 50th anniversary year.
23:36Formula Ford's after that, and the AM.
23:39Should be a spectacular...
23:40...had a lot of track time, have now had that track time.
23:43The times between the various driver combinations
23:45are so close, it should be amazing.
23:47Panorama, we'll catch you tomorrow.
24:27We can beat them.
24:31We can be heroes.
24:42We can be heroes.
24:48Be heroes.
24:56We can be heroes.
25:05We can be heroes.
25:09Just one day.
