00:00yesterday. Bargwana and Perkins who is in the Castrol Cougars car and then we go
00:04back behind for more. Steven Johnson deputizing for Dick in the Falcon. John
00:10Briggs right up there too. Dean Croswell another one strong one of the Trust Bank.
00:14Ericsson, Commodore, Mazera and his lone VT Gardner getting, recovering from that
00:19accident in the first corner. He made his way back to the field. Tandor too right
00:22back there. Look at that. Crompton and Engle right off the back of the grid.
00:25He's going to be pumped up for a big result. That's where the interest is
00:28going to be. If you missed yesterday's race, Neil Crompton is filling in or
00:32racing instead of, if you like, Glenn Seaton who was missing his first race
00:37meeting in almost 10 years. Hard to believe isn't it? And Glenn's not so
00:41unhappy about not being in the car. He'd rather give Neil time in the Ford Credit
00:45Falcon in the lead-up to the FAI 1000 Classic at Bathurst. So Seaton is sitting
00:49on the sidelines to give Crompton time in the car and it worked. Yesterday he
00:53got into the lead. There he is there behind his old teammate Wayne Gardner. As
00:57soon as he passed Mark Larkin, the car broke a Watts linkage and the back end
01:01was just basically falling out of it. He did well to hang on to it but came into
01:05the pits and will start almost at the rear of grid. Just amazing how
01:09philosophical Neil was after that race. He said, oh well, it's motor racing, you know, I'm
01:13going to win one of these things one day. But apparently Glenn was really quite
01:16upset about that, the car failing at that critical moment. I believe it was a
01:20bolt, one of the securing bolts that holds that Watts linkage in place. That's
01:23actually a suspension item which locates the axle and apparently it was a brand
01:29new bolt and it broke under load and it's just one of those things that happens in
01:32racing but very very unfortunate for our man Crompton. The kerbs around here do
01:36play a big part of the circuit and I don't know, maybe that did have
01:40something to do with it. The guys are using the kerbs a fair bit just as we see the
01:44Indy cars do and maybe it put a bit of strain, a bit of extra strain on that on that
01:48part of the car and it did break which is a real shame. Quick shot of Russell
01:53Winkle there as Glenn Seton, as we mentioned, is sitting on the sidelines and he's with Barry.
01:57Yeah, are you nervous then Glenn? Oh, always nervous, especially even on the
02:02line or even probably more so on the pits to tell you the truth but Neil's done a
02:05sensational job yesterday and it's just a bad luck that the car broke but I think
02:09he'll come through the group now and I think he'll do very well.
02:12Great, thanks for it mate. Thank you. We look forward to seeing those two guys in
02:16Mount Panorama on November 14 and 15 as someone's heading into the pits, that's
02:20Dean Croswell in a Trust Bank Ericsson car, young Tasmanian driver who's driving
02:25instead of Greg Crick, his regular teammate for the Enduros, so obviously
02:29he's trying to get more time in the car, he has come into the pits, not quite sure
02:32of the problem there. Jason Barguana in the Valvoline, Cummins Commodore getting
02:37set, getting ready to go, suffering from a bad back this weekend. He's been seeing
02:42a chiropractor up here on the coast to try and get that fixed. Crompton rolls up
02:46to his grid, it should be a good one, 19 laps, it's around about 85 kilometres in
02:51length, set to go. The two Queenslanders off the front row, Larkham and Bright,
02:56let's see who gets the jump, away we go, it's Larkham, gets another brilliant start,
02:59that's what he did yesterday but Scaife slotted in, here comes Longhurst and Barguana,
03:04this first corner is going to be very interesting, as they come on down,
03:07Steven Johnson looks for the inside run, let's hope they get through, Scaife's in the second,
03:11Bright and Barguana touch, and Alan Jones! Yeah, it looks like Jones couldn't, he tried to turn into the corner,
03:17there was a bit of hustle behind him, he had to go straight down the escape road,
03:20we're watching the officials to see if they want to ping him too, but the field
03:23relatively cleanly through that first difficult chicane and up toward ANA for
03:28the first time. You see Alan Jones give John Faulkner a bit of a hip and shoulder there, as he finally got back on track,
03:33but Scaife's in second, Bright, Barguana, Perkins, getting all out of shape in the Castrol Cougars car,
03:39Steven Johnson has slotted in behind him, then we go back to Paul Romano.
03:43Well, they all got through the first corner cleanly this time, so we haven't lost any cars,
03:48as you said, oh, Tanner giving Crompton a touch-up, I think Tanner should be a bit careful,
03:53he had to cause that accident yesterday, and better be watching himself today,
03:58that he doesn't get in too much more trouble, there's Russell Engle, he's making his way through.
04:03Well, Crompton made a good start too, he was up to 12th there, as they came out of Bardicard,
04:08turned down the Esplanade for the first time, so Crompton on a real charge as well.
04:11Tanner and Engle fighting it out here, side-by-side, they've gone through this, the last turn side-by-side,
04:16going into the chicane this time, this is going to be close, Russell, got him, outbreaks him,
04:23nice move, there's Wayne Gardner in front of this bunch.
04:27Well, now the next one to get through here is Neil Crompton, these are the three guys,
04:30well, Crompton wasn't tangled up in it, but Engle certainly was, and Garth Tanner was caught up in it, the 21-year-old.
04:37Out of Conrad Jupiter's turn, down toward the esses that lead through to the Honda hairpin,
04:42and onto the pit straight for the first time.
04:44Mark Larkin doing a super job out front, he's got a few car lengths over Mark Scaife, got a great start again.
04:50Well, that's good to see Scaife finally getting a quick start, because he's suffered, he's suffered this year,
04:55and it's been very frustrating for him, he's been quite annoyed with himself, but he finally put one together,
04:59got the jump, keep in mind he started from 12th in yesterday's race, worked his way up into 3rd,
05:04now he's running 2nd, there's Perkins in the Cougars' car, saving the VT for Bapist.
05:09That's a great speed shot too there, as they sweep down the pit straight, toward the esses for the first time,
05:15plenty of speed among the V8 supercars as they thread their way through this concrete canyon.
05:191350 kilograms of motorcar, about 600 horsepower, a very difficult job, Greg Murphy.
05:25Yeah, it is very difficult, and obviously using these kerbs, as you can see, these cars take a real punishing around here,
05:31a lot of hard braking from high speeds, long hard braking, the brakes take an absolute punishing,
05:36and you've got to concentrate 100%, it's a real concentration circuit,
05:40you sort of lapse ever so slightly, and you find yourself missing an apex or overshooting a corner.
05:45First time across the line, it was 1.3 seconds, the gap between Mark Scaife and his pursuer,
05:49and did the leader, Mark Larkin.
05:51Look further back, Neil Crompton, have you a go back there.
05:55Tony Longhurst in the Castrol Ford, well placed, a little bit of work to do to catch up to these front runners,
06:00so there he is, Barguana's in front of him, so Tony's sitting fifth at the moment,
06:03there's a good battle further back between Perkins Jones and Steven Johnson,
06:07who I thought may have been a little bit higher, but he is running in the spare car,
06:11Dick Johnson's number one car, left back at the factory, saving that one for the FI 1000 as well.
06:18Tony Longhurst, very fast in practice here, he's running in the battle for fourth position.
06:24Tremendous mix of cars up and down through the field,
06:26the order now, Larkin holding a 1.3 second gap over Scaife, Bright, Barguana in fourth,
06:31Longhurst in fifth position, then it's back to Perkins on screen,
06:35Jones, Steven Johnson in the 17 Ford, Paul Romano and John Faulkner in the better electrical car,
06:40he's up in the top ten.
06:42Well, Larry's driving the Castrol Cougars car, and he said yesterday,
06:45I might be driving the girls' car, but you won't be seeing me in a dress.
06:50Had a bit of a giggle at that, but we will see Keren Brewer and Melinda Price back in that car,
06:54here's an earlier incident, Steve Reed, Steve Reed had a problem in that corner yesterday as well,
06:59so he's really not having a good time here this weekend.
07:02He received a penalty yesterday, didn't he?
07:04Yeah, he did, and that's John Briggs getting a hit from him this time, ripping the front spoiler off,
07:09so he'll be making it to the pits if he can make it back round, but look at Mark Larkin,
07:13he's pulled a lead, another great start, his opening lap was a Craig Lowndes-style first lap,
07:19blitzed away from the field, Mark Scaife in hot pursuit now,
07:22Scaife will be obviously probably just looking at it, assessing the situation,
07:26he won't want to go too hard too early, there's still about 12 laps to go,
07:30and so he's got to sort of look at it and say, well, I'll hold back a bit and see what happens.
07:35Longhurst still running in fifth from Perkins, Jones and Steeve,
07:38Johnson, Faulkner, Romano, Eagle, Crofton hasn't been able to get past Tander as yet,
07:43and there he is back behind his old team-mate Wayne Gardner.
07:46Larkin is the fastest man on the circuit too, a 1.550.4 for his first flying lap,
07:52the gap's still 1.3 seconds back to Mark Scaife with Jason Bright hanging in his mirrors,
07:56the first of the Valvoline Commodores.
07:58Neil Crofton, outside of Wayne Gardner, and gets it too, nice move.
08:02Nice outside move, yeah, good work.
08:04Overtaking the former boss.
08:06You were saying yesterday, the brakes on the Ford Credit Falcon were superb,
08:09absolutely fantastic, and obviously that was an out-braking manoeuvre down the outside,
08:13so the brakes are working exceptionally well.
08:15Crofton up to 14th position, he was up to 12th,
08:17but there was a bit of a collision between himself and Tander in that first lap around
08:21that may have cost him a bit of time, but we're on board with Neil Crofton
08:24as he tries to pick his way through the field from the back.
08:27He's got a long way to catch up, hasn't he, but he's doing well,
08:29just as we saw, just got Gardner, so that puts him into 13th position.
08:33The next one on the menu is Garth Tander,
08:35you can see him just up through the next corner in the Valvoline Cummins Commodore.
08:38Tander is tangling at the moment with Ingel Romano.
08:41Yeah, he'll be hoping for a bit of a battle there to slow these guys up
08:44so he can catch up on the tail of them, and that looks to be happening.
08:47These guys in front, a real big battle.
08:49You can see Neil really trying hard, locking a brake.
08:53Well, there's no doubt this car, the Ford Credit Falcon,
08:55was the fastest car on the circuit yesterday.
08:57He set a new lap record of 1.54,
09:00so he was very, very fast until that watch linkage broke.
09:04This is on board with Ingel, nothing in sight until Romano.
09:06Oh, contact there!
09:08Oh, he's lost the grip.
09:10Oh, and Ingel!
09:12Wow, and...
09:13Oh!
09:15Capitalising on that, look at the damage to Ingel's car now.
09:18He's hit the back of Romano's Commodore.
09:20There's smoke, there's damage, bodywork.
09:22Ingel has really hurt himself.
09:24There's a lot of damage on the front of his car.
09:26The nose of that Castro Holden is all caved in.
09:30And he's going to have to watch that tyre,
09:31because if it keeps rubbing as bad as it looks like it is now,
09:34he's going to find himself in a bit of trouble.
09:35He's got those enforcer eyes on again, hasn't he?
09:38He will not be happy with that.
09:40Didn't like getting the contact with Romano.
09:42They hit again. Romano went into the wall.
09:44He was down the inside of Romano.
09:45Romano's turned in and hit the back of Russell's car,
09:48which has sent him straight ahead.
09:49Now, let's see if this tyre keeps rubbing.
09:51I think it is. I've seen this a number of times.
09:52Oh, yeah. It still is, but it's not too bad.
09:55That rubber that it is wearing on will wear away.
09:58He'll have to be pretty careful to keep a good feel of that tyre
10:01and make sure it doesn't go flat.
10:02I know that yesterday he wasn't very happy
10:04about the first corner incident
10:05when Garth Tander came barging on in.
10:07Here's a replay of this incident.
10:09Up the inside.
10:10Oh, Russell, no.
10:12Actually, sorry, Paul Romano. The contact was before that.
10:14That's right. Sorry, Paul Romano.
10:15That actually wasn't his fault at all.
10:17And Russell was just going very quickly.
10:18Now, watch here.
10:19Valvoline Commodore takes advantage.
10:21Now, angle, crunch, bang.
10:23Into the back of Romano there.
10:25So, that's done the damage to the front of Russell's car.
10:27Let's have a look at that on a Honda replay from another angle.
10:30No contact at all there, actually.
10:31Russell's just gone in very, very deep.
10:35So, it was Garth Tander.
10:36Garth Tander was the big winner, wasn't he?
10:37Straight through up the inside.
10:38Oh, just dug up the inside.
10:39Let's have a look at that from another angle.
10:41No. Well, you can see plenty of damage to the Castrol Commodore.
10:44Looks like he may be able to keep going.
10:46Let's hope the engine doesn't overheat
10:47and the cooling ducts of that engine have been damaged or blocked in some way.
10:50Here's the battle for seventh and eighth
10:52between Alan Jones and the Komatsu Ford.
10:54Now, Alan goes very well here on the Gold Coast.
10:57Last year, he finished third in the opening race.
11:00That was on the new one, Murph.
11:02And he's also picked up another podium finish in early years.
11:04I think it was in the first year, back in 94.
11:06So, he likes racing here on his home circuit,
11:08but he hasn't been able to bridge the gap
11:09between himself and Larry Perkins in the Castrol Cougars car.
11:13The two Longhurst Falcons doing a super job this weekend.
11:16Obviously, working extremely well on their Dunlop tyres around here.
11:20And John Faulkner there.
11:21Oh, no! Romano!
11:23That's a big crash.
11:25You saw him get tapped once.
11:26That was the damage on the back,
11:27but he's really given the front a nose job.
11:29Look at that. And the rear end as well.
11:30The rear end's more damaged than what it was before.
11:33Turn and turn twice.
11:34There is Paul Romano.
11:35He had a dreadful time at the Tickford 500 at Sandown,
11:39crashing big time on the main straight.
11:41And there's a lot of water coming out of that car.
11:43You can see all that green coolant.
11:45They may have to put a red flag.
11:47Safety car is out on the circuit already.
11:49It's actually just down in front of us, isn't it,
11:51on the start-finish straight.
11:52Under yellow flag conditions pretty soon.
11:55Safety car on the track.
11:57And we may even see a red flag
11:58if they can't get this thing tidied up.
12:00The cars have got to drive across that coolant.
12:01It's very, very slippery.
12:04We'll watch with interest.
12:05Paul Romano. Well, they'd be devastated.
12:06They're only a small team.
12:08Well, that car was only just repaired from Sandown.
12:10Sandown, yeah, exactly.
12:11A lot of extensive damage to it on the front end.
12:14And they've got another huge job ahead.
12:16And look at the skid marks.
12:17He's come a long way down from there.
12:19He's had two very high-speed crashes
12:21in his last two outings.
12:22Not yesterday, of course, but at Sandown
12:24and now here on the Gold Coast.
12:26Obviously, he's all right.
12:27He's on his feet and talking to the team.
12:28Here's a replay.
12:30Something's broken in the rear of that car.
12:34Well, there was no one else around him, was there?
12:35No, there was no one else there on that shot anyway.
12:38Now, that may be from that little incident that he had
12:40when he hit the wall with Russell Engel.
12:41So I'd say something's broken.
12:43Yeah, absolutely.
12:45The rear axle's hanging out at the bottom of it, I think.
12:48So he may have had a broken Watts linkage,
12:50maybe, what we saw on Compton's car.
12:52In the rear end of the diff there.
12:53Thomas Mazera and the Denzatron VT Commodore,
12:55lucky not to come in contact with Romano there
12:58as he scooted through on the inside.
12:59But Paul's okay.
13:02There's Barry Sheen on the spot.
13:04They're getting a word with Paul pretty soon,
13:05but he would be devastated.
13:08Barry Sheen?
13:09Yeah, Paul, did something break on the car?
13:11What happened, Barry?
13:12Going down the main straight, I got a blowout
13:15on the back rear tyre and it just spun around
13:17and I tried to correct it
13:19and it just threw me into the wall.
13:22But basically, Russell tried to pass me under brakes
13:26and lost it a bit and went on the grass
13:29and then came back on the track to get behind me.
13:31I got a tap from the back and it threw me into the wall
13:35and I let a few pass and I just said to my guys
13:38on the radio, just have a look.
13:40And on that particular lap, it blew out.
13:43A bit scary?
13:44Yeah, especially after getting punted out last time,
13:48doing about 240.
13:50All right, thanks very much.
13:51Yeah, thanks, Barry.
13:52Well, poor old Paul Romano didn't need that
13:54in the lead-up to Bathurst in November,
13:56but the team will work hard.
14:00There's a lot of damage to the front of that car.
14:02It certainly is an action-packed V8 supercar race.
14:05This is your McDonald's leaderboard.
14:07Larkham still leads the way from Skaife, Bright, Bargwana
14:10and Tony Longhurst.
14:11They are your top five.
14:12Perkins, Steve Johnson, John Faulkner, Ingle and Alan Jones.
14:16So something's happened there.
14:17Jones dropped back to 10th.
14:19Cromden still working his way forward.
14:21Tander back in 13th from Azera and Briggs.
14:23More right after this on Network 10.
14:38Welcome back.
14:40You're watching the Hogsbreath Cafe V8 supercar support race,
14:44and it's been action-packed right from the start.
14:47We've just witnessed Paul Romano having a very big incident,
14:50an accident on the main straight.
14:52Under caution car, safety car situation now.
14:54That's brought the pack right up.
14:56Have a look at this, though, as we wind through the field.
14:58The second Castrol car, Russell Ingle has already got up
15:01ahead there of Alan Jones.
15:03This is an earlier incident on the Honda Replay.
15:05Garth Tander doing it all by himself.
15:08Going down, that looks like ANA corner, the last left-hander there.
15:11So he let Neil Cromden and Russell Ingle through,
15:13who he's been dicing with for the last few laps.
15:15So this is to bring you up to date.
15:17This is how it sits, Larcombe.
15:18Then we go back to Skaife, Bright, Bargwana, Longhurst.
15:21They're your top five.
15:22Then Perkins, Steve Johnson, John Faulkner,
15:24as we go on board with Neil Cromden,
15:26who is currently sitting in 11th position.
15:30I'll tell you what, the men you've got to watch is Cromden
15:33and Russell Ingle.
15:34Now that the field's all bunched up,
15:35they're going to be going absolute gangbusters.
15:39Cromden there, visor up,
15:40just trying to get as much cooling air into the car.
15:42It must be so hot in those things, Greg.
15:44Yeah, very hot.
15:45See the little camera on the side of his helmet?
15:47Getting some great shots from that.
15:48It is very hot, especially today, 30 degrees outside.
15:51The temperature inside the car will be anything from 40 to 50 degrees.
15:55So the guys have got their cool suits on.
15:59Well, Barry, this one has been a ripper so far.
16:02Oh, I tell you what,
16:03you should have been down here when Paul Romano's thing is.
16:05It looks quick, but when you see it out of control
16:08and it's bouncing off the walls, it's ever so quick.
16:10I just spoke to Russell Ingle's engineer,
16:13and he said Russell said it's all burnt off
16:15where the body was touching the tyre.
16:17The main problem is he's got a lot of,
16:19it's bent the steering and it's towing out now.
16:21So any kind of luck, Cromden will get the best of him, won't he?
16:24Well, yeah, it's brought it all nice and close together.
16:26Under safety car conditions at the moment,
16:29they're now, I think they've completed seven laps.
16:32This is a 19-lap race.
16:34No word through from race control on whether this will be shortened or not.
16:40And no word as to whether when we're under race conditions again.
16:44But here is the man of the moment, Mark Larkham in the Mitre 10 Ford.
16:47Just warming up the tyres side to side,
16:49just trying to keep some heat in those Bridgestones
16:52while they're behind the safety car.
16:54These tyres really lose temperature as soon as you slow off.
16:57They want to retain as much as he possibly can.
17:00So when he arrives at the first corner after the safety car pulls off,
17:03he's got as much grip as he had when he was racing earlier.
17:05Shell Helix in car camera there.
17:07Marco hard at work.
17:08Now, we're just through 16 laps.
17:10So usually when these things happen, we do get a reduced race.
17:13So it's gone from 19 back to 16 laps.
17:15Now, apparently the tow hook was broken off this car, Romano's Commodore.
17:19That's why they're having some troubles removing the Siemens Mobile Commodore.
17:23Oh, boy, that thing's had more hits than Albert, hasn't it?
17:26I think how old it is, a 1994.
17:28That's Tony Longhurst's original VP Commodore
17:31converted to VR and VS specification.
17:33It's done a lot of race miles.
17:35Boy, it's had a few hits.
17:37They work very hard, though, as you pointed out before,
17:40and rightly so.
17:41They're only a very small team headed by Paul's father, Matt,
17:44former racing car champ himself.
17:46It's a tough weekend for them, Barry.
17:48Yes, and I think the reason for the delay,
17:50it's one thing getting Paul's car back on,
17:52but back behind me here,
17:54there's loads and loads of little bits and pieces of, you know, car,
17:57bits of fiberglass and steel and that.
17:59And even right out in front of me here,
18:01there's a load of stuff on the track that the guys are trying to sweep up.
18:04When I say a load of stuff, it's glass and everything.
18:07So it's no sort of two-minute job to clean the whole thing up.
18:10And more especially, I suppose, when the Indy cars come out,
18:13they'll have to have another go at it because there's a lot of glass around.
18:16Will you just stay behind that safety fence, old mate?
18:18Yeah, don't worry. I'm in good hands down here.
18:22So, cars weaving backwards and forwards, believe it or not.
18:26Still trying to keep temperature in the tyres.
18:29And I guess, Greg, even though it's a hot day
18:31and the track temperatures are so high, they still have to do that
18:34because the critical temperatures do drop a few degrees.
18:37Well, they do. These things, tyres cool down.
18:39Here's Tony Long who's with his arm out the window
18:41trying to get a bit of air in there.
18:43Tony, he's one of the fittest guys out there and he's still feeling the heat.
18:46So you do have to still retain that optimum operating temperature
18:50in the tyres.
18:51As I said, you don't want to arrive at the first turn
18:53and realise that they're 20 or 30 degrees cooler than what you'd want
18:56and go in a bit deep and lock them up.
18:58So just trying to retain that heat and it doesn't hurt them.
19:02And it sounds like we are going to go green next time round.
19:05The pace car will pull off. They've cleared up the circuit.
19:08Have a look at that.
19:09One of the champ car guys love coming down here.
19:12It's just the most picturesque circuit.
19:14They talk about Long Beach in California, but this one leaves that for dead.
19:20The word just through, we will go green when they come around
19:22onto the top of the circuit again.
19:24This looks like we're on board with Neil Crompton.
19:26Yes, indeed it is.
19:27And Crompton sits 11th at the moment behind Alan Jones
19:30and Ingle just in front of Jones.
19:33This is going to be great if this goes to green.
19:37Pace car lights are off, so definitely pulling in this time.
19:40Are you backing your team-mates, Goff?
19:42He's going to be good on the restart, but Larkham so far
19:45has proven to be great in the starts.
19:48The pressure is obviously not getting to him one single bit,
19:50so he's looking good.
19:51There's Russell Ingle just behind John Faulkner.
19:54You're not allowed to pass any car until you've got to the finish line.
19:57Look at Scaife right over Larkham.
19:59Larkham can control this because Scaife cannot go past him.
20:02He's hitting him. He's even hitting him.
20:05Eight laps to go.
20:06He's backed off. He's backed off.
20:08Mark Scaife's just passed Mark Larkham.
20:11What happens here?
20:12He should get a stop.
20:13Bright's coming in.
20:15Scaife's made a big error there.
20:17This guy's behind.
20:18Watch Russell Ingle.
20:20He's just behind that pack.
20:21One, two, three, four, five, six.
20:24He's up to seven.
20:25He's just passed one underneath, too.
20:27He's looking for the big inside line.
20:29He's trying to squeeze behind Faulkner.
20:31Good work.
20:32John Faulkner, I reckon, went across the inside of the corner there.
20:34Crompton's right in behind him, too,
20:35so we'll see if the Ford Credit Falcon and the Castro Holden run together
20:38as they sweep out of the SS.
20:40Russell Ingle!
20:42Exactly the same as last year.
20:44Crompton caught up in there, too.
20:45Boy, Thomas Mazeer's heart would have missed a beat.
20:47That's his Bathurst car.
20:48No, it's okay.
20:49His car's not badly damaged.
20:50Russell Ingle's is totaled.
20:52That's exactly where Seaton went off last year.
20:54And how freaky is this?
20:55Crompton was right behind him in the car Crompton was driving
20:58was the one Seaton crashed there last year.
21:00And look at John Faulkner's car, too.
21:01Ellen Jones, John Faulkner, all totally.
21:04Dear, oh, dear.
21:05And Neil Crompton's car, as well.
21:08He's getting out of there.
21:10Well, this is a big disaster in the lead-up to Bathurst,
21:13but I guess you could say it's fortunate
21:15some of these cars are spare cars.
21:17Russell Ingle is out of his car now.
21:19His car isn't one that's being raced at the FIA 1000.
21:22We've got a red flag, too,
21:23and I'd say that'll be the end of this race for sure.
21:25Yeah, that'll be over.
21:26That's going to take a long time to clean up.
21:27There's Crompton in the spare car.
21:28Just imagine the disappointment.
21:30He's got to be wondering what is going on this weekend.
21:33The kids are having a look inside, so too are the officials,
21:36but Neil won't be in much of a talking mood.
21:39Neil will Russell Ingle.
21:41Well, Neil, can you hear us?
21:45No.
21:46We just heard him talking to his crew,
21:48but you can see by the way he's pulling his gloves off there.
21:52Alan Jones.
21:53Alan Jones's car is extensively damaged.
21:55You can see the way the wheel's sticking out in the back.
21:57He's had a big hit.
21:58He's gone in after Russell Ingle.
22:00I think Neil Crompton's gone up the back of him.
22:02Ingle's OK.
22:04That was straight in.
22:05Oh, look at the damage.
22:07Very, very sad.
22:08Now, that's fortunate as well, as we were just saying.
22:10That's not his Bathurst car,
22:11but that's the risk you take when you're running only three or four weeks
22:14before the biggest race of the year.
22:16Glenn Seton there with the headsets on, walking back.
22:18Let's have a look at this in the replay.
22:20He's got something.
22:21Something's happened there.
22:22He's broken something.
22:23He's gone straight ahead.
22:24John Fortness just runs straight up the back.
22:27There is no room for error around that part of the track.
22:30And look at Thomas Mazzeo in the Densotron Commodore.
22:32He just backs it in.
22:33Luckily not to do anything too bad.
22:35I think he just had a little bit of damage to his rear bumper,
22:37but he's very, very lucky, man.
22:39Here we go in car.
22:40This was Lee Crompton.
22:42Now, Engle in front's gone in.
22:44There's Ellen Jones.
22:45Oh!
22:46Bang!
22:47Get out of it.
22:48Behind this, Wayne Gardner escaped scratch free.
22:51Well, they talk about the domino effect in those crashes,
22:53and that's the best description.
22:54It's just one after the other.
22:55Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang.
22:56Here we go again.
22:57Russell Engle here.
22:58He's got a problem.
22:59He's gone straight ahead.
23:00Poor old John Fortness.
23:01Nowhere to go.
23:02Two, three, four.
23:03Maybe that tyre blew.
23:04Yeah, mate.
23:05That was the underside, I think.
23:06Look at that.
23:08Neil Crompton's car's not too badly damaged,
23:10so I think he's got away okay.
23:11John Faulkner, that's his Bathurst car.
23:13Now, that is his FAI 1000 car,
23:15and he has got a lot of work to do.
23:17Well, I remember how devastated he was
23:18after he got turned around at Hidden Valley
23:20and did all that damage to the other end of the car.
23:22Now they've fixed it.
23:23The front end's copped it.
23:24Boy, it's hard on these teams.
23:25Well, he's got some good people behind him
23:27with Fisher and Paykel, and he's got an electrical.
23:30But he said they've had that much bad luck this year.
23:33He said, we cannot afford to have another big one,
23:35and, well, he's just been in a pretty serious one there.
23:38He's got a lot of his sponsors here this weekend, too,
23:40over on the back chicane,
23:41and they would have been watching with interest,
23:43but they wouldn't want to see that.
23:44Now, the chequered flag has come out,
23:46chequered flag and red in combination.
23:48So that is the end of the Hogsbreath V8 supercar race
23:51as they try and clean up this circuit
23:53for the champ car race this afternoon.
23:58Now, the word just through.
23:59The results are declared
24:00as we have a look at the real-time replay.
24:03Bang, bang, bang.
24:05Exactly the same as last year.
24:07It's going to be the hoodoo corner for the V8s, isn't it?
24:09Thomas Mazera did a sensational job avoiding that.
24:12Look at this.
24:13Yeah, Neil Cromwell's car is not too badly damaged,
24:15thank goodness.
24:16So they get away with that one, but...
24:18Dear, oh, dear.
24:19That one's not happy.
24:21He's got a lot of work to do.
24:23Sorry, just mentioned the word through from race control.
24:26Results on...
24:27Declared results after lap eight.
24:30Mark Larkin, well done to him,
24:32because he has got the double header,
24:34the same as Rodney Forbes in the GTP.
24:36Two starts, two wins.
24:38Scape in for the second from Barguana,
24:40Longhurst and Larry Perkins.
24:42Steve Johnson finished sixth overall.
24:44John Faulkner, although his car's damaged,
24:46in there for seventh.
24:47From Ingle, Alan Jones and Neil Cromden
24:49rounding out the top ten on the McDonald's scoreboard.
24:51Gardiner, Tandem, Mazera, Briggs and Heffernan.
24:54Well, the action's any indication there this afternoon.
24:57It's going to be red hot.
