00:00Welcome back to Sandown as we wait for the climax of the day, the Tickford 500.
00:09This is a sample of the great Holden Banners competition which we started last year and
00:13as you can see we had some marvellous entries there, some very creative entries, a lot of
00:18sentiment attached to it of course with Peter Brockwood of course above all that a lot of
00:22great Holden sentimentality and a lot of Holden support and this year we're going to launch
00:28the thing again and we have even bigger prizes. To the person who phones in and correctly
00:32nominates the winning banner this year, there'll be a prize of a brand new Holden Club Sports
00:38special vehicle worth around $70,000. The person who creates the best banner, they will
00:43receive a Commodore SS which is worth around $45,000. Two terrific prizes on offer in the
00:48Holden Banner competition this year. We'll unfold more details as we approach the FAI
00:531000 Classic but it is going to be sensational yet again and so too is the V8 season in
00:59general and one of the men responsible for that has been Tony Cochran. Barry Sheen's
01:03with him in Pit Lane. Tony, I was at the press conference to announce the calendar for 1999,
01:08very impressive. Yeah, I mean Barry we're delighted. I mean the announcement of the
01:13sensational Adelaide 500, the category's never been in such great health, record number of
01:18sponsors and you know we're in great shape. I must say to go back to Adelaide, I for one
01:24am looking forward to it. Yeah, I mean it's got all the right pedigree hasn't it? One
01:29of the world's great circuits, a tremendous street circuit. Adelaide people love a party
01:35and the V8s are going to be over there and we're going to have one hell of a weekend.
01:38I'll make you live up to that. I promise, I promise. Tony, thank you very much. Pleasure
01:43Barry. Yes, terrific season in store for us in 1999, adding the Enduros to the Shell
01:49Australian Touring Car Championship, the launch of that great race in Adelaide. This category
01:54of motorsport is absolutely firing at the moment. As we mentioned, great talent coming
01:58through the ranks as well. So much sponsorship money flooding in that there'll be many, many
02:03more cars and many, many more drivers given the opportunity and that talent will be seen
02:07to the full of course in the Tickford 500. Having a look at the pictures today as we're
02:11showing you above Sandown from the Whitman's Chocolates lightship. They'll be brought to
02:16you throughout the afternoon of course. There it is in the sky and thankfully the weather
02:20has been very, very good to us so far. Hopefully it will stray dry for the main event coming
02:24up soon. But of course the support events have been fantastic. You've just seen the
02:27GTP cars but the Formula Holdens are coming up soon and now highlights of the Formula
02:31Fords. This is how they'll line up on the Shell Helix grid for the Formula Fords. Justin
02:37Cotter will start from pole alongside Alex Davison. Steve Owen out of three and Ashley
02:41Seward from four. Out of row three, Greg Ritter and the Spectrum chassis. Tom Saviri, Aaron
02:46McNally out of seven, Daniel Orr out of eight. Should be very entertaining and this grid
02:50is based off yesterday's first race. Ryan Farrell and Luke Youlden, Timo Holko and Robert
02:55Jones. Out of 13, Craig Kermond and Stuart Clostera. 15, Leanne Ferrier and Simon Wheeler
03:03out of 16. We go back to 17 and it's Kenny Habul, Christian Murchison way back. That's
03:08a poor finish for him. Something must have went wrong yesterday. Wayne Stoddart and Steve
03:12Grockel. Cameron Shearer and John Walters out of 21, 22, 23. Will Power and Stella Pizzi
03:17out of 24. Well as usual this race won't disappoint. Eight laps around Sandown. Away we go. It
03:25looks like Cotter who got away to the best start. It's going to be frantic. There's another
03:29big field of Formula Fords. Head down into Shell Mastercard turn. It was Justin Cotter
03:34who did the business yesterday. We'll see what he can do today. Big gaggle of cars.
03:38Cotter, Davison, Owen, Seward, Saviri. They're all in there side by side as they swing into
03:42turn one. Shell Mastercard turn looks like a pretty clean start to this eight lapper.
03:46Well Alex Davison got away to a great start. He slots into second spot. As they all work
03:52their way around. Well this is going to be a very interesting one. We're lucky to be
03:56joined in commentary by reigning and newly crowned Australian Formula Ford champ Adam
04:00Macro who's driving a V8 supercar today. But Adam welcome aboard. What's the strategy here?
04:06First lap around Sandown. Go like hell. Yeah head down and basically you've just got to
04:12try and get a gap. Especially around Sandown with the two really long straights. You've
04:16just got to try and get a gap. Otherwise people will just tow by you down each straight. It's
04:20been a pretty hectic year for you. Had a bit of mechanical drama toward the end there which
04:24maybe thought was threatening your championship position. But you got through and won the
04:27championship. Congratulations. Thanks a lot. Yeah it was a great year. I couldn't have hoped
04:31for anything else better. And just sensational. Well Justin Cotter's lost the lead. He's gone
04:38back to third. Alex Davison has slotted into that number one position. So a good move for
04:46the young Victorian. This is his home track and he's been on the improve right throughout this
04:49season. Finished seventh in the Formula Ford championship and is certainly one to watch.
04:53Steve Owens sitting in second spot. Cotter still back there in third. Then we pick up Ashley Seward
04:57and Greg Ritter rounding out the top five. Great battle here too. Side by side as they come across
05:03the top. Down toward Exxon Falcon quarter. But it's Davison managing to hold it. Contact between
05:09two at the back. They managed to keep it off the Armco. That was Justin Cotter. He got caught up
05:15in that unfortunately. Tremendous battle here as you always see in Formula Ford racing. Let's check
05:19that out on the HSV replay. There they are. Tango coming across a very frightening part of the
05:24circuit out at Mack Road. Not nice to get out of shape over there. That's the one place you definitely
05:29don't want to go off on. Look at this battle for the lead. And just down the inside goes Owens.
05:34Fantastic manoeuvre under brakes at Shell MasterCard turn. And that puts Davison back to third position.
05:42Saved with the meat in the sandwich. Steve Owens another consistent top ten finisher in this year's
05:47Australian Formula Ford Championship as he leads the way up the back straight lap. Three of eight.
05:51Look at this. The top three have broken away. Alex Davison will be a little bit disappointed to lose
05:56that lead run a bit in Formula Ford. That doesn't mean anything right out of Mack Road. You've been in that
06:01situation many times. I have yes. And this is one of the situations that you don't really want to
06:09be in. Especially in second position there. Because you could or even first. Because two of the guys
06:13behind you could probably tow by you down the next straight. So you've really got to try really hard
06:18around the really tight bits. And try and get a gap. That's exactly what we've seen Alex Davison do. Come
06:24from third up into second. Look at the young guy. He's on a real charge now. This is good stuff. A
06:28little over halfway distance here. This Tickford 500 trophy race for the Formula Fords. Here's a
06:34replay of an earlier incident down in Shell MasterCard. Lucky he didn't flip him over there. One wheel up in the air.
06:40Let's have a look at that from another angle. The HSV replay. There we go.
06:49Big contact. Unfortunately those two got away with minimal amount of damage. Hopefully they were able
06:55to rejoin the race. Plenty of biff and barge happening around Sandon. Here's another one.
06:58Just a moment behind there. Just managed to catch it. Look at this. This has got to be a
07:04breathtaking run over the top of the hill for the final time. Well well done Ashley Saywardy's
07:08patience may pay off. He sat back in third. He tried a few moves occasionally on both Davison
07:15and Wilmore to the point. Steve Owen. Now look at this. Let's see if Alex Davison gets the
07:19toe that you heard Adam Macro talking about. Here's Steve Owen. He tries to pull out of the
07:22draft. Now look at the third place driver. This is mayhem. This is frantic. Up the back straight.
07:27Look at them dicing. This is great stuff. Into this top corner. Sayward has got the lead. Davison's
07:31gone the outside run. Does he have enough? No. Steve Owen still hangs on. Davison's gone left a bit high and dry.
07:37Oh and he's made a mistake under brakes. Sayward made a little blue coming under brakes. That's
07:42allowed Owen to take advantage. Can you believe that? And that is it. Steve Owen will take this
07:46one out. There is too much of a gap back to Ashley Sayward. Davison's still going to have to try hard
07:51to pick up that second spot. It'll be hard luck for him because he led the majority of this race.
07:55But it's going to be Steve Owen as we thank this year's Formula Ford champ Adam Macro and wish him
08:00well today. Well done Steve Owen. A great win in the Formula Ford race here at the Tickford 500.
08:06Hard luck to Alex Davison who finished back in third. Ashley Sayward who made that little slip
08:11up on the last lap comes in for second. Let's check the final results for you for the Formula
08:16Fords. Steve Owen in for that great win and Ashley Sayward hanging on for second spot. Hard luck to
08:21Ashley because he was driving very well close to the finish. Alex Davison third. McNally fourth
08:25and Costera in fifth position. Saviri back in sixth. Justin Cotter back in seventh. Daniel
08:30Orr. Christian Murchison worked his way from 18th up to ninth. A great job with Greg Ritter
08:34rounding out the top ten. Well stay with us here on Network 10 with VAC right after this.
