00:00In the summertime, the branchline stationmasters enjoy a friendly competition for the most beautiful station on the island of Sodor.
00:13The engines love to help too.
00:18One evening, the Fat Controller came to the shed.
00:22I want Percy to collect some flower bushes for Lord Chidmouth Station, he said. They're at Maithwaite.
00:28Maithwaite? Percy said. Yes, sir, he added nervously.
00:35Percy chuffed anxiously through the thickening fog.
00:39He doesn't like travelling to Maithwaite at night.
00:42The line passes through a junction next to a spooky old quarry mine.
00:49Percy hoped the signal at the junction would be green.
00:52He didn't want to stop next to the mine, but the signal was red.
00:56He had to stop.
01:03Suddenly, he saw something.
01:18Bouncing buffers, cried Percy.
01:21His driver hadn't seen the old chimney sink into the ground.
01:25The signal changed. Percy was so scared, he steamed away as fast as he could.
01:33The next day, Percy was telling Donald and Douglas about the disappearing chimney.
01:38It's the naughty gnomes, teased Donald.
01:40We fat men with big feet that make strange things happen, said Douglas.
01:44It's legendary. They steal your wheels and pinch your funnels.
01:49Percy didn't want to believe them, but he wasn't sure.
01:55The Fat Controller was waiting for Percy at Dryor Station.
01:59I want you to collect some trucks from the abandoned mine, he said.
02:03Yes, sir, Percy answered, but he really didn't want to go there again.
02:10Percy hoped he wouldn't see anything else disappear.
02:14He slipped into the sidings and buffered up to the trucks.
02:18Spooky, stammered Percy.
02:22Suddenly, another building at the old mine sank into the ground.
02:35What was that? shouted his driver.
02:40Double bouncing buffers, shrieked Percy.
02:43He was so scared, he lurched forward and ran the truck.
02:48Naughty gnomes, cried Percy.
02:52He steamed away faster than before, all the way back to Lower Tidmouth Station.
03:01Percy's driver told the Fat Controller what they had seen.
03:05It's the naughty gnomes, cried Percy.
03:08They like to cause trouble. It's legendary.
03:11Nonsense, said the Fat Controller.
03:14The old buildings are collapsing into empty mineshafts, that's all.
03:18But I saw the gnomes, protested Percy.
03:21Of course you did, said the Fat Controller. Garden gnomes.
03:25Garden gnomes?
03:27To decorate Lower Tidmouth Station, the Fat Controller said.
03:31They're not scary. Garden gnomes bring good luck.
03:34And he ordered Percy to return immediately and get them.
03:37Percy was scared, but he knew he had to be responsible.
03:41So he carried on.
03:43I'm not scared. I'm not scared.
03:51He waited for something else spooky to happen, but it didn't.
03:55And the Fat Controller was right.
03:58The garden gnomes weren't scary at all.
04:03His driver and fireman had collected the gnomes,
04:06and Percy took them straight back to Lower Tidmouth Station.
04:10Later that week, the Station Master thanked Percy.
04:14We wouldn't have won our competition without your garden gnomes.
04:18Percy was very proud.
04:21You were right, sir. Naughty gnomes can be lucky after all.
