If Tigers Could Average 2 Runs, They'd Have 100 Wins

00:00They've wasted starting pitching all season.
00:02It's what made last night maybe
00:04refreshing
00:05that they didn't waste
00:07Montero's
00:08gem of a start. Sure. And it's nice what he's done the last
00:10couple outings coming up and giving him a boost.
00:14But that's been the issue all season long. I saw after the
00:16game they won
00:18one nothing
00:19that in games where the Tigers score at least a run
00:23they're 43
00:24and 39
00:26when they produce a single run this season
00:2943 and 39.
00:31So it just takes out the games. They were shut out.
00:32They've been shut out.
00:33I think it's nine times
00:35but then I got to thinking
00:37it's dangerous.
00:40It's how my brain works.
00:42What about games where they score at least two runs?
00:44What's the Tigers record in games where they score at least
00:47two measly runs two or more
00:50John
00:5141
00:53and 26.
00:55That's a 99 round up a hundred win pace.
00:59If they score two
01:01runs or more
01:03they win at a 99 to a hundred win
01:07pace. Now you could interpret that
01:09absurd stat any way you want.
01:12The obvious thing is
01:14they pitched really well this season.
01:16The second takeaway is
01:19Scott Harris should be in sports prison.
01:21How the hell don't they have a couple more bats to truly
01:23capitalize on the pitching that's given them a chance
01:26damn near every outing.
01:29John, how do you interpret that 41 and 26 when they score two
01:32or more runs?
01:35Obviously more offense is going to produce more wins.
01:37There's no question about that,
01:39but
01:40let me ask you this and I'm just playing devil's advocate a
01:44little bit here
01:45in regards to
01:47your take on they should have added those bats.
01:51That's the stat that they have right now with the bats in
01:54hand.
01:56Did you anticipate
01:58because I believe Scott Harris did and I think AJ Hinch did I
02:01think all of Tigers Nation felt like
02:05Spencer Torkelson would be one of the productive bats.
02:08Yeah, it's incredibly fair to ask where would they be if
02:11Torkelson was
02:12close to what he did a year ago.
02:14You know, does he help them get over the two run threshold
02:16more often than not and are they actually in the mix?
02:20It's a fair point, but I would point out that Scott Harris job
02:23is to not hinge his team on one young baseball player, but
02:26rather to populate his lineup with as many quality bats as
02:29possible.
02:30The bats he added
02:31Gio Urshela and Mark Canna
02:34are
02:35dreadful.
02:36The bats that we discussed adding would help this team.
02:39I mean if they added
02:40one to two impact bats,
02:42are they four to five wins better?
02:45Are we talking about this very differently as a team who's
02:47still very much in the wild card race this morning?
02:50So yeah, I look at that stat and it's like it's a great note
02:53that the pitching has kept them in so many ball games,
02:56but it's infuriating to know
02:59what one or two bats could do and maybe some people hear that
03:02stat and think
03:03if one or two bats heat up,
03:05but I think the damage is already done.
03:07I think you can't undo the stretch of baseball that they've
03:09played where they've thrown away a quarter of the games and
03:12I understand your argument about adding more bats, adding
03:15more offense.
03:16Yes, that would have been ideal,
03:19but
03:20you mentioned if you added those bats, would you be four or
03:22five wins better?
03:23If Spencer Torkelson was what he was in the second half of
03:27last season, would you be four or five wins better now as is?
03:31What if you had both?
03:33I'm not going to argue that.
03:34It wasn't like an either-or proposition.
03:35Yes, you'd be better.
03:36But again,
03:37what if you protected Torkelson?
03:38What if you had backup plans?
03:39What if you had depth?
03:41What if you had a lineup that wasn't contingent on
03:44a player who had only one real successful season in the big
03:47leagues?
03:49Yeah, there's a lot of what-ifs that we could play.
03:51But these aren't in hindsight.
03:52These are things we talked about before the year and we have
03:54the team president as of the last month saying that those
03:56were mistakes to add bats.
03:58I can't imagine how anybody, especially someone employed to
04:01run a baseball team, would come out and say that adding those
04:03bats, many of them would have been mistakes.
04:06I don't understand that and that concerns me for the future.
04:09It's one thing if you go, hey,
04:11there's some guys, contractual reasons, some things fell
04:13through,
04:16but to still feel like that was the right course of action
04:18when it's been empirically proven night in and night out,
04:20I worry about the future at that point if that is the
04:23genuine belief that those bats would have been mistakes.
04:26Because I look at that stat and say,
04:28yeah, sure, if the bats heat up,
04:29they could have made noise and still could make noise, but the
04:32damage is already done and they aren't going to add at the
04:34deadline in all likelihood.
04:37John, they're going to sell at the deadline.
04:38So I have a hard time with the idea of
04:41I mean, sure, if they could go on a run and win 10 in a row,
04:44they could really light the world on fire.
04:46I'm not there yet.
04:47I don't see that as well.
04:49I think anybody, I don't think anybody is sitting here this
04:51morning after three wins against the Reds who are a like team
04:54like the Tigers and one off win
04:58against the Guardians that that they're the hot team in Major
05:01League Baseball.
05:02I don't think anybody is going to sit here and tell you that
05:05but if we're going to play the what-if game,
05:07what if Kerry Carpenter didn't get hurt?
05:09What if Spencer Torkelson was even part of what he was last
05:13year?
05:14What if Parker Meadows didn't have that slump?
05:17And now that he's back, it wasn't hurt.
05:19There's I mean, there's there's a lot of what-ifs that you
05:21could play and sure if you had added offense,
05:24what if
05:26is always a part of the conversation.
05:28So those first two what-ifs,
05:30Torkelson and Carpenter,
05:32the answer is JD Martinez.
05:34But again, sorry, Jim.
05:35If you're going down that what-if,
05:38how do we even know that this is a team that JD Martinez if
05:41they had offered him the same contract or even more?
05:44What if he didn't actually want to come to Detroit?
05:48Well, I guess we'll never know because there were no reports
05:50that they offered him a deal
05:52and it's one thing to say we tried.
05:54We wanted to overpay and he wouldn't take our money.
05:56It's another thing where the reports are.
05:57It would have been a mistake.
05:58We didn't try.
06:01So, I mean,
06:02I don't know.
06:05You could shrug, you could do the whole thing,
06:07but I mean, there's just a lot of what-ifs either way.
06:10They've won four in a row.
06:11Chance for five in a row today with Kennemyada on the bump.
06:14Enjoy the moment.
06:14Enjoy the moment, John says.
06:15Where are you guys at?
06:16248-539-9797.
06:18Some of you.
