00:00Blossom Bird goes south.
00:29A Bob Miller picture story with words by Sherry Paul.
00:36Morning came as mornings do, all cold and bright and sunny.
00:41But Blossom Bird saw something new.
00:44Something's very funny.
00:49Where green had been, there now was brown, and all the leaves were falling down.
00:59Some were red and some were gold.
01:02The wind, she said, is getting cold.
01:05These must be the winds of fall.
01:07Soon it will be snowing.
01:09I do not like the fall at all.
01:15Young man, where are you going?
01:19Before it snows, said Little Bird, I must learn how to fly.
01:24For when it snows, birds go, I've heard.
01:27When you go, so will I.
01:29But Blossom said, I will not go.
01:32I won't fly south this year.
01:38You must fly south, said Baby Green.
01:41It's warmer there than here.
01:44Mama says, eat this, eat that.
01:47Rice and bread will make us fat, and pulling worms will make us strong.
01:52I must be strong, the trip is long.
01:59Fly south, said Hedgehog.
02:01Fly south right away.
02:03Yes, Blossom, cried Frog.
02:06You should leave today.
02:09You'll be cold, Turtle said, and hungry, and wet.
02:13When the green leaves turn red, it's south you should get.
02:21What are you saying?
02:22I don't want to go.
02:25This year I am staying.
02:27There may not be snow.
02:29But Blossom, said Hedgehog, the south's warm and dry.
02:34So when cold winter comes, that is where you must fly.
02:41And when cold winter ends and warm spring is here, you'll fly back to your friends
02:47for the rest of the year.
02:52Are you going, Hedgehog?
02:54Will you go south too?
02:56And Turtle and Frog, will they go with you?
03:01Hedgehog said, no, and told Blossom why.
03:05We sleep through the snow.
03:07Besides, we can't fly.
03:13I really do not want to go and leave my friends.
03:17But now I know when winter comes, there may be snow.
03:21So it's goodbye.
03:23It's south I go.
03:25But not today.
03:26I won't go yet.
03:28A week I'll stay.
03:29There's time, I'll bet.
03:35While other birds grew fat and strong, Blossom just grew older.
03:40Oh, Blossom Bird, you're doing wrong.
03:43The days are getting colder.
03:48Each day she looked up to the sky.
03:51She saw the others flying by.
03:54But Blossom did not do a thing.
03:56Blossom did not lift a wing.
04:02Off went Hedgehog for a long winter's sleep.
04:05Off went Frog with a long, easy leap.
04:09And Turtle knew that all would be well.
04:11He'd be warm through the winter in his own cozy shell.
04:15But Blossom still had much to do.
04:18I must get fat and stronger too.
04:21Eating this and eating that, Blossom Bird was getting fat.
04:29And then, by flying all day long, that fat bird's wings got very strong.
04:36Blossom flew back to her nest, so tired she was yawning.
04:41I think I need just one night's rest, and I'll fly south.
04:46In the morning.
04:49Brr, I must be getting old.
04:54I never felt a night so cold.
04:56Well, it's all right for one more night.
04:59Tomorrow I'll be warm.
05:01But what a shame, when morning came.
05:08She woke up in a storm.
05:10I can't fly, said Blossom.
05:13Not in this snow.
05:15I'll wait till it stops, and then I will go.
05:22But this storm wasn't stopping.
05:24The trees growled, the wind howled, and the snow kept right on dropping.
05:35The wind blew Blossom's nest away.
05:38Oh, what a terrible storm.
05:41And now it was snowing day after day.
05:44How would poor Blossom stay warm?
05:50A week went by, or was it two?
05:53Or three?
05:54Or even four?
05:56What should she do?
05:57She couldn't fly, but she could take no more.
06:01This was the worst storm in sixty-three years.
06:05I'll walk through this storm, if I can't fly.
06:09I'll go south where it's warm.
06:11At least I'll try.
06:17Slowly Blossom made her way through snow and wind and frost.
06:21But where she was, she could not say.
06:24Blossom Bird was lost.
06:26She asked a rabbit where to go.
06:29The rabbit said he did not know.
06:35But look at those footprints.
06:36Who made them all?
06:38They cannot be Blossom's, they are too small.
06:42Is a bird like Blossom lost in the snow?
06:46It is a bird, Blossom, a bird that you know.
06:53Blossom knew what she must do.
06:55She would look for that bird till the cold turned her blue.
06:59I must find this bird.
07:01I must keep on trying.
07:04Just then she heard a little bird crying.
07:11Upon my word!
07:13It's the same little bird who passed me while trying his flying.
07:18Little bird, I thought you learned to fly.
07:21But you're still here, now tell me why.
07:28I did learn to fly.
07:29I left with the rest, but they all passed me by.
07:33I was too slow, I guess.
07:36Then along came a storm, and the next day another.
07:40Now I just can't get warm, and I want my mother.
07:47Now don't cry, my dear, we will find your mother.
07:51Aunt Blossom is here, and I'll do something or other.
07:59We'll go south, you and I, through this cold winter weather.
08:03And if we can't fly, we will walk south together.
08:10But what do you know?
08:12Out came the sun.
08:14Tomorrow we go, but first we have fun.
08:22In the morning's first light, Blossom looked to the sky.
08:25It was clear, blue, and bright.
08:28A good day to fly.
08:30Okay, little bird, today we fly to the warm, sunny south, just you and I.
08:36You just have to want to.
08:38You just have to try.
08:40Get ready, get set, fly, little bird, fly.
08:48And what do you know?
08:50It soon was warm.
08:52There was no snow.
08:53There was no storm.
08:55This must be the south, said Blossom Bird.
08:58It can't be any other.
09:00But little bird heard not a word, for now he saw his mother.
09:09A happy mom, a happy dad, a happy little bird, too.
09:13All together in warm, sunny weather.
09:17Thanks to you, Blossom Bird.
