00:00One more acorn.
00:28Early one morning in the city of Washington, D.C., a lively gray squirrel named Earl looked
00:41out of his treehouse door and blinked his eyes.
00:48Winter would soon be here, and Earl knew it was time to go and find the acorns he had
00:53stored away last summer.
00:58Earl scampered out of his treehouse.
01:04The grass in Lafayette Square was nearly covered with a light layer of leaves, and by now the
01:11sun had risen and all the other squirrels were scurrying around to find their own hidden
01:16acorns.
01:21Earl sniffed and scratched and dug until suddenly his tail began to twitch and twirl.
01:27He had found his first acorn of the day.
01:34He turned the acorn around and around, then he packed it into his cheek.
01:39Soon he was ready to search for more tasty treasures.
01:42Within a short while, he had found three more acorns.
01:46Earl's cheeks were full.
01:48It was time to bring his acorns home.
01:51Away he raced to his treehouse.
01:56Now you see why Earl needed to hurry.
01:59He had a hungry, furry family to feed.
02:02Thank you, Papa, said his older son, Hickory.
02:05Thank you, Papa, said his younger son, Philbert.
02:09Ch-ch-ch, said his baby daughter, Hazel, who was too little to talk.
02:14Well done, my dear, said their mother.
02:20Down the tree, Earl climbed again to search for more acorns.
02:28Then all at once, he sat up on his haunches and looked around.
02:32He thought to himself, I wonder now, where did I hide that great big acorn last summer?
02:43Earl ran over to the edge of the sidewalk.
02:46This was the right direction, wasn't it?
02:49Then he remembered.
02:50He had hidden the big acorn on the other side of this wide avenue.
02:55Today, the street was filled with cars and trucks and people riding bicycles.
03:01Could Earl make it across safely?
03:07He looked left.
03:08He looked right.
03:09Then he looked left again.
03:11His tail twitched and twirled.
03:14Across the avenue, he dashed like a furry flash.
03:21Once on the other side, Earl hesitated.
03:24People were unfurling colorful flags and tying them to the lampposts.
03:29Even a squirrel could tell that a very special celebration was happening that day.
03:37But Earl had important things to do.
03:40He had a hungry furry family to feed.
03:43And without waiting, he ran through an open gate, which is something not every visitor
03:48can do, you may be certain.
03:54Earl bounded straight toward the Washington Monument.
04:00The area around the monument was very crowded.
04:04What are all these people doing?
04:06Earl wondered.
04:07Are they looking for acorns, too?
04:10Earl searched and searched, dodging men in big work boots and women in shiny, sharp shoes.
04:17But nowhere in all this space could he find a trace of his old tracks or the scent of
04:22an acorn.
04:27While he was busily sniffing, he heard the gleeful voices of boys and girls.
04:33Wherever there are children, Earl knew something good was bound to happen.
04:37Come along now, boys and girls.
04:39Finish up.
04:40It's time to get ready, their teacher called.
04:43The children were all bent over, digging in the ground.
04:47Maybe they are looking for acorns, too, thought Earl.
04:55Then one of the children did find an acorn, Earl's acorn.
05:00It was just the one he'd been searching for.
05:03Before the boy could pick it up, Earl raced over.
05:06His tail twitched and twirled.
05:09Do you want this acorn? asked the boy.
05:11That's okay.
05:12You can have it.
05:13Well, I'm glad to hear it, thought Earl, since it was my acorn to begin with.
05:23Just then, Earl heard a shrill voice.
05:26When teachers really mean it, they can get loud.
05:30Hurry along.
05:31We are leaving right now.
05:33Good luck, the boy said to Earl.
05:35I have to go.
05:37Maybe we'll see each other again one day.
05:39Then off he ran to join the rest of his class.
05:46Earl bounded out through the gate and ran until he came to the big street.
05:51But look!
05:52The avenue was full of people and floats.
05:55It was a parade.
05:57I will never get across now, he thought.
06:04Earl climbed a tree to see how long the parade was, and then he scampered along a branch
06:09overlooking the street.
06:11Oh, no!
06:13It goes on forever, Earl thought.
06:16But just then, he saw someone who looked familiar.
06:23Now Earl knew just what to do.
06:33After a short rest to catch his breath, Earl bounded home to his family.
06:38He took the big acorn out of his mouth and said,
06:41Look what I brought back for you.
06:43Thank you, Papa, said his older son, Hickory.
06:46Thank you, Papa, said his younger son, Filbert.
06:51Said his baby daughter, Hazel, who was too little to talk.
06:55Well done, my dear, said their mother.
