10:20and watched it make an arc of flame.

10:35It was like spending the summer in a cement mixer.

14:26Finally, I realized that the shooting had stopped.
14:29Then I heard footsteps down the fire escape.
14:32I raced to the window just as some guy reached the yard below.
14:35At the edge of the yard, a girl huddled against a fence
14:37trying to keep out of range of the street lamp.
14:39It was wasting her time, though.
14:41Even from where I stood, I recognized her as Ruthie,
14:44the little sweetheart I'd met in the alley earlier in the evening.
14:47As I watched, the guy on the fire escape joined her.
14:50He turned out to be Ralph, the happy-go-lucky chap
14:53who'd tried to dropkick my head into the Gulf of Mexico.
14:56They hurried away.
14:58Then I remembered George Morrison.

17:37I went to the public library and got out all the old newspaper files.

17:43but Joe Blake's name was scattered through the crime news like confetti.

17:50One picture showed him and Ruthie smiling at each other across a nightclub table.
