00:00Edward is the same color as Thomas and the same size as James.
00:11He can pull carriages and push trucks.
00:20And he often works as a back engine.
00:24But Edward is old and not as strong as the other engines,
00:29so sometimes Edward feels left out.
00:35The Duke and Duchess of Boxford came to visit their new summer house.
00:40They came on their own private engine called Spencer.
00:47Spencer is big and silver and very fast.
00:54When Spencer pulled into Knapford, his driver had exciting news for him.
01:01You have beaten Gordon's record, he said.
01:06Of course, boasted Spencer. I'm faster and finer than all the engines on Sodor put together.
01:13The Fat Controller's engines were very cross.
01:17Spencer's just a big silver show-off, sniffed Gordon, and everyone agreed.
01:24The Fat Controller spoke to the engines.
01:27Spencer will take the Duke and Duchess to their summer house.
01:31Another engine will take their furniture.
01:34The Fat Controller's engines saw the chance for a race.
01:38Please, sir, said Thomas, Percy, Gordon and James all together. May I go?
01:43You all have other work to do, boomed the Fat Controller.
01:48Edward will take the furniture.
01:50James and Gordon groaned.
01:53Fancy sending a back engine to do an express engine's job, sniffed Gordon.
01:59He'll lose the race and let the old railway down, said James.
02:04Thomas and Percy were cross. Edward was their friend.
02:09Spencer has a bigger boiler, said Thomas, but that just means more hot air.
02:15An honest steamie can beat a pouty puffer any day, added Percy.
02:20Edward set off, slow and steady.
02:25We'll do my best, we'll do my best, he puffed.
02:29Spencer set off and quickly passed Edward.
02:35I've won already, he boasted.
02:39And with a whoosh, he was gone.
02:49Edward came to the bottom of a steep hill.
02:52The freight was heavy and he felt very tired.
03:03He huffed and he puffed and was soon at the top.
03:12He could see Spencer in the distance and set chase at once.
03:17Edward raced down the hill.
03:21Spencer stopped at Wellsworth Station.
03:25The Duke and Duchess wanted to buy some tea and cakes from the refreshment lady.
03:30Edward teetered into view.
03:33Hurry up, old boy, laughed Spencer.
03:36Can't have you finishing too far behind me.
03:39Edward wished he could help.
03:41But the stationmaster and the porters had heard about the race.
03:45Hooray for Edward, they cheered.
03:48Edward picked up steam and proudly puffed past Spencer.
03:54But then, the Duke and Duchess finished their tea.
03:58And Spencer was off in a flash.
04:01He roared past Edward.
04:04Finally, he reached the top of the hill.
04:08He roared past Edward.
04:11Fastest and best, fastest and best, he chirruped.
04:16Edward was nearly out of puff.
04:21The furniture felt heavier than ever.
04:29Up ahead, Spencer had to stop.
04:33The Duke wanted to take some photographs of the countryside.
04:40The Duke set up his camera.
04:43Spencer closed his eyes.
04:46Nothing to worry about, he said lazily.
04:53Gordon was returning to Brendam Docks.
04:56He passed Spencer and knew Edward must be losing the race.
04:59Edward is a waste of steam, he sniffed.
05:03But when Gordon passed Edward and saw how hard he was trying,
05:07he felt bad about what he had said.
05:10Well done, Edward, he called.
05:13You are a credit to the railway.
05:16Edward was so happy, his boiler tingled.
05:19He found puff he never knew he had.
05:24The Duke and Duchess had finished their tea.
05:27The Duke and Duchess had finished taking photographs and were back on board.
05:33Time to go, said his driver and rang the bell.
05:37But nothing happened.
05:40Spencer was dreaming of victory.
05:43He didn't hear the bell.
05:45And he didn't hear Edward puffing past him.
05:49Spencer's driver rang the bell again.
05:53When Spencer finally opened his eyes,
05:56he could see Edward heading towards the summer house.
06:00Nearly there, nearly there, he gasped.
06:05Spencer took off as fast as he could.
06:11But as he reached the siding, his driver ordered him to slow down.
06:15These are old tracks and you are a very heavy engine, he said.
06:19You must go slowly.
06:20Spencer had no choice.
06:23He had to slow down.
06:25And he trundled slowly down the siding.
06:29With every click and every clack, he knew that he had lost the race.
06:34Edward puffed towards the summer house.
06:38I've won, he gasped. I did it.
06:42Edward felt like a really useful engine.
06:46Hooray, I've won, he gasped.
06:50He cheered loudly.
06:52Edward felt like the pride of the Sodor Railway.
06:57And he was right.
