00:00Percy was working in the coal mines. He was feeling bored and lonely with only the silly trucks for company.
00:08Cheer up, Percy, said his driver. The Fat Controller has told me that we must be here again tomorrow.
00:14We've just got to make the best of a bad situation.
00:17I'll try, sir, sighed Percy.
00:19Next morning, Percy puffed back to the coal mines. When he arrived, the trucks started teasing him.
00:25Percy, Percy, green and small, he's no use to us at all. Around the yards he'll puff and blow, but on the hills he's oh so slow.
00:32Be quiet!
00:35Then, he took the trucks to the coal hopper to be loaded up.
00:40Percy still felt glum, but said nothing as he puffed up the steep incline to the yards at the top of the hill.
00:48He parked his trucks and then set off back down to the mines.
00:55Not even the cheerful sight of Bertie the Bus could bring a smile to Percy's face.
01:00What's the matter, Percy? asked Bertie.
01:02Nothing exciting ever happens, that's the matter, sighed Percy.
01:06It's just coal, coal, coal and trucks, trucks, trucks. I'm bored, bored, bored.
01:12Excitement is surprising, observed Bertie. You never know when it'll happen, otherwise it wouldn't be exciting. Tootle-peep!
01:20It would be surprising if something surprising happened, muttered Percy.
01:25Later, he stopped by the water tower for a drink.
01:28Hello, Percy, how are things? asked Toby.
01:31Boring, replied Percy.
01:33Well, why not have a few fast spins on the turntable? You'll like that, said Toby.
01:38I think I just feel giddy.
01:40Percy's driver interrupted.
01:42Stop gossiping, you two.
01:44Cheer up, Percy, you'll soon know more about trucks than any other engine.
01:48That'll be exciting, called Toby.
01:51The trucks were still grumbling, and there was more of them than ever.
01:55You're much too small to pull all of us. We want another engine or we'll be struggling up the hill all night.
02:00All night, all right, you can puff and blow, but on that hill you're still too slow.
02:07S-s-s-slow yourself, stuttered Percy.
02:10Temper, temper, giggled the trucks.
02:13Percy decided just to carry on.
02:20Go to it, Percy, shouted the driver as they started to climb the hill.
02:25The trucks were still joking.
02:27Too slow, more power, here all night, tomorrow too.
02:31Be quiet, said Percy angrily.
02:34Then there was trouble.
02:37A coupling broke.
02:39Surprise, surprise, catch us if you can.
02:43Oh, no, cried Percy.
02:59Percy's driver told the signalman,
03:01and the yard foreman told the fat controller what was happening.
03:04They're heading for the big hill. It'll slow them down, but they may roll back again.
03:08Right into the village, said the foreman.
03:10Then we'll just have to stop them, won't we, said Sir Topham Hatt firmly.
03:14The chase was on.
03:32As they approached the hill, they overtook the trucks.
03:36The fat controller and Bertie screeched to a halt and waited for them near the top.
03:54The hill slowed the trucks right down to a standstill.
03:58Then the men quickly put wooden blocks behind their wheels so they couldn't roll backwards.
04:03The trucks were now secured.
04:09Just then, Percy arrived.
04:13Well, what did you think of that, joked Bertie?
04:16A good chase is always exciting.
04:18It certainly was a surprise, decided Percy.
04:20And you were right, Bertie.
04:22A really useful engine should never be left behind.
04:25And you were right, Bertie.
04:27A really useful engine should never be surprised by surprise.
