00:00:19All right, another episode of the Cedric Maxwell Podcast.
00:00:21Another special guest with us.
00:00:23I am Joseph Pavone.
00:00:24He is Cedric Maxwell.
00:00:25We got Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe joining us once again.
00:00:30Off-season edition.
00:00:31Well, I guess it's sort of a free agency.
00:00:34You got the NBA draft to recap, but how you been?
00:00:37I mean, the last two weeks, you just covered a championship team for the first time.
00:00:40How's everything?
00:00:41You got a new book.
00:00:42We'll get into that in a little bit, but how's everything been, man?
00:00:45Oh, it's been good.
00:00:46It's been good.
00:00:47It was cool to see, you know, them finally get over the top.
00:00:51We ain't got to talk about that no more.
00:00:54Literally, I've been in the city 15 years and they've been, except for one year,
00:00:58trying to get a championship and to see them get over the top and finally get it done and
00:01:04get the monkey off their back.
00:01:05I mean, that was, it was cool to see.
00:01:07And then the parade.
00:01:08My friend, it's not, you know, this is a black show.
00:01:12We don't use no terms like getting the monkey off your back.
00:01:19Get the anvil off your back.
00:01:20All right, get the anvil off your back.
00:01:22Thank you.
00:01:23Like Roadrunner.
00:01:25You got to look that up, Joe Sweats, before your time.
00:01:26Yeah, that is, man.
00:01:28I don't know that one.
00:01:30But yeah, I mean, it was good.
00:01:32It was good for them to get over the top.
00:01:34The parade was awesome.
00:01:35Like I didn't, I've never been to a parade before in terms of like a team celebrating
00:01:42and just to see all the types of people out that came out that love the Celtics.
00:01:47You know, people think that, I mean, obviously, Max, I mean,
00:01:50people watched your days and they saw a number of white folks at the Boston Garden and thought
00:01:56those are the only people, but there's so many people of color, so many from everywhere
00:02:01who love the Celtics, man.
00:02:03I mean, it's crazy.
00:02:04And it was just to see all them out that day on that Friday, all shapes and sizes, colors,
00:02:13ages from two to 92, you know, I mean, that was like, wow, Boston really showed the best
00:02:19of itself.
00:02:21And so it was cool.
00:02:23It was cool to see, you know, them finally, you know what I said?
00:02:25Like people think that I like the team, that they're good guys.
00:02:30I'm good with Joe.
00:02:32Me and Joe are great at this point.
00:02:34You know, that's serious, Max.
00:02:38Don't give me that look.
00:02:42Yeah, Max, explain that look.
00:02:44We can get to the scowl perk thing in a minute if you want.
00:02:48Oh, yeah, we can do that for sure.
00:02:50But yeah, I mean, it was awesome.
00:02:53It's been a cool two weeks to just kind of watch it.
00:02:56Now, as you see, other teams are ramping up.
00:03:01Meanwhile, I'm watching ESPN News here and they got two brothers doing cornhole.
00:03:08So I don't know what to say about that, Max.
00:03:14On a Sunday, huh?
00:03:15On a Sunday, man.
00:03:16Like, what happened?
00:03:19That's why all the French folks is getting drafted higher than us at hoops.
00:03:23Because, bro, you know, you're playing cornhole.
00:03:25Like, I don't know.
00:03:29Yeah, here's one of the crazy things we think about, though.
00:03:32And, you know, I know we all laugh.
00:03:34Two brothers playing cornhole.
00:03:35I don't know what to say.
00:03:36I've never seen that, man.
00:03:37I got to turn that off.
00:03:38I guess we've officially overcome, man.
00:03:40Yeah.
00:03:41Well, here's the thing I'll say about what you're talking about.
00:03:46People, you know, that you see all kind of white folks in the audience.
00:03:52Well, most Black people can't afford to go in and get tickets at the garden.
00:03:56Yeah, they definitely couldn't afford it 40 years ago.
00:03:58I mean, and now you're talking about those tickets were,
00:04:01you know, to get in the building was $3,000 and $4,000 a seat.
00:04:05Yeah, the 300 section, I heard it was like $1,200.
00:04:09Yes, yeah, that was the highest.
00:04:12The 300 section, I heard the lowest was $1,200.
00:04:16Yeah, for free.
00:04:18People can't afford it.
00:04:20Color is like, you know, that's why they had to be out in the streets where it was free.
00:04:27And they can celebrate their team and they got behind their team.
00:04:31But it was such a beautiful day.
00:04:34And, you know, just the environment was just crazy good.
00:04:40You know, what I did like about Boston,
00:04:42the fact that it did not seem like other cities had violence to go along with the parade.
00:04:46Yeah.
00:04:47It was good.
00:04:48And it was really cool.
00:04:50I'm like you, though.
00:04:52I probably more than you and Joe Swait wanted to see them win this series because championship
00:04:59because I got tired of all these damn haters who've been around.
00:05:03I mean, you look at ESPN.
00:05:05I think nine out of 12 reporters said the parade was going to be in Dallas.
00:05:10And it was not 17.
00:05:12But like, yeah, I mean, I love her.
00:05:15But Park was like, oh, I got this.
00:05:16I got Dallas winning games three and four.
00:05:18Like, and I'm not saying, you know, everybody has a perspective.
00:05:21And I respect her a hell of a lot.
00:05:23But I just think they thought, oh, wait.
00:05:26Well, wait till they get to Luca and Kyrie.
00:05:28All that.
00:05:29I don't think the road to the finals was respected.
00:05:32Right.
00:05:33I think they understand they beat Miami without Jimmy Butler.
00:05:37They beat Cleveland last couple of games on Donovan Mitchell.
00:05:41Indiana didn't have Halliburton, but they were able to win both.
00:05:46I mean, but this team had proven all year.
00:05:50It was the best.
00:05:52And you know, here's one of the things that happened, though.
00:05:55You think about those games and we set the Suffolks back and made people think differently
00:06:00was when the Suffolks lost to the Lakers in Boston with no LeBron and no A.D.
00:06:06Those kind of games put other things.
00:06:09And people just didn't say, well, you know, maybe this played a bad game.
00:06:13I think that was it with the Suffolks is that and the biggest narrative,
00:06:17which was untrue, was that everybody said all the national people,
00:06:21the best player on in this series right now is Luca.
00:06:25And we found out it wasn't.
00:06:27It was Tatum and Brown by a large, large one.
00:06:31I'm not sure right now if Luca could keep me, you or Gary in front of him right now.
00:06:37We were dribbling down the court.
00:06:38I just don't think he could.
00:06:41What do you think he was?
00:06:42Yeah, it was so bad.
00:06:44Yeah, it was some record.
00:06:46They were saying they said he got blown by 65 percent of the time.
00:06:51I mean, that doesn't that that is just crazy to think of.
00:06:54That means your effort is lacking or you can't move your feet.
00:06:58But if you're such a great player, you should be able to at least stay in front of a guy.
00:07:04And because Brown just ran rough, rough shot.
00:07:08And I think the biggest narrative I've seen here lately is that what people want to pick
00:07:12at is that, oh, you know what?
00:07:15Jalen Brown shouldn't have got the MVP.
00:07:17He shouldn't maintain them.
00:07:19People just want to stir shit up with this team when I think they were just happy.
00:07:24Tatum was just genuinely happy to be a champion, to be a champion.
00:07:29They get that shit off his back was the biggest thing that people looked at.
00:07:33And now they can go out and play next year.
00:07:36I talked to Michael Felker like you're on the show, and he was trying to cause those same
00:07:41waves.
00:07:42And well, Jalen Brown, Jason Tatum didn't get the MVP meat left on the bone for him.
00:07:49And Brown didn't.
00:07:50I said, and then he asked me, so what do you think Max is going to make the Celtics so
00:07:55they're not complacent?
00:07:56I said, exactly what you said.
00:07:58Tatum wasn't the MVP.
00:08:00Brown was.
00:08:01Brown wasn't the all pro this year.
00:08:04So you had to have those things.
00:08:06Then there's meat left on the bone that they can go out and they can try to play.
00:08:10Joe Mizzoula has convinced people, not us, convinced people that he's a hell of a coach.
00:08:16And he is.
00:08:17He's one of the best coaches right now in the National Basketball Association.
00:08:21And all these other guys are going to get their money.
00:08:24And the biggest thing about it, when people say, well, how about Denver?
00:08:28Celtics are bringing back damn near their entire core.
00:08:31And because of that, there's going to be continuity like Denver.
00:08:34People don't realize how good Jeff Green was with those guys or Bruce Brown was good in
00:08:40Denver.
00:08:42Celtics don't have that problem.
00:08:44And I'm not sure.
00:08:45I'm sure you'll know better than me that there are going to be some players out there who
00:08:49haven't won a ring that say, shit, I want to play with the Celtics now.
00:08:53I want to win one.
00:08:55I want to go in a Blake Griffin type guy who is out there who hasn't done whatever, but
00:09:00said, look, damn, I want to win with these guys.
00:09:03So I think it's easier right now for Brad Stevens, who did a fantastic job, to go out
00:09:09and recruit and try to get somebody else.
00:09:11Yeah, I think the hottest team is the team that just won a championship.
00:09:17And so although the Celtics are limited with their financial, they can only offer minimum
00:09:21deals.
00:09:22Remember, the market is going to squeak.
00:09:24There's no middle class anymore, pretty much.
00:09:26When the market begins and all the Paul Georges and James Hardens and all these guys sign,
00:09:31there's going to be a bunch of brothers left out who are going to be jumping, trying to
00:09:36jump, catch onto a ship and not drown and not be getting some training camp invites.
00:09:43And they're going to take that minimum money from the Celtics, especially knowing, one,
00:09:48if you're a big man, you can probably play because the Celtics are going to need some
00:09:51help in the middle.
00:09:52With poor Zingas being out, Warford being on his age 38 now.
00:09:58We don't know about Cornette and Tillman, whether they'll be back.
00:10:00They can try to bring both of those guys back.
00:10:03But if you're coming in, you're going to get a chance to play.
00:10:06They got two draft picks who might be able to play.
00:10:09It's good.
00:10:10They've solidified their team to make more than one run.
00:10:13That's the thing.
00:10:14And obviously, Max, you know more than anybody about, one, trying to repeat.
00:10:20It's hard as hell.
00:10:21Because obviously, 81, you guys came back, I'm sure, in 82 and thought, oh, it's us.
00:10:25And you guys lost to Philadelphia because Philly was coming after you.
00:10:30But just having that eye of the tiger, that desire.
00:10:34And I have full confidence in Missoula with his different type of methods of motivation
00:10:40that he's going to get those guys ready to go to come back as opposed to
00:10:47spending the summer hanging out, partying.
00:10:49Obviously, Jason and Drew got the Olympics.
00:10:52I don't see Jalen being on some three-month vacation and not work.
00:10:57They're going to come back hungry.
00:11:00Because now you're talking about making history.
00:11:01Now you're talking about being one of the great eras of the Celtic history.
00:11:05Now you're on a championship.
00:11:07So you're equal with 08.
00:11:09But now there's a chance to be better than 08.
00:11:1208 couldn't win that second title.
00:11:14They got hurt in 09.
00:11:16They lost in game seven in 2010.
00:11:18And then age kind of kicked in.
00:11:20But now you've got a chance to win two and three years, three and four years, back to back.
00:11:25You've got a chance to make some history here.
00:11:28The Celtics haven't gone back to back since the 60s.
00:11:32You have a chance to do something special.
00:11:34And that's the thing, I think, like you said, Max.
00:11:37They've got the core back.
00:11:40They could probably use another old head, another professional guy who's going to come in,
00:11:44maybe take less money, and just be like, just wants to be a part of it.
00:11:48That's the 08 team.
00:11:51PJ Brown and San Jose.
00:11:52Those guys are like, I'm trying to get a chip.
00:11:54And they see now, Boston's the place to do that.
00:12:00I'm just trying to look at this drink right here, because I need to tip this up.
00:12:03Yeah, Dr. Pepper, man.
00:12:05Yo, Max loves that shit, Gary.
00:12:08He loves it.
00:12:08I'm trying to give this to Gary after he talked so kumbaya about him and the coach.
00:12:15I mean, these two guys have been like, what is it, oil and whatever?
00:12:22Tom and Jerry.
00:12:25Sometimes I'll see a question being asked, and I hear the question being asked by Gary,
00:12:31and I'm like, ah, shit.
00:12:33Here we go.
00:12:34Here we go.
00:12:36He can't give you a straight answer.
00:12:38I mean, so many times you've given Joe Mazzulla a layup, going, so Joe, your team is really
00:12:44playing well, and dah, dah, dah.
00:12:45And Joe will look at you right now and going, well, what do you think about Jesus Christ?
00:12:50Yeah.
00:12:53That's not that far off.
00:12:54That is not that far off.
00:12:56That's our friend Vince Goodwater asked about him being a Black coach.
00:13:00When I heard that question, I cringed.
00:13:04I was like, because here's the thing about the finals.
00:13:10All the national reporters got a chance to see Joe Mazzulla live, in person.
00:13:18Joe Mazzulla's great defense.
00:13:19You've been dealing with all the time.
00:13:20Exactly.
00:13:22Everybody, and I said, and I looked at the national reporters.
00:13:25He was in peak form.
00:13:26Y'all thought it was me.
00:13:27Y'all thought it was me.
00:13:30Now you know.
00:13:31Now you know what's happening.
00:13:33Yo, for real, Gary's looking around the room like, yo, imagine 82 games of this.
00:13:36Yeah, y'all see what I'm dealing with?
00:13:38All right.
00:13:39Y'all see what I'm talking about now?
00:13:41Oh, Gary already started shit.
00:13:42No, no.
00:13:46Gary was the only one smiling at that point, looking around like.
00:13:49I was laughing to have the question.
00:13:51I was laughing.
00:13:52I was like, oh, I know he ain't going to answer this.
00:13:56Let me listen and see what he says.
00:13:57Yeah, that was a layup.
00:13:59Two black coaches have come together.
00:14:02This is the time to play your black card.
00:14:05For real.
00:14:06You're going to move the line.
00:14:09No, I'm not joking.
00:14:11In the mix, two black head coaches just got fired, too.
00:14:15It was a very relevant question.
00:14:16It wasn't like it came out of nowhere.
00:14:19This stuff has been talked about every offseason.
00:14:22I don't know what the hell you're talking about.
00:14:24How many of them are Christians?
00:14:26I was like, yep.
00:14:27And then everybody looked at me.
00:14:29And I was like, see, y'all thinking it was me.
00:14:33Y'all thought I was crazy, right?
00:14:35Y'all thought I was a hard-driving reporter.
00:14:37Oh, Gary doesn't like the team.
00:14:40Gary's trying to build a narrative.
00:14:43I was like, you see this dude?
00:14:45You see this dude?
00:14:46Go ahead, guys.
00:14:47Go ahead.
00:14:48Go ahead.
00:14:49Go ahead.
00:14:50Ask another one.
00:14:50Who's next?
00:14:51You see, I didn't start no stuff during the finals.
00:14:55It's your turn to ask the question.
00:14:57Gary said, you know what?
00:14:58I'm going to defer to somebody else.
00:15:00Yep, I'm going to let them.
00:15:01Y'all do this.
00:15:02You go ahead.
00:15:03Go ahead.
00:15:04Go ahead, Malika.
00:15:06You go ahead and ask somebody else.
00:15:08You see?
00:15:09There was nothing that happened between me and him in the finals.
00:15:11Like, no, no.
00:15:13I know what he's going to say.
00:15:14Nope.
00:15:16Did you get a chance?
00:15:18Did you guys do like a last embrace or something?
00:15:20When's the last time you did you speak to him before the parade?
00:15:22When was the last time you guys got that good?
00:15:23I spoke to him the day after the parade.
00:15:24We had a great conversation.
00:15:26The day after the parade, I called him.
00:15:29I texted him because I didn't get a chance to really, after everything,
00:15:33he had so many people around him and everyone trying to do one-on-one interviews.
00:15:37I didn't get a chance to pull him aside.
00:15:39But I did text him the morning after and said congratulations to him.
00:15:43And then we had a good conversation the day after the parade.
00:15:47So, yeah, I said, like, it was, I'm happy for him.
00:15:51Second youngest coach behind Bill Russell to win a championship.
00:15:55And all what he did worked.
00:15:57And I think he's learned a lot on the way.
00:15:59I think him having a great staff around him helped.
00:16:03Him trusting his players, being a little bit more open-minded.
00:16:07And, you know, you just got to, you got to think now, you know,
00:16:11is Joe going to be one of those guys that coaches probably 20 years?
00:16:14I don't know if he's, I don't know what the intensity that he has,
00:16:17that he'll be able to do this for a long, long time.
00:16:20I think he's really intense, but he's only going to get better.
00:16:24So I respect him.
00:16:26I said, I have much respect for Joe Mazula.
00:16:28He's an unusual guy.
00:16:29I think everybody saw that.
00:16:31And I said, you didn't see me doing nothing during the finals.
00:16:34I was, I was, I was a good guy.
00:16:36I stayed my, my, like Max, I stayed out of my business.
00:16:39I stayed, I stayed out of grown folk business.
00:16:41I was like, y'all want them big feature questions, you want to ask them?
00:16:48And then the dude asked him about being half Italian.
00:16:50He didn't bite on that either.
00:16:51He said, I don't care if we can rebound and get spacing on the floor.
00:16:58I don't care what you are.
00:16:59I'll be a, you know, whatever.
00:17:01Like, like, I was like, I don't care what you are.
00:17:04Like, like I was like, see, like y'all think it's me.

00:18:30So we did think it, we did think it was him.
00:18:36When we, you know, we wanted me and Gary,
00:18:38me and just wanted to pull your black card after we saw you on TV,
00:18:42because you lost some of your blackness there for a minute.
00:18:45The way you were talking.
00:18:49That's not what I said, but that's Max.
00:18:53No, no, I didn't.
00:18:54I wasn't trying to say no.
00:18:55I wouldn't try to take your black card, man.
00:18:56I just think it's funny how,
00:18:58when you, when you, when you with us, you just, you just, you know,
00:19:01you're more you, you're more you, you're more loose, right?
00:19:04Yeah.
00:19:04Oh, what's that?
00:19:06Oh, well, then we got on the other shows.
00:19:08Like, well, I tell you what a really great job and I'm like shaking your hand.
00:19:16I'm like, what's wrong with this brother?
00:19:18But then with us, he's like, man, he's a weird dude, man.
00:19:21I don't know.
00:19:22I don't know what to say.
00:19:24Yeah, you ain't right, man.
00:19:25But you know what?
00:19:26But this is, you know, I ain't coached, man.
00:19:30I'm versatile, man.
00:19:32Yeah, that's a better way to put it.
00:19:33Right, right.
00:19:33This is what we have to go through as black reporters.
00:19:37We have to go through, especially dealing with our own.
00:19:42And we also have to go deal in a more of a white environment.
00:19:46And so our diction, everything does change because you're fitting into that system.
00:19:52Whereas when you're talking to us, it's like, yo, what's up, man?
00:19:57But that's not the way you get invited back to make that $300 that you went in and made on,
00:20:03you know, NBC.
00:20:04What you trying to say?
00:20:06Why you calling my money out, man?
00:20:08Yeah, right.
00:20:11Where'd you get that figure from?
00:20:12What are you talking about?
00:20:14Because I made it.
00:20:16Why you calling out my monies, man?
00:20:19I got my hands on my papers, man.
00:20:26If you come into the studio, you make $300.
00:20:30If they have, we don't know how much I, we don't know, man.
00:20:33We assume $200 is X amount.
00:20:39Big money.
00:20:40X amount of dollars.
00:20:48Did we ask you what you get when you were in the Yamacon yet?
00:20:52Oh, man.
00:20:53That's a whole nother check.
00:20:55Oh, that's another story.
00:20:56Okay, nevermind.
00:20:57Because you want to go, you want to be invited back.
00:20:59I'll tell you one thing, man.
00:21:01Okay.
00:21:02I've been invited to Jewish temples.
00:21:05They're very inviting.
00:21:07It's great.
00:21:09Provide some context, please.
00:21:10Because people don't know.
00:21:11Also, if any other religion invites me to speak, I am there.
00:21:17Just where you see them hands.
00:21:18Protestant, Mormon, Baptist, Catholic.
00:21:25If they invite me to speak, I will speak at any church.
00:21:28Don't act like it's just a Jewish temple.
00:21:31There's Jewish, one in Needham and one in, I want to say,
00:21:35God, I can't remember where it was a few years ago.
00:21:38It was on the north side.
00:21:39I think Peabody invited me and I spoke.
00:21:43So, anytime.
00:21:45Hold on, real quick.
00:21:47Only on the Central Massive Podcast will Gary have to explain this to everyone.
00:21:51I'm just saying, I ain't biased toward nobody.
00:21:54I'm more than any church.
00:21:56We want you to tell the story.
00:21:57It's like, damn, man, I need to get paid now.
00:21:59Now, we need you to volunteer your time to come into our place and do something.
00:22:05I'll do that for, yeah, I'll do that.
00:22:07No, no, no, no, no.
00:22:09No, don't do that.
00:22:10No, Max.
00:22:10No, no, that's his advice.
00:22:12Yeah, that's his advice.
00:22:12You're causing me problems.
00:22:13When you say, Gary doesn't ask for money, but I tell you what, Max is asking for money
00:22:19when he goes to Mass.
00:22:20Well, you're a champion.
00:22:21You're a retired member.
00:22:24It's like when we go to the garden, you get free reign in the family room to get all the
00:22:30nice, fresh chicken fingers and wings that we can't get.
00:22:33No, that's a good point.
00:22:35That is your friend.
00:22:36You'd be pulling up with those.
00:22:38You'd be pulling up with the nice, fresh, fried chicken wings.
00:22:41Now, he's putting my business out.
00:22:43I'm just kidding.
00:22:44I'm telling you, he's putting my business, or what I'm doing, third for you.
00:22:50You were talking about his paper earlier.
00:22:53Oh, I'm number 31.
00:22:54That's who I am.
00:22:55I'm number 31.
00:22:57You see that?
00:22:59Go out to the court and look up, and when you see 31, yeah, you see my, yeah, that's
00:23:04who I be doing.
00:23:05Let me do it like it's supposed to be done.
00:23:08For the woman back there in the back who didn't know who I am, I'm Rick James, man.
00:23:14Yeah, that's pretty much what you said, pretty much.
00:23:16I'm 31.
00:23:17What?
00:23:18I'm number 31.
00:23:19All right.
00:23:20Well, look it up.
00:23:20Google it.
00:23:22Well, Gary, give us the lowdown on this whole Kendrick Perkins at the Southern's Parade.
00:23:26What was it?
00:23:27Did he not get the invite?
00:23:28Is he out of the group text?
00:23:30Like, what's the, like, is this the Boston radio trying to start things when he had a,
00:23:36they had a perk on and he was talking about he had a boner pick with Scout, but you were
00:23:41there.
00:23:41What was going on?
00:23:42Okay, so it sounded like, okay, they had an O-8 duck boat.
00:23:48They had an O-8 boat, right?
00:23:49Duck boat, right?
00:23:50The Bear Trophy, Pierce came out, Eddie House.
00:23:54I think Cassell was on that because-
00:23:55Cassell was on there, yeah.
00:23:57I think Leon Poe.
00:23:58Leon Poe.
00:23:59Four members of the 15 or whatever, right?
00:24:02And even though, and you saw, I mean, you got the great interview with Ray Allen.
00:24:06He went to game five, like, on the day.
00:24:09Really cool moment.
00:24:10Like, he just, I mean, he was just like, I didn't see, I was like, damn, Ray was at the
00:24:14game.
00:24:14Like, so, but I think, so what was it?
00:24:19Scout, Paul, Leon, Eddie.
00:24:24So five members of the team.
00:24:26And I guess they asked Scout, when Park was invited, and he's like, well, I don't think
00:24:31he would be invited and whatever.
00:24:34And there's some tension now, there's some stuff, because obviously the quote of him
00:24:40calling Missoula a bird brain, not kind of a bird brain.
00:24:44That's a tough quote, right?
00:24:46That was a, it was a very critical quote.
00:24:49I think it was a few months ago.
00:24:50Actually, they lost to Denver at home.
00:24:53It was like the home loss to Denver, and he went in on Missoula.
00:24:58Okay.
00:24:59So people didn't forget it.
00:25:01Yeah.
00:25:01So Scout kind of threw in the atmosphere that there was some tension between Park and the
00:25:07organization, and Park is like, hold up.
00:25:10First of all, keep my name out of your mouth.
00:25:12Secondly, it's not like I got invited or they invited the whole 08 team.
00:25:18I don't know how this person did it.
00:25:20I'm sure if some members of, if Garnett was like, hey, I want to be on the duck boat,
00:25:26they would, of course, brought him on.
00:25:28And I think with Pierce, Pierce is in Boston a lot more than Garnett or any of the 08 team.
00:25:35House works for NBC Sports Boston.
00:25:37I know he lives in Phoenix, but I think House comes here a lot too.
00:25:42Scal, of course.
00:25:43And then Leon Paul works for the organization.
00:25:46So it's not easy.
00:25:47So I don't think there was some like 15 invites where Rondo and Gabe Pruitt and.
00:25:54Scott Pollard.
00:25:56You know, glad Scott Pollard is doing well now.
00:25:59He had some medical issues.
00:26:01That's right.
00:26:04So kudos to Scott Pollard.
00:26:09Glad he's doing a lot better.
00:26:12You know, it wasn't like there was over 15 invites.
00:26:15And Perk was like, oh, we're writing 14, but not not Perk.
00:26:19Right.
00:26:19It's the way it's the way he worded it, though, the way he scoured it as if like,
00:26:24I had a conversation with Perk, you know, called me and we had a conversation.
00:26:29The purpose is wasn't happy.
00:26:31And he's his whole thing is, you know, I respect the Celtics.
00:26:35But one, that was 24's moment, not 08's moment.
00:26:38I respect that, too.
00:26:41Two, like, you know, like he said, I haven't come to Boston on my own in years.
00:26:45I come from work or whatever.
00:26:48Like, I'm not, you know, I'm a former Celtic and, you know, I love those guys.
00:26:53But it's not like I'm coming back every reunion and I'm coming back here for work.
00:26:57And I covered a league and I got to tell like it is.
00:27:00So I respect Perk for that.
00:27:02And then Scout, he was upset that Scout didn't call him back with immediacy.
00:27:06And Scout was like, well, I'm a busy man and my bad.
00:27:09And so, you know, let's hope they can talk it out.
00:27:12It's kind of it's petty.
00:27:15But, you know, you probably shouldn't.
00:27:17It's got my not a refrain from saying, oh, Perk's got issues with, you know, do I think
00:27:22Missoula was upset?
00:27:23Yeah.
00:27:24Like anybody would be upset being called a birdbrain and anybody would be upset with
00:27:29some, you know, the Perks been hard on.
00:27:32But I don't know what team Perk likes.
00:27:34Perk hard on everybody.
00:27:36Yeah, like he's the he's like, you know, Max, we grew up.
00:27:40He's the dad that your father like none of his kids.
00:27:44Like it wasn't like, you know, like him.
00:27:49He'll like me equally bad, you know, like how it is.
00:27:57Perk keeps it real.
00:27:58He said he said Anthony Davis might ask for a training deadline if it don't work out
00:28:04with Reddit.
00:28:05Perk drops it on the day.
00:28:07He doesn't care.
00:28:07He's made some probably some adversaries and lost some friendships because he's had to
00:28:12keep it real.
00:28:13And I respect that.
00:28:14And he's he's been hard on the Celtics this year.
00:28:17And he's, you know, and he he suggested they might break up the Jays a couple of years
00:28:21ago.
00:28:22And, you know, but, hey, everybody, a lot of people got proved wrong.
00:28:26And I think Perk is personally happy for those guys.
00:28:29I think he like he enjoyed his time in Boston.
00:28:32He was for any place he played.
00:28:34He was in Boston for the longest.
00:28:35He won a championship.
00:28:37You know, I think he had a couple of his kids in Boston.
00:28:40So, you know, I think he's OK.
00:28:43But he's kind of like scowl.
00:28:45Like, first of all, bro, like, why are you why am I on?
00:28:48Like, am I talking about anybody called Rondo?
00:28:50You know, like, why is it just me?
00:28:53And I'm the one that got disinvited.
00:28:55Like you said, if I got invited, I probably wouldn't come.
00:28:59You got stuff to do.
00:29:00He lives in Texas.
00:29:01So he's going to come out here for one day to raise the banner in our parade?
00:29:07Yes, he would.
00:29:08You think he would?
00:29:10Yeah, if you got the invite, you think that's what it was?
00:29:13I mean, let's keep it real.
00:29:15Uh-oh.
00:29:16The organization could not have been happy with some of the things that Perk said.
00:29:23I mean, we've all we look, you and I, broadcasters, we're all we always in some way.
00:29:30People are tugging at you to say what you said might have been said differently when you
00:29:34when and me more than any, because they feel like I work for the organization.
00:29:40So if I said something, I've heard, you know, people call me.
00:29:43I'm going, well, you might have wanted to phrase it.
00:29:46I mean, I remember the one of the lines I used.
00:29:48It was when Kevin Garnett was out.
00:29:50I happen to say that.
00:29:54Somebody else, I was on TV and radio, and the guy said,
00:29:57do you think the Suffolks can win when Kevin Garnett got hurt?
00:30:00The year they wanted to check me a year after they wanted to.
00:30:02I said, no, no, it's impossible.
00:30:05And yes, you said it's impossible.
00:30:12I got a call.
00:30:13I got a call saying, you might want to, you know, try to rephrase.
00:30:17Well, I was right.
00:30:19Backtrack, backtrack.
00:30:21But in a way that when you are when they perceive you as part of the organization,
00:30:27because Perk will lay his head on the fact that, look, in a way, we won the championship.
00:30:34I was on the team.
00:30:35So so you it's kind of hard to say one way where you are saying, look,
00:30:41I was part of this organization.
00:30:42I know how great it was.
00:30:44But then on the other hand, to kind of be overly critical about a guy like Joe Missoula.
00:30:49I can understand you said, I don't agree with what he did.
00:30:52I've said that before.
00:30:53Maybe you might want to take somebody out or do this or do that.
00:30:56But the Burberry thing that that would rub this organization the wrong way.
00:31:04I mean, people were upset when Grant Williams was in the back.
00:31:08They were saying Grant Williams was celebrating with the organization.
00:31:12And people were pissed off at Grant for him to be there at the game.
00:31:17They didn't say nothing about Taco.
00:31:18But when Grant could be there.
00:31:20You can't be mad at Taco.
00:31:25That's a good point, though.
00:31:26They both play for the squad.
00:31:28Yeah.
00:31:28Anybody say anything at all with Taco.
00:31:31But they sure wanted Grant.
00:31:33Grant played with both teams.
00:31:35So I can see that he had some vested interest.
00:31:38He had friends who were there.
00:31:39And it just happened that his buddies for the Celtics won.
00:31:43I'm sure he had to be happy about that.
00:31:45We had him on our podcast.
00:31:47And we talked about who would win the championship.
00:31:50He predicted this whole thing.
00:31:52You know, kind of what would happen.
00:31:54But, you know, let's not be so naive to think that maybe there wasn't something in there
00:32:00or where Perk was that, you know, is different.
00:32:03I just believe that, you know, when you say something about a team.
00:32:08It's going to come back some way to haunt you.
00:32:10I mean, hell, do you think Stephen A. Smith is invited to any damn Celtic
00:32:14parades or anything like that?
00:32:16You know, he's not being invited.
00:32:18Because some of the things he said about this organization.
00:32:22Yeah, that's a good point.
00:32:24I mean, it's a tricky spot, man.
00:32:25If you ask me, I just feel like it's one of those things where, like Perk said,
00:32:31it wasn't an official invite list and he was not on it.
00:32:34You know, it's one of those things where if you wanted to be on the duck boat or if you
00:32:38want to be involved, I'm sure people put their name in it.
00:32:40Let me hear this.
00:32:41Go ahead.
00:32:42You said what?
00:32:43If he wants to be, if he wanted to be on the duck boat, what would happen?
00:32:46Let me make sure you hear what he would have put his name in.
00:32:48He would put his name in there.
00:32:49And would he have been on the duck boat?
00:32:52I'm asking.
00:32:53I'm asking you right now that I don't know.
00:32:56No, no, I'm asking.
00:32:57What do you think?
00:32:58So this probably would have said no.
00:33:00OK, right.
00:33:01But he was going to put himself out there.
00:33:02But who's got to put make himself the team ambassador to be like, I don't know if he
00:33:07would have been, you know what I mean?
00:33:08So I can see where Perk stands saying, like, wait, who are you to make that call?
00:33:11You know, I don't know.
00:33:13How scale has a carte blanche with this team in different areas that most people don't.
00:33:20And I love scale.
00:33:21I've always been his biggest admirer.
00:33:23And the fact that you have a guy who's his career scoring or what he did for this team
00:33:28compared to where he's at now in the organization and seeing with the big three.
00:33:33He was a guy who was interviewing the players, you know, before they came out and got on
00:33:37the dugboats himself into a commodity for this team.
00:33:43So he has he has, I guess, luxuries that some of us might not have.
00:33:48But if I'm the team, I'd be thinking the same way.
00:33:51Look, we don't need you talking for us or even putting that out there.
00:33:56Yeah, that's what you don't want.
00:33:57We don't we don't we don't need no negativity after we just won the championship.
00:34:01Let's win the championship and just be cool about it.
00:34:05We don't need it was enough stuff with the team, with all the stuff with Ray and KG,
00:34:12and that got settled, made good.
00:34:15And let's not bring it to where the difference between Park and Paul.
00:34:20Paul does the Fox Sports stuff.
00:34:22But Paul is unapologetically a Celtic.
00:34:25I mean, the next day after they won, he wore a Celtic stuff on the air.
00:34:29Paul is down for Boston.
00:34:31He is a Celtic.
00:34:32Park has felt like I got to make a name for myself.
00:34:36I didn't have a great, great career, an all star caliber career.
00:34:39I won a championship.
00:34:40I was a quality defensive big man for a decade or whatever.
00:34:47I got to make my name, keeping it real.
00:34:50And I admire that because that's what's kept him on the air.
00:34:53He doesn't have he's not he's not making no friends.
00:34:56He's not going to turn around and say nice things just, you know, just because
00:35:00a guy likes him or he's going to be.
00:35:02I'm sure he had some issues with Kevin Durant.
00:35:05Some things said about Kevin Durant.
00:35:07He keeps it real.
00:35:08He's kept it real about the Celtics.
00:35:09As I said, he treats everybody the same.
00:35:11He rips everybody.
00:35:13So for him to be.
00:35:14Yeah, he doesn't do that with LeBron.
00:35:18Yeah, I mean, I think I think that's the one with the soft part.

00:37:11That's CLNS.
00:37:12Pick more or less.
00:37:13And it's that easy.
00:37:16I think for him.
00:37:20I'm giving you another softball to get here.
00:37:22Oh, I think your son.
00:37:23Oh my God.
00:37:24You got your son.
00:37:25Oh, we don't.
00:37:26Oh, don't get back started.
00:37:28Come on, man.
00:37:30And look, I admire the fact that he's in the league, but if his name wasn't Bronny James,
00:37:37would we be talking about him?
00:37:39No, here's my thing on that.
00:37:41Okay.
00:37:42Okay.
00:37:43Give it to LeBron.
00:37:45I don't have a problem with LeBron maneuvering his son to get drafted, but I have a problem
00:37:51is when you have your son and he wants to be like you, he wants to be a pro football
00:37:58player.
00:37:59Okay.
00:38:00My goal, if I had a son in that position would be, or if I had a son who wanted to be a sports
00:38:05journalist like me or whatever, my goal would be, son, I want you to have the longest, best
00:38:11career possible.
00:38:13Okay.
00:38:14And if we don't work together, then, oh, well.
00:38:18LeBron's fascination with playing with him, I think has forced him and Bronny to skip
00:38:24steps because people are like, well, it's like Ken Griffey Jr. and Ken Griffey Sr.
00:38:30No, the hell it's not.
00:38:32Ken Griffey Jr. came out of Bar High School in Cincinnati in 1987.
00:38:38He was 18.
00:38:39Everybody freaking knew he was going to be in the bigs in a year or so.
00:38:44You saw that motherfucker is the real deal.
00:38:48Okay.
00:38:49And he was playing for the Mariners by the time he was 19.
00:38:53You saw it.
00:38:54Wow.
00:38:54Okay.
00:38:55You saw, if you look at a young Ken Griffey Jr., Ken Griffey, I forgot how long he was
00:39:00in the Miners.
00:39:01It was not long.
00:39:02He got drafted number one overall and his dad was still serviceable.
00:39:06He was 40.
00:39:08So his dad had him young.
00:39:09I think his dad had him at 19.
00:39:10So he was 39, 40 by the time Ken Griffey Jr. got to the bigs and they played together.
00:39:17So it was different.
00:39:20You saw Griffey was a mofo.
00:39:23Like he was going to be the man.
00:39:26You can't do that.
00:39:27You don't see that out of Bronny James.
00:39:29Yeah, don't.
00:39:30Okay.
00:39:30Yeah.
00:39:31And he's four years.
00:39:32And he's only four years, man.
00:39:33My whole thing with LeBron is you want to play with him, but you're going for it.
00:39:37Now he's a grown man.
00:39:38He can't go back to college.
00:39:41He a grown ass man now.
00:39:43You know, taking your son at 19 and said, okay, no more college parties.
00:39:50No more girls on the campus.
00:39:52He could have transferred.
00:39:53Okay.
00:39:54It didn't work out at USC.
00:39:55He could have transferred to 50 schools would have taken him in a minute.
00:39:59Played, had fun, came back from his hard work, developed, and then maybe came out next year
00:40:06or played another two years.
00:40:08He coming out averaging less than five points a game.
00:40:11And now, and his dad ain't going to be around forever.
00:40:14Gary, his captain teammate didn't get drafted, man.
00:40:17The dude averaged like three times more and all that.
00:40:19But yeah.
00:40:21Like to me, you're forcing your son to skip these steps just because you want to be on
00:40:27the team with him.
00:40:28Well, did you force the Lakers to get him?
00:40:34Pretty much.
00:40:36What'd you think?
00:40:37Well, yeah.
00:40:37He wanted to play with his son.
00:40:39Yeah.
00:40:41You think they're not going to take on Max?
00:40:42Come on, man.
00:40:45I was like, I was told my boys on a group chat, Rich Paul was like Suge Knight calling
00:40:51all the record companies.
00:40:54If Snoop Son wanted to be a rapper and Rich Paul was like Suge Knight calling all the
00:40:58companies was like, you best not sign Snoop Son.
00:41:05He come to death raw.
00:41:07He come to death raw.
00:41:09It was like he did.
00:41:10He, that was some gangster stuff.
00:41:12All teams, you bet not.
00:41:16Draft, draft Ronnie and see what happens.
00:41:22That's the way you see his blackness coming out now.
00:41:24Yeah, I like it.
00:41:29Draft Ronnie and see what happens.
00:41:31Max, he ain't saying this on 98.5, yo.
00:41:32I love it.
00:41:33Go ahead, Gary.
00:41:34Keep going, man.
00:41:36So to me, that's what, that's what, I just think it's like, it's a disservice to his
00:41:41son in the sense of now this young man has got to go to the G league, go all these cities.
00:41:47It's going to be great if he ever gets on the court, but you talk about a one or two
00:41:51year thing and then you're going to retire and this dude's got to make a career out of
00:41:54this because look, let's look at J.D. Davis.
00:41:58And that's the hardest position too, right, Gary?
00:41:59That's the most competitive position.
00:42:01J.D. Davis came out of Alabama after a freshman.
00:42:04He had a much better year than Ronnie did.
00:42:07He's played two years in the G league.
00:42:09The Celtics have to decide if they want to sign him.
00:42:11Now he's a free agent.
00:42:12He's 21.
00:42:14He's like still trying to make it.
00:42:17Stay with Jaden Springer.
00:42:19You want to be that guy or Brandon Boston, the kid from the Clippers who was Terrence
00:42:25Clark's close friend, played one year at Kentucky, I want to say.
00:42:29The Clippers just released him.
00:42:30He's 21.
00:42:31Now he's trying to find himself.
00:42:34Is that what you want for your son?
00:42:35I don't want that for my son.
00:42:37If I'm my son, I don't want that.
00:42:39I want him to go right to the league, then try to run for rookie of the year and have
00:42:45a good long career.
00:42:46Not, okay, well, I got to go to Yugoslavia.
00:42:49I got to go to.
00:42:50No, no, no, you're missing it here.
00:42:52There's a big difference.
00:42:54His daddy is a fucking billionaire.
00:42:58So what happens if he retires, Max?
00:43:01He's still going to be a billionaire.
00:43:03Yeah, but what's he going to buy a team and then sign Ronnie?
00:43:06If he stops, if Ronnie, wait a minute, wait a minute.
00:43:10Ronnie stops playing in a year.
00:43:13What do you think he's going to do?
00:43:14What do you think his daddy ain't going to take care of him?
00:43:16No, but I'm saying he.
00:43:17He's safe for his career though.
00:43:20His goal is to be an NBA player.
00:43:23No, financially, he's fine.
00:43:25I ain't worried about Ronnie going broke.
00:43:27I get that, but I'm worried about Ronnie having a 10 to 12 year NBA career.
00:43:33Well, we all rush the process.
00:43:37Yeah, we all can look at that.
00:43:38It's just saying right now.
00:43:40I just don't think that's a service to Ronnie.
00:43:42Yeah, I agree.
00:43:43I agree.
00:43:44Because how many brothers out here in the G League 20?
00:43:48Look at James Young.
00:43:50Celtics drafted that kid 10 years ago.
00:43:53Whatever the hell happened to him?
00:43:55What happened to him?
00:43:56He played a year and a half.
00:43:58Where he at?
00:44:01And that was a lottery pick.
00:44:03He was on the 14th or 17th.
00:44:06I can't remember.
00:44:08RJ Hunter just got back in the G League, man.
00:44:10He's been back and forth.
00:44:13And I'm not saying he's going to be broke, but trying to be a G leaguer and trying to
00:44:19go through that route is hard as hell to be without having LeBron's name on top of it.
00:44:26So maybe he's going to keep him in the roster.
00:44:30LeBron said, you better keep my boy.
00:44:33Don't send him to the G League.
00:44:35Is that going to help him?
00:44:38I don't know.
00:44:39In LA, too.
00:44:40You're doing a disservice to him because it's nothing to do with the nepotism.
00:44:44OK, if Ronnie was averaging 22 points a game, I'd be like, yep.
00:44:52There, he ready.
00:44:53He's only averaging less than five points a game.
00:44:56Like, I'm not dissing him.
00:44:58I watch a lot of his games.
00:44:59He's got some skills.
00:45:00He's 6'1", man.
00:45:04He's 6'1".
00:45:05Yeah, it's tough, man.
00:45:07It's like, so he's going to be a truth.
00:45:09Oh, his upside is Derek.
00:45:11Oh, Derek White.
00:45:12OK, Drew Holiday.
00:45:14Drew Holiday's 6'4".
00:45:16Can you see how big Drew Holiday is?
00:45:18And strong that dude is?
00:45:20And Derek White's 6'5", 6'6".
00:45:23That's not the equal, man.
00:45:26Ronnie is 6'1".
00:45:30Avery Bradley might be close.
00:45:34But Avery was an elite defender.
00:45:36And Avery turned out to be a really good shooter, though.
00:45:39Yes, and he worked on his stuff.
00:45:40Yeah, he polished it up.
00:45:41And he might be the closest comparison.
00:45:43And Avery came out at 19, and he was injured.
00:45:46And Avery took a while to get going.
00:45:48So I really hope he succeeds because I think he's a good kid.
00:45:52Just having seen interviews with him.
00:45:54But, man, I just think they just fast-tracked this thing.
00:45:58It could have been next year.
00:46:00OK, son, you're coming off the heart thing.
00:46:02Play a full season at Ohio State, Duquesne, wherever you want to go.
00:46:08Get your numbers up.
00:46:09Get your confidence up.
00:46:10Come out in 25.
00:46:12And then do the same thing.
00:46:14And maybe you got a little traction now.
00:46:18I'm not saying he shouldn't have got drafted.
00:46:20I'm just saying.
00:46:21He's fast-tracking them.
00:46:23Well, if you're the Lakers, you're saying exactly that.
00:46:28What you're saying is like what?
00:46:3090% of the people.
00:46:31Because now you're a grown man, Max.
00:46:32Like, no kids, no parties.
00:46:34He's been taken.
00:46:35He's in that NBA life.
00:46:38You can hang out with your dad all you want.
00:46:39You can go out to dinner with him.
00:46:41But you're a grown man now.
00:46:44Like, this is a grown man's league, even if you're 18, 19, 20.
00:46:48You've got to figure out what to do with them other 22 hours.
00:46:51You've got to figure out what to do with the women.
00:46:53You've got to figure out what to do with your homeboys.
00:46:56Some of them want to hang out with you too much
00:46:58or get you into stuff you don't need to get into.
00:47:00Like, you don't have the structure.
00:47:02I get it.
00:47:03I don't.
00:47:03I don't.
00:47:04I think he's a grown man.
00:47:04But it's just like you just turned yourself into a straight-up grown man.
00:47:09I think it's a lot more than that.
00:47:10I think he has to get his game up to par.
00:47:13Yeah.
00:47:13In addition to that, though.
00:47:15That's the biggest thing.
00:47:17Because he's got a leg in the gym.
00:47:19And you know how it is, Max.
00:47:20And you know Joe Sway, some of these young dudes.
00:47:23I remember when I first got on the Celtic beat, seeing Bill Walker.
00:47:29And that dude was around KG, Paul, Ray.
00:47:33And that dude was out of fucking shape.
00:47:35And it was like, Bill, what more motivation do you need?
00:47:40You're working around three Hall of Famers.
00:47:43And if you want to throw Rondo in there, maybe four eventually.
00:47:46I don't know.
00:47:47But four All-Stars.
00:47:50And you come in here, and you leave in practice.
00:47:53And them dudes still working?
00:47:55He was in New York by 2011, man.
00:47:57That was it.
00:47:57It was a short stint.
00:47:59Because I remember hearing about him when he was in high school, how much of an athlete.
00:48:03And I just remember JR Gittins, who wasn't very good either.
00:48:07But JR Gittins worked his ass off.
00:48:10He's worked out with Ray.
00:48:11He was trying to get it.
00:48:13And it's just like the league.
00:48:15And I know the Lakers will have his back.
00:48:17So that's a special situation.
00:48:19How do you have his back when you can't play?
00:48:24Well, they're going to, yeah.
00:48:26They're going to make it.
00:48:28When his father retires, all bets are off.
00:48:31Why the Lakers don't care about him in five years when he's 24, and he still ain't quite
00:48:37got there.
00:48:39Look at Davidson.
00:48:40Look at JD Springer.
00:48:43James Springer.
00:48:44James Springer is 21 years old.
00:48:45He came out.
00:48:47All them dudes.
00:48:48Undersized guards, though.
00:48:51Why are you coming out?
00:48:52Especially with JD and Bogue.
00:48:55With NIL money, you still coming out?
00:48:57You can make money.
00:48:58Now you can hustle in college.
00:48:59You ain't got to take the envelope under the door anymore like a lot of these kids did
00:49:04to buy the SUV and take it home.
00:49:07Buy the whip and some shit.
00:49:08You can go to the car.
00:49:09You can go right on the car dealership, get you a brand new car, get money.
00:49:14Like, there's no reason to go to the league unless you know you're going to play.
00:49:18No reason.
00:49:20Unless you just really don't like school.
00:49:22Who didn't like college?
00:49:24Who the hell?
00:49:25Like, is college that bad?
00:49:29Let me say this.
00:49:30Like, what?
00:49:31Have you suffered in college?
00:49:32With NIL money?
00:49:34Let me explain this to you.
00:49:35The best compliment I ever had came from one guy, and that was Jojo White.
00:49:41I do remember being on the court playing, and I looked over at Jojo White.
00:49:46I just made the move, and Jojo White was his 10th year.
00:49:50You know, I was a rookie.
00:49:51And he looked at another guy beside him and said, I fucking play.
00:49:56And at that point, you know.
00:49:59But I'm just telling you, when Bronny James is going into the situation with guys who
00:50:04are ahead of him already, and then there's going to be the nepotism thinking like, well,
00:50:10the only reason you're here is because your daddy.
00:50:13Your dad, yeah.
00:50:14And that's going to make guys go at you even more.
00:50:17And the Bronny James can't protect him on the floor once he gets out there.
00:50:22You're going to be exposed.
00:50:24Not in the G League when all these youngsters.
00:50:26You are.
00:50:26Hungry.
00:50:27Hungry G Leaguers.
00:50:28Yeah, that's a good point, man.
00:50:29And don't be all in his ear about his daddy.
00:50:33Yeah.
00:50:34That's a good point.
00:50:35That is that we've seen that.
00:50:37How many times?
00:50:38We saw that happen with all of Jordan's sons who were trying to get in, you know, just
00:50:45trying to get to work.
00:50:46But all they could hear was Mike.
00:50:48Very seldom you hear that where you have a player that's a young player who's coming
00:50:53this league.
00:50:54I can't think of one in a long time.
00:50:56You know, Steph Curry is the one that comes to mind.
00:50:59Probably, yeah.
00:51:00But other than that, I can think of all these.
00:51:02Kobe.
00:51:02Obviously, Kobe.
00:51:03Sometimes then you're going, well, what?
00:51:05What happened to this guy?
00:51:06I mean, what?
00:51:06Yeah.
00:51:07I mean, a lot of them.
00:51:08That just doesn't happen.
00:51:09Was a morning son tried to make the league.
00:51:11Shaq's son tried to make the league.
00:51:13Oh, yeah.
00:51:14Oldest son tried to make the league.
00:51:16Ewing's kid, right?
00:51:17Or no.
00:51:18Patrick Ewing.
00:51:18He had a little cup of coffee.
00:51:19He played some.
00:51:20Yeah.
00:51:21Glenn Rice ended up getting in trouble.
00:51:23Rice's son.
00:51:24Like it is not.
00:51:25Look, look, look at King and Martin's son.
00:51:28Who's a freakish athlete.
00:51:30And he's bounced around.
00:51:31Now he's in Philly.
00:51:32Like to me, it's hard.
00:51:34It is hard.
00:51:35And those dudes all have better college careers than Bronte.
00:51:41So the protection is there because LeBron is there.
00:51:44And I applaud that.
00:51:45And I said, I ain't tripping about the nepotism or picking
00:51:47him.
00:51:48You know, give him a shot.
00:51:49But you just started his grown man life already.
00:51:53You are picking.
00:51:54You are.
00:51:55You are picking against that.
00:51:57I'm saying exactly what you said.
00:51:59I mean, he's just.
00:52:00That's his prediction, though.
00:52:02I just.
00:52:03I don't like.
00:52:04I don't mind nepotism.
00:52:06Whatever is whatever.
00:52:07It's a league of nepotism.
00:52:09We all know, Max.
00:52:10Like we all see.
00:52:12We all see people's sons around the organization that we were.
00:52:17Not as a player.
00:52:19We see that in management.
00:52:21We see that in coaching.
00:52:23But when you step out there on the floor, you don't see that like that.
00:52:27Either you can play or you can't play.
00:52:29We think about Gary Payton's son.
00:52:32Gary Payton could play or he couldn't play.
00:52:34And he's, you know, he's OK.
00:52:37He's made a living.
00:52:38He's able to do.
00:52:39You know, we've seen very seldom, very seldom.
00:52:41We've seen that particular thing happen.
00:52:43I am not mad.
00:52:46I'm just I guess I'm just confused.
00:52:48And I'm not confused.
00:52:50But I really feel bad for them.
00:52:51This is one time I feel bad for the Lakers, that they were forced to do something that
00:52:56they know damn well that they shouldn't have done.
00:52:58That's that's all I say.
00:53:00They know damn well.
00:53:01That's what you mess with Suge Knight.
00:53:02That's what happened.
00:53:03Huh?
00:53:04You get that.
00:53:04You get that phone call.
00:53:05I see you mess with Suge Knight.
00:53:06That's what happened.
00:53:09Gary, let's talk real quick.
00:53:11The Celtics rookies, though.
00:53:12Baylor Shireman at number 30.
00:53:14You got A.N. Watson at number 54.
00:53:18I guess we start with Shireman.
00:53:19Is there any belief that the fact that Celtics didn't go ahead and try to trade into the
00:53:24second round, which when you think about the second apron, the tax implications and all that
00:53:29would have been significantly cheaper?
00:53:30Is there any stock in thinking that Brad, like this is his guy, like he 100 percent
00:53:35really believes that this guy can can develop into an everyday player?
00:53:38Or is this just him picking at number 30?
00:53:41Which one is it?
00:53:42I do think they really like Shireman.
00:53:44Like I heard from a couple of people after the draft because I hadn't seen I hadn't watched
00:53:49much Creighton.
00:53:50I ain't gonna lie.
00:53:50It wasn't like I was studying Creighton all year.
00:53:54I knew he was the best player on Creighton and I'd heard of him a little bit.
00:53:57But a couple of people I talked to were high on him and said that was a good pick.
00:54:03Like they were like, oh, that kid can play.
00:54:05He's going to he's going to he's going to fit into what they're trying to do.
00:54:09I thought that.
00:54:09And then Watson, I surprised he fell that far.
00:54:14Gonzaga players usually know how to play.
00:54:16They make pretty good pros.
00:54:17They make solid pros.
00:54:19I don't know if it would be an all star or anything, but I think those are two
00:54:23quality picks.
00:54:24And those two dudes are 23.
00:54:26They ready to play.
00:54:27That's the difference between the shooters, too.
00:54:30Do you really do you really need those players?
00:54:33You talk about they need shooting and they got to prepare for life after.
00:54:38When the salary start kicking in because they got to figure out what to do with Derek White.
00:54:43OK, what do you mean?
00:54:45You bring in salary wise.
00:54:48You know, I mean, you got a pad.
00:54:49You got to you got to cultivate some of these young guys because you because you can't
00:54:53sign mid-level guys.
00:54:54You can't sign mid-level sessions.
00:54:57No buyout buyouts.
00:54:59Right.
00:54:59No buyout contracts.
00:55:01This second apron is is limited.
00:55:06It's a real deal.
00:55:07Well, you know what?
00:55:08Once you once you go to war right now, what you have.
00:55:12Yeah.
00:55:12If you keep those guys you have right now, you go.
00:55:15You can make the law the next five years because you're going to have to find you have to find
00:55:21a big because or see what happens to poor thing is because Al, this might be his last
00:55:26year coming up.
00:55:27I don't know if he plays in his 40s.
00:55:28We'll see.
00:55:29But let me tell you.
00:55:31Oh, yeah.
00:55:34Walk the beast now.
00:55:38I've got five damn kids over there and they're paying $10 million a year.
00:55:43What do you think his wife is saying to him?
00:55:46Got a new crib, too.
00:55:48New house and everything.
00:55:50Tell him to come home and she's having kids.
00:55:54I asked her, I said, oh, everybody else went down to Miami to celebrate.
00:56:01Why didn't Al go?
00:56:02She looked at me like, are you crazy?
00:56:05You got five kids at home.
00:56:08I think it's going to go year to year.
00:56:11You're getting the $10 million and keep getting the $10 million until his body just breaks down.
00:56:17You see the thing about Al right now.
00:56:19He's still in great shape.
00:56:23They massage him all the time.
00:56:25Why are you going?
00:56:26Why would you go home?
00:56:28Well, Gary, they got to sign one of these free agents, though, whether it's Luke Cornette,
00:56:32whether it's Tillman.
00:56:33You can't let both of these guys walk, though, right?
00:56:36I don't think so.
00:56:36I think they obviously I think they like Cornette a lot.
00:56:39Tillman, I don't know if it worked out as well as they thought it would.
00:56:42And the same with Brissette.
00:56:45I think everybody thought Brissette would take that Grant Williams role,
00:56:48and that didn't work out.
00:56:49Brissette just ended up kind of being a defensive spark plug here and there.
00:56:55The thing about the Celtics, you have the veteran minimum.
00:56:59And when the market starts to dry up, there's going to be some quality players out there
00:57:05who are going to take that little $3 million minimum they got to try to win a chip.
00:57:09So I think the Celtics options are a lot better than it sounds because,
00:57:13oh, they only have the minimum.
00:57:14But wait till this market starts.
00:57:18I want to ask you this question because you're kind of an insider.
00:57:21Where does Paul George go at?
00:57:23Does he stay in LA or does he go to Philly?
00:57:27Clock's ticking, by the way.
00:57:28So we'll see.
00:57:29We might find out in the next 24 hours.
00:57:31I think he stays in LA.
00:57:34I just think, why would you?
00:57:39Unless Philly throws everything.
00:57:40Because obviously Philly's got to-
00:57:41That's what I'm thinking, Gary.
00:57:42I'm thinking Philly might have the greatest presentation or something like that.
00:57:47But to ask a guy to go to Los Angeles who's from that area and go to Philly
00:57:54and just be in a different environment in the East Coast than Paul.
00:57:57It's gritty.
00:58:00I just think the environment.
00:58:04The Clippers are like, man, you good, but we ain't winning with you.
00:58:09So we're not going to offer you the four-year.
00:58:12They gave Kawhi three.
00:58:15Does he take three?
00:58:16Does he take four but less money?
00:58:18Or does Philly with Daryl Morey throw everything at him?
00:58:22You can be our number two.
00:58:24But he goes to Philly.
00:58:26He's a number three guy.
00:58:28Okay.
00:58:31But here's the thing about-
00:58:3334.
00:58:34Yeah, but the thing you're talking about right now,
00:58:37maybe he takes on the same position as Drew Holiday.
00:58:40Drew Holiday is not a number two guy, three guy, four guy.
00:58:43But if you're Paul George and you're more or less interested in winning the chip,
00:58:48you take that position.
00:58:50Because now you got MB.
00:58:52You got Maxie.
00:58:54And I can fill in the blanks.
00:58:56And you guys talking about, well, he's in LA now.
00:58:58You're not really in LA during the season because you're always traveling.
00:59:02During the off season, you can go where you want to go.
00:59:04But during the season, you always boom, boom, boom, boom.
00:59:08You're going all over the place.
00:59:09So I think that Paul George, to me,
00:59:14it makes more sense that Paul George signs a contract and goes to Philly.
00:59:19And that makes Philly tougher.
00:59:20But I still don't believe Philly has enough to beat the Celtics.
00:59:24Yeah.
00:59:25I think that's where he probably should go if they roll out the red carpet for him.
00:59:30The Clippers have shown that, listen, we're kind of over this whole Paul Kawhi thing.
00:59:37And Orlando's a wild card.
00:59:39They got the money.
00:59:40They need a veteran to take the next step.
00:59:44Is it going to be somebody like that?
00:59:46Or Klay Thompson?
00:59:47Klay's out there too now.
00:59:50But you know what?
00:59:51I just think somehow the Clippers come up and say, OK, we're good.
00:59:55This is what we're going to give you.
00:59:57Come on back.
00:59:58And of course, it's reported that Paul George was supposed to have meetings with these teams.
01:00:01So we'll see what happens, what comes out of that at the beginning of the free agency.
01:00:04Of course, the first week of free agency, though,
01:00:06that's going to be one of the top reports for sure.
01:00:10But last but not least, Gary, I got to ask you about this Celtics book you got coming out.
01:00:16Saw you tweeting about a couple of weeks ago, days after the Celtics won the 18th championship.
01:00:20Tell us about it, man.
01:00:21I know it's not just about the 2024 team, but the franchise overall, if I'm not mistaken, right?
01:00:25Yeah.
01:00:26We have a book.
01:00:30It's a kind of pictorial history of the Celtics, all the great moments,
01:00:34the great games, the great Celtics of all time.
01:00:37And let me see if I can find.
01:00:40My damn name better be in this motherfucker.
01:00:42I was waiting for that shit.
01:00:43It might be.
01:00:43I don't know.
01:00:46I knew you were going to say that.
01:00:47Here we go.
01:00:49I was going to say, I was going to preface the question to be like,
01:00:52better be Max in there.
01:00:53There he is.
01:00:54Draft match, Cedric Maxwell.
01:00:55So that's one of the top moments.
01:00:57I had to pick about 170 moments.
01:00:59He had that highlighted.
01:01:00Look at that.
01:01:00Look at that, Max.
01:01:02So we're editing process, but there's, there's Max playing against the bullets.
01:01:07He's actually.
01:01:08Is that a no look?
01:01:09Okay.
01:01:10Max.
01:01:10No, no passing the ball.
01:01:12Yeah.
01:01:12You don't see that often.
01:01:14What do you wear?
01:01:22What's that?
01:01:22What's that?
01:01:23One of, uh, one of three, 300 assists, career assists.
01:01:26I was not a reluctant.
01:01:29Looking here, surrounded by being guarded by his close friend, Rick Mahorn during those,
01:01:34during his bullets.
01:01:35Oh, your boy.
01:01:36Yeah.
01:01:37So I didn't even know he played with the bullets there.
01:01:39Yeah.
01:01:39Yeah.
01:01:39He started with the bullets where he wants the pistons, but, uh, yeah, it's a, it's a
01:01:44pictorial color, color photo, mostly colors, some of the black and white from the fifties
01:01:49and sixties, but right.
01:01:50Right.
01:01:51If you, if you, and I'm not saying this because it's my book, but I had to really study the
01:01:57history of the Celtics, all the great moments from the fifties and the sixties, the first
01:02:01black, obviously Chuck Cooper, the first black player drafted in the history of the NBA,
01:02:06obviously the Russell years, Russell being the coach, the seventies with, uh, Jojo White,
01:02:12Dave Cowens, and John Havlicek to the eighties.
01:02:15And even the tough summer that I've talked about some of the tough times to the early
01:02:20two thousands, the trash, Lynn Bias and Reggie Lewis, you know, it's a history of almost
01:02:28the 80 years now of the Celtic organization with moments, photos all the way until the
01:02:3518th championship and the parade.
01:02:38So we got, we got that included too.
01:02:39So if you want to learn and it's for kids to, you know, just, and it's my vignettes,
01:02:45my summary summarizing some of the great moments.
01:02:49And so if you want to read about the organization, uh, check it out on Amazon, it's called.
01:02:55Yeah.
01:02:55I was going to say, what's the name?
01:02:56What's the name of this book?
01:02:57Gary, the Boston Celtics and illustrated timeline.
01:03:04Huh?
01:03:07It's better to be a single digit.
01:03:10Yeah.
01:03:11Page, page 50.
01:03:15Well, he had to do the fifties and sixties.
01:03:16So that's not bad.
01:03:17I can't put you first.
01:03:26Max, you know, owns a family room with chicken wings.
01:03:29I could have put that, you know, because people going to be thinking that way.
01:03:35And be like, you know, he's not the broadcaster.
01:03:38He's not this.
01:03:39I'm a former player.
01:03:40He just goes in the wise room and gets chicken wings.
01:03:47I just thought he was a broadcaster.
01:03:49Yeah.
01:03:49That was funny as hell.
01:03:54Okay.
01:03:55I thought, you know what?
01:03:56I did the same thing to Jason.
01:03:58When he came up to me, uh, in Indiana, I said, uh, he said, man, I'm a, when you want,
01:04:03I'm when you ring this year.
01:04:04I said, Oh, I already got to, you know, you get your own.
01:04:10Yeah.
01:04:11Join the fraternity.
01:04:12Right.
01:04:13I'm going to have to put this picture out there.
01:04:16They have myself, Al, uh, Porzingis and Jason Tatum holding the trophy.
01:04:22Oh, that's a great.
01:04:23But I looked at me like I was sick because I'm standing beside Porzingis.
01:04:28I'm like, they said, what happened to you?
01:04:30Are you sick?
01:04:31You're okay.
01:04:31I said, this dude is seven foot five.
01:04:34I know.
01:04:38Yeah.
01:04:38Right.
01:04:39You get no brother.
01:04:41He makes, he makes everyone look small for sure.
01:04:44All right.
01:04:44He's, he's Gary Washburn of the Boston globe, man.
01:04:47Also a one third of the big three NBA podcast here on CLNS media.
01:04:52And it's always fun catching up with Gary, man.
01:04:54Look at that over an hour, man.
01:04:55We could go for another one for sure, man.
01:04:57Gary Washburn.
01:04:57Appreciate you coming back.
01:04:58And we ain't paying you ass either.
01:05:00No.
01:05:12No, that was one of the funniest segments for sure.
01:05:24That's a valid point.
01:05:25That's a valid point.
01:05:25But that's gonna do it for this episode of the Cedric Maxwell podcast.
01:05:28He's Cedric Maxwell.
01:05:29I am Josue Pavone.
01:05:31One more last time.
01:05:32Thank you, Gary, for coming on, man.
01:05:33And everyone out there.
01:05:34Appreciate you.
01:05:36Subscribe.
01:05:36Great review.
01:05:37All that good stuff.
