00:31 of Acts. Acts chapter 1 verse 1 through 3 in the New Living Translation of the
00:36 Scriptures. Notice there these words, "In my first book I told you, Theophilus,
00:43 about everything that Jesus began to do and teach." This is Luke is the author of
00:50 the book of Acts and when he says in my first book he's talking about the
00:55 gospel of Luke. That Jesus began to do and to teach, verse 2, "Until the day he
01:02 was taken up to heaven after giving his chosen apostles further instructions
01:07 through the Holy Spirit. During the 40 days after he suffered and died, he
01:11 appeared to the apostles from time to time and he proved to them in many ways
01:16 that he was actually alive and he talked to them about the kingdom of God." I'm
01:22 talking today simply from the subject "start." Start. Start. You ought to start
01:29 where you are and not where you should be, just start where you are. That's the
01:34 only place that you can start is right where you are. I don't know what it is
01:39 that you might have in your heart to do, things that you have set in your mind
01:45 things that you've dreamed about doing and you just haven't taken the time to
01:51 do it. Or you haven't gotten rid of all of the fear about what could happen, what
01:57 could go wrong, what could fail, but just start. Just start. Just start. Just start.
02:05 Tony Robbins says that the only impossible journey is the one you never
02:10 began. It is impossible if you never began so you just have to start. You just
02:17 have to start somewhere because if you don't get started you cannot get
02:20 finished. Whatever it is that you need to start, just get started. I meant start
02:28 with whatever God places on the on the inside of you. You may not think it's big
02:32 to other people but it may be big to you. It could be starting a lawn care service
02:37 or child care service. It could be starting doing somebody's hair or their
02:41 nails or their lashes or whatever it is but just start. Make a business plan.
02:46 Start. Start on your business plan. Start on your logo. Start on your domain name.
02:51 Just start. Start working on your book. Start working on your choreography.
02:57 Start on that book of poems. Start. Just start. Start doing something. Start that
03:03 exercise plan. Start that healthy eating plan. I don't want to call it a diet. It
03:09 ought to be a lifestyle. Start it. Just just start. Just start it and if you
03:15 start it you will be surprised at some of the most miraculous things that can
03:19 happen if you'll just take the courage to start. Will you have fear as you start
03:24 stuff? Absolutely. Wonder why? Because there are so many unknown factors and
03:29 those of you who are guilty of overthinking there will always be
03:35 possibilities of things that could go wrong. That this could go wrong and that
03:39 could go wrong and you you might start feeling like you could get in over your
03:42 head but start anyway and sometimes people say well I don't know how it's
03:47 going to be if I start this off. How is it going to be down the road? Just forget
03:51 about all of that. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said that you don't have to see the
03:55 whole staircase just take the first step. Just take the first step. You don't have
04:01 to see the whole staircase. Just take the first step. As you start putting one foot
04:07 in front of the other as you start then the next step will avail it'll open
04:12 itself up to you. Remember God said that my word is a lamp unto your feet and a
04:18 light unto your pathway. He's saying I will give you enough light to be able to
04:23 take the next step. So you can see just the next step. What's the next step that
04:28 you ought to do? What's the first step? I'll give you enough light to see the
04:32 first thing that you ought to do. It might be getting the name of a business
04:36 incorporated. It might be setting up your prayer plan, your fasting plan, your Bible
04:42 reading plan. Just set just get started. Start putting something in writing. Just
04:48 get started. Just get started. Get get your health program. Get up get a get a
04:54 trainer. Just get started. Just put one foot in front of the other and God will
04:59 give you enough light to be able to see the next step. Just enough. That's all the
05:03 light that you need is enough light to see the next step. You don't have to see
05:07 the whole staircase. You just need enough to be able to take the next step. That's
05:13 all that you need and it is amazing. The Chinese have a proverb that says that
05:18 the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now. So
05:24 just start now. Just just I mean I mean yeah if you had started 10 years ago, 20
05:29 years ago, that would have been fantastic. But the second best time is right now.
05:33 It's just absolutely right now. You don't have to wait for something to be
05:37 perfected in order to start it. Just get started. Why do I say just get started?
05:43 And not wait for it to be perfect and have all of the kinks worked out and
05:47 every possibility figured out. It is because you can correct something but
05:53 you cannot correct nothing. So if you do nothing you can't correct nothing. You
05:59 can't make nothing better but you can always make something better. I mean I
06:05 started off when I started painting just drawing stick people. Of course I still
06:11 just draw stick people. But now I've learned to put hair on them. I'm just
06:18 telling you whatever it is that you will start and stick with, start and stick,
06:22 start and stick, start and stick, you will get better. You will get better. Whatever
06:29 you start and continue, you will get better. You will get better. I don't care
06:35 if it's singing. I don't care if it's speaking. I don't care if it's doing
06:38 gymnastic. If it is lifting weights, if it's doing aerobics, you will get better.
06:43 Just start, start, start and stick, start and stick and you will get better. Now
06:50 here's the wonderful thing. We are so apprehensive about starting something
06:53 and then it messing up on us. If it messes up, guess what? God allows restarts.
07:01 I don't know about you but every time that we mess up, God gives us a restart.
07:07 I mean I worked 10 years in information systems and there were times that
07:12 computers would freeze up and and you can't give it a command, everything is
07:17 frozen. I would just simply turn it off and reboot it and somehow in the
07:23 restarting of it, things that had gotten stuck as it was trying to go couldn't go
07:29 and if you get burned out, if you get frustrated, you just simply need to
07:34 sometimes go to bed and have a restart the next day. Just go to bed and and turn
07:40 on your restart switch. Sometimes fall on your knees, go into your prayer closet
07:45 and begin to pray until God has just rebooted your spirit. Sometimes all you
07:51 need is a restart. I'm just telling you, I've had my cell phone to just freeze up.
07:55 You can't give it any commands, you can't do this, this won't work, that won't work.
07:59 Shut it down. Power off. Disconnect and then restart and if you just start, just
08:08 something about the start will recalibrate your emotions, it'll get you
08:12 back on track and allow you to begin to start afresh. God always allows us a
08:19 fresh start. That's why he said morning by morning. New mercies, brand new. I'm
08:25 gonna give you a new start every day. He lets the sun go down so that all
08:30 of the failures of today are locked in today and tomorrow when the sun rises
08:35 it's a new day with new opportunities, with a new mindset and you don't have to
08:40 be locked into the failures and the mess-ups of your yesterday. God will not
08:44 talk to you about your yesterday but he will talk to you about your present and
08:48 he'll talk to you about your future. So just start. He already knows your history
08:54 and let me just tell you this, there's nothing new about your history but
08:59 there's something new about where you're going. But start, start. The journey of a
09:04 thousand miles begins with one step. The journey of a thousand miles it begins
09:09 just with one step. Just start. There are so many people that have intentions but
09:16 the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Take the steps, take the steps
09:21 toward God. When you move toward God he begins to move toward you. You need to
09:26 get closer to God you got you, you, you, you, you, you must move first. It's like a
09:30 game of chess, it's a game of checkers. You've got first move and while you're
09:34 sitting there praying saying move Jesus, move Jesus, come on move Jesus. He's
09:39 sitting there and says you move, it's your turn. When you move then I will move.
09:46 It's your turn, it's your turn. And here's what I want to tell you, shift your focus
09:53 from what you need to stop to what you need to start. Just shift your focus for
09:59 what you need to to start, not really what you need to stop. Shift it on what
10:05 you need to start. Shift your focus, shift your focus. If you shift your focus, you
10:11 know why? Because if I shift my focus to what I need to start I'm not wasting
10:17 time on the stuff that I need to stop. Well I need to stop just laying in the
10:21 bed, have a plan to get up, something to do. And if I'll fix my focus on what I
10:27 need to start it will automatically clear up what I need to to stop. I mean
10:34 people tell you stop smoking, I mean if you stop smoking what are you gonna
10:37 replace it with? Just give them the replacement. If when you tell people just
10:42 say no to drugs, how are you gonna just tell me to say no to drugs if you
10:47 haven't given me anything to say yes to? You gotta give me something to say yes
10:51 to my future, yes to my purpose, because I come alive when I come to my purpose. If
10:57 I don't know who I am and what I'm supposed to do, yeah you know, but once I
11:06 come into the know I am intoxicated with my purpose. I am intoxicated when I'm on
11:13 assignment. I am intoxicated when I'm in my journey. I can, when the anointing is
11:19 upon me I get drunk in the Holy Ghost. I'm just telling you, you can get drunk
11:22 tears will start welling up in your eyes, the kind of experience and atmosphere
11:27 that we just came out of and and are still in, something happens in that
11:32 atmosphere and I don't think about any kinds of anything that I need to stop
11:38 when something greater is in the room. When the greater is there everything
11:44 that is less than begins to dissipate in your mind. It's easy to stop hanging out
11:50 with Mr. Right Now and Miss Right Now when Mr. Right and Miss Right show up. If
11:58 I got something better to go to, I mean you and you and you and Mr. Right Now, Miss
12:04 Right Now, they own their come up, but their come up is pulling you down. But
12:10 Mr. Right Now, Miss Right Now can help you take the chaos of your life, set
12:16 things in order, put a fire up under you, make you start believing in yourself, you
12:21 start bringing your behind home, getting in the bed at a decent time, rising up
12:26 and working on something that's gonna transform your destiny. When you are with
12:30 the right person, they make you better, they make you better, they make you
12:36 better. And if you're with the wrong person, the wrong clout, the wrong witch,
12:41 they curse your life. And it's easy to quit the wrong when you got the right in
12:50 you. Jesus says, "Follow me." Greater is here. Greater, greater, greater is here.
12:58 Start walking behind greater. Start walking behind greater. He just said,
13:02 "Follow me, follow me, follow me." And he leads us into his presence in a wonderful
13:08 way. There are certain things that will never happen to you or for you until you
13:13 go. Every opportunity that has ever been afforded to me has happened because I've
13:20 gone somewhere. He'll tell Abraham who didn't have two
13:24 nickels to rub together, "Abraham, get up. Leave the place where you are. Your
13:30 destiny is not back here in the country. I got something for you in the big city.
13:33 Follow me." He gave you a vision of some place and another. Now you might have
13:38 gotten all of your equipment of everything that you need to get trained
13:40 in right where you were and then God will call you to another place. But if
13:44 you don't bust a move, you can blow your destiny. Start. Start moving toward it.
13:50 Start walking in the direction of it. Luke chapter 17 and verse 14, this is
13:54 Jesus talking to ten lepers that he cleansed. And notice, he looked at them
13:58 and he said, "Go show yourselves to the priests." He didn't say, "Just hang around
14:01 me. Go show yourselves to the priests." That was based on a Levitical law to
14:06 where if they'd been cleansed they had to show themselves to priests. Well, they
14:09 still had the leprosy at the time and he says, "Go show yourselves." Jesus is
14:13 speaking in faith and as they went, they were cleansed of their leprosy. As they
14:18 went, as they put one foot in front of the other, their healing began to break
14:23 forth. As they started, God started. When they started, God started. When they
14:28 started, God started. He just said, "Bust a move. Start walking and then I'll let
14:33 you'll inhabit your miracle." When you start walking, you'll walk out of
14:39 your, your darkness into your destiny. If you'll just start walking, if you'll just
14:44 start walking, you will walk out of your calamity into your calling. If you will
14:48 just start walking, you will walk out of the disaster that you've been dealing
14:54 with and come into a destiny that God has already prepared but you got to bust
14:59 a move. You're trying to get healed from something? Get a move on. Get a move on.
15:04 You always feel better when you get up and get out. I'm just sorry. When you lay
15:08 around in the bed, you're laying around in the bed too, too long, it'll take your
15:11 energy. The very thing that gives you energy under normal circumstances, if you
15:15 overstay your time, it'll sap your energy and you'll get weaker and weaker and God
15:19 says, "Get up, get up, get up and go to a place that I will show you and I will go
15:23 with you." And in your going, that's when you get healed. That's when you get healed.
15:28 I remember I was, I was there with, with Dodie Osteen one week and I was sitting
15:34 on the front row with her, I was speaking that service and she, she, she began to
15:41 weep and I said, "Dodie, what's wrong?" And I think at that time she said, "This is the
15:46 30th anniversary of God miraculously healing me of stage 4 liver cancer. No
15:53 operation, no medicine, God touched her body." But her husband, John Osteen, as she
15:59 was lying in the bed and had dribbled up to 89 pounds, could barely hold anything
16:05 on her stomach and all of a sudden he said to her, "The bed is not a place for
16:11 well people and if you're believing God that you're well," he says, "why don't you
16:15 get up and go to the hospital and pray for sick people?" And this weak, frail, 89
16:21 pound woman got up and went to the hospital and began to pray for other
16:27 sick people and somehow in the process of her going to pray for other sick
16:34 people, God healed her body. If you will go, start, just start, just start and you
16:43 will be surprised as to what will happen when you go. Can you imagine that some
16:50 people's destiny is dependent upon somebody's going? I will never forget as
16:57 a teenager, I would wake up and pray for an hour in English and an hour in other
17:02 tongues and one morning when I woke up, I woke up and I saw in this vision as I
17:09 was praying in the Holy Ghost, I saw the interpretation. And they were people from
17:15 various places around the world, some of them with dots in the middle of their
17:18 forehead and I could tell by turbans on their head and various other kinds of
17:23 tribal dressing that this was not America. I realized that and it started
17:29 off as a field full of golden looking wheat and it was blowing in the wind and
17:36 all of a sudden the wheat that was blowing in the wind turned into hands
17:40 beckoning saying, "come, come, I'm a teenager." And God began to show me, "you're
17:47 gonna have to go because there's a need that is in some places around the world
17:51 and I'm putting a word in your mouth now for you then." And I had to prepare, I
17:57 started then for what God would do years down the road and I didn't ask for the
18:03 invitations, the wheat started waving and they turned into hands and they were
18:10 people that didn't look like me and it was amazing to be able to see but
18:15 something in the destiny of some of those people was absolutely impacted and
18:21 affected because I was obedient to go. And I was, I never for a minute, I was
18:27 in a place called New Haven, Connecticut a number of years ago and I had never
18:33 been there before and there were 80 different nations represented in this
18:37 place where I was ministering and all of a sudden I got up to minister and the
18:41 Spirit of the Lord came upon me and then I turned to this woman and began to
18:44 prophesy out of my spirit. I saw in the spirit never seen her before in my life,
18:48 I said "You work for the Postal Service and you're dying on the inside because
18:52 that's not what God called you to do." And God unveiled and unpeeled her destiny of
18:58 what she was supposed to do. She screamed, a scream came out of her belly like I've
19:03 never heard before that makes your blood curdle because something broke on the
19:07 inside of her when she heard somebody from Atlanta, Georgia come and prophesy
19:12 life into her church. It's amazing, the pastor of that particular church
19:17 was a white gentleman old enough to be my father at the time and the Spirit of
19:22 God came so strongly on me in that service he asked me after the service
19:26 "Will you become my mentor?" Now let me say this, there's a difference between a
19:32 coach and a mentor. A coach helps you to do better what you do, they work on skill,
19:38 they work on performance, you get a vocal coach, you get a coach to help you on a
19:42 job to improve a particular skill, but a mentor helps to develop you. They work on
19:49 your character, they help the person to become better, the coach helps the skill
19:54 to become better, you need both a coach and a mentor. So if you're doing
19:59 something you need both a coach and a mentor, one that helps you to become
20:03 better and the other one that helps you to sharpen the skill of what you do to
20:08 make that better. So God never starts unveiling certain things in us unless
20:14 you start, you have to start. Start sharing your testimony even though you're
20:19 afraid to share it the first time, start reaching out to pray for somebody even
20:23 though it makes you shut up because you don't know how they are going to react
20:26 to you, start anyway, start inviting somebody to church, go to your
20:31 neighborhood and the place where you work or the place that you go to school,
20:34 start where you are, start where you are. Don't ask God to send you to China and
20:39 you've never been next door, start, start where you are, start right where you are,
20:46 start where you are. Then here's a principle that I want to give you, don't
20:51 try, train, don't try, train, train, train for where you want to go, you need to
20:58 train somewhere. Back in the day, you know, you didn't just do something, you had
21:03 somebody that you trained under, you were an apprentice under that person. Now
21:08 listen, before you go into business for yourself, work for somebody else, learn
21:12 on their dime because you're gonna make a lot of mistakes if you just start out
21:17 from scratch and you've never worked for anybody else because you're so anxious
21:19 to be your own boss. Humble yourself, come off your high horse, put on some work
21:24 clothes, don't be afraid to get greasy and dirty and work for somebody else so
21:28 you can learn the lessons and save yourself some time and money and go and
21:34 just work for them. But don't try, train. You try and then you fail, you try, you
21:40 fail, you try, you fail, train, train for it. Listen, if I want to run a marathon
21:45 that is 26.2 miles, I don't, if I've been a couch potato, I can't just get up and
21:51 run 26.2 miles, but I can train starting Monday morning, I can start my training
22:00 program and I can let my goal be that first week to run one mile, just one mile
22:06 the first week. The second week I'm working on two miles, the third week I'm
22:09 working on three miles, the fourth week I'm training on mile number four, the
22:13 fifth week I'm training on mile number five. Do you understand the picture? I'm
22:17 training week by week, little by little, it's a diligence day by day by day by
22:22 day, this whole week I'm not doing it, I'm just, it's just one degree better, just
22:26 one degree better, just one degree better and I'm working on the first mile the
22:29 whole week until the first week I'm able to run a mile and the second week I'm
22:34 working on my second mile. 26 weeks down the road I'm ready for the marathon now.
22:39 You can't start three days before the marathon and say well I tried. Now you
22:45 done had a heat stroke sitting out on the curb with your head down because you
22:49 didn't train for where you were going. Don't try train, don't try train, you have
22:56 to train for where you're going. Find a trainer, help somebody to get you trained
23:01 for the marathon that you want to run, it's little by little. You see life by
23:06 the inches a cinch but life by the yard is hard. Take it little by little,
23:10 incremental increases day by day, just a little but start, start, start. I'm too big
23:17 to go in the gym, start. Start at home lifting your arms, get two frying pans, up
23:27 down, up down.
23:30 You've been picking up the frying pan, I know you can lift a frying pan.
23:36 I love something that Renzo Gracie said, he said a black belt in martial arts is
23:47 just a white belt who never quits. I mean I took karate, I took judo, both of them
23:53 I started as a white belt. I didn't stay a white belt but I started there. You got
23:56 to start somewhere, you have to start somewhere. The key is start. You can make
24:03 something out of somebody if they'll start but if you won't start you can't
24:07 get better, you cannot get better. Now let me teach you about the process of Jesus.
24:12 The process of Jesus was threefold, learn, do, and teach. Learn, do, teach. Learn, do,
24:20 teach. You see, there's questions here that I want you to see as we learn from the
24:24 process of Jesus, what do you need to learn or what are you learning? You ought
24:28 to always be a lifelong learner, you ought to be learning something and once
24:32 you learn something then you can do something. Once you learn how to clean,
24:37 you don't just look at it and say you know I know how to do it, yeah I know how
24:42 to clean the bathroom, prove it. Yeah I know how to cook, prove it. Yeah I know
24:50 how to love and be loyal, prove it. Once you learn something then you do it. You
24:57 don't do things that you've not first learned, you learn then you do then you
25:03 teach. And listen, you don't have an authority, a real authority, there are
25:08 some exceptions to this but you don't have a real authority to teach something
25:11 that you've never done. This is why with children, children don't do what you say
25:18 they do what they see, you teach what you know but they will learn what you are
25:23 and that's why you have to learn, do it and then teach it in that order. Learn, do,
25:31 teach. What are you learning? What are you doing with what you've learned and who
25:40 now are you teaching? They represent the three distinct phases of life. I call
25:47 them earning, I meant learning, earning and returning. Learning, earning and
25:55 returning. The first third of your life you spend learning and there's some
25:58 overlap. The second step is an earning phase and the third phase is a
26:06 returning phase and you're both earning and returning all at the same time
26:10 there's some overlaps of them but the first one is learning then earning then
26:14 returning and you're doing all three you can do all three at the same time you
26:20 can be returning into somebody else and then somebody else's student to where
26:23 you're learning from them. Always have somebody ahead of you, always have
26:29 somebody who is ahead of you, always have somebody who's ahead of you so that it
26:34 gives you something to aspire to, so that it gives you something to be able to
26:38 ameliorate, to become better, to make yourself better so that they become your
26:43 come-up, your inspiration for your come-up. Just as soon as you thought that
26:46 you had it then you see somebody else and BAM! I've seen guys you know all
26:51 puffed up and swollen in the gym and then there's somebody come in that's bigger
26:54 than them and then they look whoo and you know they thought they were doing
26:59 something and now somebody else it puts it in perspective for you and we always
27:03 need to be in that process of learning, earning and returning or where you learn
27:10 you do and you teach. What are you learning? What are you doing with what
27:16 you learn? And who are you teaching? All three it's not one or it's all three.
27:23 Learning, doing, teaching. That was the process of Jesus and we're discovering
27:29 here as Dr. Luke is recording he says Jesus began both to do and to teach. He
27:36 couldn't do it if he hadn't learned it. He learned it then he did it then he
27:42 taught it. Thomas Merton said that the biggest human temptation is to settle
27:47 for too little. I can't tell you how many people that I've seen that have settled
27:50 for too little but the biggest human temptation is to settle for too little,
27:55 to settle for too little. Usain Bolt said I trained four years to run nine seconds.
28:04 He trained for four years to run nine seconds. Four years. But them long legs
28:14 started running and he got the gold and kept getting the gold but four years and
28:19 there are people that will look at something that you've done a long time
28:22 and you can tell it when you when you're a real pro because you make something
28:25 difficult look easy and another characteristics of a pro is that they
28:33 can do it consistently. It's not a hit or miss they do it with consistency,
28:39 consistency. And let me just say this that whenever you start there will
28:44 always be distractions on your journey. There's gonna be somebody when you I
28:48 mean you try to you when you when you on the come up there's somebody else around
28:52 you there's not interested in being on the come up. They still want to remember
28:57 when you were back in the day doing some stuff you had no business doing and
29:00 they're trying to call you back to that stuff. They're still trying to because
29:04 they don't want to grow and they're trying to pull you back to where y'all
29:08 used to all have fun together but you're not that person anymore. So when God
29:12 gives you something that you're working on that is taking you forward and they
29:15 want to still stay here it means that at some point God's going to have to make
29:21 them reject you and that's when human beings rejection becomes God's direction
29:27 and it's an often way that he he works. And let me just give you the that God
29:32 allows people to reject you for three main reasons. These are the three primary
29:36 reasons. Number one either they are not good for you, they are not good to you, or
29:41 they are not good for what he is doing in you and has prepared for you in your
29:47 future. Either they're not good for you doesn't mean that they were terrible
29:50 person they're just not good for you. I mean because you got to have people
29:53 that's for you that that who have a grace to deal with who you are. They're
30:00 good for you and you have to be good for them. Either they are not good for you
30:03 they're not good to you or they are not good for what God is doing in you and so
30:09 God will let you become rejected as a result of that. But I want you to get the
30:15 process of Jesus the process of Jesus of what you learn you do and you teach.
30:21 But here here it is for just to give us as we start some things that might have
30:27 been in your heart here's the process start where you are there's no other
30:30 place that you can start you can't start where somebody else is you start where
30:34 you are you don't walk into an organization want to start where the CEO
30:37 is you have to start where you are you're not where they are start where
30:42 you are then use what you have you can't use what you don't have let me tell you
30:47 this God will always use something that you have right now to build your future
30:53 God will always use something that you have right now to build your future it
30:58 might be a determined spirit it might be resilience it might be the faith of God
31:02 that is in your heart God will use something that you have right now to
31:07 build your future God will use what you have not what you don't have so that's
31:11 why you can't give God that excuse use what you have not what you don't have
31:15 the third thing is you do all you can do do all you can do you can't do
31:20 everything but do all that you can do all that you can get number four when
31:24 that runs out pray and I'm not saying these in this particular order you might
31:28 need to start with prayer and say Lord God my feet God my feet show me where I
31:33 am show me what I have start there pray here's the next things study research
31:39 and discover that's the only way to be able to get better and you don't know
31:43 what what you're doing is good bad or indifferent if you don't study and see
