00:02 - What's going on everyone?
00:21 Mike Kadlik and Taylor Kiles here
00:23 with another episode of Pat's Daily
00:25 presented by Price Picks and Game Time.
00:28 We are back to preview the Patriots' third open OTA
00:32 of the off season.
00:33 Me and Taylor will be down in Foxborough tomorrow, Tuesday,
00:36 to get yet another look at the new look,
00:39 New England Patriots.
00:40 So Taylor, before we get started,
00:43 a very important question.
00:45 How the heck are you doing today?
00:46 How was your weekend?
00:47 I feel like we did the same exact show,
00:48 you know, just a week ago today,
00:50 but how are we doing?
00:51 You ready for another OTA down in Foxborough this week?
00:55 - Yes, sir, I'm good, buddy.
00:56 Enjoyed the nice weather that we actually got.
00:58 Got to be outside, soak up a little sun.
01:00 Oh, we're going to get to soak up some more sun,
01:02 hopefully at practice,
01:03 'cause you know those days,
01:04 it's hot down there on the field.
01:06 But I'm excited, man.
01:07 Yeah, it is kind of repetitive because OTAs,
01:09 there's not a whole lot that happens
01:11 in terms of like any change.
01:13 But you know, it's important to at least address
01:15 before we get into these practices,
01:16 what kind of things we're looking for
01:17 so people understand what to expect from us after practice.
01:21 And also just kind of the storylines heading in
01:22 because we did get a little bit of change
01:25 from the last time.
01:25 So we're going to be hitting on a lot of the same topics,
01:28 but with a little extra context
01:29 based on what we saw during last week's session.
01:32 - A killer sunburn for myself last week.
01:35 I have to make sure I put the sunblock on the forehead.
01:38 I didn't wear a hat.
01:40 It was bad.
01:41 I got in the shower when I got home
01:42 and I felt like I was burning my face off.
01:44 So we will-
01:44 - You brought my sunhide for that extra protection,
01:47 the old Tommy Curry?
01:48 - Yeah, I might have to rock that.
01:50 We're learning.
01:51 We're getting used to it.
01:52 We're back in the swing of things.
01:53 But you're right too,
01:53 because it does get a little repetitive
01:55 because there are many storylines,
01:59 but they're all kind of the same
02:00 and you don't get a ton of change practice to practice.
02:03 But we were still able to sort of
02:05 dig a couple of things out here
02:06 and see sort of what new,
02:08 what changes we're looking at this week
02:11 compared to last week.
02:12 And the first, again, it's Drake May
02:14 and it's the quarterbacks.
02:15 But it's a little bit different,
02:18 I guess, a lens to look at from last week.
02:20 Because last week we talked about
02:22 what kind of reps is Drake May going to get?
02:24 Is he going to be shut out by,
02:27 not shut out by, but still behind Bailey Zappi?
02:29 And is Joe Milton going to continue
02:31 to sort of leak in there?
02:32 And Joe Milton wasn't there.
02:34 And Drake May looked really good.
02:38 I mean, as far as,
02:39 we talked about it here on Press Pass
02:41 on our standups down at Foxport.
02:43 But we saw the no-look pass
02:44 and we saw the short game was really solid.
02:47 The footwork continues to look slow but improved.
02:51 And so I'm curious what you think
02:54 about the quarterback reps,
02:55 but also kind of just what's next
02:58 for Drake May in this development?
03:00 What more can we see this week compared to last?
03:03 And do you think he deserves to jump Bailey Zappi
03:06 in that rotation and really sort of get those
03:08 quote unquote second team, second reps?
03:11 - First, when it comes to Drake's mechanics,
03:13 I've gotten to the point where like,
03:15 I'm not gonna really, if it's bad, I'll address it.
03:18 If there's something that's really glaringly wrong.
03:20 But like, man, I'm not really a quarterback guru.
03:24 Like on film, it's a little bit easier to see
03:25 when the results and you can kind of tie it
03:27 into being like, okay, this pass sprayed, what happened?
03:30 You know, sometimes that can be helpful.
03:32 But when it comes to practices,
03:33 we don't know what he's being told to do.
03:35 We don't know if he's being told, you know,
03:37 be more deliberate.
03:38 The whole stuff with his release,
03:40 like if you wanna really see a long release,
03:42 look at Trevor Lawrence, man.
03:44 It's just like some of these longer quarterbacks
03:46 physically take longer to get the ball out.
03:48 I know I talked about that with Derek Classen
03:50 before Drake was taken.
03:52 We went through all the quarterbacks in a film session
03:53 and I asked him, you know,
03:54 is there anything that you can fix?
03:56 And there are certain things
03:57 where Drake will have the ball dip sometimes.
03:59 And those are things I know he's aware of.
04:00 But for the most part, man,
04:02 I'm so sick of hearing people talk about,
04:05 oh, his mechanics look so much better and all.
04:07 It's like, most of us don't know.
04:09 We have no idea.
04:10 So truly, like, unless you are a coach,
04:12 I don't wanna hear it at this point.
04:14 I'm so done with that.
04:16 You know, so as long as the results
04:18 are where they need to be,
04:19 I don't really care how it looks.
04:21 That's for Alex Van Pelt to decide.
04:23 But like you said, in terms of what we saw on the field,
04:25 I thought it did look good.
04:26 Like you mentioned, the short game,
04:27 he had the really nice connection downfield
04:29 to Tyquan Thornton, and that's notable.
04:31 But for me, I know he can do that stuff.
04:33 Like the downfield accuracy,
04:35 I know that's what you're looking for in Drake May.
04:38 I wanted to see the short stuff.
04:39 And I was really encouraged by not just the accuracy
04:42 where we were seeing like throw after throw,
04:44 some of these guys were blanketed
04:45 and he's throwing it far out
04:47 so that his guys can be the only ones to get it,
04:49 or at least so that, you know, it's not behind,
04:51 which is what you saw a lot in college.
04:53 In the short game, he was putting passes
04:55 on the back hip of his receivers.
04:57 And in the NFL, those turn into incompletions
04:59 or just way tougher grabs than they need to be.
05:01 Even the first practice we saw in rookie mini camp,
05:03 he acknowledged that Javon Baker and Jalen Polk
05:05 had to make some tougher catches
05:07 because he wasn't putting the ball in the right spots.
05:09 So that progression I really liked.
05:11 The intelligence, which I've been talking about for months,
05:13 is something I think he really doesn't get enough credit for.
05:16 The ability to, and especially in the quick game,
05:17 make these split second decisions
05:19 where you are pumping someone open
05:21 or a pressure comes in and you're throwing it out,
05:23 which sounded like, based on Jacoby Bursette's response,
05:25 where he gave him a dap,
05:27 that that was something he'd improved
05:28 from an earlier practice.
05:29 So these things that you really can see his IQ live
05:33 and in person is really exciting.
05:35 I do think obviously he deserves more reps than Bailey Zappi.
05:38 I also think we saw that with Joe Milton out,
05:40 it felt like he really did get a chance
05:42 to string good plays together or plays period together.
05:46 You'd have Jacoby Bursette having his sessions,
05:48 but it felt like he was getting a handful of throws.
05:51 Then May, it felt like was getting a few more than that,
05:53 especially when they split up
05:54 and it was really just kind of Zappi on one field by himself
05:57 with really the projected backup.
05:59 So yeah, of course, I think he deserves more reps,
06:02 especially if he continues to improve.
06:04 And it gets to the point where you're saying,
06:05 okay, he's starting to push
06:07 and he looking as good, if not better,
06:09 than Jacoby at some points.
06:11 Jacoby still looks far and away the most consistent
06:13 and he should be the projected starter
06:15 and it should be close right now.
06:17 But at the same time,
06:18 if Drake continues to look better and better
06:20 and his talent starts to take over
06:22 because his mind is slowing down,
06:24 then it gets to the point where it's like,
06:25 he's gonna make rookie mistakes.
06:26 You still want him to get live reps
06:28 so that he can learn from them
06:29 'cause this is a mentally tough guy.
06:31 But yeah, I hope he is doing the things behind the scene
06:34 where he can continue to push to make it more comfortable
06:37 for him to be that number two and maybe the number one.
06:40 But also I understand if right now
06:42 they want these young guys in OTAs to earn their reps
06:45 while you do see guys like Juju and Zappy
06:48 who probably aren't in the long-term plans
06:50 really getting more of those number two reps
06:52 just because it's OTAs, there's competition,
06:54 but you're really more learning
06:55 and you want things to stay in rhythm
06:57 and those guys kind of help with that.
06:59 But again, if Drake keeps playing well,
07:01 I don't really think there's a reason
07:02 to be giving Zappy valuable reps
07:03 with the guys who are actually gonna be on the field.
07:06 - Right, and you mentioned him saying
07:09 that he was throwing passes behind guys
07:11 like Jalen Polk and Javon Baker.
07:12 That's just repetition
07:14 and that's just getting used to how these guys run routes,
07:17 how they like to sort of read coverage
07:19 versus how you like to read coverage
07:21 and where you like to put the football.
07:22 And so that's just gonna come with repetition, repetition,
07:25 which we saw last-
07:26 - And he's seen the Justice League footwork as well.
07:27 That's something he also mentioned.
07:28 - Correct, yep, and no, that too,
07:30 but I mean, we saw last Wednesday,
07:32 the last three offensive players off the field
07:34 were Drake May, Jalen Polk, and Javon Baker.
07:36 Like they're trying to get these guys in.
07:38 They wanna get comfortable with each other
07:40 and you see it translate to the field already.
07:42 And I forget who they were.
07:43 I don't know if it was one of those two guys,
07:45 but you mentioned throwing guys open.
07:46 Like there were two or three dig routes
07:48 where he is just putting it
07:49 where only that receiver can get it,
07:51 even in good coverage with the defender,
07:54 Drake May's just throwing guys open.
07:55 So the talent, the intangible, like, you know,
07:59 strong arm, putting it where he wants to go,
08:01 like all that stuff's there.
08:02 It's gonna just become a matter of, you know,
08:04 putting it all together with the footwork,
08:05 with the playbook and things like that.
08:07 But I mean, I like what you said about, you know,
08:09 Jacoby's gonna be the starter,
08:11 at least to start the season.
08:12 We all think he seems more comfortable.
08:14 It makes a ton of sense, but man, if,
08:17 and I know it was just one practice
08:18 that we really got excited about,
08:19 but if Drake May can kind of string this together,
08:22 I don't see why you have to sit him that long.
08:25 Like, yes, you know, right.
08:29 And I know, and I look at a guy like Justin Herbert in LA,
08:31 who I've sort of comped Drake May to him all along.
08:34 Just the, you know, big body, athletic,
08:38 puts the ball where he wants to.
08:40 Herbert was seen as a developmental guy in LA,
08:42 and he was sitting behind Tyron Taylor.
08:44 And, you know, circumstances happened,
08:47 Tyron got stabbed in the lung or whatever would happen.
08:49 And then all of a sudden,
08:50 Justin Herbert goes in and the first game,
08:52 he almost beats the Chiefs.
08:53 And he plays and he was outstanding.
08:55 And he set the rookie record for touchdown passes,
08:57 what have you.
08:58 Like the same thing could happen with Drake May.
09:00 Now, are the Patriots as talented
09:02 as that Chargers team was?
09:03 Not exactly, but it could turn into something like that.
09:06 And I'm not saying Jacoby's gonna get hurt,
09:07 but I'm saying that that type of player,
09:09 when you have all those, you know,
09:11 you have the, I guess the talent like those guys do,
09:15 it can translate rather quickly.
09:16 So we'll obviously have to wait and see what happens.
09:19 I think they're in a good spot quarterback wise
09:22 with what they have in Jacoby and Drake May.
09:24 And I look at May too, he's so young.
09:28 So there's not really a,
09:29 like I looked at Mac Jones last year, right?
09:33 And he was so nervous, maybe is the right way to put it.
09:37 Like he had these battle scars.
09:39 He had these wounds where it's like, he gets, you know,
09:42 things don't go his way and he gets nervous and jittery
09:44 and he makes a stupid mistake and throws it away.
09:45 Like, and obviously we're not gonna see that with May yet,
09:48 but it's comforting to know that he is like
09:51 a moldable piece of clay that doesn't have all that,
09:54 you know, excess baggage that we saw
09:56 with Mac Jones last year.
09:57 So in general, very happy
09:59 with the quarterback position so far.
10:02 I wanna add that, and you mentioned a little bit,
10:05 or one of us said it,
10:06 where Joe Milton wasn't there last week.
10:08 - Yeah.
10:09 - Does Joe Milton being at practice Tuesday,
10:12 like, does that affect anything with May?
10:13 Do you, not affect in a bad way,
10:15 but like, how do you think the reps get split up?
10:16 Do you think that should be,
10:18 not so much cause for concern, but, you know,
10:21 I guess, how do you see it or how should it go
10:24 with four guys tomorrow instead of three from last week?
10:26 - Yeah, no, that's a fair question.
10:28 And I was wondering the same thing,
10:29 especially if Drake is making more progress
10:31 and you're like, we really do wanna get this guy reps.
10:34 Again, I'm not anticipating
10:35 that Drake is gonna be the number two.
10:37 I still think it's gonna be the veterans
10:38 kinda getting the nod until we get into maybe mini camp
10:41 and even maybe even to the summer,
10:43 once we really get to training camp.
10:44 And it's like, all right, now, you know, pads are on,
10:47 we're still in the install phase,
10:48 but we're really, it's about heavier competition
10:51 cause it's a little higher pace.
10:53 - Right.
10:54 - Really don't know.
10:55 I feel like you don't wanna take it away from Drake May.
10:57 I think if anything, it would be like what we saw last time
11:00 where it kinda more eats into Bailey Zappi's reps
11:02 where he was taking the majority of reps on that other field
11:05 and it felt more like it was Jacoby
11:07 and Drake on the other,
11:08 which is what we saw even when Joe Milton was there,
11:10 it was Joe and Zappi and then Jacoby and Drake.
11:13 And also maybe it just means
11:15 that Milton doesn't get as many reps
11:17 as maybe we saw in that first practice
11:19 where they were all together,
11:20 where instead of, you know, he wasn't getting like 10,
11:23 but maybe it's really just three or four.
11:25 That's gonna be an interesting one to watch again,
11:27 because he missed time and maybe, you know,
11:29 Drake gained ground and I don't know, it's weird.
11:32 Bottom line, Joe Milton should not affect Drake May's reps,
11:36 although I'm sure he'll be in the lineup.
11:38 - Yeah. - Interesting one to see.
11:39 It's tough to project,
11:40 but I just don't think he's gonna get many reps at all
11:42 at the end of the day.
11:42 - And I, look, I still think the way the room is set up
11:46 right now makes sense.
11:48 And there's so much pushback right now
11:50 on why are there four quarterbacks?
11:51 Why is Bailey Zappi around?
11:52 Like we talked about it last week,
11:54 but I just wanna reiterate again,
11:55 like the way, and the way the core plan is right now
11:59 makes a ton of sense to me anyway.
12:02 And I think it should to most people
12:03 with four guys, not three,
12:05 it's June 3rd, there's so much football left to play.
12:09 You're not, you know,
12:10 you're not struggling for roster spots right now.
12:12 I guess we can, we'll touch on it
12:13 when we get to the offensive line,
12:14 but Andrew Stuber was waived this morning.
12:16 So like, there's still one spot left.
12:18 It's not like you're feening to cut a quarterback.
12:20 And I think Bailey Zappi knows his place.
12:22 I think everybody in that room, you know,
12:24 knows what's kind of going on right now.
12:25 And the quarterbacks or the rookies are last,
12:28 the veterans are first, because it's June.
12:31 Rousset and Zappi get the ones and twos.
12:33 Zappi's your quote unquote backup.
12:35 Drake May is the developmental guy.
12:37 And Joe Milton's really the,
12:39 I guess more of a developmental guy,
12:41 but the late round pick who doesn't see a lot of reps,
12:43 but is kind of around for the ride.
12:45 It could be a camp arm.
12:46 And so when the four of them are together,
12:48 it's Brousset, then it's Zappi,
12:51 who still gets those sort of backup reps with the veterans
12:53 in case push comes to shove
12:54 and Brousset gets hurt, what have you.
12:55 And Zappi's the backup.
12:58 And Drake May's the guy you're trying to get ready
13:00 for your future.
13:01 So he's third, but they split up into those two,
13:03 you know, the two fields that we keep seeing.
13:05 It's Brousset and then it's May,
13:07 because he still needs to continue to develop under Jacoby
13:10 and with the sort of Alex Van Pelt
13:13 and those sort of, I guess, more prominent coaches.
13:17 Where on the other side, it's the developmental guys
13:19 with Bailey Zappi, who's there as a, I guess,
13:21 a backup and a camp arm,
13:23 and Joe Milton, who's there in the same.
13:24 So again, I don't think that there should be this rush
13:27 to cut Bailey Zappi, and I don't think there should
13:29 at all be a rush to cut Joe Milton,
13:31 who's a six round pick, who is really here to just,
13:34 you know, be an arm and get footballs out there
13:36 or what have you.
13:37 So I think they're in a good place right now,
13:39 quarterback room wise.
13:39 I think everybody understands their role.
13:41 So there, you know, there really doesn't have to be this,
13:44 this outcry to get rid of Bailey Zappi.
13:47 - Yeah, and I guess the one interesting thing is that
13:50 Gerard Mayo did make it sound like he does want to cut it
13:53 down three quarterbacks, which I guess does make sense,
13:55 especially if you're splitting reps with the top guys.
13:57 Like even last year they had Mack, they had Zappi,
14:00 and then they had, who was it at that time?
14:02 It was Trace McSorley.
14:04 So finding reps for four quarterbacks is difficult,
14:07 especially when you have a young guy where,
14:09 Joe Milton, he is talented, you want to get him reps,
14:11 but I think it all just is incumbent on how far along
14:13 Drake May is in his growth.
14:15 If it feels like he's making steady progress
14:17 where he really does understand the offense,
14:19 and you're more worried about,
14:21 can he do it on the field consistently,
14:22 rather than like, oh, his head is swimming.
14:25 There's so much, like we just need a veteran
14:26 who knows how to run an NFL offense.
14:28 If Drake can pass that test,
14:30 then I could see Bailey Zappi getting cut
14:31 just because Joe Milton does have a lot of talent,
14:34 and you'd like to see him get some opportunities.
14:36 But also, Joe Milton cannot physically operate
14:38 an NFL offense.
14:39 I mean, even still, we saw Trace McSorley.
14:41 He wasn't really great either.
14:42 Like anytime he came in, it was just like,
14:44 pass, no offense, pass were flying everywhere.
14:47 So it wasn't like, you know, those third and fourth groups
14:49 were getting great consistency either.
14:51 But yeah, I think it'll maybe be a combination
14:53 of Joe Milton, but really at the end of the day,
14:55 is Drake someone where you're confident
14:57 this really is a two quarterback race,
14:59 and if Kobe were to get hurt and be your starter,
15:02 you're not really worried about Drake May
15:04 being thrust into a role.
15:06 It's more just like, yeah, we'd rather have him,
15:08 you know, a slow entrance into the NFL,
15:11 but you know, if push comes to shove,
15:12 we'd rather him out there than Bailey Zappi
15:14 because he gives us a better chance to win.
15:16 - Yeah, I think that's, you hit it on the head.
15:18 It's really gonna depend on if they're comfortable
15:20 throwing Drake May into a fire,
15:21 if they really wanna take this slowly
15:23 and put him in the perfect position
15:26 where it may be worth keeping Zappi around
15:28 to be that backup in, you know, in an emergency situation,
15:31 and Drake May's inactive until, you know,
15:33 until they wanna really, I guess, release him
15:36 and throw him into the fire, what have you.
15:38 So that's it for the-
15:39 - You can also literally sign a veteran backup.
15:40 I kind of keep forgetting that
15:41 just 'cause I'm so used to Bailey Zappi
15:43 and being like, well, you have a guy
15:44 who's won games in the NFL.
15:46 It's not that crazy to keep him around,
15:47 but at the same time, if you feel, you know,
15:49 maybe Drake isn't ready and we already cut Zappi,
15:52 one, there's no promise that Zappi's
15:53 gonna get signed elsewhere, if we're being totally honest.
15:56 And also, like I said, you can still usually
15:58 find guys on the market if you really need a veteran.
16:00 So just putting that out there as well.
16:02 - Yeah.
16:03 Yeah, so that's the quarterbacks.
16:04 We're gonna get into the rest of the offense,
16:06 interior offensive line, wide receivers, what have you.
16:08 But first, let's listen to a quick message

16:53 'cause dude has been absolutely killing it.
16:55 I'm also gonna take Caitlin Clark

17:11 Pick more, pick less.
17:13 It's that easy.
17:14 - Two weeks ago, we saw Nick Leverett and Sidney So
17:21 taking the majority of the reps on the interior
17:22 at both left and right guard spots.
17:24 Next to David Andrews.
17:26 And last week we saw it turn into
17:29 Antonio Maffi and Michael Jordan.
17:31 So Sidney So I think was banged up.
17:33 He, I don't know, I don't wanna call it banged up,
17:35 but he was limited in practice.
17:36 He didn't do much.
17:37 So do you think this is just a precautionary thing,
17:40 or do you think this is a Cole Strange isn't ready yet,
17:44 so let's just kinda throw everybody into the fire
17:46 and see what sticks?
17:47 Do we, you know, see a little bit of
17:49 Leighton Robinson this week?
17:50 Like, what are you looking for?
17:52 What are you keeping your eyes on
17:53 on the interior offensive line on Tuesday,
17:56 during Tuesday's practice?
17:58 - I do think it'd be encouraging to see Sidney So
18:00 back out there and actually participating.
18:01 'Cause we did see him, he had the jersey on,
18:03 but he wasn't really doing much,
18:05 which was notable because when you saw pictures from earlier,
18:10 I think it was earlier that week
18:11 or at the end of last week in practice, one or the other,
18:13 it was the same setup that we saw
18:15 where it was Maffi at left guard
18:16 and Sidney So wasn't in the lineup,
18:18 which makes it feel like he's not participating
18:20 for a reason that might be health related.
18:22 Like we saw, he was actually there.
18:25 I will say it's way too early for me
18:28 to really read into this.
18:29 I understand that we need to take note of these things
18:33 because if it continues into the summer
18:35 and maybe even deeper, then obviously it's an issue,
18:37 but like, I don't care.
18:39 If Sidney So's not playing when there's no pads on
18:42 and it's OTAs, okay, so what?
18:45 You know, they're gonna be rotating guys
18:46 and chemistry is big, obviously,
18:49 but again, there's only so much you can simulate
18:51 in the trenches when you aren't able to go full speed.
18:53 So if it is a precautionary thing
18:55 and they just wanna get Antonio Maffi
18:57 some more opportunities, that's fine.
19:00 I do wanna see, again, Sidney So with the starting lineup,
19:02 I do think you wanna have some level of comfort there,
19:05 but if he's got something that's nicked up
19:07 and they just say, hey, we do not wanna risk it,
19:10 we saw what happened with Cole Strange last year
19:11 where he was kind of nicked up
19:14 and didn't participate at points
19:15 and then you have the knee injury
19:16 and then he misses the entire summer pretty much.
19:18 So I'm not reading too much into it.
19:20 I think it is something that, you know,
19:22 bookmark in your head, keep tabs on it
19:23 and we'll monitor the situation,
19:26 but not something I'm terribly moved by,
19:28 especially the offensive line, period.
19:29 If they're working different rotations, you know,
19:32 I think it's just to see how guys look,
19:33 like in terms of reps, just to see if they can move,
19:36 you know, left to right,
19:37 if it's something that looks uncomfortable for them.
19:40 I don't know, it's just, I feel like-
19:42 - It's not a red flag, I'm totally with you.
19:44 - This, yeah, I feel like I'm rambling
19:46 just 'cause I feel like we kind of make a big deal
19:49 out of nothing.
19:50 This is the time to do that stuff.
19:52 And like, we only see one practice a week.
19:54 And so we have to relay our observations
19:58 and put them in our notebooks and tweak them
20:00 and do them on these shows.
20:01 But it's not like it's, you know,
20:03 oh, they were the starters last week
20:05 and these are the starters this week.
20:06 And there's so many different, like, you know,
20:08 I mentioned the offensive line combinations
20:10 two or three times during our shows last week,
20:11 but these aren't different offensive line combinations.
20:15 These are just June football practices.
20:17 And so like, again, we have to do a show today.
20:20 We have to talk about it today,
20:21 but it's not necessarily a bad thing
20:23 that they're quote unquote trying guys out, you know,
20:25 in different combinations,
20:26 because they just want to see what they have on the whole,
20:29 the roster's up to 90 people right now.
20:30 Like you have to see-
20:32 - 89 'cause Andrew Stuber got cut.
20:34 - This is true, they are at 89.
20:36 So you have to see what works best
20:40 and this is the time to do it.
20:41 So they're probably, you know, again, I don't know,
20:43 but they could be throwing four, five, six, seven, whatever,
20:46 however many guys at card, at tackle, at center.
20:49 We saw Antonio Maffi take a bunch of center reps last week.
20:52 So like, this is the time to see what you have.
20:55 It's not a, oh no,
20:57 is Michael Jordan going to be the right guard?
20:58 It's, oh, maybe they're going to give this guy a shot
21:01 to win a spot and you know,
21:02 whether he's a starter or whether he's a backup,
21:04 again, this is the time to do it.
21:05 So they're doing it all the time.
21:07 We have to report on this stuff.
21:08 We have to bring it back and, you know,
21:09 give our observations,
21:10 but I don't think it's, you know, a cause for concern.
21:14 The only thing you have to look at is, you know,
21:15 when is Cole Strange going to be healthy?
21:17 And that's kind of why they have to do this rotation right
21:20 now is because you don't have your city.
21:23 So Cole Strange, you know, quote unquote duo,
21:26 that is going to be, I guess for certain, because again,
21:29 so might be banged up and strange.
21:31 It's going to miss the end of the year where like,
21:32 you know, it's going to be, you know,
21:34 Chuksa Cora for Mike on one who,
21:35 so that's not really a question.
21:37 And we don't even really use that as an observation
21:39 because there's no real news around the position.
21:41 So,
21:42 - And that only will distress the fact that they want
21:44 competition on the offensive line.
21:45 I think, you know, Mike and David Andrews,
21:48 they're not moving.
21:48 That's pretty obvious.
21:49 I think it let tackle.
21:50 They do want Chuksa to be the guy at least early on
21:53 because he's proven he can start in the NFL.
21:55 Like, I feel like it's always under the radar
21:57 and I understand the transition's hard, but I mean,
21:59 look what the Browns offense did last year with backups
22:02 at both of their tackle spots.
22:03 Like they lost the top three guys.
22:05 So I think that other than the guys you expect to kind of
22:09 be there, I think those interior spots, again,
22:11 other than city, so as well,
22:12 I think he played well enough last year that it warrants him
22:14 getting as many opportunities as possible,
22:16 but everybody else like Nick Levret, Michael Jordan,
22:20 Leighton Robinson, whoever it is at that right guard spot,
22:22 if city does stay on the left side,
22:24 Antonio Maffi, whoever it is,
22:26 none of those guys have earned a spot.
22:27 They haven't shown enough in a Patriots uniform to say,
22:29 Hey, these are guys we're pretty confident, you know,
22:32 that they're going to be the guys.
22:33 Again, Chuksa is the only one of that group
22:36 who has starting experience in the NFL.
22:37 It's not a backup or, you know,
22:39 a plug option like Nick Levret's been as a guy who truly
22:43 started and they were not necessarily looking to replace.
22:45 So again, there's going to be a battle.
22:47 And I think that's by design.
22:48 And they knew that this guard spot was going to maybe have a
22:51 little bit inconsistencies.
22:53 - Let's talk about those rookies then,
22:55 Caden Wallace, Leighton Robinson quickly,
22:57 because they haven't really been in those starting lineups,
23:01 just like the wide receivers haven't, which we'll get to.
23:05 Do you want to see that happen sooner rather than later?
23:06 Do you think Leighton Robinson should get added reps on the
23:09 inside? Should he be, I guess,
23:11 the next man up in this interior guard rotation?
23:13 And do you want to see what Caden Wallace has at left tackle?
23:16 And I know they're working in there sort of with the
23:18 backups, but is there any, again,
23:22 maybe this is trying to make a headline that's not,
23:24 but is there any cause for concern that maybe Caden Wallace
23:27 isn't getting enough reps at left tackle with the starters
23:29 where, you know, he's kind of,
23:30 you want that to be your next guy in at left tackle?
23:34 - Not really. I mean,
23:35 I think he's mixing a bit at the left tackle spot with the
23:38 top, with what looks like the top group.
23:41 Hasn't been a ton, but I feel like every once in a while,
23:42 you're like, oh, it looks like Caden's in there now.
23:44 I think Leighton, it's been the same kind of thing,
23:46 but like we said with the quarterbacks,
23:49 if Bailey Zappi is going to be over Drake May at all,
23:51 then I'm really not stressed if Caden Wallace and Leighton
23:54 Robinson aren't getting starting reps.
23:56 Like think about how quickly our opinions are going to
23:57 change once they have one-on-ones.
23:59 And we actually see these guys going at each other and
24:02 locking horns and it's like, oh,
24:03 Leighton Robinson's not letting anybody get by him.
24:06 Those are the kinds of things where, yeah,
24:08 then I would like to see him start getting reps with the
24:10 starters because he's earned it.
24:11 I mean,
24:12 I don't know what these offensive line coaches are
24:14 necessarily looking for on these days outside of purely
24:17 fundamentals and being like, hey, you know,
24:19 on this combo, you want to maybe take over faster,
24:22 whatever it is, you know, things like that.
24:23 The chemistry there does matter.
24:25 But again, we're not even going full speed yet.
24:27 So again, I think with the offensive line,
24:29 you start with the older guys,
24:31 just see if they can make sure that things are flowing
24:33 smoothly. And then these young guys, if they stand out,
24:36 that's when you start creeping into the starting lineup.
24:38 But I think they did a good enough job getting depth with
24:40 Chukso Corp or with Nick Leverett and Michael Jordan,
24:44 where, you know,
24:45 especially the guard guys aren't as proven because they
24:47 haven't ever really been true starters,
24:50 but they're guys who have NFL experience.
24:51 And that's something you couldn't say for the interior last
24:53 year outside of James Ference,
24:55 who couldn't even stay on the field for more than like a
24:56 drive at a time.
24:58 So yeah,
24:59 I'm really indifferent to how many reps the young guys get
25:02 with the starters, as long as,
25:03 especially Caden Wallace is getting opportunities to work
25:07 out and get his, you know,
25:08 fundamentals down on the left side of the line.
25:10 - A good way to transition to our next topic,
25:15 because you mentioned,
25:16 you don't care once until we put the pads on until the horn
25:22 is doing the type one Thornton thing again,
25:25 early in spring practices.
25:26 So let's talk about the wide receivers because like we said,
25:29 Ty,
25:30 Baker were great last week, you know,
25:34 great catches type on looks good.
25:36 His hands look good.
25:37 Footwork looks improved, what have you,
25:38 but we've seen this now for three straight, three sprints,
25:41 three straight Springs and three straight summers where
25:43 before they put the pads on type one,
25:45 there, he looks like he's kicking ass.
25:50 Is this time, is he going to emerge, whatever.
25:52 And then the pads come on and, you know,
25:54 shoulder hurts, what have you like,
25:56 that's sort of been the tail of the tape for type one
25:57 Thornton.
25:58 So first of all,
26:01 can him and Baker continue their hot streak right now and,
26:04 you know, get the road TAs and into mini camp with,
26:07 you know, being sort of the guys in the wide receiver room.
26:09 And frankly,
26:11 does it matter because we've seen this already and should we
26:13 get our hopes up with, with Ty Kwon or is this sort of just,
26:16 you know, par for the course, this is springtime type one,
26:18 and then he's going to come in and frankly disappoint again.
26:21 What, what do you think of that?
26:22 What do you think of the developments from those two in the
26:24 wide receiver room?
26:25 - Well, I will say first when it comes to receiver reps,
26:28 I lean more towards the quarterbacks where still,
26:31 like I said,
26:32 I do want Drake May to get reps because this is the time of
26:35 the year where you do see the quarterback and receiver
26:37 chemistry kind of start to build because there are things
26:40 that you can do in the timing and things like this is when
26:42 it's going to be at its easiest.
26:43 Whereas in the trenches,
26:45 it's almost not relevant because it's completely different
26:49 what their jobs actually are.
26:50 So I think we did see Javon Baker get some opportunities
26:53 with the ones,
26:54 cause he was catching passes from Jacoby percent.
26:55 So whether that was a rotational thing or not,
26:58 you're seeing that it feels like he's starting to creep up.
27:00 And I also think there is enough of that battle where
27:02 Taekwon has looked good,
27:04 but I think still that X receiver spot is pretty wide open.
27:07 I think all the receiver spots, frankly,
27:09 are wide open considering outside of the slot.
27:11 I think DeMario Douglas is locked in there and three
27:13 receiver sets are like KJ Osborne is the guy that you
27:16 default to cause he's a veteran and he's had success in the
27:19 NFL,
27:20 but you'd like to see Jalen Polk again,
27:21 kind of take some of his snaps.
27:23 With Taekwon,
27:25 I would expect him to continue to play well, of course,
27:28 progress isn't linear and maybe he'll take a step back and I
27:30 don't want us to overreact to that either, but you know,
27:33 with his speed and with his skillset,
27:35 this is the time where you want to see him thrive.
27:37 Javon Baker, it's kind of similar.
27:38 I think he'll look even better when you really could see the
27:40 physicality more when dads do come on.
27:43 But I mean,
27:44 he's such a dominant player that when there's less
27:46 physicality that is involved,
27:47 especially from defensive backs,
27:49 you're going to see him make the kind of plays he made on
27:51 the ball.
27:52 Jalen Polk hasn't really had a ton of chances to shine.
27:55 And that's due to a bunch of reasons.
27:56 There's a lot of mouths to feed.
27:58 There were some practices we've seen where the protection
28:00 kind of did collapse really quickly.
28:02 And then obviously that kind of ends the play really fast.
28:06 Cause I saw some questions about him.
28:08 He did have one, he did have one catch.
28:10 Do you remember what it was?
28:11 He had like one pretty impressive play last week.
28:13 I can't remember what it was.
28:16 - It's not coming to me off the top of my head,
28:17 but I know what you're talking about.
28:21 - You'd like to maybe see him do more, but again,
28:23 it's so early, you know,
28:24 other people are catching passes, not a huge deal,
28:26 but I do hope to see, especially Taekwon,
28:29 continue to build and emerge because it's year three.
28:32 Like if Javon Baker has a bad practice,
28:34 it's not really going to go off in your head as much
28:36 because that's expected.
28:38 Whereas with Taekwon, whether it's fair or not,
28:40 he really needs to step up.
28:42 Obviously still has a couple of years on his contract,
28:45 but with a room that's so crowded and has so many guys who
28:48 can contribute,
28:49 he really doesn't have a ton of space to aggress.
28:51 So again, if he has a bad practice,
28:53 I'm not going to freak out,
28:54 but it would be discouraging considering like you've been
28:56 around, man, this is when your skillset really shines.
29:00 You got to stand out consistently and be making plays.
29:02 Even if he has a drop, whatever,
29:04 bounce back and show that you can still be resilient and
29:06 make a play.
29:07 And I'm sure that they're trying to,
29:09 and they're trying to find him targets and ways to get
29:11 involved. So yeah, Taekwon keeps stacking.
29:13 Hopefully the same happens with Javon Baker and we see maybe
29:17 Jalen Pope starts to take another step as well.
29:19 - Yeah. The one thing too,
29:19 I want to add to the wide receivers before I let you finish
29:22 off any thoughts with again, guys like Pope,
29:24 even Jaheim Bell, who's a tight end, but you know,
29:26 we can call him a, a offensive skill position and kind of,
29:30 yeah,
29:30 I'm gonna still be watching for Taekwon on special teams.
29:35 I think that's huge.
29:36 I think that is an interesting sort of wrinkle into this
29:39 whole thing and an interesting way that he can continue to
29:42 earn himself a roster spot because, and same goes,
29:49 depending on if we see them sort of rep their new, you know,
29:52 kick return, I guess the way they're going to use kick,
29:55 kick return and kick off and things like that.
29:57 Jalen Rager could earn himself a spot being that sort of,
30:00 you know, kick return specialist.
30:01 So,
30:02 you know, that, that Gunner,
30:05 a guy who can really show that, you know,
30:07 his speed is valuable on special teams,
30:09 then maybe he can find his.
30:11 So anything else on the other weapons that you're looking
30:18 at, we're not this thing up with defense.
30:20 - I think you nailed it.
30:22 Yeah. The special team.
30:22 So again, Jayvon Baker on special teams as well.
30:24 Going to be interesting to see if he can carve out a role
30:26 there as well, just to earn himself, you know, more,
30:29 more good rapport and a good reputation with the coaching
30:32 staff.
30:33 They know that he can do multiple things.
30:34 That kind of stuff just makes coaches want to get you
30:37 involved as much as possible.
30:38 Cause they know you're really putting the work in and he's a
30:40 fourth round pick.
30:40 It's not like Jalen Polk,
30:41 where he doesn't really have to contribute on special teams.
30:43 Cause he's projected to have a big role.
30:45 He might be used as a returner.
30:46 It looks like he's gotten some chances to do that,
30:49 but especially with Taekwon.
30:50 If he can make any kind of impact with his speed on special
30:53 teams, that'd be huge for this team.
30:54 - All right.
30:56 Before we close out our OTA preview with some thoughts on
30:59 the Patriots defense,
31:00 let's listen in to a quick word from our friends at
31:02 game time.
31:03 - The NBA finals are finally here.
31:05 And if I have any chance at all to find tickets to a game,
31:08 it's probably going to be through game time.
31:10 An authorized ticket marketplace, the NBA,
31:12 which makes getting playoff tickets even faster and easier.
31:15 Prices on the game time app actually go down the closer it
31:18 gets to tip off and with killer last minute deals,
31:21 all in prices, views from your seat,
31:23 and their lowest price guarantee game time takes the
31:25 guesswork out of buying NBA tickets.
31:28 Getting through the game time app is super easy.
31:29 And I really liked their user interface.
31:31 All you have to do is go to the game or event that you want
31:34 to attend,
31:35 go through the venue to see where you want to sit relative
31:37 to the action.
31:38 Then you can actually get a panoramic view of your seat.
31:41 So you'll know exactly what to expect.
31:43 Once you get your ticket.
31:45 Game time's also great for those weekends where you're not
31:47 really sure what you want to do with your night because you
31:49 can just scroll through, look at flash deals, zone deals,
31:52 or last minute tickets and find a plan to spend the rest of
31:55 your day or evening.
31:56 You can save even more with exclusive in-app deals on select
32:00 seats ahead of the game or event.
32:02 And your purchase is covered with the most flexible customer
32:04 service policy in the ticket industry.
32:07 Take the guesswork out of buying NBA tickets with game time,

32:24 Last minute tickets, lowest price guaranteed.
32:27 - One of your,
32:28 one of your notes before we started,
32:31 this was the cornerback competition.
32:33 And we talked about that last week as well.
32:36 And I said before last week's practice session,
32:39 when we were doing our preview that I was going to try and
32:41 pay attention more to the defense,
32:43 but I can't keep my eyes off Drake May.
32:45 I can't keep my eyes off the wide receivers.
32:46 I'm sorry. It's just where it goes.
32:48 It's, it's hard to do the most,
32:50 on the most important side of the football, in my opinion,
32:56 especially with the number three,
32:57 wasn't paying too much attention to the defense,
33:00 but I think you have,
33:02 and I think you have sort of that sort of side of the ball
33:04 right now than I do.
33:05 So what are you looking for,
33:07 especially in terms of the cornerback position,
33:09 but in general improvements, things
33:11 (indistinct)
33:14 on that side of the ball when we head to practice tomorrow
33:16 down at Foxborough.
33:18 - I'd like to see Alex Soss and keep playing some good ball.
33:20 He flashed a couple of times.
33:22 He had a tip pass in the last practice we saw against
33:24 Javon Baker, the lead doing interception for Jalen Hawkins.
33:27 I think that cornerback group has really been competitive
33:29 all around.
33:30 I didn't get to see it,
33:31 but I know that Isaiah Bolden had a fast breakup.
33:33 Marco Wilson had some competitive reps as well.
33:36 And we've been saying that Christian Gonzalez
33:38 and Jonathan Jones are pretty much penned in to be
33:41 the starters wherever Jonathan Jones is applying it up.
33:44 And you'd like to see,
33:45 especially one of those outside guys emerge
33:47 because that star slot position for the Patriots secondary,
33:51 like Myles Bryant got a lot of crap,
33:52 but that was not an easy spot to play.
33:54 You have so many responsibilities,
33:56 a lot of adjustments that can happen on the fly where
33:59 literally it can just be a matter of Kyle Duggar
34:01 coming down to the box and saying,
34:02 "Hey, you take deep, I'm going to be in the slot."
34:04 Things like that, where you have to be really flexible.
34:07 And Jonathan Jones is the person you'd want to have
34:09 in that position where he's done all that.
34:11 He understands the secondary,
34:12 knows like the back of his hand.
34:13 That's a lot easier for him.
34:15 Whereas Marcus Jones, I think he can emerge in that spot.
34:18 And I'd like to see him have a strong camp,
34:19 especially after last year.
34:21 Wasn't really great.
34:22 You saw him get kind of picked on at times,
34:25 but even still, I think Jonathan Jones is the best fit
34:27 for that slot position.
34:29 And then someone like an Alex Austin or an Isaiah Bolden,
34:32 guys who really shown him pretty impressive flashes.
34:35 If they can show whether it's rotational
34:37 or one guy just stands out,
34:39 having that kind of youth and promise on the secondary,
34:41 but both of them do,
34:42 and then you kind of move guys around that flexibility,
34:45 I think that'd be pretty huge.
34:46 And that's before we talk about Marcellus Dial,
34:48 who I didn't see a ton of him, honestly.
34:50 Again, I was really paying attention to the offense,
34:52 but it seemed like he had a couple of good plays as well.
34:54 So I'll be looking to see which of the corners
34:56 can make plays because it's a really crowded position
35:00 outside of those top two spots.
35:01 So anybody who's kind of gaining ground,
35:04 that's going to be significant as we get deeper
35:06 into the off-season program
35:08 and you start seeing guys really start to work in
35:10 with the top units.
35:11 - Yeah.
35:12 I think too that, I guess my goal for tomorrow,
35:18 for the defense is frankly paying attention
35:22 more to that side of the ball,
35:23 but especially the young guys, you mentioned Dial,
35:25 but look, I know what I'm going to get
35:27 from a Matthew Judd on,
35:30 I know what I'm at least going to get from him,
35:32 same with Anfernee Jennings and sort of D.J. Twyce,
35:34 those older veterans, but I don't know about the young guys.
35:37 So I want to watch those guys in the secondary.
35:40 You mentioned Alex Austin,
35:41 wasn't too like all those young cornerbacks
35:45 who have a lot to prove.
35:47 And it's an interesting room in general,
35:49 because again, we all have these super high hopes
35:51 for Christian Gonzalez.
35:52 I mentioned it to a couple of times last week.
35:56 He's only played three, three and a half games in this league.
35:58 So I guess we shall see what happens there.
36:01 Anything, any other closing thoughts for tomorrow's OTA
36:04 before we get out of here
36:05 and sort of put a bow on this preview?
36:07 - Just want to see how smooth everything goes,
36:09 like make sure it's a well-oiled machine.
36:10 Things may not be perfect.
36:12 Again, this is a coaching staff
36:14 that's still working things out.
36:16 They're finding their chemistry and all of that,
36:18 but I'll probably just be looking out for that,
36:20 seeing if there's any snags.
36:21 And if there's anything that we've seen previously
36:24 that maybe they get a little better on,
36:25 like sometimes one side was moving through drills
36:28 a little bit faster than the other.
36:29 So you want to see them kind of be on the same page
36:31 a little bit.
36:32 Again, it's OTAs.
36:33 This is the time where you iron those things out
36:34 before training camp,
36:35 when truly every single rep matters
36:38 because the intensity is a little bit higher.
36:40 But that's about it for me.
36:41 Just want to see that everything is, you know,
36:43 operating relatively smoothly.
36:44 - Totally. I'm with you.
36:46 Keep stacking those days, keep progressing.
36:49 And again, it's super new.
36:50 This whole thing is insanely new.
36:52 There's a bunch of like, you know,
36:53 reporting that's continued to come out about the-
36:56 (audio cuts out)
36:59 How it talked about last week where like, you know,
37:01 and people made a big deal about like
37:02 Super Bowl banners coming down.
37:04 It's a brand new head coach.
37:05 Mayo's been doing this for, you know,
37:06 just under, call it three or-
37:08 (audio cuts out)
37:11 It's going to be a work in progress.
37:13 So I am interested to see too,
37:14 sort of just how those things work out
37:16 (audio cuts out)
37:18 as the off season goes on.
37:19 So thanks for tuning in to today's OTA preview.
