00:00They stand, they wave, and they salute a 21st century cycling marvel, a story that could
00:09be written by only one man here in Italy over the last three weeks.
00:14The incomparable Taddei Pagaccio completes the journey.
00:20Another showpiece ends to a fantastic Giro d'Italia.
00:29125km out to the coast and then back in to a landmark circuit in Rome.
00:36A last ever Giro d'Italia after 18 for Domenico Pozzovivo.
00:41And a moment for all the riders, including Geraint Thomas and Taddei Pagaccio and Dani Martinez,
00:46who have made this Giro d'Italia what it is.
00:49Jonathan Milan though, amongst the other sprinters, with a chance to secure another victory.
00:55Big pressure then on Jonathan Milan and a much more relaxed Taddei Pagaccio
01:00in bright sunshine in Rome and warm temperatures as the race got underway
01:06and the usual ceremony of teams and riders posing for photographs got underway.
01:13Fantastic moment for the crowd to catch a glimpse of this extraordinary Malle Rosa,
01:18the most dominant victory at the Giro d'Italia since 1965.
01:22Taddei Pagaccio on the front with his team on the front as the race got underway and the flag dropped.
01:28Then the four jersey wearers, Pellizzari joining Milan, Tiberi and Pagaccio.
01:35Hot winds as the race was blown on at a steady clip back into Rome and onto the circuit,
01:42a 9.5km circuit which the race would take on eight times.
01:47When they went over the finish line for the first time,
01:50Domenico Pozzovivo was handed the honour of crossing the line in first place
01:53and thereafter there was a breakaway of Ewan Costew, Michel Honoré, Baudin and Maciej Luci.
02:01They held on to a slender advantage through the first bonus sprint.
02:07It was Martin Maciej Luci who beat Michel Honoré to the cash prize.
02:13Their gap though was never more than around about 35 seconds at the absolute maximum.
02:19Alex Baudin then on the front, still holding on to this slight advantage through the inter-Giro
02:27and it was Ewan Costew who clipped off the front and got a little bit of a gap.
02:31The rider from Arkea B&B Hotels to take the inter-Giro on the day.
02:36The Vatican resplendent in the sun.
02:38One of so many landmark sites on this extraordinary Rome circuit
02:43that brought the race to its thunderous conclusion.
02:47All that remained then was the final bonus sprint
02:50and that was very close between Michel Honoré who just got there
02:54ahead of Alex Baudin of the Catalan AG2R.
02:57Then a crash at the back and Hugo Ofstede went down very hard amongst another group of riders
03:02at the back of the bunch as the race heated up.
03:06The breakaway were eventually caught and the GC teams hit the front.
03:11Then trouble for Jonathan Milan who snapped a chain with 8.4km to go.
03:16He got a spare bike and then started to work his way back through the convoy.
03:19It took him about 6km to get to the back of the peloton
03:23and then work his way up towards the front of the bunch
03:25as Tadej Pogacar started to lead out his sprinter Juan Sebastian Molano.
03:32Melilla then, Consani with Milan on his wheel.
03:35Tim van Dijk pushing for the line.
03:38Here comes Melilla with that raw, raw burst of power.
03:41Melilla has got this one. Can Milan come round him?
03:44Milan not giving up on this but Melilla holds them all off.
03:48Milan in second place.
03:50That was an astonishing final 10km and victory goes to the fastest man in the end, Tim Melilla.
03:58Just with that raw burst of pure speed gets the race won on stage 21.
04:03But as much as that's the headline, how about Jonathan Milan's second place?
04:09Melilla popping open the champagne.
04:29The winner of stage 21 and the winner of three stages at the Giro d'Italia
04:33ahead of Jonathan Milan in second place.
04:35The super team prize went to Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale,
04:39the most consistent team on GC.
04:42With Ben O'Connor in fourth place overall.
04:45Filippo Fiorelli won the InterGiro competition overall at the Giro.
04:51And the most combative rider of the Giro d'Italia in 2024 is Julian Alaphilippe.
04:58Antonio Tiberi held on to the white jersey
05:01with a healthy lead over Tiemann Arendsen in second place at 1.42 minutes.
05:06Tadej Pogacar won the King of the Mountains yesterday on Monte Grappa.
05:10Giulio Pellizzari finishing in a creditable second place.
05:14Jonathan Milan smiling despite his disappointment on the stage.
05:17The winner for the second year in a row of the Maglia Ciclamino
05:20by a big advantage over Caden Groves in second.
05:23Here's the podium, Geraint Thomas, Dani Martinez and Tadej Pogacar at the Giro.
