00:00Mathieu, a big congratulation. How do you feel looking at the images?
00:07It's hard to believe. I was really focused on trying to get the win, but we knew that
00:16there was going to be really strong. I felt really good actually at the end. The beginning
00:25was horrible with the rain and the cold, but when we came down to the coast I started to
00:30feel better and better. It's the third year in a row we win with the team, so it's unique.
00:38Tell us about your tactic on the podium, responding at every attack by Taddei and you also tried
00:43to go solo.
00:44Yes, I knew that Taddei was the strongest on the climbs. Already Cipresa was impressive.
00:53And then when we went with three, the cooperation was pretty good, because it's podium spots
01:00of course. My finish was on top of Poggio actually with Taddei. I knew he was going
01:08to try and drop me, but I felt pretty strong. I hoped I could counter, but he was strong
01:15enough to get me back.
01:17What made you launch your sprint from so far out?
01:21I knew the other two wanted to make it a long sprint, because they probably thought that
01:29I was going to make it as short as possible. I think I surprised them a bit when I saw
01:34the 300m sign. I launched my sprint. I felt strong enough to keep it until the finish
01:40line and I think it was the right tactic.
01:45Winning Milano-San Remo a second time is big, but winning Milano-San Remo, beating Pogacar
01:50and Ghana, how special is that?
01:53Just winning San Remo is special, but beating those two, I mean, they're both incredible
02:00riders, so it's an honor for me to be on a podium with them. I don't really know what
02:06to say. I'm super happy.
02:10Thank you very much.
02:11You have tried a lot, as much as you could. Are you satisfied that you have made the race
02:16going on Cipresa?
02:18Yes, we stick to the plan. We did a perfect job. The team was amazing. I did my best on
02:25attack on Cipresa. Of course, it would be really optimistic to go alone. I tried, but
02:31I was happy to go with Mathieu and Pippo. It was a really good group. I tried again
02:37on Poggio, but I knew that I needed to start early. Mathieu was just so strong today and
02:45also Pippo. I need to be satisfied with the third, but we come next year for more.
02:51Have you been surprised that Mathieu launched the sprint from so far out, from 300 meters?
02:56I think we all had the same idea to start at the same point sprinting, because I think
03:04we all started just at 300 meters, but I think maybe with the tailwind and maybe a bit going
03:12down the road via Roma, it's really fast. 300 meters doesn't seem too much, but he was
03:20the strongest and I support him.
03:23How much do you love Milano-San Remo? How much do you hate Milano-San Remo?
03:27I don't hate it, but for sure today, the first three hours and a half was not the best race,
03:34but it was again a nice addition and we give it all. In one year, it needs to go.
03:41Thank you very much.
03:42Pippo, second again. Again, there is Mathieu van der Poel.
03:48Yes, I hope it can be again another year, so I know I can do second maybe. I'm really happy for today.
03:57I think as a team, we are doing an amazing job, so we have nothing to say. I try to follow
04:05two big codes of cycling. One is world champion, the other one is to be world champion.
04:13I think today, more than this, I can do nothing, so I'm really happy and thank you.
04:18Tell us, how did you keep faith on the podium and how did you keep the distance?
04:24Immediately, I started to ride with my pace. I know I can have my numbers until the top,
04:32then in the downhill, I close the pace and I try to come back inside the two riders.
04:38I think I did an amazing performance, so more than this, I can do nothing.
04:43I want to say again, thank you to the team, thank you to the staff of INEOS for the job they did
04:50until today. We can see next year.
04:55So you'll come back?
04:56I hope.
