00:34 Hello, welcome to From the South.
00:40 I'm Luis Alberto Matos from the Lesoth Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:44 We begin with the news.
00:45 More delegations continue to arrive
00:47 in Tehran for the funerals of President Erbani Raisi
00:50 and his eight comrades who died Sunday in a helicopter crash.
00:53 Qatar's Amir Sheikh Tamim and the foreign ministers

01:26 of the bodies of President Erbani Raisi and his comrades
01:28 in the presence of millions of people
01:30 accompanying the funeral procession.
01:32 The eight coffins of the victims of the helicopter crash
01:35 were received by local people and representatives
01:38 of international religious delegations
01:40 at the University of Tehran.
01:41 The martyrs were worn by attendance
01:44 with flowers, pictures, and pledges of eternal loyalty,
01:47 with the crowd also expressing messages of solidarity
01:50 with the Palestinian cause.
01:56 Venezuelan Foreign Minister Ivan Gil
01:58 attended the funeral of President Ebrahim Raisi,
02:01 Foreign Minister Hossein Amirutollahian,
02:03 and members of the entourage who died on Sunday, May 19,
02:06 in the helicopter accident.
02:08 The social media ex the head of the Venezuelan diplomats
02:10 said he was attending the state funeral
02:12 on behalf of President Nicolás Maduro and the Venezuelan
02:16 people.
02:17 He pointed out that both are honoring
02:19 the life and legacy of an outstanding global leader
02:21 and defender of the anti-imperialist peoples.
02:24 He added that Venezuela reiterates its commitment
02:26 to the friendship and solidarity with Iran,
02:28 remaining a faithful and constant ally.
02:31 The state funeral, attended by heads of state,
02:33 foreign ministers, and political representatives
02:35 from different parts of the world,
02:36 is headed by Mohamed Bofber, who was first
02:39 vice president of the Raisi cabinet
02:40 and now is the acting president.
02:42 In this context also, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Ivan Gil
02:49 gave an exclusive interview to Iranian Span TV media.
02:53 He highlighted the country's ties with Iran
02:55 and described their mutual cooperation of the last decades
02:58 as historic, while reiterating its long-term vision
03:01 for relations with the Islamic nation.
03:03 During the interview, the Foreign Affairs Minister
03:05 photo-lamented the death of President Ebrahim Raisi,
03:08 the Iranian Foreign Minister, and their comrades.
03:10 Iran and Venezuela have had an extraordinary history
03:19 of mutual collaboration in the last 25 years.
03:23 And in recent times, when Venezuela
03:25 has been target of criminal sanctions,
03:28 of unilateral coercive measures applied
03:29 by the same imperialism that has applied them to Iran,
03:34 and that has wanted to do so much damage to our people,
03:36 one of the first countries that came forward,
03:39 one of the first governments that stepped forward
03:41 to offer its support and corroboration,
03:43 was precisely the government of President Raisi.
03:47 We have a unity really built on a very solid base
03:50 that allows us to go beyond speeches,
03:52 beyond common positions, to international scenarios
03:56 in multilateral forums.
03:58 It also allows us to give security to our people.
04:02 Imam Hill also pointed out the importance
04:04 of solidarity between nations, which
04:05 covers key issues such as food and energy supply.
04:08 Venezuela counts on Iran.
04:14 Iran counts on Venezuela in all these matters--
04:16 food supply, energy supply, science, and technology.
04:21 That is to say, we have the need to create
04:23 this new collaboration.
04:25 We have proven it.
04:27 We have a model relationship, a relationship
04:29 that goes beyond the traditional conventional diplomatic
04:31 relations.
04:33 We are able precisely to overcome
04:35 hard times in some of the countries
04:37 to stand up for each other.
04:39 In India, Mumbai mourns the martyrdom of Ayatollah Raisi
04:43 and his entourage organized by Isna Hashari Youth Foundation
04:46 at the Masjid-e-Haramian Mosque on May 21, 2024.

05:47 were present also two authoritative interpreters
05:50 of the religious law of Islam, called mujadid.
05:53 Maulana Kumail Nazgar from the Indian city of Pune
06:01 started his speech with a poem attributing Raisi.
06:04 The poem included verses of the Quran
06:06 and the verses of the Ayatollah Raisi.
06:09 The poem included verses such as,
06:11 and quote, "He was a start that rose from east
06:15 "and then got his winning center
06:18 "and attained the call of his Lord in West."
06:21 The Indian religious authority also announced
06:25 that his country declared one day of state mourning.
06:28 The program concluded with the speech
06:33 of Maulana's yet Hussein Mekhti Husseini,
06:36 who highlighted the importance of martyrdom

06:43 when Iman Khaimaini departed, all the enemies were happy,
06:48 but Iman Khaimaini proved that his death

07:30 - Welcome back.

07:48 The health entity indicated that they still do not have

07:53 since they are still victim under the rubble
07:56 in places of difficult access.
07:58 The authorities also informed
08:00 that the death toll from the Israeli genocide
08:02 is now more than 35,709,

08:08 In the Yemeni refugee camp in the northern West Bank,
08:16 the Israeli army has again launched a lethal raid.
08:19 The journalist Omar Menasera shares his own experience
08:22 and denounces being targeted by Israeli army shots
08:24 despite his press identification.
08:28 - I'm the journalist Omar Menasera.
08:30 We were covering the news inside the Yemeni camp.
08:33 We were at short distance from the entrance of the camp.
08:36 We could see military equipment and bulldozers.
08:39 After covering the news,
08:41 we proceeded to move to an early place.
08:43 It was near the Yemeni public hospital.
08:45 The army was about 100 or 150 meters away from us.
08:50 Of course, we could see it
08:51 and we tried to be visible to the military teams
08:54 and let them know that we were journalists.
08:57 We were the only ones in that street.
08:59 Just as we arrived at the entrance to the public hospital,
09:02 they began to shoot at us directly.
09:04 I tried to enter the hospital as my fellow journalists.
09:08 We were able to enter and I was hit by a bullet fragment.
09:12 Later, they continued shooting extensively,
09:15 which means that it was intentional
09:17 to attack the journalists.
09:19 I'm the journalist Omar Menasera.
09:24 We were covering the news inside the Yemeni camp.
09:27 We were at short distance from the entrance of the camp.
09:30 We could see military equipment and bulldozers.
09:33 After covering the news,
09:35 we proceeded to move to an early place.
09:37 It was near the Yemeni public hospital.

09:43 Of course, we could see it

09:51 We were the only ones in that street.
09:53 Just as we arrived at the entrance to the public hospital,
09:56 they began to shoot at us directly.
09:58 I tried to enter the hospital as my fellow journalists.
10:02 We were able to enter and I was hit by a bullet fragment.
10:05 Later, they continued shooting extensively,

10:13 Colombia's President Gustavo Petro
10:16 ordered the opening of a Colombian embassy in Ramalla,
10:19 the administrative capital of the state of Palestine.
10:22 It was announced last Tuesday
10:23 by the foreign minister of Colombia,
10:25 Luis Gilberto Murillo,
10:26 besides highlighting the diplomatic work of Colombia

10:31 This decision marks a significant step
10:32 in diplomatic relations between Colombia and Palestine,
10:35 strengthening the ties between both nations.
10:37 Murillo also denounced the genocidal actions
10:39 of the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu,
10:41 against the people of Palestine.
10:43 The announcement of the opening
10:44 of a Colombian diplomatic office in Ramalla
10:46 came after the breaking of diplomatic relations
10:48 with Israel on May 2nd.

10:53 British Prime Minister Richard Sunak
11:07 called a snap national election for July 4th,
11:10 assuring that the British could choose their future
11:13 with this vote.
11:14 The statement was made outside, down in street gates
11:16 on Wednesday as his conservative party
11:18 faces an uphill struggle to extend its 14 years in power.
11:22 Sunak also stressed that he will fight for every vote
11:24 and will demonstrate that only a libertarian government
11:27 under his leadership will maintain
11:29 the country's economic stability.
11:31 Prime Minister had been required to hold an election
11:33 by January 2025 and had long resisted calls
11:36 to be specific about his plans.
11:38 However, a falling inflation rate
11:40 seems to have provided backdrop for his announcement.
11:47 And South Africans go to the polls on May 29th
11:49 to vote in national and provincial elections.
11:52 According to the electoral commission,
11:54 a total of 27.9 million people are registered to vote.

12:02 among the 14,903 candidates of 70 political parties
12:06 and 11 independents who are running for seats
12:09 in the legislative assemblies.
12:11 In this context and according to opinion polls,
12:13 the African National Congress, the party in power
12:15 since the first democratic elections in 1994,
12:18 could for the first time lose its absolute majority
12:21 in parliament and be forced to form a coalition government.
12:24 China imposed sanctions on 12 US military companies
12:33 for selling arms to Taiwan.
12:35 The Chinese foreign ministry said that the decision
12:37 came after the unilateral and illegal sanctions
12:39 imposed by the United States on several Chinese entities
12:42 citing alleged Russian-related factors.
12:45 Among the 12 US entities sanctioned by Beijing
12:47 are an aerospace and military company
12:49 with large resources in advanced technology
12:51 and global warfare, as well as a missile manufacturing company
12:55 and a firm that provides weapon systems
12:57 for strategic and tactical operations.
12:59 In addition, China's foreign ministry
13:01 informed that as of Wednesday it would not issue visas
13:03 and would prohibit the entry into Chinese territory

13:36 Welcome back.
13:41 The governments of Venezuela and China
13:43 signed new cooperation agreements
13:45 to strengthen trade, investment and strategic development.
13:48 The executive vice president of Venezuela,
13:50 Del Sol Rodriguez, and the representative
13:51 for international trade of the People's Republic of China,
13:54 Wang Shouwen, signed in Caracas the agreements
13:57 to strengthen bilateral relations
13:58 and consolidate mutual benefits.
14:00 The representatives emphasized that commercial exchanges
14:03 will be consolidated through the exchange of Chinese goods
14:05 for Venezuelan coffee.
14:07 After the meeting, Rodriguez stressed that Venezuela
14:09 will always be an ally of China
14:11 because it respects international law
14:13 and the growth of peoples.
14:15 She also emphasized her country's intention
14:17 to join the BRICS group within this year.
14:19 (speaking in foreign language)
14:24 So this is the future of relations,
14:26 a giant that is all support of the BRICS.
14:29 Venezuela is expecting to formally join
14:31 the BRICS group this year
14:33 because it is a route to the new world,
14:37 to a world without hegemony,
14:39 to a world that respects international law.
14:41 Where international trade and economic cooperation
14:47 has new visions, new trade channels,
14:49 new financial channels,
14:50 which is very important.
14:54 Why?
14:55 Well, our economies are either blocked
14:57 or threatened by hegemonic positions
14:59 and the construction of this new world,
15:01 of these new international financial and trade networks,
15:04 like the Silk Road,
15:08 will allow us to strengthen all the common paths
15:10 of our peoples based on sovereign respect between states.
15:14 China's international trade representative,
15:18 Wang Shouwen, said the treaties with Venezuela
15:20 further strengthen bilateral trade and investment relations.
15:23 Today we signed a bilateral investment treaty
15:27 on the basis of mutual benefit,
15:29 and it is also a treaty to further encouragement
15:32 development for two-way investments
15:34 between the two countries.
15:35 In this context, the president of Venezuela,
15:39 Nicolas Maduro, received in Caracas
15:41 the representative for international trade
15:43 of the People's Republic of China, Wang Shouwen,
15:46 to work with his delegation.
15:48 President Maduro was accompanied among other authorities
15:50 by the ex-Vice President, Delso Rodriguez,
15:53 and Pedro Teixeira, oil minister.
15:55 The main purpose of the visit
15:57 is to strengthen strategic cooperation
15:59 and the ties of brotherhood between the two countries.
16:01 Nowadays, economic and trade cooperation
16:04 between Venezuela and China
16:06 exceeds 600 strategic agreements
16:08 in several fundamental areas
16:09 for the development of the two nations.
16:11 In Peru, President Dina Buluarte
16:18 filed a lawsuit before the Constitutional Court
16:20 against the Judiciary and the Public Prosecutor's Office,
16:23 accusing them of allegedly undermining
16:25 the exercise of their functions and competencies.
16:28 According to local media, the president argued
16:30 that there was an alleged interference
16:32 by both institutions of justice in her functions
16:35 as President of the Republic of Peru.
16:37 Likewise, the head of state appointed
16:39 the Prime Minister, Gustavo Adrian Zen,
16:42 to present the lawsuit
16:43 and represent her during the process.
16:45 Buluarte's decision comes in response
16:47 to a new investigation announced
16:48 by the Public Prosecutor's Office
16:49 regarding the Rolexgate case,
16:52 which investigates Buluarte for the alleged crime
16:55 of illicit enrichment
16:56 after the purchase of luxury watches.
16:59 Nearly three weeks after the city of Puerto Alegre
17:19 suffered from its worst floods in history,
17:21 over 280,000 people are still living in shelters
17:24 or in homes of friends and relatives.
17:27 Our correspondent, Brian Meir, has more details.
17:30 In greater Puerto Alegre, home to 3.5 million residents,
17:36 the floodwaters have been going down,
17:38 reaching 3.9 meters above normal today.
17:41 But huge swaths of the city are still underwater
17:45 and other neighborhoods like Santa Teresinha,
17:47 where I am right now, are surrounded by water on all sides
17:50 and can only be reached by walking through knee-deep water,
17:54 as I saw dozens of people do on my way here today,
17:57 some of them barefoot or in flip-flops,
18:00 despite the risk of leptospirosis.
18:02 As the cleanup begins,
18:04 residents are getting more and more angry.
18:06 I've talked to several people
18:07 who've lost everything they've had.
18:09 The residents in this neighborhood say
18:10 nobody has arrived yet to offer them any kind of help.
18:14 They want to know when the money that's been pledged
18:16 by the federal government is going to arrive here,
18:19 and they need to make decisions
18:20 about whether they want to stay here.
18:22 This is the second time the neighborhood's flooded
18:24 in the last six months.
18:25 It's very close to the Guaibar River.
18:27 And if the flood contention system
18:29 continues in the precarious situation that was left in
18:32 through 20 years of right-wing local governments,
18:35 they want to know if it's really going to be safe
18:37 for them to stay here,
18:38 and if not, where they're going to have to move.
18:42 Currently, there's 280,000 people
18:45 who are living in shelters in Porto Alegre
18:47 or in houses of friends and relatives.
18:50 And as they return to their homes
18:52 and start doing the cleanup, assessing the damage,
18:55 they want to know if they're ever going to receive damages
18:58 from the criminal behavior of a local government
19:01 that allowed a preventable disaster like this to happen.
19:04 On Wednesday, the AECL Summit,
19:08 co-hosted with the United Kingdom,
19:09 will come to an end after debating concerning issues
19:12 regarding artificial intelligence
19:14 and signing an agreement among participants.
19:16 Let's see for details.
19:18 The meeting is a follow-up to November's
19:23 AI Safety Summit at Bletchley Park in the UK,
19:26 aimed at discussing issues such as job security,
19:28 copyright and inequality.
19:30 In that regard, ministers expressed their views
19:33 and shared their proposals.
19:35 The ministerial session held today
19:38 will seek more specific and practical measures
19:41 based on the vision presented in the Seoul Declaration,
19:44 and will especially focus on ensuring
19:46 artificial intelligence safety
19:48 and sustainable AI development.
19:50 - We have a joint mission to grip the wrist
19:56 so that we can together seize the incredible opportunities
20:00 across our public services, our businesses
20:03 and our societies at large.
20:05 However, my message today is that
20:08 we should not rest on our laurels.
20:10 As the pace of AI development accelerates,
20:13 we must match that speed with our own efforts and action,
20:16 if we are to grip the wrist and seize the opportunities.
20:21 It is our responsibility to ensure that human wisdom
20:24 keeps pace with human knowledge,
20:26 as we navigate the most complex technology
20:29 humanity has ever produced.
20:31 - On Tuesday, over 12 tech companies
20:34 signed a voluntary agreement
20:35 to enhance artificial intelligence safety,
20:37 including Alphabet's Google, Microsoft,
20:39 Xiaomi, Amazon, Samsung Electronics, among others.
20:43 They agreed on using methods as watermarking
20:48 to identify AI-generated content,
20:50 as well as grant job creation
20:52 and support socially vulnerable groups.
20:55 The PM of South Korea gave the opening remarks
20:57 on the subject.
20:58 - The Republic of Korea is fully committed
21:03 to contributing to the development of safe, innovative
21:08 and inclusive AI technologies
21:11 for the benefit of its citizens and the global community.
21:15 AI safety cannot be truly achieved
21:18 until those who are the most vulnerable
21:21 have access to necessary means
21:24 to respond to threats and challenges
21:27 posed by this new technology.
21:30 - The Artificial Intelligence Seoul Summit
21:32 will come to an end on Wednesday,
21:34 after engaging leaders and chief executive officers
21:36 of companies in talks on eye safety
21:38 and inclusive eye policies, among other pivotal issues.
21:41 The next encounter will be held in France in 2025.
21:45 - And this is where I've come to the end of this news brief.
