00:21 In Venezuela, the president of the National Electoral Council, Elvis Amoroso, expressed
00:26 his rejection of the European Union's decision to lift the sanctions imposed by the United
00:30 States on the electoral power.
00:36 And in Brazil, President Ricinácio Lula da Silva called a meeting of ministers to discuss
00:40 actions taken in the state of Rio Grande do Sul affected by floods.
00:51 Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra García from Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:56 We begin with the news.
01:13 In Palestine, the Israeli occupation army released at least 77 detainees in the Gaza
01:18 Strip who were transferred to the east of Ir Al-Balah.
01:21 The civil defense in Gaza confirmed that the sanitary and humanitarian conditions of the
01:26 prisoners released by Israel are critical after being subjected to various types of
01:31 torture and psychological abuse.
01:33 The Gaza border and crossing authority denounced that the Palestinians kidnapped by Israel
01:38 did not receive any food, medical or hygiene supplies and were also prevented from sleeping
01:44 during their detention.
01:45 The victims of the Israeli siege reported that before being prisoners of the Israeli
01:49 regime, they were refugees in the Al-Aqsa Hospital in the center of the Gaza Strip.
02:04 This food ration was not possible to get, not even for the whole day.
02:08 They gave us one egg to share with three people, only one egg for three people to eat.
02:13 We were having a very bad time, we were dying and we stay awake 24 hours a day.
02:18 There were murderers, beatings and attacks by dogs that they let loose to attack us.
02:23 We stayed 70 days like this.
02:25 We saw death, the young people who were still inside had nails this long and their hair
02:29 reached their waists.
02:39 Since the beginning of the war, my health has been deteriorating, I have a large family,
02:44 we are 14 people, and we have been stumbling from one place to another looking for a safe
02:48 place to take refuge.
02:50 We went to the hospital Al-Shifa, my wife and I, and our children, we sought refuge,
02:56 and we stayed there for about two months, and suddenly at two o'clock in the morning
03:00 the Jews arrived and took us out by force.
03:03 And they violently evicted the people in groups of 50, and from each group they took people
03:08 out and took them prisoners.
03:10 Thank God they let me go.
03:11 I only live to serve and support my family.
03:14 I don't belong to any group, I only dedicate myself to my family.
03:22 Israeli occupation forces attacked the northern part of the Gaza Strip on Monday in a military
03:27 operation against a refugee camp in the city of Havalia.
03:30 The Tel Aviv regime resumed the heavy bombardments of the town, destroying the existing houses
03:36 in the area seven months after the beginning of the Israeli war against Palestine.
03:41 The war has left so far more than 35 million Palestinians dead, while the occupation forces
03:46 continue to besiege the city of Rafah, which is sheltering around 1.5 million displaced
03:52 Palestinians.
03:58 Now let's go to Palestine with our correspondent Huda Hegazi, who is at the Al-Aqsa Matiz Hospital
04:04 in Deir al-Bala, governorate, one of the few health centers available in Gaza.
04:09 I'm at the Al-Aqsa Matiz Hospital in Deir al-Bala, governorate, in the center of the
04:17 Gaza Strip, one of the few hospitals that are still operating in the entire Gaza Strip.
04:21 We could say that it is the only hospital that is still operating in the center and
04:27 in the entire southern zone in general, because according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health,
04:32 the health system in the Gaza Strip is on the verge of collapse due to the closure of
04:37 the crossings that has been in effect for more than seven consecutive days.
04:50 Since the beginning of the Israeli military operation in Rafah, the Kerem Shalom and Rafah
04:54 crossings have been completely closed, and there is no entry of fuel, medical supplies
04:59 or humanitarian aid. Therefore, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, the
05:03 hospitals in the Gaza Strip are in danger of ceasing to function. Even today, the European
05:08 hospital, which was the central hospital in the south, located between Rafah and Qantounis,
05:14 was closed because it ran out of fuel.
05:25 And this hospital, the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, is in danger because if they don't get fuel
05:30 in 48 hours, this hospital could shut down. And therefore, all the patients, all the wounded,
05:37 will be in a high-risk situation. Not only patients wounded by Israeli shelling, but
05:41 also patients with chronic diseases such as those with kidney failure, with cardiovascular
05:46 diseases, as well as babies in incubators. Hence, all these people, all these patients,
05:53 with this electric power, they need this fuel for these devices to which they are connected
05:57 to work, and therefore, they are all threatened with death.
06:03 We will now speak with the spokesman for the security at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, Dr.
06:11 Khaled Dikram. Tell us a little bit more about the situation of Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital
06:16 in light of this fuel crisis that the health sector is facing in Gaza.
06:23 Hello doctor, please comment on the situation of the hospital in this crisis caused by the
06:27 closure of the crossings.
06:34 About a week ago, the occupation army closed the Rafah crossing and prevented the entry
06:38 of aid, including fuel. The absence of this fuel in the hospital can threaten the lives
06:43 of many sick and injured.
06:55 In the past, we called on this fuel in the hospital, and we were using the reserve. We
07:00 already consumed the last part that we have left, which does not last more than 48 hours.
07:16 When it's run out, many patients will be in danger of death, and especially those in intensive
07:21 care, newborns in the incubators, those in surgery and the renal patients.
07:37 As we can see, the fuel that this hospital has right now is only enough for about 48
07:42 hours, and in case the borders remain closed. If there is no entry of fuel and medical supplies,
07:48 this hospital will be in danger of collapsing. It will be in danger of closing, thus harming
07:54 the wounded who come to this hospital because of the Israeli bombings, and all the patients
07:59 who need treatment and cannot find it. Therefore, the message is that the international community
08:05 must put pressure on Israel to open the borders and allow the entry of medical supplies.
08:15 On Monday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated during a meeting with Greek
08:20 head of government Kriakos Mitsotakis that he does not consider the Hamas movement as
08:25 a terrorist organization, but has acted as a resistance group, safeguarding its territories
08:30 since 1947.
08:32 I have a significant disagreement with you. I do not consider Hamas a terrorist organization.
08:40 On the contrary, Hamas has acted as a resistance organization, safeguarding its territory since
08:46 1947, when their lands were occupied.
08:54 So many Hamas members are being killed. The entire West is attacking them with all kinds
08:59 of weapons and ammunition. And in the face of all this, if you call Hamas a terrorist
09:04 organization, I will be saddened. Hamas has been continuously isolated from their lands,
09:10 and their lands have been occupied by Israel since 1947.

09:26 Welcome back. In Venezuela, the President of the National Electoral Council, Elvis Amoroso,
09:42 expressed his rejection of the European Union's decision to lift the sanctions imposed by
09:46 the United States on the electoral power. During a speech this Monday, Amoroso categorically
09:51 rejected the intentions of the European Union to coerce his functions as President of the
09:56 CNE, as well as the Venezuelan electoral power, pretending before the international public
10:01 opinion that they are proceeding to the lifting of the sanctions in the country. In turn,
10:06 Amoroso exhorted the European Union and other countries, such as the United States and the
10:10 United Kingdom, to proceed to the total lifting of the unilateral force and genocidal measures
10:16 against Venezuela. Amoroso also expressed that the decision of the European Union to
10:20 lift the sanctions only against him is contrary to his duties as a Venezuelan.
10:31 US Southern Command renews its crusade against China and questions the Asian countries'
10:36 intentions in Latin America. US Southern Command Chief Laura Richardson discussed China's
10:41 new interest in Latin America and insinuated that Beijing is pursuing military objectives
10:46 by expanding its presence in the region. She highlighted that China's influence in Latin
10:51 America is growing through critical projects such as the construction of large ports that
10:56 give it access to valuable resources. In this way, the head of the US Southern Command spoke
11:02 of the importance of cybersecurity and warned on the need to inform about the associated
11:07 risks if critical infrastructure falls under the control of companies linked to Beijing.
11:12 Beijing, for its part, accused Washington of double standards and reminded it that it
11:21 has about 800 military bases abroad, with 173,000 military personnel stationed in 159
11:29 countries. The international community is deeply concerned about the activities carried
11:34 out by the US in those military bases, where the citizens of those countries have the right
11:39 to know what military activities the US actually practices in those territories. Beijing stressed
11:45 that the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean are sovereign and not the backyard
11:50 of the US. In the United States, Trump leads in six of
11:58 five key states ahead of the November election. Former US President Donald Trump has a significant
12:04 lead over President Joe Biden in five states where there is no clear pattern. Likewise,
12:10 Biden's reputation continues to suffer in the face of a longing for change, discontent
12:15 over the economy and the war in Gaza. Over 4,000 people are reporting that the Democratic
12:21 president is losing support among young voters, blacks and Hispanics, the largest part of
12:26 his electorate. Meanwhile, Trump is ahead in five of six key states - Michigan, Arizona,
12:32 Nevada, Georgia and Pennsylvania - where Biden would only win in one - Wisconsin.
12:43 According to recent polls, Donald Trump is ahead of President Biden in five crucial battleground
12:48 states. In Pennsylvania, Trump leads Biden 47% to 45%. In Arizona, the former president
12:56 is leading 49% over 42%. Whereas in the state of Michigan, Donald Trump has 49% approval
13:03 over Biden's 42%. The surveys also reveal that in Georgia, Trump is also ahead of Biden
13:09 49% to 39%. And in the state of Nevada, Trump leads 50% over 38%. In Wisconsin, however,
13:18 Republican incumbent Joe Biden might beat Trump 47% over 45%.
13:35 In Togo, the Constitutional Court confirmed temporary results from last month's legislative
13:40 election process, which gave the victory to President Faude Nasim Bez's ruling party.
13:46 Nasim Bez's union for the Republican Party won 108 of the 113 parliamentary seats. Opposition
13:53 parties won the over five seats in the April 29 vote. The provisional results had been
13:59 published earlier this month amid mounting political tension after a doubt a contest
14:05 to constitutional reform. Opposition parties have condemned the reform, which they say
14:09 will allow Nasim Bez to extend his already nearly two-decade rule. Meanwhile, the court
14:16 has rejected all appeals lodged by the opposition.

15:04 Welcome back to From the South. In Brazil, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva called
15:08 a meeting of ministers to discuss actions taken in the state of Rio Grande do Sul affected
15:13 by floods. The Brazilian president called the meeting to evaluate the measures adopted
15:18 in Rio Grande do Sul, a state that has been affected by the heavy rains. Moreover, the
15:23 national government allocated more than $10 billion for the reconstruction of the affected
15:28 cities. The executive also announced on Monday the suspension for three years of the payment
15:33 of Rio Grande do Sul's debt with the state.
15:39 Meanwhile, Brazilian authorities warned that the situation in the state of Rio Grande do
15:44 Sul will worsen due to the new floods. According to the most recent bulletin of the state civil
15:49 defense, more floods and landslides are expected to occur between Monday, May 13 and Tuesday,
15:55 May 14, due to the intensity of the rains registered during the weekend. Moreover, the
16:01 agency warned about the possibility that the level of the Uaiba river could rise again
16:05 and reach 5.50 meters, which would be a new record. The authorities indicated that the
16:11 rains affecting the state of Rio Grande do Sul have left at least 147 dead and more than
16:17 1.4 million people affected.
16:22 Meanwhile, meteorologists issued warnings due to forecasts of intense cold weather.
16:29 According to them, the lowest temperatures are expected to be felt mainly from the night
16:34 of this Monday, May 13, in several areas of the state, especially in the south, in the
16:39 Guaixou countryside and in the mountainous regions. According to the data, the intense
16:44 cold will extend until the morning of Thursday 16, and heat drops in temperature are expected
16:50 from May 17. In view of this situation, the authorities transferred to the region a ship
16:57 with food and clothing supplies to help the affected citizens and also called to be alert
17:02 for the infectious respiratory diseases.
17:08 In Mexico, the meteorological service warned of temperatures above 40 degrees in 14 states
17:14 of the country. According to the agency, this is the second heat wave that will be affecting
17:19 the southeast of Mexico and the Yucatan Peninsula. Maximum temperatures of above 45 degrees Celsius
17:25 are expected in Campeche, Chiapas, Tabasco, Veracruz and Yucatan. This comes after a heat
17:30 wave that hit Mexico 10 days ago decreased over the weekend after rains were recorded
17:36 in the south, center and north of the country. The National Water Commission warned that
17:42 temperatures will reach 40 to 45 degrees in at least nine states of the country, including
17:47 Guerrero, Hidalgo, Michoacán and Oaxaca. Meanwhile, 35 to 40 degrees are expected in
17:53 Baja California, Coahuila, Colima and nine other states.
18:03 Indonesia's Ibu volcano erupted Monday, sweeping a dense 5,000-mile gray ash plume into the
18:09 sky for five minutes. Due to the toxic smoke generated by the eruption, the Indonesian
18:14 authorities raised an alert, warning and prohibiting all outdoor activities. Authorities have reportedly
18:20 prepared evacuation tents, but no evacuation order has been issued yet. However, authorities
18:26 have called the population to be cautious and take all necessary measures before the
18:30 high probability of new and stronger volcanic activity. The Ibu is one of the most active
18:36 volcanoes on the planet and has presented an increased activity during the last month.
