00:00 What's going on everyone? Taylor Cowles here from CLNS Media alongside Brian Hines from Pat's Pulpit here from the first day of Patriots
00:07 Voluntary OTAs. Now we're talking about quarterbacks on a day where it was clearly very veteran heavy
00:13 You saw the guys with more experience tend to be at the top of these early depth charts
00:17 Although the rotation did take an interesting turn later in practice and with all the notes today
00:22 I want to make sure we underline that this is a day that should be taken with a grain of salt still very early in
00:27 The offseason program. It's really more about learning and building consistent days rather than necessarily producing at a high level at this point
00:35 But Brian, what did you think from both the rotation that we saw and from some of the results throughout the day?
00:40 Yeah, it's the first day you're out here as you said, so especially for guys like Drake May and Joe Milton rookies
00:46 It's a walk before you type a walk before you run type of thing
00:49 And that's what you saw you saw Jacoby Brissett lead off all the individual
00:53 Reps at quarterback the team drills at quarterback followed by Bailey Zappi and then you got into Drake May then you got into Joe Milton
01:00 So just for those guys, you know getting your feet wet literally lots of footwork drills lots of bag drills
01:05 That's big with Alex Van Pelt that we knew and how much do we have to hear about Drake May in the pre-draft cycle?
01:11 He needs to clean up that footwork. So that was a big emphasis today footwork and just get these guys kind of acclimated
01:17 Get them out here on the field with the veterans with all these new coaches and just mix it in
01:21 But Gerard Mayo said the reps help the reps help look one day. They might look different the other day
01:26 So this was just a one as you said take it with a grain of salt
01:29 Yeah
01:29 And you did see Jacoby Brissett tend to lead a lot of these drills like you said which makes a lot of sense
01:33 He has experience in Alex Van Pelt system
01:35 Also an accomplished quarterback in the NFL then Bailey's happy was typically the next man up again
01:40 These are guys who have more experience
01:42 So you'd expect them this early in the process to be the guys leading off then Drake May in terms of the rookies
01:47 Was typically the next man up with Joe Milton behind him now in terms of the results Jacoby Brissett
01:53 I think it's fair to say was the most consistent wasn't perfect by any means
01:55 But he was the guy where what you saw from him was pretty much what you expected with Bailey's happy
02:00 He was on fire early on in individual drills
02:03 Although he did kind of taper off as the session continued and they were working with more receivers
02:07 I'd say Drake may pretty much what you expected really good throwing downfield
02:12 I'd say the same with Joe Milton
02:13 But then the underneath stuff as we kind of knew heading into this process or areas
02:17 They need to be more consistent now with Drake May a lot of that
02:20 I felt like was ball placement
02:21 There were a lot of passes that seemed like they were either too far in front of or behind receivers
02:25 Not a ton of uncatchable passes just you'd like to see the accuracy be better
02:29 And I think it was a similar story with Joe Milton just a little less consistent
02:32 Although they both had really impressive bombs on the throws where they were allowed to go deep
02:36 But what else did you see in terms of you know again the rotation as it kind of went on if anything stood out and
02:41 Then what you saw from these guys on the thing you hit most of it there
02:43 The only thing I'd add was the arm strength
02:46 It's still we saw a glimpse of it at rookie mini camp last weekend with with Drake May and Joe Milton
02:51 But these guys get out here and the ball just flies off their arm
02:55 And now you can access parts of the field that they couldn't in years past you saw a few plays where they're driving it outside
03:00 The numbers a couple big deep bombs today, especially Joe Mellon
03:04 Just a flick of the wrist and it's going 60 yards downfield
03:06 So the the arm strength jumps off the page and it's gonna open up parts of the offense and the last thing I'll say which
03:12 Maybe my favorite takeaway of the day was about 20 minutes after practice way back there by the far field goalposts
03:20 It's Drake May it's Javon Baker and it's Jalen Polk your three rookies
03:25 That's your core. That's your future. They're 20 minutes working after practice just by themselves
03:30 That's excited because those are the three guys you want to build this thing around
03:33 Hopefully for the next five five ten years to see them getting that getting that work in establishing that relationship early
03:39 That was one of my favorite takeaways from the day
03:41 100% another Drake May nugget for anybody who's hoping to see him start creeping into that top part of the rotation
03:47 We did see later on in practice once the team kind of split into halves
03:51 You did see Jacoby Bursette in Drake May with the group that looked like it was primarily made of
03:55 Offensive and some defensive starters then on the other side and this side is one with more Ben McAdoo the more secondary type of coaches
04:02 You saw Bailey Zappi backed up by Joe Milton
04:06 So I do think there's no an understanding obviously in the coaching staff of how they like these depth charts to line up
04:11 But again a day where the veterans took the majority of reps with rookies really mixing in from time to time
04:17 But again, you did see a glimpse of Drake May and you love to see that he was putting in work with his young receivers
